Martin Luther Church, as a congregation, welcomes and
celebrates the richness and diversity of all God’s people,
regardless of where they’ve come from or where they are in
Therefore, we follow the teaching of 2 Corinthians 5:18: “All
this is from God who reconciled us through Jesus Christ and
gave us the ministry of reconciliation.”
We believe that the good news of Jesus Christ is to be
shared by all people without regard to age, race, gender
PASTOR’S PEN
“One of his disciples said to him, ‘Lord, teach us to pray.’” -Luke 11:1
I was reading a passage from Jeremiah as part of my daily devotional this week when I found
a verse that stopped me in my tracks.
(Quick aside: I recently started using reading plans from YouVersion for my devotions.
There are many plans to choose from, you can read them online or on a smart phone, and
you can have reminders emailed daily. I love them! Find them at youversion.com. Okay,
back to Jeremiah.)
In the passage I was reading, a group of people comes to the prophet Jeremiah and asks him
to pray to God about a question they have. Jeremiah does, and then verse 42:7 describes
what happens next: “Ten days later the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah” (emphasis mine).
Ten days! Jeremiah is one of the greatest prophets Israel ever had and he prayed about a
question of deep importance for the future of God’s people and God took ten days to
respond!
I found this passage strangely comforting. Prayer is something I admit I don’t fully understand.
Even though I practice it daily and believe it’s a vital part of a relationship with God,
I don’t feel like I’m very good at it. Prayer is not one of my spiritual gifts. (Really. I’ve done
several spiritual gifts inventories and prayer usually comes in near the bottom for me.) I
question whether prayer is more about changing God’s mind or changing mine. I struggle
to feel God’s presence when I pray and I wonder how to know when a prayer has been
heard or answered.
I think that’s why I found comfort in the Jeremiah passage. If Jeremiah didn’t get an answer
for ten days on an important and urgent matter, then maybe I should change my expectations
when I approach prayer. Perhaps I need to learn more about how and when God
responds and about how I listen. Perhaps my struggles with prayer are just a natural part
of a growing and changing relationship with God.
As we begin the season of Lent this month, a season that is devoted to prayer and turning toward
God, I’m planning on making part of my Lenten discipline to ask God to help me learn
more about prayer and listening carefully for God’s lessons. Doing so helps me to work on
two of our 5 Cornerstones, Growing in Worship and Daily Acts of Faith.
I invite you to join me in this journey by thinking of a Cornerstone you’d like to grow in and
finding a way to focus on that during Lent. (The other Cornerstones are Engage the Bible,
Build Loving Relationships, and Give in Service.) How would you like to grow? Where do you
feel called to be strengthened or made new? If there’s a way I can help in such a discipline,
I’d be happy to help. May God bless our journey and may we all find ourselves made new at
Easter.
Council This & That: “God’s Work-Our Hands”
Nothing lasts forever! At least nothing mechanical, no matter what those sales
people tell you. That’s the concern we are running into with the furnace servicing the
Fellowship Hall area. The “big green monster” is on its last legs after serving Martin
Luther for almost 40 years. Luckily, furnaces have become much more energy efficient,
smaller, and more economical. Estimates are coming in under $20,000 for two smaller,
more efficient furnaces and two new air conditioning units. Now the problem is how we
pay for the new equipment. That’s one of the reasons for the new “Future Capital
Expense” line on your 2013 offering envelope.
We are currently looking at various financing options and will keep you informed
on the progress of the financing and the furnace replacement. In the meantime, we
encourage you to contribute to the furnace fund through the “Future Capital Expense”
fund.
If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to call me.
Council Treasurer
Brain Teaser: Can you name the 5 Cornerstones?
Lent
The season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, which falls this year on
February 13. Lent is a season of repentance and focusing on the cross. It is a solemn time as
we remember what we are moving toward (Jesus' crucifixion) and take time to remind
ourselves that our sin and God's love are what take us there. The forty days of Lent are meant
to be symbolic of the forty days that Jesus spent in the wilderness at the beginning of his
ministry (look for that story to show up early in Lent), but can also remind us of the forty
years the Hebrews spent in the wilderness or the forty days Noah waited for the end of the
flood. (Trivia: the forty days of Lent do not include Sundays. Sundays are still “little Easters”
and are meant for celebration, albeit in a limited way, even in the midst of Lent's solemnity.)
There are many traditions attached to the season of Lent. One of these is the Lenten
discipline, the idea of giving something up for the season of Lent, such as chocolate or
alcohol. This is often misunderstood as “a Catholic thing,” but any Christian may practice it
and many Lutherans do. The idea behind the discipline is to give up something we enjoy to
simulate the hunger Jesus experienced in the wilderness, but also to remove those things we
may be tempted to treat as gods in our lives. If you've never practiced the discipline, you
may want to consider it this year. It can be a powerful way to practice Lent beyond Sunday.
Instead of (or in addition to) giving something up, you may also want to add something, such
as time with loved ones or time praying, as part of a Lenten discipline.
Another Lenten tradition is to remove the words “Alleluia” and “Hallelujah” from worship.
These joyous words (which both mean “Let us praise the LORD”) will not appear in any song
or spoken part of worship until Easter, when they will return in abundance!
May God bless your Lenten journey and may it be a time rich in the presence and wisdom of
God!
Spotlight Ministry of the Month for February: Serenity Inns
At any given time in the City of Milwaukee, statistics show there
are 1,000 homeless men and 80% of them wrestle with an addiction.
But there's a place providing a roof and treatment in Milwaukee
called Serenity Inns. Men battling drug or alcohol addiction live at
Serenity Inns and get treatment for seven months.
"It's needed because homes are being broken and so are families.
There is joblessness and we need more places like this,"
said Serenity Inns executive director Ellen Blathers.
Each year, 75 men are referred there yearly but about 32 percent
make it through the program. It's because Blathers says there is
a zero tolerance policy and the men have regimented study time,
therapy, and spiritual learning.
"That spiritual component helps them reconnect with God and
realize their importance and worth in the community and family as
a whole," said Blathers.
It worked for Robert Love. He came to Serenity Inns after being
released from the penitentiary. He says he needed a place to stay
and admits that he need treatment.
"I knew once I got back into the city if I got on the street I was going
to pick up right where I left off-selling drugs/using and
I didn't want that," said Love.
He was reluctant at first but says the hard edge nature
of the program kept him in line and straightened him out.
"Six or seven months is enough time for you to really take a good
look at yourself and if you're really serious about changing your life
you have all the tools you need to do it," said Love.
Now, he's an innkeeper on the weekend at Serenity Inns,
encouraging and connecting with men whose shoes he used to be in.
"Sometimes a guy just wants someone to
talk to, to get something off their chest and
that makes you feel good by talking to them
and sharing with them what you went
through and encouraging them that they
can make it," said Love.
Dollar a Day During Lent for Poverty
Outreach for Hope (www.outreachforhope.org) is a ministry of the Greater Milwaukee
Synod (our regional body) that focuses on supporting churches and ministries that
work with the poor in Milwaukee and other local cities. Every year they put out a
challenge to congregations during Lent for families to put aside a Dollar a Day to
“remember the poor.” And how those dollars can grow! If every family at MLC
participated, we’d be able to send over $2000 to OFH at Easter. Think of creative ways
to do this as a family and make it Cross+Generational! Will you join Pastor Ari’s family
is setting aside a Dollar a Day?
Furnace Matching Grant
When is a dollar worth two dollars? When it's matched! The furnace for our
fellowship hall, kitchen, and connected hallways is in need of replacement in the
near future. One of our members has offered $2000 toward the project and
challenged the rest of the congregation can match the gift. $4000 would go a long
way toward the estimated total of $15-20 thousand. To give to the project use one
of the special offering envelopes available on the welcome table outside the
sanctuary, mark it as “Furnace Challenge,” and turn it in by the end of February.
Let's meet the challenge!
is an imaginative homage to Hadley Richardson Hemingway, whose quiet support
helped her young husband become a writer, and it gives readers a chance
Meet some of MLC’s newest members!
I want to begin by thanking you for making the Westfall family feel so welcome. I am
thankful that we visited Martin Luther Church first. What do I say about our family that
may of be any interest to someone else? We have 4 beautiful kids. Cayla 19, Steven Jr. 15,
Keone 9, Kei 4. Cayla and Steven Jr. stayed in Anchorage, Alaska. Steven Sr., Seth, Keone
and Kei moved here from Anchorage in the summer of 2012. We look forward to raising
Keone and Kei in the Wauwatosa area. We are a bowling family with all our kids bowling,
as well. Seth is a 2nd-grade teacher at Jefferson Elementary. School, and Steven is an
independent agent for Aflac. Thanks so much, Steven and Seth Westfall
Praise to you, O Lord, and thank you for your love and blessings. I am so
happy to have known you all my life. I was baptized a Methodist and
celebrated my Confirmation at the First United Methodist Church in West
Allis. During my lifetime I've also attended a number of other churches: Mt.
Olive Lutheran Church where my son was baptized and confirmed, Elmbrook
Church where I attended for a number of years, and later I became of member
of Faith Presbyterian Church in Franklin, where I was an active committee
member and served on the board. After returning to my old neighborhood, I
was reunited with my dear friend from high school - Kevin Orndoff - and we
started attending his family's church, Martin Luther. Last spring the support
of our church friends meant so much when Kevin was diagonosed with
cancer and began chemo treatments. On August 21, Kevin and I celebrated
our Commitment Ceremony here at Martin Luther and I decided to join!
Truly, I feel our Lord's presence within Martin Luther and have already made
some wonderful Christian friends. Thank you all for such a warm welcome.
Lois Daute
Chuck adds: Lois volunteered to help put MLC’s annual report together and was of
invaluable assistance. She also supervises the day-to-day care of her 92-year-old
father (who still lives in his own home) and handles all her father’s affairs. Lois
enjoys neighborhood walks with Kevin and their Toy Fox Terrier, Charlie.
The The Screen Screen Door Door
Door
We’ve come this far by faith, leaning on the Lord, trusting in His holy word.
He never failed us yet (and He never will). We can't turn around.
We’ve come this far by faith.
As well as being the lyrics to a marvelous hymn, these are also the words by
which I try to live. I can’t trust in myself to make all the right decisions for
my life, but I can always trust in God. I don’t know that I would be where I
am today, had I not always relied on God.
