PHILANDER SMITH COLLEGE MISSION STATEMENT Philander Smith College's mission is to grant access to higher education to individuals who are, or who have the potential to be academically talented, regardless of their social, economic, or educational background. This includes the holistic development of students, the goal of helping them reach their potential as human beings, and contributing members of society, the preparation of students for life in this pluralistic, complex, and technological society, and enabling students to understand other cultures. A key aspect of the College's mission is the pursuit of excellence through the provision of a quality college education for all, regardless of race, religion, sex, national origin, ethic or background. Philander Smith College is a small, privately supported, historically black, four-year liberal arts, career-oriented college, related to the Board of Higher Education and Ministry of The United Methodist Church and The United Negro College Fund. The College maintains an academic environment that fosters a love of learning, a spirit of independent inquiry, the free exchange of ideas, a broad and active Christian life, and a concern for the world at large. ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT MISSION STATEMENT The mission of the Philander Smith College Athletic Department is to identify student athletes with special athletic talents, and to help them highlight their talents, while supporting them as they achieve their educational endeavors. The department will encourage, promote, and mentor our student athletes to reach great athletic success, and high academic goals. We will help our student athletes to look beyond the playing field and prepare for life after sports. It’s important to us, as an athletic department to help our student athletes adopt the colleges’ attitude to “Think Justice.” Within this broad mission are the responsibilities to use quality instruction and coaching to instill in student athletes a lifelong desire to learn, to use knowledge in ways that will contribute to society; and to apply their learned skills of the college community and to the serve this great nation in ways that will benefit humanity. 8
STANDARDS OF ETHICAL CONDUCT Student athletes are expected to represent Philander Smith College in an honorable manner at all times. Standards of ethical conduct are established and enforced by the NAIA and Philander Smith College. All student athletes are expected to comply with the general conduct and ethics guidelines specified below. Philander Smith College responsibility is to exercise control of its athletic program and to keep it within the bounds of the educational process. Philander Smith College responsibility is also to promote the general public’s understanding of this point of view and its appreciation of the educational values which are derived from a properly balanced program of intercollegiate sports. Philander Smith College responsibility is to ensure that all individuals employed by or directly associated with its athletic program conduct themselves in a sportsmanlike manner. Documented unsportsmanlike conduct (including but not limited to fighting, verbal abuse or other negative behavior) by student athlete will not be tolerated and is subject to disciplinary action. Public remarks regarding Philander Smith College policy or other athletic matters, including officiating, which denigrate Philander Smith College, individuals or other institutions will not be tolerated and are subject to disciplinary action. SPORTSMANSHIP Participation in athletics serves to develop not only physical skills, but also character, civility, and sportsmanship. As a student athlete at Philander Smith College, you represent your team, the athletic department, and the college at all times, whether in the playing arena or outside the playing arena. As a representative of Philander Smith College you are expected to represent yourself with the highest standards of honesty, integrity, and sportsmanship at all times. You must always exhibit the honor and dignity of fair play and uphold the standards of ethical conduct established by the NAIA, and the college. Sportsmanship is accepting victory or defeat graciously. It is not only the absence of negative public actions, but also it is the existence of outward positive actions. Some behaviors deemed unsportsmanlike by Philander Smith College and the NAIA include: verbal or physical abuse of game officials, opponents, coaches, college or conference administrators, or spectators; public criticism of game officials, opponents, coaches or university or conference administrators; use of obscene or otherwise inappropriate language or gestures; throwing objects and any other action that violates the generally recognized ethical standards of athletics participation. Unsportsmanlike conduct may result in disciplinary action being taken against a student athlete. ACADEMIC SUPPORT SERVICES Philander Smith College and the Athletic Department provides academic support for our student athletes. However, we recognize that you, the student athlete, ultimately determine the course of your own academic and athletic career. Therefore, it is expected that you act responsibly to the Athletic Department, Philander Smith College, and most importantly to yourself.
