Volume 34, Issue 3
by Gabby Kiser
Have you ever walked down the hall ways and thought you
saw double? Chances are it was one of the twelve sets of twins
at Colonial Heights High School.
There are a few tricks students use to help tell the difference
between the twins at CHHS such as facial structure, birth
marks or simply difference in genders.
Seniors Haley and
Kellie Slaybaugh are
two identical twins
many students get
mixed up; though there
are small traits that help
distinguish the two.
“I have a round face
and Kellie has an oval
face” said Haley. Most
students say they can
tell the difference
between Haley and
Kellie, but it’s not that
easy for their dad.
According to the twins,
sometimes even dad
can not tell the two
apart. Both girls enjoy
cheering and both work
at Swaders. In addition,
they both wish to
attend VCU next year.
Savannah and Brooke Musselwhite
are freshman, identical twins
at CHHS. Twins run in their family.
Like the Slaybaughs, they enjoy
spending time together. They play
basketball and softball together.
People have heard the cliché “twin
telepathy” but for Brooke and Savannah,
it is a theory that is all too
true. In eighth grade while playing
in a basketball game, Brooke got a
concussion: her twin Savannah who
was also in the game but had no
physical injuries also felt the effects
of her sister’s concussion. Brooke
points out that one of the best parts
of having a twin is that “I’m never
alone and always have someone to
talk to. While most twins are born minutes apart, Rachael Paul
was born a whole two hours before her twin sister Rebecca was
born. Most people who know Rachael
and Rebecca can only tell the difference
in the sisters because Rachael has
longer hair than Rebecca. These two
share a room--and sometimes even
clothes.
Amanda and Matt McBryde and Rachel
and Brett Dempsey are probably
not who fi rst come to mind when you
think of twins. Rachel and Brett sometimes
even get asked if they are dating!
Rachel and Brett Dempsey
January, 2012
also, Rachel says “Sometimes we will say the same things or
I’ll be thinking something and he’ll say it.”
For Rachel the best part about being a twin is that “We have
a really close relationship and we tell each other everything.”
Amanda and Matt are the fi rst twins in their family. Both
Amanda and Matt are on the CHHS swim team . The two who
“sometimes know if easch other
is upset” according to Amanada,
have also been active members
of the band all four years in high
school.
Amanda, who claims being the
oldest “by 20 seconds” is also
glad to have a twin. She fi nds it
interesting that “When we take
the same classes we’ll miss the
same questions on test.”
Even being different sexes
did not stop their grandpa from
wanting to “buy us matching
clothes” when they were
younger. The same was true for
the Dempsey’s whose parents
“got us matching boy/girl outfi
ts,” explains Rachel.Another
set of fraternal twins are Khayree
and Khayriyyad Fareed. Both
skipped a grade and now are
juniors at CHHS.
Khayree plays Varsity
basketball.
Aaron and Austin
Ellison are juniors
at CHHS. Both are
avid wrestlers having
been on the team for
the past three years.
They both enjoy the
competitiveness and
intensity of the sport and
are known to often win
their matches. They have very similar personalities and their
friend, Carter Cox said “The easiest way to tell them apart is
the birth mark underneath Austin’s eye.”
Austin and Aaron both have dreams of becoming Navy
seals.
Both enjoy each others company and are often seen together
in the hallway. The boys also often take similar classes.
The idea of twins being able to switch identities without
getting caught seems appealing to most students though only
two have attempted to pull it off. Freshman Emily and Ericka
Hacker switched classes in fi fth grade for the day, but unfortunately
they got caught. Seniors Haley and Kellie successfully
pulled off the “switch trick” as freshman in both Mr. Krupp
and Mr. Barrett’s classes. Peter and Paul Baik are another set
of twins at CHHS. Peter is on the Varsity football team and
Paul is the team manager.
Not only do we have students that are twins at CHHS but
also teachers. Math teacher Miss Elizabeth Hume has an
identical twin sister. Miss Hume likes to say she is “the good
twin.” Guidance counselor, Mrs. Gwen Mosley is also a twin.
Both went into the educational fi eld. Many people question
they are twins because of the great difference in appearance
and personality. Mr. Buddy Paliteare is not a twin, however,
he is a triplet, and our only triplet here at CHHS.
“The tongue weighs relatively
nothing, yet so few people can hold
it.” -Anonymous.
Secrets can either make or break
a friendship. Studies show that the
average woman can keep a secret
for 32 minutes.
Over two secrets could potentially
be spilled in the short time of
an hour. That’s two TV shows
playing, a ride up to Richmond
with time to spare, or enough time
for Adam Richman on “Man vs.
Food” to eat four pounds of food.
The “domino effect” tends to be
the brunt of a secret. If everyone
told one person the same secret, the
numbers would start to add up.
The views, ideas, and opinions
in this newspaper are exactly
that, opinions. They are the
opinions of the Colonial Courier
staff and in no way represent
the administration. Prior
to being posted, the school
principal previewed the paper.
“Shh, don’t tell anyone, but….” is
usually the start of a bad situation.
But what yanks the desire to want
to spill the beans? The secret itself
or maybe even just the person it’s
about. Some situations may be
debatable, but others are clearly
not.
“I know things about other people
that I would never tell,” states senior
Paxton Rosser.
The people you confide into
are very crucial. Sometimes the
information handed out, end up in
the hands of someone that shouldn’t
be trusted.
The things you express to people
are just as important as who you tell.
If you are like most people, you’ve
probably said or heard the phrase, a
new year, a new you. This is the
phrase that everybody associates
with the coming of the New Year.
Most people get motivation at
the beginning of the year to set
themselves up for success.
Many New Year’s resolutions
are short-lived, if not completely
forgotten by February. The trick
to making resolutions work is to
follow some steps to set you up for
success.
1. Choose a good resolution for
yourself. You should seriously
think about your resolution. Give
some thought what you really want
and why you want it. You should be
specific in your resolution and make
it official.
2. Choose how you are going to
stay on track. You need to step up
some steps to keep your resolution
going. Create a plan for how you
want to accomplish your goal. Set
boundaries for yourself so you have
a set plan.
3. If necessary, throughout the year
reevaluate your goals and plans.
If you need to reassess what your
expectations are, it is okay to do
so.
4. Reward yourself. Reaching your
goal and keeping yourself there can
be hard work, so even just saying
“good job” or treating yourself to
Some things, no matter how much
you trust the person you confess to,
end up where not intended to be.
Just be forewarned: Sometimes
best friends who know all of your
secrets can become your worst
enemy –the worst enemy that knows
all of your secrets.
Guys are generally trusted more
than girls. Girls tend to be gossip
hungry and excel with juicy secrets.
Most guys don’t care about secrets
as much as girls do.
Typically at sleepovers, guys play
video games, eat tons of food, and
sleep; girls talk, gossip, and talk
some more.
It seems that girls find their
something nice.
5. Don’t give up on your goal.
Even if in a couple of weeks, or
even months your goal is not met
or you don’t keep your resolution,
that’s okay! There is no reason
you cannot make a “New Year’s
resolution” anytime of the year.
Many of the resolutions that are
made are generally the same. Most
people want to spend more time with
family and friends, get in shape,
or simply enjoy life and be happy.
When wanting to spend more time
with family and friends, set aside
a special time or day that you can
do activities with them. Switch up
the activities every now and then. If
you’re one of the people that want
to stay in shape, you don’t need a
pricey gym membership. Just watch
your portion size at meals and try
to make smart, healthy choices.
Instead of eating that candy, grab
an apple. Instead of talking the
escalator, choose the steps instead.
In order to enjoy life, don’t let the
little things get you down. Brush
negative comments off with ease.
If you made a goal for 2012, try
and keep your resolution. Don’t
make it one that you know you will
not be able to stick with for the next
365 days! Try not to forget what the
goal is that you are going towards.
Always believe in yourself and what
you are able to accomplish!
friendship through secrets and
knowing things about other people.
Trusting the right people and
watching what you tell are two
major factors that come into play
with “secret telling.”
“Secrets don’t make friends,
friends make secrets.” Sometimes
it’s just better to be secret free and
if that doesn’t work, not spreading
secrets will benefit everyone.
y Carter Cox
Nov. 6, 2012, better known as
the next Election Day, is a day that
many people are looking forward
to.
On this day, one of two things
will happen. Either the Republicans
will win and take the house or the
Democrats will win and remain in
power. The Democratic candidate
will be present President Barack
Obama seeking his second term.
Few anticipate a serious run from
an Independent candidate.
On the other hand, the Republican
primary has yet to conclude, still
having many candidates fi ghting for
the conservative nomination.
Although there is plenty of
excitement due to this being a
by Ashlie Bradley
President Barack Obama
The semester is coming to a
close, and that can only mean one
thing. It’s me to switch classes.
To many of CHHS’ students, it feels
like it has reached the end of the
year and it’s me for a vaca on.
That, however, is not the case.
They s ll have eighteen more
weeks of classes to endure. That
means four or, in some cases, fi ve,
en rely new classes, teachers, and
around twenty new classmates.
Some students and teachers like
the fact that we get to take four new
classes. They get to switch things
up and not have to bare the burden
of having the same classes all year.
Teachers such as Mrs. Deligan
who teaches Chemistry says that
she likes the idea of having a fresh
start half way through the year.
On the other hand, a handful
of students don’t like the idea
of having to switch classes. They
have become accustomed to their
schedule and do not want a change.
Sweet Frog is now fi nally here
in Colonial Heights. There is no
longer any need to travel all the
way to Chesterfi eld to get a cup of
frozen yogurt.
It’s new and clean and just right
around the corner!
Frozen yogurt is not only incredibly
delicious but also healthy! Whether
you want a light snack or a chocolate
dessert, Sweet Frog has got you
covered.
It has a diverse amount of toppings
that can please all age groups and
Presidential election, the excitement
is not nearly as high as usual
because we are only the decision
for one candidate oppose to making
a decision for two.
In addition, the Republican
candidates do not seem to generate
the usual publicity. This may be due
to the earliness of the campaign;
after all, the fi nal Presidential
election is 10 months away.
Even though Barak Obama is still
President, much of the political
spotlight has faded towards the
Republican primary election. The
candidates that are still in the hunt
are Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich,
Ron Paul, and Rick Santorum.
Right now, according to the polls
on gallup.com, Mitt Romney is
the Republican front runner for
the nomination with a GOP ballot
support of 33%, followed by
Gingrich at 17%, and both Paul and
Santorum at 12%.
Romney has already won the New
Hampshire and Iowa primaries, and
Rick Santorum
with the South Carolina Election
coming up on January 21st , it will
be interesting to see who stays in
the lead and who is celebrating on
Nov. 6.
Recently, Romney suffered a tough
loss against fellow candidate, Newt
Gingrich, in the South Carolina
Primary Election on January 21.
As the time comes closer, the
race between the Republicans
gets tougher, not to mention more
heated! It’ll be a close race this year
as to who will win the Republican
nomination for President.
Ron Paul
satisfy every tongue. The toppings
range from healthy blueberries
and strawberries to fun snacks like
mochi and juice poppers.
Another great reason to visit your
local Sweet Frog is because you get
to have the fun while making your
own concoction.
At Sweet Frog, they only charge
you by how much you get, the less
you get, the cheaper it will be and
vice versa.
There is no limit to how much you
can make! So go on and head on to
Sweet Frog for a tasty treat.
Mitt Romney
Switching classes can be confusing
for some. Having to go back to fi rst
block on the fi rst day of the semester
to get schedules can make things a
li le hec c. Teachers are also confused
about having to distribute reports
cards envelopes and papers since their
homerooms will no longer be the same.
Some students will be more
confused on their fi rst day back than
others. Because of AP classes and
online classes, some students have
two fi rst periods, and some even
two second periods. Which one do
they go to on the fi rst day back?
Either way, we have to face the
fact that we have to switch classes
whether we like it or not. Most
students just hope that they survive
the switch and successfully make
it through the second semester.
GETTING TO KNOW NIGERIAN
by Marissa Ki
For some reason, when the New
year rings in, people feel compeled
to make a resoluon, even thourhg
most people realize the likelihookd
of keeping this resoluon is slim.
Once again it is new year , 2012,
and it’s that me to make empty
goals that end up forgoen.
New Years resoluons are made
because people want to be a
new person and they want to
change themselves for the beer.
Do they keep them? Probably not,
and a few months into the New
Year those resoluons are long
gone. Gyms and health clubs have
new members , who come every
day for the first week. According to
many stascs, by the third week
aendance has dropped drascally.
Some make different resoluons,
like senior Ma McBryde, who
wants to gain weight because “my
PRINCESS
by Lisa Chung
“The United States
opens me to a whole
new whole, a new
way of thinking.”
doctor told me to gain weight.”
According to him, “So far, so good.”
Many resoluons are desned
to fail from the start. But really
why do we make resoluons
if we don’t keep them?
The holiday’s put us on that
“high” (good feeling) and by the
me the New Year comes, we
are all excited for the New Year.
Making resoluons give us a
sense that we will accomplish
something and we’ll be beer
people. Resoluons are more like
intenons and not something
that we know for sure we will
accomplish. Do we really want to
start off the new year with a failure?
Some students, such as senior Zach
Wood, do not make resulons. For
Zach “It requires too much effort to
keep and I just didn’t really feel like it.”
Some may think that we are seng
Anjolaoluwa Ajayi Dufunso but is now known as Princess, entered Colonial
Heights High School this year.
Princess is originally from Nigeria and came to the United States at the age of 15.
It took her family eleven years to get a Visa to come here. The story of her life will
completely blow you away.
The life in Nigeria she said is, “fun and beautiful but the life is hard because of
the bad leaders in Nigeria.”
When Princess lived in Nigeria, she would have to walk five miles each day to
attend a military school. She would have to walk on narrow roads and risk being
mauled by gangs. Students in the United States would do anything they could to
miss a day of school and be a couch potato at home, but while the students were
watching television and lounging on the couch Princess would walk with her
brother through dangerous conditions to go to their classes.
Princess’s classes were insanely difficult and the teachers expected drastic improvements
in the student’s grades.
If students rebelled or made the slightest mistake, they would immediately be
pulled out of class and beaten with metal rods, sticks, switches or anything that was
in the reach of the teacher’s hands. Officers would even be called in to personally
abuse the children. What she enjoys about the U.S. is “being able to learn without
fear, to be able to openly discuss with my teachers and to meet new and different
people.”
Princess still bears the scars of when she was taken out of class for talking while
the teacher was out of class. The scars show what she had to go through to receive
an education.
Princess is grateful to be able to live in the United States but what she is especially
grateful for are bus drivers. She is thankful to know that when school is over,
a school bus will be waiting outside to take her safely home.
When she was asked what is better here than in Nigeria she replied “everything is
better. The U.S. opens me to a whole new world, a new of way of thinking.”
Princess left her home because she wanted to further her education.
She loves that she was able to experience a whole new world by taking a 16 hour
plane ride from Nigeria to America. Princess left her home because she wanted to
further her education. She first moved to Pennsylvania because of family friends
but later moved to Virginia because her parents found new jobs as client counselors.
She enjoys meeting new people. People always comment on how she is one of
the bubbliest and most lively people they have ever met and they are also shocked
after hearing her story of life in Nigeria.
Some interesting facts that people do not know about her is that she knows 20
languages, such as Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa, and Fulani. She also enjoys singing, dancing,
and beading.
When she was asked what she wanted people to know about her she answered,
“My name. My real name.”
Princess plans on attending VCU next year because it is “diverse in culture and is
an excellent school.”
New Year brings New Resolutions
ourselves up for such a failure
when we make resoluons-- but
it’s like a process, we have our ups
and downs. We may not complete
the goal, but we at least recognize
that we need to make changes.
Research says that when
people have someone to support
them on their resoluon, they
are more likely to succeed.
On keeping resoluons Juniorw
Jusn Villanueva says “I just make
them to feel accomplished.” He says
he was able to achieve his resoluon
of making a bank account and saving
money. Junior Andrea Haskins
says “I don’t make resoluons
because I know I can’t keep them”
New Year’s is a me to look forward
and forget the past. It’s a me to
make new beginnings for ourselves.
Tips on keeping
resolutions
1. Get specific about
the resolutions. (ex.
Lose 15 pounds
instead of losing
weight.)
2. Write it down
3. Make time
4. Move forward forget
the past and don’t
doubt yourself
5. Get support and
maybe a partner
6. Stay positive
Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol
In its weekend of opening, Mission
The Darkest Hour did not live
up to my expectations. Maybe
it was the lack of “3D” action
it conveyed or the fact that
all of the good scenes were already
seen on the commercials.
$13.50 could have gotten me two
meals from Cookout and some
change. Beside the fact, The
Darkest Hour left me wondering
why I spent my Christmas
night at a movie that let me down.
Entertainment Weekly: Keith
Staskiewicz comments, “You
The characters in the movie weren’t explained thoroughly,
the back stories on them were left out, leaving the audience
wondering why they were fighting for their lives.
The concept of the movie was good, the execution was poorly
done. I wish that with the 89 minutes of time and wasted $13.50,
they could have made it more exhilarating and suspenseful.
It was almost as if you could tell what was going to happen
But what is so great about this up and coming trend? The glasses
that it comes with or the rush you get right before the movie starts?
Junior Sarah Staples states, “I like 3D movies
because it makes the movie seem more realistic.”
But despite their “realistic” viewings, what happens
when a movie lets you down? Movies are overpriced
as it is and that extra $3.50 is gone for good.
Having to buy a new pair of glasses each time is an
even bigger waste. It seems as if 3D movies were
a lot more fascinating as a young kid. Junior Mark
Martino states, “I liked them better as a kid, they were cooler than.”
The main target is the younger kids. The whole experience
it a lot more different when you’re excited
to put on 3D glasses and watch things pop out at you.
“I think it’s just an excuse for movie people to take
your money. They just rob you blind,” quotes se-
the Kremlin, leaving them with
no help or back up of any sort.
There has been some talk about
a fifth Mission Impossible but the
rumors have yet to be confirmed.
Mission Impossible is two hours of
exhilarating action and nonstop attention
grabbing. Its vigorous scenes and
risky attempts keep your mind from
wandering and your thoughts wondering
about what will happen next.
Shiver
by Maggie Stiefvater
by Marissa Ki
The cold, the heat, and the shiver. New York Times bestseller Shiver by
Maggie Stiefvater is the perfect novel for fans who enjoyed the Twilight
Saga. Shiver is the beginning of the 3 part series, The Wolves of Mercy Falls.
The chapters alternate voices and point of views between the two main
characters, Grace and Sam. Grace is a girl who has a deep interest in wolves,
especially the ones in the woods behind her house. Sam is a wolf during colder
climates, but he changes into his human form during the warmer climates.
Grace has always had this feeling that
she knows the yellow-eyed wolf (Sam.)
When Sam is a wolf, Grace and Sam always
keep a distance between themselves
but they are always watching each other.
Sam in his human form sees Grace, but
he can’t seem to have a conversation with
her because he is too nervous. After an unusual
change from wolf to human, Sam and
Grace’s love for each other cannot be denied.
Grace has past scars and the future for the
both of them is unknown. They both have to
fight for the present that’s as fragile as glass.
The story, which is an easy read, of Grace
and Sam continues with the sequel Linger
and is then followed by Forever, which
is the last book in this breathtaking series.
nior Christian Kochuba. In fact, sometimes the movie
doesn’t have enough 3D action to be considered “3D”.
Titanic, Beauty and the Beast, and a lot more Disney Pixar
movies have come or are coming back to the big screen in 3D.
A handful of people think it’s a waste of time and money
due to the fact that it’s the same movie just
made to seem cool and lure in young viewers;
but, plenty of people attend the showings.
3D movies definitely have their pros and
cons. But I absolutely dislike having to wear
the 3D glasses over my prescribed ones.
Soon 3D movies will be everywhere;
in theaters, in your home,
and maybe even in schools one day down the road.
Though the movies bring unique and realistic action to life, the
movie theaters are pocket hungry and making a lot of money off of it.
As long as it is an action packed movie with things actually
popping out at you, than the movie could be filled with fun.
Always be cautious when deciding what movies you see in 3D.
The popular MTV show, Jersey Shore,
first aired in December of 2009. The series
follows eight housemates that all share a
common similarity. The Jersey Guido/
Guidette lifestyle. They all have the tan
skin, the big hair, and the scandalous
outfits.
The season 1 and 2 cast consisted of Paul
Friday, Jan 13. Some people
may think of it as a day to stay
inside and to avoid any possible
incidents, but that wasn’t the case
for the Rascal Flatts fans of Virginia.
Fans traveled from various
locations ranging from 3 hours to
10 minutes away and made their
way to the Roanoke Civic Center to
see Rascal Flatts’ Thaw Out 2012
Tour. The dedicated fans braved
the cold just to pack themselves
into the filled arena to witness the
amazing concert that awaited them.
Up and rising country sensation,
Hunter Hayes, opened the concert,
playing several of his number
one singles such as Somebody’s
Heartbreak, Wanted, and Storm
Warning. He did a fantastic job of
pumping up the crowd to get them
ready for the main attraction,
Rascal Flatts. Hayes entertained
the audience for roughly 30
minutes and then left the stage,
leaving everyone excited and
anticipating what was to come.
The next performer to take
the stage was Sarah Evans.
She enlightened the audience
with her incredible vocals and
charming, witty sense of humor.
Evans made sure to get her fans
on their feet with upbeat vibes
as she paraded around the stage,
dancing and having a great time.
After about an hour of putting on
a great show, Evans left the stage.
That only meant one thing. It
was time for the main attraction.
Seattle Grace Mercy West Hospital
is at it again! The eighth season of
Grey’s Anatomy has started back up
after its two month hiatus. Ever since
2005, Grey’s Anatomy has been one
of the most popular medical dramas
on TV.
The title Grey’s Anatomy is actually
a play on words. It is a reference to
both Henry Gray’s medical textbook
Gray’s Anatomy, and the main
character Meredith Grey played by
Ellen Pompeo.
The series has received a number of
awards. It has won the Golden Globe
Award for Best Television Series-
Drama, two Emmy nominations for
Outstanding Drama series, received
three Emmy awards and numerous
other awards and nominations for
acting, writing, and directing.
In 2011, Grey’s Anatomy was the
The fist pumping returns to MTV!
Magro, Sammi “Sweetheart” Giancola,
Vinny Guadagnino, and Angelina
Pivarnick. Unfortunately, Angelina
Pivarnick did not complete the first
season, but did return to South Beach for
season 2.
The cast for season 3 and onward
consists of the same eight members, but
replacing Angelina Pivarnick with long
time friend of Snooki, Deena Nicole
Cortese.
Most of the cast members are from an
Italian background, but two do not have
any Italian blood in them. Snooki is of
Chilean background, but was adopted
by an Italian American family when she
was an infant. The other cast member not of
Italian blood is JWoww. She is of Irish and
Spanish origin.
The reality show is normally set in Seaside
Heights, New Jersey, but has taken on other
settings in different seasons. The Shore was
filmed in South Beach, Florida for their
second season due to a large amount of snow
storms hitting the North East coast. The third
season was able to return the Seaside house,
while the fourth season went international!
The cast and crew packed their bags and
set off to the “Motherland,” Italy. Season 5
picked up as soon as the cast stepped off the
plane and hit the Jersey Shore again.
It all started with the sounds of
drums beating in complete darkness.
Then the lights started to flash on
and off. Out of nowhere, the entire
stage lights up and the Rascal Flatts
trio had taken over the stage. The
way they introduced themselves
was incredible and left the audience
screaming and on their feet.
Rascal Flatts varied their songs
throughout the concert varying from
upbeat songs to slow ones. At times
lead band member, Gary, would
hold the mic out for the audience to
sing and they captured the moment
by taking over and singing for him.
Not only did they wow everyone
with their singing, but they also
added a little comedy to the
concert with their short little skits.
fourth highest revenue earning show
with $2.67 million per half hour.
The series is about a group of
surgical interns, residents, and
various other doctors who work
at Seattle’s most valued teaching
hospital, Seattle Grace Mercy West.
The doctors at the hospital try to
balance their personal live with
their work life.
Every Thursday night at 9, turn on
ABC and you will be able to see all
of the excitement for yourself!
The houses are set up with numerous
cameras to watch the casts every move.
A camera crew also follows them around
everywhere they go. The housemates are
also not allowed to have any cell phones,
computers, television, or radio. The
production company did provide them with
SUVs to travel around town (also equipped
with cameras).
These work-out obsessed, tanning,
laundry do-ers have their own drama to
deal with, but the drama is intensified by
putting all eight of these people together.
To be caught up with all the drama, tune
into MTV on Thursday nights at 10pm!
They made sure to get everyone
laughing and in a good mood.
As it neared the end of the concert
and it came time to close the show,
Rascal Flatts honored the military by
having Marines come out on stage
while they sang their final song.
Afterwards the trio ran all over the
stage thanking everyone for coming.
They then left the stage, leaving
everyone excited and speechless.
1. Why did you start the Model UN, and what
do you like best about it now?
It is a great opportunity for students to learn
about international relations. I love learning
about other countries and world politics and
wanted to spread that passion to my students. I
love my members! They are passionate about
what they are doing for the club!
2. We understand you are graduated from
VCU; how was your experience there?
Great! I loved every second of it! I loved the idea
of being in the city but also being on campus. The
diversity of the people and surroundings really
opend my eyes to lots of new things! I feel like a
more well-rounded person by attending there.
3. You are a social studies teacher with a dog
named Clinton: any special reason why?
Believe it or not I just liked the name, it just fit
him. The name Truman or Roosevent just didn’t
work!
4. How do you like teaching on a block schedule?
I actually taught on it before at my old school. It has
its ups and downs, but I just go with the flow and try
not to worry about situations I can’t control. It takes
some getting use to!
5. What one time in history would you love to live
in, and why that period?
The 1920s- full of fun (until 1929) and no war
6. As junior class sponsor, are you looking forward
to Ring Dance?
Yes! We have an awesome and very unique theme
this year! I really want to see the way it turns out!
7. What is the hardest part of your job? fs
Not living my job 24/7! I try to make time for
myself but sometimes it’s hard. Teaching is not like
any other 9-5 job. Your wheels are always spinning.
I’ve had to learn to try to not let my professional life
overflow into my personal life.
8. History teachers here tend to have favorite movies,
so what is yours…and why?
Believe it or not nothing history related! Pretty Woman-
love Julia Roberts! A Time to Kill- the message behing
this movie is very moving.
9. What is something that no one knows about you?
I love riding four wheelers (ATVs). My husband and I
have taken multiple trips to various places to ride! My
favorite was the Hatfield McCoy trails in West Virginia.
We also ride every summer with my family!
10. If you were not a history teacher at Colonial Heights,
what would you be doing?
Hmmm...If I could buy a farm that would be so much fun!
On a more serious note, probably something involving politics,
international relations, or homeland security.
RACING THEIR WAY
TO THE FINISH LINE
by Colleen Yates
“They (track team) are their
hardest competitors,” states Mr.
Sederick Green. “They don’t
understand why I make them
run a long time in practice. It
prepares them for the meet and
so they can improve and have a
better time.”
In track there are no winners or
losers. Your record times get you
qualified for districts.
When asked what he looked
forward to this year, Mr. Green
stated, “Getting people to commit
to track and putting forth their
best effort. He also wants them
to have a positive mindset about
their running and that they can
do it.”
The captains for the Colonials
are senior Abigail Rigby and
junior Nick Ball.
The Colonials have talent all
around the team. Mr. Green says
the best sprinter is Christopher
Charleston; high jumper, Nick
Keene; long jumper, Nick
Ball; distance runners, Abigail
Rigby and Erin Page. The best
improvements are Ashleigh Rush
and Andrew Walker.
Mr. Green thinks that the teams’
best aspect is, “The bond that
they have between each other.
They are cohesive.”
Ivan Jiminez, who runs the 55
meter hurdles and 4x2 relays,
agrees with Mr. Green about the
dedication. “This team has the
potential to be an amazing track
team. Everybody has improved
and we are becoming faster. All
we need to do is work out some
little things and we can reach that
goal.”
The track team traveled to
Hampton to compete in an
invitational on Jan. 13. Only
four girls, Jania Marrow, Kelly
Spaine, Kristine Blimline, and
Kaitlyn Foster went.
The boys who participated
were, Kyle Hogwood, Greyson
Shinault, Nicholas Ball, Nick
Keene, Andrew Walker, Langdon
Conklin, Austin Scruggs,
DaQuennis Sutton, Trevor Shoot,
Ted Hinojosa, Linwood Fraher,
and Christopher Charleston.
The Colonial Heights High
School boys basketball team has
spent countless hours practicing
and preparing for their games.
Despite their hard work, the Colonials
have had some tough losses
against Petersburg, Hopewell,
Trinity, Dinwiddie, Prince
George, Varina Meadowbrook,
Collegiate, and Thomas Dale.
Over the winter holiday, the
Colonial had a defeated King
William with a score of 72-43.
The Colonials had a great win
over Appomattox Regional Governor
School with a score of 75-16.
Senior J.D. Hicks said, “Basketball
keeps us on our toes and out of
trouble. Our team works so hard,
probably more than most teams in
our district; we even work off the
court. It really helps us grow as a
team. Basketball has changed me a
whole lot and I always look forward
to going to practice and games.”
Before the game against Mataoca
on Friday Jan. 20, the Colonials
had a team talk about trust
and how they need to learn how
to play together. The Colonials
played a fantastic game with
an 88-84 win. The Colonials
were in the lead the entire game!
Hicks said, “Game wise, it
is just up and down. We fight
strong but we sometimes fall
out of it by the 4th quarter. “
The Colonials have four regular
season games left. Come
out on Jan. 27 and February 7 to
see the Colonials play against
The girls basketball team at
CHHS has had a tough season,
but continues to stick together.
The girls team lost nine players
last year. One of these players
Berkley Branzelle said, “I decided
this year not to play basketball because
I really wanted to concentrate
on my grades and college
since it’s my senior year.” But despite
the losses of the team, they
still have had a good season so far.
The Lady Colonials defeated
the Petersburg Crimson Wave on
January 17 with a score of 33-30.
The team has also had some good
wins against Matoaca, Dinwiddie,
and Prince Edward County
Junior Beth Laughlin said, “It’s
been a hard year but we have a
good team and have really stuck together.
I love playing basketball!”
Colonial Heights High School is
the smallest school in the Central
District. With a student body
population fewer than 1,000, some
might think that competing with a
school such as Thomas Dale, another
school in the Central District with
roughly 2,000 students, is unfair.
Some argue that for sports,
Colonial Heights just doesn’t have
the kids to pull from in order to be
competitive. Is that the truth, or just
a mere excuse?
Other schools in the Central District
have set times for conditioning in the
offseason for each sport. Now not
only are athletes putting in the extra
hours of hard work and dedication,
but the team is too.
In sports such as football,
basketball, and baseball it is
important to perform well as an
individual, but in order to win you
must play as a team.
Winning is a team effort. Not
every game won is due to one
players performance, but won by a
contribution from every player on
the team.
Over the past couple of seasons,
Colonial Heights athletics has
started to take a step in the right
direction. Now these three sports,
football, basketball, and baseball,
all have offseason conditioning
open to anyone wishing to come try
out for the team and for returning
players.
In the summer, basketball players
in our small town are waking up
early and working most mornings at
the high school. They are shooting,
running drills, and putting in the
time and effort in the weight room
each day.
Starting in late November, the
baseball in Colonials Heights
starts back up. Every Tuesday
and Wednesday evening, baseball
players in our high school are in
the auxiliary gym taking countless
amounts of cuts, improving theirs
swings and quickness of hands.
Just starting in this January, every
morning before school the football
team is now able to come and lift
weights. They also are able to go
lift weights after school at the field
house located over at our football
field.
Now that the athletes that play
these sports are putting in the extra
TEAM hours, Colonial Heights
athletics hopes to take a drastic leap
in the next few seasons.
by Colleen Yates
The Colonial Wrestling team broke
the school record of 25 wins this
year.
Colonial Jerrid Whaling is the first
wrestler in school history to reach
100 wins during his junior year. He
also went to the state tournament
last year, and hopes to repeat that
this year.
The captains for the Colonials are
Zac Firesheets, Tyler Russell, and
Justin Trent.
The Colonials best aspect says
team captain Zac Firesheets, “We
stick together no matter what. We
are like a family and we respect
each other like we are kin to each
other.”
The Colonials have a variety of
wrestlers on the team. Some, like
Justin Trent, have been wrestling
for 12 years, but others have only
been wrestling for a short while.
They have all gotten better at what
they do how they do it. Wrestling is
an intense sport, and the Colonials
keep up with it by running and
climbing stairs most afternoons. In
addition, they have to make weight
for each match.
Firesheets states, “We look at every
competition as the hardest one and
never look past anything because
the minute you do, you are going to
get upset.”
In wrestling the team is always
setting more goals to reach once
they have accomplished their
existing ones. “You work hard dayin
and day-out to reach then and
that’s the difference separating you
and everyone else,” states Zac.
On Jan. 18 the wrestling team
defeated Hopewell (54-22) and
Petersburg (55-23) to complete their
regular season district schedule.
The wrestling team finished the
regular season in second place, a
very satisfying finish.
Colonial Heights will host the
district wrestling tournament on
Feb. 4 at 10 AM, with high hopes of
doing well.
How did you feel when you were told
you were Athlete of the Month?
I felt extremely grateful. Blessed.
What do you like most about
basketball?
I like to compete against good players,
I love the adrenaline rush when my
team and I are doing well.
How did you get started playing
basketball?
When I was about 10, my dad started
teaching me about the game. And I
simply fell in love with it.
Who is your role model?
Harold Deane; All me ACC great
player.
Has anyone infl uenced you to play
basketball?
My father has always mo vated me to
work hard at playing basketball.
How much me do you spend on
training per year?I train three to six
hours EVERY DAY. I don’t take days
off . I try to get the upper hand on
opponents.
Athletes
Tracy Akers
How did you feel when you were told
you were Athlete of the Month?
When I had the ques onnaire set in front
of me, I simply stared at it and smiled. I
was surprised that despite my injuries, I
was s ll chosen. It was a very…hopeful
moment.
What do you like most about basketball?
I think that the most alluring part of
basketball for me is that when I’m on
the court I don’t have to worry about my
homework, or that AP test the next day…I
don’t feel any pain, all I have to do is play.
Perhaps it’s the simplicity of it.
How did you get started playing
basketball?
I began playing at an incredibly young age
and my dad helped me develop my love
for the sport.
Who is your role model?
I have several infl uen al peoples in my life
. Defi nitely my en re family, my parents
and each one of my sisters teach me new
things every day. Also, where would I be
without the lovely Mrs. Crowder: she is an
amazing woman!
Has anyone infl uenced you to play
basketball?
That would defi nitely be my dad. He is the
reason I started back in the day.
How much me do you spend on training
per year?
Man, every summer since I was about 5,
I’ve devoted every summer to training
about 4 or 5 days a week. I’ve played
AAU travel basketball since I was seven,
which takes up a good 6 months a year. If
you throw in my high school season, I’m
How do you train for basketball?
I usually li weights fi rst, then I MAKE
at least 300 shots. Just shoo ng shots
doesn’t make you be er, making
shots does.
What’s on your iPod playlist?
-Riot by 2 Chainz
-Spend it by 2 Chainz
-Megaman by Lil’ Wayne
What song gets you prepared for a
game?
Riot and Spend it by 2 Chainz (that’s
all I need).
Do you play basketball compe vely
constantly playing!
How do you train for basketball?
I’ve followed my fi rst trainer/coach
around all my life. We started off at U-
Turn in Richmond, then he started Three
Point Line Sports…and he is currently a
trainer/coach at Sports Quest: At all of
these places throughout my life I’ve spent
years in condi oning and of course, just
being on the court.
What’s on your iPod playlist?
This is going to be tricky…..
This is war- 30 seconds to Mars
I Hope This Gets To You- the Daylights
Mumford and Sons
Paradise-Coldplay
Love and Despair-I am Empire
Your love is a song-Switchfoot
A nice li le mixture of rock, indie,
country, and soul
What song gets you prepared for a
game?
This is war-30 seconds to Mars
Do you play basketball compe vely
outside of school?
Defi nitely, AAU travel basketball since I
of the
outside of school?
I’ve played for over fi ve diff erent AAU
teams.
What was the most challenging thing
about playing defense?
Moving my big stupid feet. I wear size
13 shoes, and it’s kind of diffi cult to
slide them.
Do you have any special techniques
to mentally prepare for a game?
I listen to 2 Chainz, eat Rigatoni Alla
Vodka form Dante’s, and go to TJ
Daniel’s house.
What is your most memorable
moment playing basketball?
When I was a freshman, I won the 3point
contest at the Paul-Webb team
camp.
What do you do in your spare me?
I enjoy wri ng music, hanging out
with girls, and sleeping.
Any favorite sports teams?
I am a Pi sburg Steelers fan and I like
the Chicago Bulls.
Where do you want to go to college
or where are you a ending college?
I actually haven’t decided yet. I would
love to go play for a Division 1 college,
was seven.
Month
What was the most challenging thing
about playing defense?
Ge ng in front of your defender just in
me to take a charge, it’s an art!
Do you have any special techniques to
mentally prepare for a game?
Praying—tends to work best in any life
situa on
What is your most memorable moment
playing basketball?
I guess my tenth grade year, when I came
back from all of my physical obstacles in
the previous year.
What do you do in your spare me?
When I do have spare me (haha), I love
to read and write
Has being injured aff ected the way you
approach playing basketball?
I wouldn’t say that it aff ects my physical
game as much as it does my mental game.
I think about the game diff erently, as well
as my life. All of my physical obstacles
throughout high school have changed my
en re thinking process.
Any favorite sports teams?
Girl’s college basketball- Tennessee Vols
NBA-Cel cs
NFL-Redskins (despite our quarterback
issues )
What mo vates you to do your best?
Probably just playing for God…a er
all, he brought me back to the game I
love. With him on my side, my family’s
encouragement and my stubbornness/
where I can play compe vely and get
a good educa on, because educa on
is the most important.
Do you have any specifi c goals for the
future?
I want to go on and play college
basketball and major in zoology, then
pursue my music career a er college
What mo vates you to do your best?
I want to go to college on a
scholarship so my family doesn’t
have to pay for college. I want to get
a college degree so that I can make
more money, and have to live the way
I do now. I want to prove to everyone
that I can play basketball at a higher
level, because when I was li le, I was
told I would never be good enough.
determina on , there’s plenty of
mo va on
Do you plan on playing basketball at the
University of Richmond?
Haha, everyone seems to be asking this
ques on! I got into U of R based on my
academics and etc., and it has always
been my dream to go to the school and
also to play for the Spiders. I’ve turned
down a lot of college off ers to fulfi ll my
dream of going to Richmond. The coach
has approached my family and I, along
with my AAU
coaches, about
coming to play
for their team as
a walk on. They
are encouraging
me to come and
play for them
. So I do plan
on doing so my
freshman year.
Do you have any
specifi c goals for
the future?
Well now that
I know what
college I’m going
to, I can relax a
li le about my
future. I’m s ll
undecided in the
career area, but
I know that I will
fi gure it out in me.
