DUCKWORTH FAMILY CHART SOUTH USA<br />

The Saxon Chronicle, compiled by monks <strong>in</strong> the 10th century , now reposes <strong>in</strong> the British<br />

Museum. It is a history of the Saxon settlement <strong>in</strong> England.<br />

History researchers have exam<strong>in</strong>ed reproductions of such ancient manuscripts as the Doomsday<br />

Book (1086), the Regman Rolls (1291-1296~ the Curia Regis Rolls, the Pipe Rolls, the Hearth<br />

Rolls, parish registers, baptismal records, and tax records. Historians found the first record of the<br />

name <strong>Duckworth</strong> <strong>in</strong> Cambridgeshire where the records had been stored from early times.<br />

The name, <strong>Duckworth</strong>, occurred <strong>in</strong> many records, manuscripts, and documents throughout the<br />

centuries. The name <strong>Duckworth</strong> was spelled many different ways. From time to time the surname<br />

was spelled <strong>Duckworth</strong>, Dukeward, Duckword, Duckwort, Duckwart, Dickward, and Dickwort.<br />

These variations <strong>in</strong> spell<strong>in</strong>g frequently occurred even between father and son.<br />

.Scribes and church officials frequently spelled the name phonetically. As a result the same<br />

persons name would be recorded differently on birth, baptismal, marriage, and death certificates.<br />

..The Saxon race gave birth to many English surnames, not the least of which was the surname<br />

<strong>Duckworth</strong>. The Saxons, <strong>in</strong>vited <strong>in</strong>to England by the ancient Britons of the 4th century, were a<br />

fair-sk<strong>in</strong>ned people. Their home was <strong>in</strong> the Rh<strong>in</strong>e valley. They were led by two brothers,<br />

Commanders Hengist and Norsa. The Saxons settled <strong>in</strong> the county of Kent, <strong>in</strong><br />

"-" southern England. Dur<strong>in</strong>g the next four hundred years, they forced the ancient Britons back<br />

<strong>in</strong>to Wales and Cornwall <strong>in</strong> the west and Cumberland <strong>in</strong> the north. The Angles occupied the<br />

eastern coast; the south folk occupied Suffolk; and the north folk occupied Norfolk. Under Saxon<br />

rule, England prospered under a series of High K<strong>in</strong>gs, the last of which was Harold.<br />

In 1066, the Normans <strong>in</strong>vaded from France and were victorious <strong>in</strong> the Battle of Hast<strong>in</strong>gs. In 1070,<br />

Duke William took an army of 40,000 north and wasted the northern counties, forc<strong>in</strong>g many<br />

rebellious Norman nobles and Saxons to flee over the border <strong>in</strong>to Scotland. The Saxons who<br />

rema<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> the south were not treated well under hostile Norman rule, and many also moved<br />

northward .<br />

One of the earliest records of a <strong>Duckworth</strong> <strong>in</strong> America was <strong>John</strong><br />

<strong>Duckworth</strong>, under a four-year <strong>in</strong>denture, was one of 23 persons "imported<br />

<strong>in</strong>to this prov<strong>in</strong>ce .... Registered <strong>in</strong> the Secretary's books of<br />

Records,"<br />
