Attendance Policy
The county 4-H attendance policy states that 4-H members
must attend 50% of their club’s scheduled meetings
after joining to be eligible to take part in 4-H exhibitions,
receive 4-H premiums, or receive other awards and
recognition. If you are unable to attend a 4-H meeting for
events such as school activities, illness, or circumstances
beyond your control and wish to be excused, you must let
your leader know before your meeting.

Birth and Ownership Dates for
IL State Fair Jr Show
4-H & Livestock News
BEEF
Steers: Calved on or after January 1, 2012 and owned
& personally cared for by exhibitor since February 1,
2013.
Heifers: Age requirement is from September 1, 2011
to March 31, 2013 and owned and personally cared for
by exhibitor since June 1, 2013.
Performance Cows: Cows must be born before September
1, 2011 and owned and personally cared by exhibitor
since January 1, 2013.
SWINE
Barrows: Regular Barrows—Farrowed on or after
January 15, 2013 and must be the property of the exhibitor
by June 1, 2013. No weighing and tattooing required
but must submit ear notches when making a entry
for ISF.
Premiere Barrows: Farrowed on or after February 10,
2013 and must have been the property of the exhibitor
by June 1, 2013. Tattooed within 35 days of birth and
not weigh more than 1.0 lbs/day.
Gilts: Age requirement is farrowed on or after January
1, 2013 and owned by exhibitor since June 1, 2013.
SHEEP
Wethers: Both Premiere & Live Show Wethers-
Lambed on or after January 1, 2013. Ownership Date –
May 15, 2013.
Ewes & Rams: Age requirement for yearling ewes is
from January 1, 2012 to August 31, 2012. Age requirement
for ewe lambs is after September 1, 2012. Age
requirement for ram lambs is after January 1, 2013.
Owned and personally cared for by exhibitor since June
25, 2013.
MEAT GOATS
All meat goats are to be owned by exhibitor only by
May 15, 2013 Ownership dates for Kids & Yearlings
not in milk – May 15, 2013.
Wethers: Born on or after October 1, 2012.
HORSE & PONY & CAMELIDS
May 1: Must have on file in Extension Office copies
of ownership and/or lease papers for all animals that
the member plans to exhibit at the county or ISF Junior
Horse Show.
DOGS
Dogs must be owned or leased by May 1, 2013.

Beef Weigh-In
Beef Weigh-Ins have been scheduled for Saturday,
February 2 at the Greene County Fairgrounds
and February 9 at the Morgan
County fairgrounds from 9-10 a.m. Beef exhibitors
can weigh in at either one of these locations.
This is for any 4-H member who plans to enter the
county rate of gain contest or show a steer at the Illinois
State Fair. You may weigh and nominate ten
steers for the State Fair. February 16 has been set as
an alternate date. Deadline to register for weigh-in
is January 25.
Swine Premiere
All 4-H members who are interested in competing in
the county or State Fair premiere contest, must have
their barrows weighed and tattooed. For the county
premiere contest, pigs must be farrowed on or after
January 15. State Fair premiere competition pigs
must be farrowed on or after February 10. All animals
must be less than 35 days of age and weigh less
than 35 lbs. when tattooed. All animals must be tattooed
by April 15. You must call the office to prearrange
a date and time to tattoo your barrows.
Pork Quality Assurance
All 4-H members who exhibit swine must be PQA
certified. 4-H members who send their animal to the
market at the county level must have the certification
in their name or a member of the family’s name. All
4-H members who exhibit barrows at the Illinois
State Fair must have the certification in the name of
the exhibitor. Most youth PQA certifications expire
after one year but check your certification to see
when it expires. A PQA certification class will be
held in April and May. Date and time will be in next
month’s clover. This certification is for youth only.
Adults need to be certified by an approved instructor.

IMPORTANT!!!!!
Quality Assurance and Ethics
QAEC website is open for all animal exhibitors
needing to complete certification. All 4-H members
who plan to exhibit poultry, dairy, beef,
swine, horses, meat goats or sheep at the fairs
must complete the certification process on-line
once to exhibit.

Junior Leadership Conference
Feb. 23-24, 2013 in Champaign-
Urbana for junior high 4-H members.
Online registration must be completed by January
28, 2013. The registration fee is $135 for all individuals.

4-H Premier LCP Award
The 4-H Premier LCP Award is sponsored by the
Illinois Farm Bureau and Affiliate Companies for 4-
H members age 17 and above by December 1, 2012.
LCP stands for Leadership, Citizenship, and Professionalism.
This two-tier award program involves an
intense leadership development conference and
award plaques. Applications can be obtained from
the Extension Office website or this link http://
web.extension.illinois.edu/state4h/members/
recognition_awards.cfm. Applications must be in the
Extension Office no later than Wednesday, January
2, 2013.
Montadale Sheep Essay Contest
The Illinois Montadale Sheep Breeders Association is
sponsoring its 2nd annual essay contest and will be
awarding a Montadale ewe lamb to the winner. The
contest is open to Illinois 4-H or FFA members under
the age of 18 and not currently raising Montadale
sheep. The lamb will be presented to the essay winner
at the annual Illinois Montadale Breeders picnic held
in June. The winning essay will also be published in
the spring edition of the 2013 "Montadale Momentum"
magazine.
The Essay should describe why the contestant would
like a Montadale ewe lamb, future plans for the lamb,
and how they will care for it. Essays will be judged on
their content and age appropriateness. The winner will
be expected to enroll in sheep as a 4-H project and exhibit
the lamb at the 2013 Illinois State Fair Jr show.

New Holland, IL 62671 by February 1, 2013. Please
include the entrants name, address, phone number, age
and 4-H club or FFA chapter name.

Wanted:
Adult Volunteers interested in Shooting
Sports in Greene and Calhoun Counties
Are you interested in shooting sports? Are you 21
years of age or older? Do you have the desire and
knowledge to develop in youth the skill and
knowledge to enhance their abilities in shooting
sports and as great citizens? If you can answer yes to
all three of the above questions then 4-H of Greene
county and Calhoun need you. The 4-H programs in
Greene and Calhoun county are looking for adults
that qualify and are willing to become coordinators
and instructors in Shooting Sports. The National 4-H
Shooting Sports requires each county to have a coordinator
and at least one instructor before a 4-H program
in the county can offer Shooting Sports as a
category. Shooting Sports encompass archery, rifle
and shotgun. The instructors would provide the leadership
to the youth while the coordinator is required
to supervise the entire shooting sports program and
be present when any competitions or meetings are
held. A coordinator and instructor training will be
held May 3-5, 2013 at the 4-H Memorial Camp in
Monticello, Illinois. If you are interested in attending
