Ruth, daughter of Bessie
and Louis Stein, was born
and raised in Northern
New Jersey. Philanthropy
is in her blood; she was
brought up in a Zionist
home and her family
made tzedakah a part of
their life. After attending
NYU she married Wally
Leventhal. When they
moved to Philadelphia in
1956 it was only natural
that she became involved in
charitable organizations.
The first organization she joined was Hadassah where she was a second
generation member. Over the years she took on leadership positions
and served as vice president of the Philadelphia Chapter. Soon after,
she joined the National Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, served on their
board and chaired many of their events. Her involvement didn’t stop
there. She served as Chair of the Women’s Division of Israel Bonds
and as Chair of the American Cancer Society Campaign.
Ruth is the mother of three: Susan & husband Don Wenger, Ira & wife
Beth, and Margie & husband Walter Ferst. She is the grandmother of
nine and great-grandmother to two adorable little boys. Her daughters
and five granddaughters reflect the true meaning of L’dor Vador - from
generation to generation. They are all Life Members of Hadassah,
making her granddaughters fourth-generation members.
Ruth was widowed and later married Bennett Nathanson. She not only
gained a wonderful husband but also two children, their spouses and
four granddaughters, who are all Life Members.
Bennett (a second generation Hadassah Associate) and Ruth now divide
their time among Philadelphia, Boca Raton, and Lenox, MA and are
enjoying their time as senior citizens being involved in organizational
work, attending classes, playing bridge, traveling (especially to Israel),
and enjoying their family and friends.
