Seven senior art majors will exhibit their work in the Annual Senior Exhibition at The Gallery
at New England College through May 12, 2012. Works including oil painting, photography,
printmaking, sculpture, graphic design, and web design by New England College
students hailing from New Hampshire, Massachusetts, North Carolina, and Connecticut
will be on display. The public is invited to a reception to meet the student artists on Friday,
May 11 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. The Gallery will be open on Saturday, May 12 from 12:00
to 2:00 p.m. for this exhibit.
“The senior exhibition is the capstone project for New England College art majors,” says
Gallery Director Darryl Furtkamp. Students do more than produce work to exhibit at the
end of the semester. They learn how to hang and display artworks and curate an exhibit.
“Every student has a specific job in relation to the exhibit—from designing the exhibit
poster and announcement, to photographing
the exhibit for documentation,
to installation layout. They learn everything
there is to know about how an art
gallery works,” continued Furtkamp.
Pictured above: Christine Szelog-Tilley, untitled archival
inkjet print, 13”x9”
Students from New Hampshire include:
Christine szelog-Tilley, Henniker, NH,
photography. Ms. Szelog-Tilley finds her
work is most successful when it results
from creating connections to the people
around her. “Though the communication
is inaudible, there is a dialog between
the camera and the subject,” says Szelog-
Tilley of her work.
Jennifer by and devon Mozdierz from
Weare, NH, showcase graphic design and oil painting. Jennifer By combines the traditional
elements of commercial graphic design and typography with the more artist creative process
May 2012
of digital art in her digital paper posters.
Oil paintings on wooden panels by Devon
Mozdierz depict the surreal elements of
nature. “Humans have a unique way of
imprinting the earth through creation. Old
temples, cave paintings, rock pilings. These
are proof of our past existence, and it is
in their durability that the surreal evolves
because we cannot explain them. My work
evokes this same suggestive mystery,” says
Mozdierz.
Alyssa Fogarty from Deering, NH,
exhibits digital archival prints that are,
by design, clean
and concise. “I use
uncomplicated compositions
to convey a
brand,” says Fogarty
of her work.
Morgan Whitney
from West Hartford,
CT, says of her oil
paintings on wooden
panels, “I find inspiration
in teh organic
beauty of a thirsty,
broken desert floor
and the knife-edge of
a tall peak.”
NEC Student Rocks the Board
Abigale Jones
works the board at
the New England
College radio
station with the
same confidence
as someone who’s
been doing it a
long time. That
confidence is even
more apparent
as she describes some of the ambitious plans to integrate the
station into the life of the College. Abigale talks about the live
broadcast at Spring Weekend and the possibility of covering
home and away athletic events in the future. She is working
with Native American musician Joseph Fire Crow to interview
him in the fall, and she anticipates additional on-air conversations
much like the ones that her colleague Justin McDougall
was working on with singer, rapper, and producer Jeremih and
fellow student Ben Hartford did with gubernatorial candidate
Ovide Lamontagne. As far as she is concerned, the possibilities
are endless.
One of the reasons Abigale came to New England College was
a chance to host her own show, and with just three semesters
left, she is determined to get as much experience in front of the
microphone as she possibly can. Her Monday/Wednesday show
“Tunes in the Afternoon,” from 1:00-2:00 p.m., is an eclectic
mix of music that demonstrates her knowledge in a variety of
musical genres. “I’ve trained on a professional quality board here
at NEC,” she observes. “And that will allow me to work in just
about any studio.”
Next on her to-do list is attending the Connecticut Broadcasters
Association annual dinner in May. From a field of 170 applicants,
Abigale was one of just three individuals selected to receive
a $5,000 scholarship from the organization. A sophomore
majoring in Communications from Winsted, Connecticut,
Abigale will speak at the dinner and play a live radio show and
a video that describe her experience at the radio station and at
New England College. “I’m taking this experience at the radio
station as seriously as any major at the College,” she explains.
Abigale’s professional goal is to go into broadcasting and she
will be pursuing an internship at one of New Hampshire’s radio
stations next semester. “I like current issues and I’d like to open
up discussions with others who feel strongly about the issues.”
WNEC’s rich 40-year history is filled with a variety of musical and
educational programming. In keeping with our mission, WNEC
continues to provide an eclectic mix for our world-wide audience.
megan Lyman named miss New Hampshire 2012
Megan Lyman set her sights on the Miss New Hampshire
title some time ago, and for the past two years
she has placed first runner up in the competition. But
at Saturday night’s contest for Miss New Hampshire
2012, Megan’s perseverance paid off and she took the
title and the crown in front of a sold-out audience
at the Stockbridge Theatre at Pinkerton Academy in
Derry.
The title puts Megan in the running for the 2013 Miss
America contest to be held in Las Vegas in January. If
she is successful, she will be the first person from New
Hampshire to earn the title.
All contestants in the Miss New Hampshire program
participate in community service and Megan has demonstrated her commitment
through a variety of projects including some at New England College.
As a member of CivicCorps she was actively involved in College Convention
2012 and introduced program presenters, answered questions for participants,
checked in members of the international media, and shared her observations
with reporters. She joined the team from NEC that traveled to Nicaragua in
January to work with students in the Orphanage Outreach program and is
already considering a similar program in the Dominican Republic next year.
Megan is a junior at New England College and is pursuing a double major in
elementary and special education.
Meredith Bird-Miller, Associate Professor of Education, will present a workshop at
the Sydney International Storytelling Conference in June. Hosted by the Australian
Storytelling Guild, the theme of
the conference is “Weaving Stories
Together.” Meredith’s presentation is
focused on “Captivating Climate: Exploring
Cross-Curricular Connections
Through Geomythology.”
Volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, and
brand new land masses rising out
of the oceans, are just some of the
geological events that have been
woven into multicultural myths and
shared over many generations. The
study of these ancient stories and
their contribution to scientific inquiry
is known as geomythology. Scientists have determined that comparing information
found in mythology with studies of the earth’s record, can confirm their knowledge of
the history of our planet and offer additional insight into multicultural perspectives
and understanding. Meredith will incorporate fossils, storytelling, group poetry, maps,
graphs, and drawing into this interactive workshop.
Meredith is a frequent presenter at conferences and workshops including the New
Hampshire Science Teachers Association, the New England Gifted and Talented
Educators Conference, the New England Environmental Educators Alliance, and the
League for the Advancement of New England Storytelling. She is the founder and an
organizer of the annual Tellabration program at New England College.
Through her work as a doctoral candidate at Antioch New England Graduate School
in Keene, New Hampshire, Meredith is studying storytelling as a bridge between
multicultural studies, environmental and earth sciences, and literacy education. She is
currently working on a collaborative research project with classrooms in New Zealand
and New Hampshire. Prior to the conference in June, she will travel to New Zealand
to continue her doctoral research.
Meredith will teach a course on geomythology and digital storytelling in education
during the 2013 spring semester. She and Bryan Partridge, Associate Professor of
Writing, will offer a May term course that incorporates a trip to New Zealand. This
course will provide students with an opportunity to earn a one-week internship at the
Waitomo Caves School, participate in trips to museums, blackwater rafting recreational
organizations, and/or local farms, and to explore the North Island.
