The 29th annual Taste of Bloomington took over
Showers Commons Plaza this weekend with record
crowds, tons of food and live entertainment. This year
the festival featured two stages, one for country and
one for other tunes. There were more than 50 diff erent
vendors and an expanded children’s area.
“It all was a success,” Ron Stanhouse, the festival’s
co-director, said. “We had a lot of compliments on the
children’s area, which was a little bigger this year...
It was all very family friendly, and I think everyone
enjoyed it.”
Hai “Howie” Yu was sentenced
to fi ve years in prison
and one year of probation
after pleading guilty to sexual
battery and criminal confi
years on the sexual off enders
registry after his release from
prison .
In May 2010 , Yu was captured
on video dragging a
mostly naked, highly intoxicated
woman into and out
of the laundry room at Foster
Magee .
When asked by witnesses
if the victim needed help, Yu
claimed that she was okay
and that she was a friend of
his . Th e two had met at a party
Smallwood Plaza doesn’t try to deny that it
attracts East Coast students with apartments
named Manhattan , Soho and Carnegie .
Ernie Reno , the spokesperson for Smallwood
Plaza , describes the location as a Class A property
that is an investment for residents who can
aff ord to live there .
At the apartment complex on College Avenue
between Eighth and Ninth streets, a twobedroom
apartment can cost as much as $1,250
a month , and a four-bedroom apartment can
cost as much as $2,550 a month .
More than 700 students live in the 223 apartments
at capacity, all of which are occupied by
students, creating a dorm-like atmosphere .
Sydney Myers , a 2007-08 resident, said when
she signed with Smallwood her freshman year,
she didn’t even look at the apartments fi rst . All of
her friends signed at Smallwood, so she thought
she would too . She said it was an easy transition
because it reminded her of an extended dorm .
But as the year progressed, Myers had to deal
with the partying of other residents .
She remembers falling asleep on the bathroom
fl oor to the sound of the fan to escape
the booming music coming through her apartment’s
thin walls .
She said she remembers the smell of alcohol
lingering in the air Wednesday through Saturday
nights, and the atmosphere wasn’t for her . She
said you also sometimes could smell marijuana
and other drugs in the hallways .
“It was great having the people I was so close
with a fl oor above me or a fl oor below, but I
could only do a year, ” Myers said.
However, Reno said the party reputation that
Smallwood often receives is an unfair portrayal
of the building . When the owners built Smallwood
in 2004 , they spent $700,000 on its security
system . Smallwood is lined with 156 cameras in
hallways , corridors, elevators and garages . Th ere
is also a member of security personnel on duty
about fi ve nights a week during the school year,
Reno said .
“You’re talking about a property that
has more than 700 young adults in it ,” Reno
said, commenting on talk that Smallwood
THE WORLD IS A CLASSROOM
IU STUDENTS GO GLOBAL WITH TRAVEL PROGRAMS
BY ADRIA NASSIM
anassim@indiana.edu
Each year, IU off ers a wide
variety of chances to learn not
only outside of the classroom
but also outside of the
country . Here are just a few of
the places to which students
are traveling this summer.
1. HAWAII
Sophomore Hannah Smith’s
“International Reporting” class
was originally scheduled to
visit Japan . Just hours before
the students’ departure ,
however, a massive
earthquake struck the
country’s coast , resulting in
a devastating tsunami and a
nuclear disaster .
“We started calling and
emailing sources just to see if
they were okay,” Smith said.
Plans were changed, and the
trip was postponed until the
summer. There was a change
in destination, too — the
students were sent to Hawaii ,
instead.
On the island of Honolulu ,
they had to fi nd a story
relating to some aspect of
Japan , do interviews and
necessary research , submit
a story on their chosen topic
and create an audio
slide show .
Smith chose to write about
Hawaii’s most popular dish,
the plate lunch , which
consists of a scoop of
macaroni salad , a scoop of
rice and some sort of protein ,
usually Japanese. “It was a
weird mix of cultures in one
Styrofoam box,” she said.
The island’s mix of
nationalities and histories was
not only found in its food,
but also in every aspect of its
culture, Smith said.
“It was absolutely amazing —
my favorite trip I’ve been on
by far, including trips abroad,”
she said. “Even though it was
in the same country, we had
to keep reminding ourselves
that it was because it felt so
diff erent.”
2. GREECE
Lizzy Colle said her favorite
reason to travel to Greece
is because of a small island
called Aeigna.
“There, we visited a local
pistachio farm and spent the
rest of the day touring the
island and living life as a local,”
Colle said. “The sail boats
docked from all around the
world were so cool.”
Colle recently travelled to the
country with her class “The
Business Cultures of Greece. ”
“We got to hear from
Hoosiers graduate,
fi nd national fame
Indiana author Kurt Vonnegut
said, “I don’t know
what it is about Hoosiers,
but wherever you go there
is always a Hoosier doing
something very important
there.”
Vonnegut was referring
to Hoosiers in a state-wide
sense, but these IU Hoosiers
have gone on to make their
mark, too.
BOOKER T. JONES
Co-writer of the classic
soul instrumental “Green
Onions” and front man
of Booker T and the MGs ,
Booker T. Jones won a
Grammy Award for lifetime
achievement in 2007 .
Th roughout the 1960s ,
Jones divided his time between
studying classical
composition at IU , serving
as a session musician at Stax
Records and playing music
with the MGs in Memphis.
During this time, he also
wrote classic songs such as
Otis Redding’s “I Love You
More Th an Words Can Say. ”
He graduated from IU in
1966 .
SCOTT JONES
An inventor who graduated
with a degree in computer
science from IU in
1984 , Scott Jones is widely
considered as the inventor
of voicemail .
Th ough the claim is debatable
due to other inventors
toying with the idea at
about the same time period,
Jones did create a working
voicemail system for the
phone company Bell Atlantic
in 1986 .
He built the system in
just three months — a system
that was both faster and
more reliable than those at
other phone companies at
the time, paving the way for
modern voicemail technology
.
Jones most recently created
the mobile answering
service ChaCha .
JAMIE HYNEMAN
Jaime Hyneman has held
many jobs since graduating
from IU , including a diveboat
captain and a chef .
Later, he would put his
special eff ects expertise to
use in the movies like “Naked
Lunch ” and “Arachnophobia
.”
But his most important
contribution to society
might be his weekly debunking
of some of America’s
most enduring myths as cohost
of the Discovery Channel’s
“MythBusters. ”
While at IU, Hyneman
studied Russian linguistics .
all types of businesses
— small businesses,
corporations, multi-nationals,
entrepreneurs, family
businesses and politics,” she
said. “The trip truly gave
me a better perspective of
doing business abroad and
encouraged me to continue
my international business
co-major.”
Colle said Greek classes
seemed to be much more laid
back than those in the United
States. The group attended
a small business class at a
local university, and students
were walking in throughout
the length of the lecture. One
student made a business
presentation in street clothes.
3. THAILAND
A group of 11 doctoral
students from the School
of Education traveled to
Bangkok, Thailand in June to
learn about postsecondary
education in Southeast Asia .
The course, “International
Service Learning in Thailand, ”
paired the students with
other students from six
Thai institutions to work on
various projects.
While the course provided
the students with an
understanding of education
in Asia, its designer and
The grass in some areas of campus has been noticeably taller this summer. That’s because
Campus Division , the department that handles the upkeep of the grounds, has been busy
cleaning up the 300 trees that fell during the powerful storms that swept through campus in
May . Campus Division manager Mike Girvin said while the eff ort might take all summer, most
of the tree removal will be completed before the end of June . Until then, though, some of the
less timely jobs, such as mowing the grass , might be on the back burner .
it would also provide a better
system works in the United
States.
“I hope that there is that
that you are a global citizen
and that you have a sense of
empathy and camaraderie
with colleges and universities
throughout the world,” Chism
said.
4. KENYA
Students in the class,
“Reporting on HIV/AIDS in
Africa ,” spent two weeks
learning about and reporting
on one of the planet’s
deadliest diseases and the
people who must face it.
After weeks of preparation in
Bloomington learning about
the culture of western Kenya,
the basic pathology of HIV/
AIDS and the epidemic in sub-
Saharan Africa, the students
traveled to Eldoret, Kenya .
While there, students worked
in two-person teams with
Kenyan partners to report
from Eldoret and rural villages
in the area. Each team wrote
feature stories about health
provisions in the Eldoret area,
before heading to Nairobi
reporting from international
correspondents .
5. RWANDA
As a part of the IU Books
& Beyond Project , four IU
students, as well as four IU
staff members , will deliver
2,100 books to the Kabwende
Primary School in Rwanda .
“They will travel for two
weeks, spending one week
at the Kabwende Primary
School delivering the books,
conducting teacher trainings
and hosting a community
dialogue,” said Lauren
Caldarera, assistant director of
the IU Global Village Living-
Learning Center .
The Project pairs IU students
with students from other
schools. Together, they write
and illustrate children’s
stories . Meanwhile, thousands
of miles away , students at the
Kabwende Primary Center
work with mentors from a
neighboring school to create
their own stories .
The students in the Project
then raise money to publish
the books before making the
June trip to deliver them to
the students at Kabwende ,
where they are used as
English language learning
materials and to help combat
6. INDIA
At the end of July , students
in the class, “Business in the
Flat World ,” will travel to India
to learn about globalization
and emerging economies ,
as well as the economy and
businesses specifi cally in
the country .
“The itinerary for this year
is pretty exciting,” said Tia
Trueblood, assistant director
of International Programs at
the Kelley School of Business .
“They will spend four days
in New Delhi, where they
will do a number of business
and cultural visits, including
a Suzuki manufacturing
plant and meeting with an
important political fi gure.
They will do a day trip to Agra
to visit the Taj Mahal. Then,
they will fl y to Bangalore,
where they will visit local and
multinational businesses.”
The students will also take
a day trip to Mysore , a city
that recently made national
headlines after two wild
elephants went on a rampage
in June .
Ind. economic recovery sluggish
FROM IDS REPORTS
Indiana’s economy
is stuck in idle, according
to the Leading Index
for Indiana (LII) ,
a project of the Indiana
Business Research
Center at IU’s Kelley
School of Business .
Th e LII fell by 0.5
percent in May, reaching
96.4 .
Th e fall, while not
catastrophic , shows
that Indiana’s recovery
is looking “increasingly
wobbly, ” the IBRC stated.
Th e LII had made
signifi cant progress
in fall 2010 , but last
month’s decline means
that Indiana’s economy
has lost all of those
gains .
Th e drop was based
on a number of factors,
according to the report.
Housing was one of
these. Confi dence in
the housing market fell,
which means that a recovery
in that sector “is
a long way off ,” the report
stated .
Th e automotive sector
also suff ered declines
. Car dealership
fl oor traffi c fell 5.9 percent
in the past year ,
the report stated.
Unfi lled orders for
vehicles and car parts
fell in April , and May
auto sales were disappointing
, falling 3.9
percent from last year .
Car sales were at approximately
13 million
in April, but they fell
to below 12 million in
May .
Th e LII was developed
for Indiana
businesses and gov-
ernments to provide a
signal of changes and
the general direction of
Indiana’s economy . It is
updated each month .
Th e LII’s lowest
score, 94.8 , came at the
beginning of 2009, after
a long decrease during
the economic crisis
that started in 2008 . Th e
index has seen some increases
since then, but
they have been at an
unstable rate .
Th e index reached
its highest post-economic
crisis score of
97.4 in January of 2011 .
Th e LII made increases
from fall 2010 to
the January 2011 peak,
but all of those gains
have now been erased
after May’s update.
IU ranks poorly on rape convictions
Sexual crimes less likely to go to trial on Indiana and Illinois campuses
FROM IDS REPORTS
Indiana and Illinois
universities are among
the worst in the nation in
obtaining convictions for
sexual assault .
A Chicago Tribune survey
found that police have
investigated 171 cases of
sexual crimes at six campuses
in the two states
since 2005 , resulting in 12
arrests and four convictions
, according to the Chicago
Tribune.
Th e universities the
Tribune surveyed were
the University of Illinois
campuses in Champaign
and Chicago , Illinois State
University , Northwestern
University , the University of
Notre Dame and IU .
Th e statistics mean that
about one in 14 cases of
sex crimes on Indiana and
Illinois campuses results
in an arrest .
Th e Chicago Tribune
reported that about 33 percent
of those arrests end in
a conviction .
Nationwide, about one
in every four sex crimes
cases results in an arrest .
Of those arrests, 62 percent
are convicted , the Chicago
Tribune reported.
Russlynn Ali , assistant
secretary for civil rights
in the U.S. Department of
Education , told the Tribune
these statistics are part
of a larger trend .
“I say this, albeit with a
very heavy and saddened
heart, ” Ali said. “Th ese
kinds of data are illustrative
of the disturbing and
alarming trend we are
seeing across this country. ”
Th ree universities did
not report any convictions ,
and IU had only one .
Last week, Hai “Howie”
Yu was convicted in a brutal
sexual battery and criminal
confi nement case , the only
IU sexual crime allegation
to result in a conviction
since 2005 .
Th e Chicago Tribune
also cited the case of IU student
Margaux Janda , who
accused a fellow IU student
of rape in 2006 . Police did
not press charges against
her alleged attacker , and
the University suspended
him for a year .
An investigation by the
Department of Education’s
Offi ce of Civil Rights found
that IU had acted “promptly
and appropriately, ” but
Janda still left IU .
“Part of me wonders why
someone would even bother
making a report, ” she
told the Tribune. “What’s
the point in going to police
if they don’t do anything
about it? It almost makes
me feel worse. ”
IU researchers to survey tree management
FROM IDS REPORTS
IU researchers want to
know exactly what you’re
doing in your backyard — at
least when it comes to trees.
A survey is being conducted
that analyzes how
citizens of Bloomington
make decisions about managing
their lawns and trees .
Researchers from the
Center for the Study of Institutions,
Population and
Environmental Change at
IU’s School of Public and
Environmental Aff airs are
conducting the survey .
Drive 22 mph in a 30 mph zone.
Or be that city bus that I have to
drive behind all the way home that
makes more than complete stops
at every stop sign as well as dropping
a single person off at each of
the stops.
I’m willing to listen to other
opinions on most topics. But when
it comes to driving, I stand fi rm in
my position that you’re in my way
and you need to move.
In pop culture terms, being
stuck behind slow as molasses
drivers makes me almost as
mad as that one city in Canada
was when their hockey team
celebrated being second best.
One minute I’m free, cruising
down the street, blazing my own
trail, and the next a Buick LeSabre
decides to slow my roll by pulling
out and waiting a block and half
before getting up to speed.
Other types of cars are notorious
as well, but when it comes
to LeSabres , they’re downright
But it isn’t just that you’re in
my way that bothers me. You see,
when you make that complete stop
that forces me to do so as well, my
Th e trip occurs once a year
and is called the Campus Allies
As a participant in this year’s
group of 39 student government
the United States , I can say my life
was radically changed during the 11
days I spent in the beautiful country.
While all the participants came
from diff erent political and cultural
backgrounds, the one thing that
bound us together was how strongly
we felt about the importance of the
U.S.-Israel alliance.
Th e trip provided for us a unique
chance to develop a personal story
to tell so that we could come
back home and share the truth
about Israel .
While there, I had the privilege
words can describe the shock I felt
after observing the reality on the
ground and what is often reported
to us back home here in America .
An example for me personally
was the security fence that is being
constructed between the predominantly
Jewish area and an
area known as the West Bank . Th e
view of what is presented to us by
the general American media and
the reality on the ground are two
completely diff erent things.
Before the trip, I thought the
fence was a concrete barricade separating
two distinct peoples without
regard to demographics. During the
trip I was made aware that only 6
percent of the actual fence was this
concrete barrier. Th e rest is a series
of metal fencing.
I was also told by a former Israeli
colonel in charge of part of the construction
of the fence just how carefully
the construction was planned
with regard to demographics on
the ground.
Just one of the many benefi ts of
the fence is that the number of suicide
bombings originating from the
West Bank has drastically decreased
since the construction of the fi rst
section of the fence back in 2003 .
Other excursions on the trip included
visits to the Golan Heights ,
the Israeli Supreme Court and the
U.S. Embassy in Tel Aviv .
Th e one thing I noticed while
traveling is just how physically small
everything is there. As a result, every
square mile holds so much
more value.
I have not even begun to scratch
the surface of being able to describe
what the trip was like. It was an eyeopening
experience to truly realize
that Israel is one of America’s closest
friends in the world.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin
Netanyahu put it right in a speech
recently when he said “Israel is
not what’s wrong with the Middle
East . Israel is what’s right about the
Middle East .”
Th is trip also helped me further
understand when Netanyahu said
in the same speech that the region’s
problems are not solely rooted in Israel’s
existence.
Israel’s enemies like to scapegoat
it for the region’s problems while
not even fully acknowledging that
nearly the entire problem is within
their own borders.
It seems as though the region’s
despots have done a good job diverting
their people’s frustrations
toward Israel instead of being
held accountable.
My heart for engaging in pro-Israel
activism was only reinforced as
I traveled to this country.
I would like to personally thank
the AIPAC staff and supporters
for making this trip possible for
all of us.
SARAH SAYS
Stay out of
my bedroom
SARAH HANN
is a senior
majoring in
journalism
and history
Many today are pushing for a
smaller government. Th ey don’t
like the Feds stepping in to bail
out companies, change health
care or tell them what they can
and can’t do in their own homes.
Yet it is many of these same
people who are telling others
what they can and can’t
do — get married. Or more accurately,
who can and can’t
get married.
What goes on in people’s
beds between two consenting
adults is none of
anyone’s business.
Why do people care so much
about others’ lifestyles that
they’re trying to push hurtful
laws through the legislature?
Indiana politicians are guilty
of such hypocrisy.
Th is state is one of 12 that
actively prohibits gay marriage,
and legislatures are trying
to add that marriage can
only be between a man and
a woman to the state
constitution.
Why does it matter to people
that others want to be married?
To have the same rights as everyone
else? To have equality
this country blathers about but
doesn’t actually off er?
Gay people deserve the same
as everyone else.
Th ey should be able to adopt
children into loving homes. Th ey
should be able to share insurance.
Th ey should be able to visit
each other in the hospital and
make decisions should the worst
happen.
Th ey should be able to get
married.
Civil unions, which aren’t legal
here either, aren’t enough.
One religion — or two or three
— doesn’t have the word “marriage”
trademarked.
If going to the courthouse
and standing in front of a judge
is called “marriage” for heterosexual
couples, it should be the
same for homosexual couples.
A religious ceremony has
nothing to do with it.
Studies show a growing number
of people agree with me. Not
only are Indiana -based companies,
such as Lilly and Emmis
Communications , speaking out
against the state’s constitutional
amendment to ban same-sex
marriages and civil unions , but
according to the Pew Center ,
more and more people support
gay rights.
Public opinion is about the
equally divided, whereas a mere
10 years ago, a “solid majority”
was against gay rights.
Th is trend toward acceptance
is especially strong among the
“millennials,” or those born within
the last 30 years; two-thirds of
this group supports gay equality.
If I had to guess, I’d say when
my generation is the dominant
group in power, things
will change — if they don’t
before then.
What does legislating people’s
personal lives bring except a
lot of pain? Do people feel satisfaction
by forcing their religious
beliefs on others? It would make
me feel dirty.
If certain groups really want
to change the way government
operates — smaller government,
less invasive — they should start
by changing their own actions
and stop being hypocrites.
Th e sky looked bad for
most of the day and the radar
looked even worse. But
Saturday, for some reason, it
refused to rain.
Th is lack of precipitation
helped make for a crowded
Taste of Bloomington during
the course of the festival’s
eight hours. Many booths ran
out of items by 8 p.m., but
that didn’t deter the crowds.
“Th e radar looked pretty
bad. We had some phone
calls from restaurants asking
about cancellations,” Ron
Stanhouse, the festival’s codirector,
said.
After record-setting attendance
last year, the 2011
edition was even larger. Stanhouse
said indications were
that about 25 percent more
people made their way to
Showers Common Plaza this
year. It was the fi rst time the
festival has been there, which
Stanhouse said he thinks
helped make for many fi rsttime
visitors as well.
“We had a number of
people tell us it was their fi rst
time attending. I think the
country stage had a lot to do
with that,” he said.
Th e Hoosier Country 105
stage, another new part of
the Taste, featured three local
acts and also big-label talent
Josh Kelley. Stanhouse said it
spoke, in part, to the popularity
of country music.
Alex Giesick, a 2011 IU
graduate, didn’t watch the
country stage but said it was
his fi rst time attending the
festival. He came to get Short
Stop barbecue.
“Th e food was good. It was
kind of crowded and hectic,
but that wasn’t a big deal with
all the diff erent vendors and
stuff going on,” he said.
own individual battles with
the issue of indulgence and
restraint and found that the
balance between the two dictates
the quality of every individual’s
abroad experience.
Th e most obvious temptation
faced while abroad is the
desire to abuse your monetary
budget. Not to exacerbate
the stereotype, but let’s face
it — we’re all starving college
students here, and budgets
are slim. Life is expensive
abroad, particularly in Europe
where a single euro is worth
1.4 American dollars.
My harmless 3 euro afternoon
slice of pizza actually
costs $4.33 after I consider the
exchange rate and transaction
fee. Getting 30 euro worth
of groceries doesn’t seem
too bad until you realize that
you’ve actually just spent almost
$50.
Th e same issue applies
to shopping, probably my
And I almost fall for it, until
While the shopping demon
might not seduce every
goddess called Vino certainly
lurks in the shadows of all of
our minds. In Italy, we are in
the land where wine fl ows like
JUNE 7 — DAY 5
11:30 A.M . — BPD Lt. Bill Parker
conducts the fi rst Lauren
Spierer press conference
and releases information
on what Police know about
Lauren’s activities in the hours
leading to her disappearance,
including going to Kilroy’s
Sports bar and an apartment
complex on 11th and Morton
streets.
Police say Lauren left Sports
at about 2:30 or 2:40 a.m .
and walked to Smallwood
Plaza with a friend but did not
enter her apartment. She and
that friend then went to the
complex on 11th and Morton
streets. Lauren left around 4:30
a.m., heading back home to
her apartment at Smallwood.
A male friend last saw Lauren
on the corner of 11th Street
and College Avenue .
8:30 P.M. — Police serve a
search warrant at Smallwood
Plaza , breaking into the
security room and the mail
room and taking pictures of
the rooms’ interiors. Offi cers
and four CD cases .
JUNE 8 — DAY 6
11:30 A.M. — Police confi rm
that they obtained security
video from Smallwood during
the search. The BPD wanted
the footage as evidence, but
Smallwood administrators
asked them to obtain an
offi cial search warrant fi rst. Lt.
Parker says they were denied
access into the rooms they
needed to enter even after
getting the warrant, so they
had to force their way in.
Parker says no one who works
for Smallwood is a person
of interest and that there is
nothing new in the footage.
Parker also says the entire city
has now been searched, and
they are starting to expand the
search into surrounding areas,
despite not having any specifi c
tips directing them to do so.
reports of an altercation
involving Lauren and IU
student Corey Rossman
when they both arrived at
Smallwood Plaza around 2:40
a.m ., June 3 .
“Lauren was not involved in
any altercation,” Lt. Parker says,
but he adds the BPD is not
prepared to release the names
of people who were involved
in the event.
Parker also says the BPD has
video footage that shows
Lauren traveling north from
Smallwood toward apartments
at 11th and Morton streets
with an unnamed male. Parker
refuses to provide specifi c
details regarding Lauren’s state
in the video.
Parker says there are about
10 persons of interests in the
case, some of whom have
hired lawyers, but there are no
suspects. Police continue to
search Lake Monroe.
JUNE 10 — DAY 8
3:30 A.M. — Police conduct a
traffi c stop, question drivers,
walkers and bikers travelling
down North College Avenue .
About 135 vehicles are
pulled over.
11:30 A.M. — Police announce
that Lauren’s case will be aired
on “America’s Most Wanted”
and the BPD will bring in a tip
management program to help
handle the expected increase
in tips. Lt. Parker announces
that the U.S. Marshals are now
helping with the search. He
also says the early morning
traffi c stop did not lead to any
new tips.
Divers continue to search
Lake Monroe.
6 P.M. — Corey Rossman’s
attorney, Carl Salzmann ,
confi rms that Rossman met
with police. Salzmann had
previously told members of
the media that his client was
involved in the altercation
at Smallwood .
JUNE 11 — DAY 9
11:30 A.M. — BPD Capt. Joe
Qualters begins conducting
the press conferences.
Police ask area businesses to
turn over any video footage
they may have from near the
area of Lauren’s disappearance
and urge community
members to come forward
if they have any information
concerning Lauren.
“Let us be the evaluator of
the quality of information you
have to off er,” Qualters says.
the festival with more than
enough energy to match the
crowd.
“Josh Kelley is a national
act, the highest caliber of
entertainment,” Stanhouse
said. “But I mean, Reverend
Peyton puts on a great act.
Th ose guys were incredible.
And Hairbanger’s Ball was
dead-on too. Everyone was
so into it.”
because they didn’t want to
“go greek,” and they felt it was
the closest thing to the fraternity
and sorority atmosphere .
“It’s like a separate bubble
from IU, ” Suchov said. “You
don’t have to go to the bars
to have a party. When you’re
living with sophomores and
juniors, if you’re going to pregame
it’s easier to do it when
you’re all under one roof. ”
However, Reno said he
thinks Smallwood’s security
system slows the party
atmosphere .
“We do what we can to
keep habitual troublemakers
out of the building, ” Reno said.
Smallwood has a “no
trespass” list of people who
might have destroyed property
or caused a disturbance
to residents .
Reno also said if the owners
hadn’t made that initial
“We know people have the
ability to talk themselves out of
Qualters also says the police
have spoken to about 10
persons of interest but that
it’s important not to make the
leap from persons of interest
to suspects.
JUNE 12 — DAY 10
11:30 A.M. — Bloomington
Police receive between 30 and
40 tips following the airing of
“America’s Most Wanted.”
Capt. Qualters says there are
persons of interests they have
yet to speak with, but they
believe those people will come
to them.
“We’ve had our doors open
for those individuals to come,”
Qualters says. “There is nobody
we can prevent from leaving
this county. We cannot compel
people to come back to us. For
those that we haven’t spoken
to, we believe they will come
talk to us.”
Qualters also says that a Texasbased
group, EquuSearch, has
joined the eff ort and that the
Marshals were conducting a
sex off ender search, in which
everyone investigated was
compliant.
Throughout the day,
investigators fl y over the
Bloomington area , looking at
water ways, railroad tracks
and rooftops.
JUNE 13 — DAY 11
11:30 A.M. — Police announce
that at least one vehicle has
come to their attention in the
search to fi nd Lauren.
The FBI begins enhancing a
video showing the vehicle near
the intersection where Lauren
was last seen. “This is a person
that very well might have
information that might lead to
Lauren,” Qualters says.
JUNE 14 — DAY 12
11:30 A.M. — Police release a
more detailed description of
what Lauren was wearing the
night she disappeared, and
the FBI continues to enhance
video of the vehicle.
Qualters says he believes
the BPD has conducted
preliminary interviews with
all of the original persons
of interest, and everyone
has been cooperative. He
also says the BPD has heard
many rumors about Lauren,
and they’re not disregarding
anything they’ve heard.
“If you close your mind off to
any possibility, then you close
your mind off of what could
While everyone older
than 10 danced to the music,
the youngest attendees
walked around with faces
painted and enjoyed an
expanded children’s area.
Th ere was defi nitely something
for everyone, and even
the vendors enjoyed the
atmosphere.
“I just thought it was
great to have such musical
$700,000 investment in the
apartment’s security system ,
police would be lacking critical
evidence in fi nding Lauren
Spierer , a 20-year-old IU
student that has been missing
since June 3 .
Reno said Smallwood
has done everything it can to
comply with police in their
search for Lauren and at the
same time, not disturb their
residents . On June 7, police
entered Smallwood with a
search warrant .
Reno said no one was at
Smallwood at the time to let
police in, but a property manager
said he could be there in
10 minutes . However, BPD
did not wait for the property
manager . When the property
manager arrived, BPD had already
entered the building and
the property manager helped
them remove the hard drives
have possibly happened,”
Qualters says.
JUNE 15 — DAY 13
11:30 A.M. — Police release
pictures obtained from
surveillance video showing a
white four-door truck — the
vehicle the BPD is interested
in. According to time stamps
on the videos, the truck drove
north on Morton Street at 4:14
a.m. , before appearing again
heading west on 10th Street
at 4:24 a.m. , meaning it circled
the block.
Qualters says there is
“absolutely” a chance this
vehicle is involved in Lauren’s
disappearance.
JUNE 16 — DAY 14
11:30 A.M. — Police release an
updated timeline and map of
the hours leading to Lauren’s
disappearance. Capt. Qualters
says the BPD have completed
canvassing a half-mile radius
around the intersection where
Lauren was last seen and that
they are still asking for tips
regarding the white truck.
JUNE 17 — DAY 15
11:30 A.M. — At a press
conference, Capt. Qualters
says the BPD is continuing
to work through the nearly
1,000 tips they have received
since Lauren’s disappearance,
including more than 500 since
the photos of the truck were
released .
“Two weeks ago today
the Bloomington Police
Department received a
missing persons report on
Lauren Spierer,” he says. “Since
that time an extraordinary
eff ort has been put forward.”
Qualters did not take any
questions from reporters and
did not give details about a
WTHR report that said police
removed evidence from
Smallwood Plaza early Friday.
naked . Only the judge, the
prosecuting attorneys, the
defense attorney and Sgt.
Slone could see the video .
During the fi rst of two
sentencing hearings, Yu and
his mother both off ered direct
apologies to the victim .
Howie Yu, while looking directly
at the victim, said, “I
hope you can get over this
Catholic candle store.
Hence, I have seen what
happens to individuals
when they give into
temptation played out
many times.
You don’t want to lose
sight of the fact that you are
actually studying abroad
— you still have course
work to complete and you
are still under the rules
and regulations of IU. Just
because you are halfway
across the world doesn’t
mean your actions won’t
have a devastating eff ect on
your life back in the Hoosier
State.
If you spend all your
money on pizza, purses
and Prosecco, your overdrawn
account statement
is still going to show up in
your parents’ mailbox. And
if you stumble into your
professor while wobbling
home with your new Italian
stallion, it’s still McRobbie
that you are going to have
to ask for your spot back in
and move on and live your life
to the fullest. I sincerely apologize.
I can’t believe you’re
going through this because
of me. ”
Th e victim explained during
the fi rst hearing that the
incident had changed her
relationship with her friends
and negatively impacted her
relationship with her parents .
“Honestly, they think it’s
my fault because I drank.
Th e fact that I had drank
should never give someone
the power to make a
decision for me, ” she said
as she fought back tears.
Her parents did not attend
the hearing .
After the sentence was
announced, Yu’s attorney,
Joseph Lozano, said it would
be disingenuous to complain
that the ruling was unfair, especially
considering Yu faced
the possibility of 40 years at
one point during the trial. He
also said he wasn’t sure about
an appeal right now but said
“Judge Harper obviously
very carefully considered
her decision. ”
Monroe County deputy
prosecutor Rebecca
Veidlinger said the prosecution
was satisfi ed with the
outcome, which was almost
exactly in line with what the
victim and state requested .
“By getting a guilty plea,
we can hold the perpetrator
accountable for these
actions, ” Veidinger said. “It
shows that, as a community,
we will not accept this behavior
and it’s worthwhile for
victims to report these cases.
Th e outcome can have a
big benefi t. ”
— Zach Ammerman
contributed to this report
the University.
Personally, I’m still a
big fan of the motto “everything
in moderation.”
I’ve defi nitely indulged
in my fair share of overpriced
pizza slices, and I’m
wearing my favorite new
European pants.
But I have also rejected
the temptress and maintained
my professionalism
as a student. When I return,
I will still be fi nancially stable
and on good academic
standing, but I will be a
more worldly and cultured
individual.
Take your abroad experience
and make it everything
that it possibly can be.
Be prepared to face a whole
diff erent world of temptations,
and indulge and restrain
wisely. Remember
your primary responsibility
is to be a student, and $2
Tuesday will still be there
when you get home. (And
it won’t actually cost $2.89).
NON SEQUITUR WILEY
HELP ME, HARLAN! HARLAN COHEN
Dear Harlan,
When it comes to sharing
feelings with a friend, I’ve
been off ered the advice, “Take
a chance.” I’ve always been
an analytical person who
constantly tries to evaluate a
situation, but I’ve found that
whenever I take a chance, the
timing is always somewhat off .
How does one know the
right time to take that chance
when telling someone how he
feels about a friend?
Taking a Chance
Dear Taking a Chance,
The wrong times are much
more obvious - never share
feelings when a friend is giving
birth, unconscious or about to
exchange vows on her wedding
day.
More important than the
right time is the right approach.
Before approaching her, make
sure you have other friends. If
she freaks out or gets weird (it
happens), you’ll need to have
other friends.
Next, make sure you have
other romantic options. If this
friend is the only person in the
world you think you’ll ever be
attracted to, the stakes will be
too high and you’ll freak out or
get weird if she’s not into you.
Finally, give her permission
to NOT share your feelings. This
means being comfortable with
her being just a friend. When
Harlan Cohen
is a syndicated advice columnist, author
and an IU alumnus. If you want
site at www.helpmeharlan.com.
you share your feelings with
her, make it clear that you are
comfortable being friends, but
had to take a chance.
If things get weird, remind
her that you respect and
value your friendship and
never wanted to chance your
friendship. Then chance it again
in a few years.
Dear Harlan,
I was always the “weird” kid in
high school, and even through
my years at the community
college, it’s been really hard
to fi nd a place, and I haven’t
actually made “real” friends.
I have my acquaintances and
classmates, but no real people
to hang out with. My problem
and big block for me is this wall
of trust that I have built around
me.
It’s like I keep people at
arm’s length - I’m very friendly,
but always scared that they
will break my trust. Is there
something that I can do about
this, to make people feel like I’m
not so standoffi sh?
I try to be better with it,
but it’s so hard to put people
in my “bubble.” I really work
at friendships to keep them
Not Connecting
Dear Not Connecting,
Making friends at community
college is like making friends
at a red light. It’s hard to get
to know anyone well enough
to trust them when everyone
is speeding off in diff erent
directions.
The problem might not
be that you’re in a bubble - it
could be that you’re not putting
yourself in situations where
you are forced to get to know
people over time. Make a list
of ways you can have shared
experiences and get to know
people over time.
You can get involved in a
team sport. Volunteer to be in a
group that plans events. Get a
job as a camp counselor, at an
amusement park or in a place
where people your age are
together.
Go on a religious mission.
Travel abroad for the summer.
Shared experiences over time
will create lasting friendships.
It might not be that you’re
weird or can’t trust people - you
might not be sharing enough
experiences with people over
