VILLAGE NEWS TINTERN MONDAY GROUP A Magistrate and a Probation Officer came to talk to us at the October meeting of Tintern Monday Group. The subject was “Understanding local crime sentencing” which was obviously a subject of interest as we were able to welcome several visitors to the meeting. The speakers both explained what their jobs entail and how the Magistrate and Probation Officer work closely together in order to give a fair sentence. We then went through a mock case. Firstly we read a newspaper report of a crime that had been committed and from this story about half the people thought the offender should be imprisoned. Then we heard the Probation Officer’s report giving more details of the offence showing how distorted and sensationalised the newspaper report had been. We were also given more details of the offender’s background. After all this information and much discussion the number who thought that the correct punishment was prison was greatly reduced. It was a very interesting afternoon with much questioning and discussion. The next meeting of Tintern Monday Group will be on Monday 19 th November at 2.00pm in Tintern Village Hall. A local person Rhian Michael will give a talk on her time spent at the Tumaini Children’s Home in Kenya. As always if the subject interests you do come along and join us. TINTERN VILLAGE PRODUCE ASSOCIATION The Autumn season of talks for the VPA continued with the October meeting held on Friday 19 October. Several members attended to listen to the talk given by Mr Chris Stephens on “Dry Stone Walling. Members learnt about the different regional styles of walling around the country (and world) and how important it is to keep this tradition going. Dry stone walling in Britain stretches back several thousand years, to the village of Skara Brae in the Orkneys, and the Iron Age brochs of northern and western Scotland. They play an important part in maintaining the British landscape and in attracting tourism to rural areas. Imagine all those fields and footpaths without dry stone walls creating boundaries, keeping stock enclosed, etc. Even around Tintern you can still see several walls built in centuries gone by - take a look at the field boundaries, the footpaths and around the churchyards. The competition – an autumn leaf - was won by Judith Dudley with Dave Tuffery and Jean Bathgate as runners up. The next event in the VPA calendar is on Friday 16 November at the village hall with a talk by Mrs E Woods on “Fungi”.. The meeting starts at 7.30pm and all are welcome; tea, coffee and biscuits are available after the talk. The competition is a vegetable person so have a rummage in your vegetable boxes and see how creative you can be. HAPPA Throughout November - Sunday Lunches - Home cooked 2-course Sunday Lunch £7.95. VILLAGE NEWS THE CHURCH LADS & CHURCH GIRLS BRIGADE After the successful first night on Tuesday the 9 th of October we are now up and running. The only change being that all future meetings will be on Monday nights starting at 6:30 in the village hall. A full programme of activities are being organised for the coming months with the JTC section (10 to 13 years) starting work on their map and compass badge. On Saturday November the 10 th some members will be attending the National Memorial Arboretum at Alrewas in Staffordshire to participate in the Brigades annual memorial service. For more information please contact Alan on 01291689901 / 07824365970 “WALKERS ARE WELCOME” INITIATIVE Representatives from Tintern Village have held a meeting with a representative from an organisation called “Walkers are Welcome” The general feeling was that it would be a good idea for Tintern to be a “Walkers are Welcome” village, the advantages of which include the strengthening of our existing walking reputation bringing benefits to the local economy, raising the profile of local paths and facilities for walkers and the opportunity to network with other “Walkers are Welcome” towns and villages. This initiative is supported by Monmouthshire County Council and Tintern Community Council. We would have to meet certain criteria before being accepted but even before we reach this stage we have to demonstrate we have sufficient support for an application to join and in our case this means obtaining a minimum of 50 signatures. A signature form is being distributed throughout the village so if you wish to support the initiative please look out for it (should be in most of the local pubs).
