All our brick, full-face and thin, is made primarily from local, natural, nontoxic
elements from the earth—sand, gravel, crushed stone and clay. Brick
is not flammable, will not react with other materials and does not release
chemicals into its surroundings.
At Hanson Brick, our manufacturing process re-uses all the waste we create,
so we don’t contribute to unproductive landfills. Because brick lasts
indefinitely, it has no life cycle end. It can ei ther be recycled or repurposed
into other useful materials like kitty litter, backfill/aggregates, and even
landscaping materials for tennis courts, baseball fields and flower beds.
Helpful Facts on Strength,
Durability, Beauty
and Sustainability
p 16 Texas Collection Commercial Brick Guide
Sustainability
Using Hanson Brick lets you express your personal style while keeping
a modest environmental footprint. Using the earth’s raw materials, our
manufacturing processes are increasingly clean and efficient. Brick
manufacturing takes less energy than that of concrete, glass, aluminum
and possibly even wood*. And brick walls have a superior life-cycle cost
savings due to brick’s low maintenance, weather resistance and
structural values. Additionally, the thermal mass effect (slow transfer
of heat and cold) can help reduce energy costs as well. So go ahead,
be beautiful without the guilt.
Quality and Performance
Hanson Brick fully backs the quality and performance of our clay brick
with a detailed warranty. Our brick is manufactured to meet or exceed
the requirements of the ASTM C216 Severe Weather Grade. A minimal
amount of inspection and maintenance will ensure your clay brick
cladding will endure for many years to come. For further details,
please contact Hanson’s technical services.
Brick Veneer
The brickwork on a house is a highly durable wall finish. Between the
brick and the backup wall there is an air cavity that provides both a
capillary break and a drainage path for moisture. Should moisture
penetrate the veneer (a normal occurrence), the moisture will flow down
the cavity to the flashing and out of the weep holes, protecting the more
moisture-sensitive materials of the backup wall.
Color & Texture
Color of brick and texture variation within any production run is an
inherent part of the manufacturing process. It is not possible to include
these variations in photography and normal sampling. Different types
of mortar joints and the color of the mortar do affect the overall look of
brickwork and can lead to a perceived color difference.
Waterproofing Sealers
Hanson Brick does not approve of the use of waterproofing sealers.
Sealers can affect the breathability of the brickwork and reduce the
durability and life expectancy of the brick due to water retention.
Efflorescence
Efflorescence is a white powdery deposit of water soluble salts
sometimes found on the brick surface. Efflorescence is not harmful to
brick masonry. Once the moisture within the building materials used in
construction dries out to the ambient humidity, no further efflorescence
should be expected and should disappear of its own accord with normal
weathering.
In-person
Online
Available Courses
Hanson offers the following AIA/CES programs.
Each program qualifies for 1 HSW credit.
Effective Flashing with Brick Masonry
Our flashing course will help you design and construct highperforming
masonry building enclosures, by instructing you on the
physics of moisture movement within masonry assemblies, good
detailing practices that manage moisture movement, and good
installation practices that help ensure durable masonry construction.
Movement Joints
Our movement joints program will help you design and construct
durable masonry walls, by learning the underlying causes of brick
masonry movement and cracking, the types and locations of joints
that properly accommodate brick movement, and how movement
joints can be integrated into brick architecture.
Brick Veneer and Steel Stud Walls
To assist you in designing and constructing durable and attractive
masonry walls, this program will teach you how to identify and
select the key components of brick veneer and steel stud wall
assemblies, coordinate the quality requirements for brick veneer and
steel stud walls in drawings and specifications, and enforce design
and construction best practices for brick veneer and steel stud wall
assemblies.
Moisture Control and Brick Masonry
This program will help you design and construct high-performing
masonry building enclosures, by teaching you the physics of
moisture movement within masonry assemblies, good detailing
practices that manage moisture movement, and good installation
practices that help ensure durable masonry construction.
Manufacturing and Specifying of Brick Masonry
To assist you in the design and construction of durable and
attractive masonry walls, our manufacturing and specifying course
will teach you about the relationship between brick raw materials,
brick manufacturing methods, and the behavior of brick units in
completed installations. Upon completion, you will be better able to
select and specify brick for different project types and climate zones
based upon brick performance requirements and testing procedures.
Efflorescence
Brick masonry is occasionally subject to the phenomenon of
efflorescence, when salts residing largely in the mortar are
transported to the surface of the brick. This superficial deposit is
harmless but unattractive, and causes concern for some building
owners. This program explains the principal causes of efflorescence
and the steps the designer and the masonry installer can take to
limit its formation.
Sustainable Design in Brick Masonry
This program will educate you on how to recommend green rating
systems in the context of overall sustainable design goals, integrate
masonry elements into a sustainable design strategy, and document
the use of masonry as a component of achieving LEED project
certification.
