Attendance Policy<br />

The county 4-H <strong>at</strong>tendance policy st<strong>at</strong>es th<strong>at</strong> 4-H members<br />

must <strong>at</strong>tend 50% <strong>of</strong> their club’s scheduled meetings<br />

after joining to be eligible to take part in 4-H exhibitions,<br />

receive 4-H premiums, or receive other awards and<br />

recognition. If you are unable to <strong>at</strong>tend a 4-H meeting for<br />

events such as school activities, illness, or circumstances<br />

beyond your control and wish to be excused, you must let<br />

your leader know before your meeting.<br />

4-H & Livestock News<br />

BEEF<br />

Steers: Calved on or after <strong>Jan</strong>uary 1, 2012 and owned<br />

& personally cared for by exhibitor since February 1,<br />

2013.<br />

Heifers: Age requirement is from September 1, 2011<br />

to March 31, 2013 and owned and personally cared for<br />

by exhibitor since June 1, 2013.<br />

Performance Cows: Cows must be born before September<br />

1, 2011 and owned and personally cared by exhibitor<br />

since <strong>Jan</strong>uary 1, 2013.<br />

SWINE<br />

Barrows: Regular Barrows—Farrowed on or after<br />

<strong>Jan</strong>uary 15, 2013 and must be the property <strong>of</strong> the exhibitor<br />

by June 1, 2013. No weighing and t<strong>at</strong>tooing required<br />

but must submit ear notches when making a entry<br />

for ISF.<br />

Premiere Barrows: Farrowed on or after February 10,<br />

2013 and must have been the property <strong>of</strong> the exhibitor<br />

by June 1, 2013. T<strong>at</strong>tooed within 35 days <strong>of</strong> birth and<br />

not weigh more than 1.0 lbs/day.<br />

Gilts: Age requirement is farrowed on or after <strong>Jan</strong>uary<br />

1, 2013 and owned by exhibitor since June 1, 2013.<br />

SHEEP<br />

Wethers: Both Premiere & Live Show Wethers-<br />

Lambed on or after <strong>Jan</strong>uary 1, 2013. Ownership D<strong>at</strong>e –<br />

May 15, 2013.<br />

Ewes & Rams: Age requirement for yearling ewes is<br />

from <strong>Jan</strong>uary 1, 2012 to August 31, 2012. Age requirement<br />

for ewe lambs is after September 1, 2012. Age<br />

requirement for ram lambs is after <strong>Jan</strong>uary 1, 2013.<br />

Owned and personally cared for by exhibitor since June<br />

25, 2013.<br />

MEAT GOATS<br />

All me<strong>at</strong> go<strong>at</strong>s are to be owned by exhibitor only by<br />

May 15, 2013 Ownership d<strong>at</strong>es for Kids & Yearlings<br />

not in milk – May 15, 2013.<br />

Wethers: Born on or after October 1, 2012.<br />

HORSE & PONY & CAMELIDS<br />

May 1: Must have on file in <strong>Extension</strong> Office copies<br />

<strong>of</strong> ownership and/or lease papers for all animals th<strong>at</strong><br />

the member plans to exhibit <strong>at</strong> the county or ISF Junior<br />

Horse Show.<br />

DOGS<br />

Dogs must be owned or leased by May 1, 2013.<br />

Beef Weigh-In<br />

Beef Weigh-Ins have been scheduled for S<strong>at</strong>urday,<br />

February 2 <strong>at</strong> the Greene County Fairgrounds<br />

and February 9 <strong>at</strong> the Morgan<br />

County fairgrounds from 9-10 a.m. Beef exhibitors<br />

can weigh in <strong>at</strong> either one <strong>of</strong> these loc<strong>at</strong>ions.<br />

This is for any 4-H member who plans to enter the<br />

county r<strong>at</strong>e <strong>of</strong> gain contest or show a steer <strong>at</strong> the <strong>Illinois</strong><br />

St<strong>at</strong>e Fair. You may weigh and nomin<strong>at</strong>e ten<br />

steers for the St<strong>at</strong>e Fair. February 16 has been set as<br />

an altern<strong>at</strong>e d<strong>at</strong>e. Deadline to register for weigh-in<br />

is <strong>Jan</strong>uary 25.<br />

Swine Premiere<br />

All 4-H members who are interested in competing in<br />

the county or St<strong>at</strong>e Fair premiere contest, must have<br />

their barrows weighed and t<strong>at</strong>tooed. For the county<br />

premiere contest, pigs must be farrowed on or after<br />

<strong>Jan</strong>uary 15. St<strong>at</strong>e Fair premiere competition pigs<br />

must be farrowed on or after February 10. All animals<br />

must be less than 35 days <strong>of</strong> age and weigh less<br />

than 35 lbs. when t<strong>at</strong>tooed. All animals must be t<strong>at</strong>tooed<br />

by April 15. You must call the <strong>of</strong>fice to prearrange<br />

a d<strong>at</strong>e and time to t<strong>at</strong>too your barrows.<br />

Pork Quality Assurance<br />

All 4-H members who exhibit swine must be PQA<br />

certified. 4-H members who send their animal to the<br />

market <strong>at</strong> the county level must have the certific<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

in their name or a member <strong>of</strong> the family’s name. All<br />

4-H members who exhibit barrows <strong>at</strong> the <strong>Illinois</strong><br />

St<strong>at</strong>e Fair must have the certific<strong>at</strong>ion in the name <strong>of</strong><br />

the exhibitor. Most youth PQA certific<strong>at</strong>ions expire<br />

after one year but check your certific<strong>at</strong>ion to see<br />

when it expires. A PQA certific<strong>at</strong>ion class will be<br />

held in April and May. D<strong>at</strong>e and time will be in next<br />

month’s clover. This certific<strong>at</strong>ion is for youth only.<br />

Adults need to be certified by an approved instructor.<br />

Quality Assurance and Ethics<br />

QAEC website is open for all animal exhibitors<br />

needing to complete certific<strong>at</strong>ion. All 4-H members<br />

who plan to exhibit poultry, dairy, beef,<br />

swine, horses, me<strong>at</strong> go<strong>at</strong>s or sheep <strong>at</strong> the fairs<br />

must complete the certific<strong>at</strong>ion process on-line<br />

once to exhibit.<br />

4-H Premier LCP Award<br />

The 4-H Premier LCP Award is sponsored by the<br />

<strong>Illinois</strong> Farm Bureau and Affili<strong>at</strong>e Companies for 4-<br />

H members age 17 and above by December 1, 2012.<br />

LCP stands for Leadership, Citizenship, and Pr<strong>of</strong>essionalism.<br />

This two-tier award program involves an<br />

intense leadership development conference and<br />

award plaques. Applic<strong>at</strong>ions can be obtained from<br />

the <strong>Extension</strong> Office website or this link http://<br />

web.extension.illinois.edu/st<strong>at</strong>e4h/members/<br />

recognition_awards.cfm. Applic<strong>at</strong>ions must be in the<br />

<strong>Extension</strong> Office no l<strong>at</strong>er than Wednesday, <strong>Jan</strong>uary<br />

2, 2013.<br />

Montadale Sheep Essay Contest<br />

The <strong>Illinois</strong> Montadale Sheep Breeders Associ<strong>at</strong>ion is<br />

sponsoring its 2nd annual essay contest and will be<br />

awarding a Montadale ewe lamb to the winner. The<br />

contest is open to <strong>Illinois</strong> 4-H or FFA members under<br />

the age <strong>of</strong> 18 and not currently raising Montadale<br />

sheep. The lamb will be presented to the essay winner<br />

<strong>at</strong> the annual <strong>Illinois</strong> Montadale Breeders picnic held<br />

in June. The winning essay will also be published in<br />

the spring edition <strong>of</strong> the 2013 "Montadale Momentum"<br />

magazine.<br />

The Essay should describe why the contestant would<br />

like a Montadale ewe lamb, future plans for the lamb,<br />

and how they will care for it. Essays will be judged on<br />

their content and age appropri<strong>at</strong>eness. The winner will<br />

be expected to enroll in sheep as a 4-H project and exhibit<br />

the lamb <strong>at</strong> the 2013 <strong>Illinois</strong> St<strong>at</strong>e Fair Jr show.<br />

Adult Volunteers interested in Shooting<br />

Sports in Greene and Calhoun Counties<br />

Are you interested in shooting sports? Are you 21<br />

years <strong>of</strong> age or older? Do you have the desire and<br />

knowledge to develop in youth the skill and<br />

knowledge to enhance their abilities in shooting<br />

sports and as gre<strong>at</strong> citizens? If you can answer yes to<br />

all three <strong>of</strong> the above questions then 4-H <strong>of</strong> Greene<br />

county and Calhoun need you. The 4-H programs in<br />

Greene and Calhoun county are looking for adults<br />

th<strong>at</strong> qualify and are willing to become coordin<strong>at</strong>ors<br />

and instructors in Shooting Sports. The N<strong>at</strong>ional 4-H<br />

Shooting Sports requires each county to have a coordin<strong>at</strong>or<br />

and <strong>at</strong> least one instructor before a 4-H program<br />

in the county can <strong>of</strong>fer Shooting Sports as a<br />

c<strong>at</strong>egory. Shooting Sports encompass archery, rifle<br />

and shotgun. The instructors would provide the leadership<br />

to the youth while the coordin<strong>at</strong>or is required<br />

to supervise the entire shooting sports program and<br />

be present when any competitions or meetings are<br />

held. A coordin<strong>at</strong>or and instructor training will be<br />

held May 3-5, 2013 <strong>at</strong> the 4-H Memorial Camp in<br />

Monticello, <strong>Illinois</strong>. If you are interested in <strong>at</strong>tending<br />
