MESSAGE FROM TSO PRESIDENT<br />

Serving on the Board of the T<strong>acom</strong>a <strong>Symphony</strong> <strong>Orchestra</strong><br />
is one of the most exciting and rewarding experiences of<br />
my life. It is both a privilege and a responsibility. The<br />
20-plus members of the TSO Board are drawn from<br />
diverse walks of life, but we all share several things in<br />
common: a dedication to the community we live in, and<br />
a passion for working to provide our community with<br />
the tremendous resource of a vital, artistically excellent<br />
symphony orchestra.<br />
The past season was one of fresh beginnings. We knew that it was time to<br />
re-examine many aspects of our operation, from programming to branding<br />
to fund raising. We did that, and although we’re not done yet, we are<br />
pleased with the results so far. After perusing the 2007-2008 Annual<br />
Report, we hope you will be too.<br />
On behalf of the Board, musicians and staff of the T<strong>acom</strong>a <strong>Symphony</strong><br />
<strong>Orchestra</strong>, I would like to thank you for your support of this organization.<br />
Michael Tilson Thomas, conductor of the San Francisco <strong>Symphony</strong>, once<br />
commented that “great music only happens when a great many people want<br />
it to happen.” Thank you for being one of those people.
2007-2008 YEAR IN REVIEW<br />
General Overview<br />
2007-2008 was a momentous year for your T<strong>acom</strong>a <strong>Symphony</strong> <strong>Orchestra</strong>. Artistic<br />
highlights included performances of such<br />
monumental works as Brahms’s <strong>Symphony</strong> No. 1 and<br />
Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. Maestro<br />
Felder and the <strong>Orchestra</strong> collaborated with<br />
acclaimed Israeli cellist Amit Peled in Elgar’s<br />
beautiful Cello Concerto; with local pianist Tanya<br />
Stambuk on Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 21; and<br />
with local violinist Maria Sampen in the Tchaikovsky<br />
Violin Concerto. An undoubted highlight on the<br />
Pops season was January’s Tribute to Benny<br />
Goodman with the Dave Bennett Septet.<br />
Dr. Richard Bowe assumed leadership as President of<br />
the Board of Directors at the start of the new fiscal<br />
year. Following the retiring of the TSO’s long-term<br />
debt in the spring of 2007, the organization created a<br />
new strategic plan, completed an extensive marketing<br />
assessment, and conducted a national search that<br />
resulted in the hiring of Andrew Buelow as Executive<br />
Director. Mr. Buelow joined the organization in<br />
November, just prior to the organization’s Holiday<br />
concerts. With new leadership in place, the<br />
administration implemented new artistic, marketing,<br />
development, and cost-saving initiatives, resulting in a<br />
balanced budget for the 2007-2008 Season.<br />
Audience Development<br />
The TSO engaged the services of Hosfeld & Associates<br />
to conduct an audit of its Marketing program. The<br />
study made the following recommendations:<br />
• Sharpen the organization’s “brand” and play to its<br />
strengths.<br />
• Improve the graphic content of the TSO’s advertising<br />
and promotional collateral.<br />
• Increase the advertising budget and focus in on media<br />
that has proven most effective: the daily newspaper<br />
and classical radio.<br />
• Create a comprehensive, “viral” audience development program to expand the<br />
audience by word-of-mouth<br />
The Hosfeld Report was not completed in time to impact the 2007-2008<br />
subscription campaign, but the organization began implementing its<br />
recommendations during the single ticket campaign. As a result of these measures,<br />
by season’s end single ticket sales were up 9% over the previous season.
Fund Development<br />
Recognizing that contributed revenue accounts for 70% of the TSO’s budget, the<br />
Board initiated new fund raising programs. Board members stepped up to the plate,<br />
nearly doubling their contributions over the previous season. In March, an anonymous<br />
donor made a matching challenge gift of $25,000. With the resulting leverage,<br />
the TSO not only matched but more than doubled the funds. Patrons responded<br />
generously, including nearly 150 new donors. Under the banner of “Every Chair<br />
Sponsored,” the Board solicited new sponsors of previously unassigned musician<br />
chairs; by the end of the campaign, only eight chairs remained. A new Celebrity<br />
Chefs Showcase event was held at Clover Park Technical College in May, and introduced<br />
still more new supporters to the TSO family. Overall, gifts from individuals<br />
increased 47% over the previous season.
