typing the original typescript. My father's handwriting was difficult to read, and the account was written in
pencil on both sides of thin airmail paper. Page numbers in the body of the text refer to the pages of the original
account.
In compiling the index, I have referred to "A Nominal Roll of the Volunteers", compiled by John Brown. This
excellent reference source has clarified many of the names. I have included in the index additional information
taken from the Roll, in the belief this will be helpful to readers. A question-mark used in square brackets
indicates any uncertainty about identify, although context points to these being the people mentioned in the text.
