These verses were published in 1855 during the excitement
incident to the appearance of the Silver Lake Sea Serpent, and are
sub-titled "The Snaik' s Reply to Joab Beeswax,"
Now Joab, I will do my life,
"Uncaring Consequences"
I've got a man from Pike to act
As my amanuensiso
You're right old Beeswax, I'm the brute
Who once hob-nobbed with Adam,
And in the garden gave the fruit
That mistified his madam. *
The same old Serpent St. John saw
Chained down In degregation
A thousand years, for which please see
The Book of Revelation.
There in the Euxine mud I lay
Unseen by man or maiden
Till frightened up in Silver Lake
By Crimean canonading
I gnaw the wheat and milk the cows,
While farmers take their nooning,
And raise the very duce with boys
Who are out dark nights a cooning.
I gobble up the pickerel
And pouts beside me swimming
But never swallow yearling bulls,
Or old unmarried women.
I cannot stop to call on friends,
But whisper to these coots
Who drink my health in Schiedam Schnapps
They r ll find me in their boots.
Lately hear one Daniel Smith
A bloody minded whaler,
Has come to catch me with his boat
And a crew of dirty sailors.
One glance from out my fiery eyes
Would scorch his crew to cinders,
Or one blow from my scaly tail
Would knock his boat to finders,
