4 UT Health Science Center
Message From The Dean
Laura A. Talbot, PhD, EdD, RN
At this writing, I am celebrating my first six months as Dean of the UT College of Nursing,
and I am pleased to report how excited I am about the initiatives we are undertaking. First
let me thank all those who have taken time to extend such a warm welcome. It has been a
pleasure to meet so many of the accomplished men and women who are alumni, donors,
students and friends of UT Health Science Center and of our college in particular. I must
also take a moment to praise and thank the talented faculty members of our college who are
committed to serving this institution and our students with their very best work.
Together, our team has already undertaken some significant projects. In October, we
reorganized the college’s structure. We are confident the new alignment will benefit us as
we strive to augment existing programs, and develop new initiatives. On page 29, we have
outlined the college’s reorganized structure.
On page 31, you’ll read about the reactivation of the UT College of Nursing BSN program. On November 30, we received
the final approval required to move forward to recruit outstanding students for our renewed BSN program. We are committed
to providing well-educated, superbly trained nurses at every educational level – bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral. Our BSN
program is an important re-entry in an area of health care that needs competent, caring professionals with training of all types.
With all the challenges and changes on the horizon in health care, nurses continue to serve on the front lines of health care,
often being the first point of contact for millions of men, women and children in need.
In September, we completed a physical move of the entire college, leaving the Lamar Alexander building for newly remodeled
space on the 9th and 10th floors in 920 Madison. We are grateful to Chancellor Schwab and Executive Vice Chancellor and
Chief Operations Officer Ken Brown for their support in designating new, modern work space for our team. For a few images
of our new space, see page 30.
Please take a moment to review the statistics in this annual report. Through academics, research, grant funding, outreach and
faculty presentations, we are growing our enterprise and reaching new heights. Together, we can continue to advance the growth
and incredibly positive impact of our college. Thank you for all you do in support of the UT College of Nursing. I look forward
to working with you in the months ahead.
Message From Alumni Board President
Elizabeth Ellis, DNP, APRN, FNP-BC, FAANP
It has been just a few short months since our reunion last spring and the college has been very
busy with exciting changes! We have welcomed our new Dean, Dr. Laura Talbot, and held
a historic Alumni Board meeting in Knoxville in conjunction with the College of Pharmacy.
The meeting in early November was filled with productive board business and some fun
events such as attending a Vols game that welcomed Missouri to the SEC! There is nothing
like tailgating with fans and watching football in Neyland Stadium. GO Big Orange!
Our meeting started out with a warm meet and greet with UT Knoxville College of Nursing
Dean Victoria Niederhauser. We were honored to have her join us over breakfast and hope
that we will be able to continue to partner with Knoxville in efforts to expand and support
nursing education. At this meeting, we received an update from Dean Talbot and welcomed
eight new members to the board! Our new members bring a wealth of experience and
knowledge to the board thus, we hope to accomplish great things over the next few years.
Throughout the weekend, much discussion ensued about the continuing national nursing shortage. American Association of
Colleges of Nursing (AACN) projects the number of employed nurses will grow from 2.74 million in 2010 to 3.45 million in
2020. Nursing jobs are definitely on the rise with The Bureau of Labor Statistics confirming that 296,900 jobs were added
to the health care sector in 2011, and nurses will be targeted to fill many of these positions. According to AACN, current
enrollment of undergraduate nurses across the nation is up, but they are still not sufficient to meet the impending demand
associated with health care reform. This shortage is in large part due to the lack of available nursing faculty.
We cannot educate the number of nurses needed in the communities we serve without retaining the quality faculty we have
and recruiting new qualified faculty. Thus, now and over the next year I am asking you to think about “Where would you be
without UTHSC?” Please consider making a donation now and/or donations for the future such as deferred gifts. We need
to support the college in creating the available resources to expand our faculty. A very important recruiting/retention tool
is to develop endowed professorships and provide continued financial support for salaries. Your donations large and small
are critical to our success. Consider making a donation now before year-end to receive 2012 tax credit.
I know that I certainly would not have been successful in my nursing career and enjoy continued success at work and home
without UTHSC!
Our spring alumni weekend is scheduled to take place May 2-3, 2013, in Memphis so make your plans now to attend, as
I hope to see you there!
UTHSC Breaks Ground on Translational Science Building
On June 8, 2012, Steve J. Schwab, MD, UTHSC chancellor, and UT President Joe DiPietro led the groundbreaking
ceremony for the Translational Science Research Building (TSRB), the newest building to begin construction on the
UTHSC main campus in Memphis.
“This is a seminal event for our institution because it reflects two things,” Chancellor Schwab stated, “the UTHSC commitment
to active research expansion, and this is the first in a series of new construction initiatives as we transform the UTHSC campus.”
He explained, “This building, as with the multi-discipline Cancer Research Building, which stands adjacent to this construction
site, will also be a multi-discipline research facility. It will house investigators from all colleges and departments, working on
cardiovascular disease. More than 40 investigators will work together in the Translational Science Research Building on advances
in heart and blood vessel disease.”
The TSRB will be a four-story, 135,000-square-foot structure that reflects the same layout as the UTHSC Cancer Research Building.
TSRB laboratories will be designed using an open format with an interior hallway connecting each of the labs on a given floor.
The connectivity allows researchers easy access to common equipment and to each other. Elevated walkways on the second,
third and fourth floors of the new building will connect the TSRB with the Cancer Research Building.
“UT does three things very well,” observed President DiPietro. “We educate, we discover and we connect. Looking at education,
discovery and connecting, no place is more important than the Health Science Center in keeping Tennessee healthy.”
TSRB construction has begun, and the building is expected to open in fall 2013.
The University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville Joins
Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital in U.S. News & World Report
Rankings for Best Hospitals in Nation
In the most recent U.S. News & World Report “Best Regional Hospitals Rankings,” the University of Tennessee Medical Center in
Knoxville, a core teaching hospital for the UTHSC Graduate School of Medicine, was nationally ranked in two adult specialties,
gynecology and pulmonology. UT Medical Center (UTMC) was also high-performing in 10 adult specialties: cancer; cardiology/
heart surgery; diabetes and endocrinology; ear, nose and throat; gastroenterology; geriatrics; nephrology; neurology/neurosurgery;
orthopedics, and urology. UTMC also scored high in patient safety, demonstrating commitment to reducing accidents and medical
errors. UTMC was nationally ranked as #2 in the state.
In an earlier ranking of pediatric hospitals, Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital was nationally ranked in five areas. The recent U.S.
News & World Report rankings named the Methodist hospitals, also core teaching hospitals for UTHSC, as #1 in the Memphis
metropolitan area and #3 in Tennessee. The five nationally ranked pediatric specialties at Le Bonheur, part of the Methodist
system, were neurology/neurosurgery; orthopedics; pulmonology; nephrology, and cardiology/heart surgery. The Methodist system
was also recognized for 12 high-performing adult specialties: cancer; diabetes; endocrinology; gastroenterology; gynecology;
neurology and neurosurgery; pulmonology; cardiology and heart surgery; ear, nose and throat; geriatrics, nephrology, orthopedics;
and urology.
This is the second consecutive year that Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital was named one of the best children’s hospitals in the
country. The UT Le Bonheur Pediatric Specialists faculty practice, with UTHSC faculty in Campbell Clinic Orthopedics and
Semmes-Murphey Neurologic and Spine Institute, constitutes the overwhelming majority of the specialist physicians in Le Bonheur.
Additionally, Erlanger Health System was cited as the Best Regional Hospital in the metropolitan Chattanooga area by U.S.
News & World Report. The rankings recognized Erlanger for seven high-performing specialties: diabetes and endocrinology,
gastroenterology, gynecology, kidney disorders, pulmonology, and urology. Erlanger is a main teaching hospital site for UTHSC
where the university provides excellence in medical student and postgraduate physician education.
“Our faculty and staff’s individual and collective commitment to compassionate, quality patient care and excellence in everything
they do are central drivers of these high rankings. We applaud them and our health care partners as we forge ahead together
to even greater accomplishments for the benefit of our statewide community,” said UTHSC Chancellor Steve J. Schwab, MD.
Organ Procurement – Where Does UTHSC Stand?
There has been much talk and publicity over the last few months regarding the issue of organ procurement in the Mid-
South. Our transplant program – the UT-Methodist Transplant Institute in Memphis – performed 260 liver, kidney and
pancreas transplants last year and was the fourth-largest liver transplant program in the United States. Now, our network
of organ donations is being threatened by a new structure that would allow UT-Methodist Transplant Institute access to only 25
percent of organs in the state.
Below are letters to the editor that Chancellor Steve Schwab, MD, transplant surgeon James Eason, MD, and Gary Shorb,
president and CEO, Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare (MLH), sent to The Commercial Appeal. UTHSC hopes that all faculty
and staff will get on board with our efforts by writing letters of support for a waiver application for Tennessee Donor Services to
be the designated Organ Procurement Organization for Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare to stop this restriction of vital organs.
Submit letters through: http://www.methodisthealth.org/articles/help-the-transplant-institute-continue-saving-lives.
Letter to the Editor,
Something is rotten in the state
of organ transplantation in
Memphis. Our city is in danger
of losing access to many of
the organs that are donated in
Tennessee for transplant; as a
result, lives could be lost. As a
native West Tennessean, I am
deeply concerned about this
threat to our lives and the lives
of our children.
Tennessee has had a longstanding
statewide agreement
to share organs donated for
James Eason, MD
transplant, but the U.S.
Department of Health and Human Services has ruled that the
plan is inconsistent with federal regulations governing allocation
of donor organs in the rest of the country.
The solution to this life-threatening dilemma is simple. Mid-South
Transplant Foundation, which is our local organ procurement
organization, could merge with its Nashville-based counterpart,
Tennessee Donor Services. Doing so would create a single organ
procurement organization for Tennessee and restore equal access
to organs – and life – for patients in West Tennessee, Memphis
and other areas of the Mid-South in North Mississippi and
East Arkansas. Last year Tennessee Donor Services had 220
donors compared with only 62 for the Mid-South Transplant
Foundation. Without a merger, Memphians will lose primary
access to those 220 donors.
The Mid-South Transplant Foundation is a not-for-profit
organization whose board of directors should be primarily
interested in the welfare of this community they have pledged to
serve. Tennessee Donor Services has been willing to merge and
help Memphians, yet the Mid-South Transplant Foundation
board refuses to merge to save the lives of their own friends and
families in Memphis. Why would anyone choose not to save more
lives in their community?
The only option we see other than merger of the two organ
procurement organizations is for the UT-Methodist Transplant
Institute to affiliate with Tennessee Donor Services. Our
8 UT Health Science Center
transplant institute has already applied to the Centers for
Medicare/Medicaid Services, a division of the Department of
Health and Human Services, for a waiver to allow Tennessee
Donor Services to become our designated organ procurement
organization. We are soliciting support for this request from our
city’s political and civic leaders, as well as from the community
at large.
Although Memphians are the victims of an unintended
consequence of federal policy, we must nevertheless adapt to the
new regulations and come together to unify organ allocation in
Tennessee for the greater good to save more lives.
The times have changed, and now the time is right for the
Mid-South Transplant Foundation board of directors to do the
right thing.
The United Network for Organ Sharing, a contractor that runs
the federal organ procurement and transplant network, has
dissolved Tennessee’s sharing agreement and limited Memphis to
a donor service area that covers parts of West Tennessee, North
Mississippi and East Arkansas. As a result, beginning at the end
of this year patients in the Memphis area and other parts of West
Tennessee who are awaiting an organ transplant will have access
to only 25 percent of the organs donated in Tennessee; patients in
the rest of the state will have access to 75 percent of those organs.
This change threatens the lives of Memphians and West
Tennesseans and the very existence of the transplant program
that serves them. The University of Tennessee-Methodist
Transplant Institute performed 260 liver, kidney and pancreas
transplants last year and is the fourth-largest liver transplant
program in the United States. Memphians would be parading in
the streets if any of our sports teams were in the Final Four. We
must show the same energy and commitment to maintaining this
lifesaving resource for our community.
A similar issue in 2006 and 2007 affecting the heart and lung
transplant programs in Memphis has subsequently resulted in
the lung transplant program being inactivated and the heart
transplant program performing only 10 transplants last year.
The waiting time for a heart transplant in Memphis is now
four times as long as that for patients in Nashville, and patient
survival is lower in Memphis.
James Eason, MD
Transplant Surgeon, Methodist Transplant Institute

Steve Schwab, MD Gary Shorb
Letter to the Editor,
We would like to set the record straight related to inaccuracies
made by Mid-South Transplant Foundation in your May 11
article “Disputes erupt over transplant changes.” Methodist
Le Bonheur Healthcare and the University of Tennessee Health
Science Center have always had the best interest of all community
members in mind.
Mid-South Transplant Foundation asserts that Memphis
transplant patients will not be disadvantaged by the loss of organ
access in late 2012 when the Methodist/UT Transplant Institute
loses access to organs provided by Tennessee Donor Services.
The reality is that there will be many fewer organs available
for transplant in West Tennessee; hence, fewer West Tennessee
residents will get a transplant. We performed 260 transplants last
A New Tree Blooms
year and only 46 of our organs came from Mid-South Transplant
Foundation. The difference is the number of patients who will die.
The foundation also claims there will be enough livers available to
support people in our community. We are on track to perform 150
liver transplants this year. Because of their limited service area,
Mid-South Transplant Foundation is simply not able to meet the
needs of our community’s patients.
Another assertion is that the current system somehow provides
an unfair advantage to UT-Methodist. They should be ashamed of
that statement. Nothing is fairer than equal access to transplant
organs for all Tennesseans. That is what we stand to lose at the
end of this year. Residents of West Tennessee will have less access
to organs than citizens in the rest of the state.
For Mid-South Transplant Foundation to say that people outside
the Mid-South “come here to cut in line” is absurd. The United
Network for Organ Sharing encourages patients to get on more
than one list and ensures that the sickest patients get organs first.
Nearly 90 percent of our transplant recipients live in Tennessee,
Arkansas or Mississippi.
We have nothing against Mid-South Transplant Foundation.
The fact is that it is the fifth-smallest organ procurement
organization in the country, meaning the number of organs it
procures is insufficient to serve our community. Most states have
statewide OPOs and that’s all we want. We simply want our
patients to have fair access to organs so they can have the best
chance of living.
64th Reunion a Treat for Cadet Nurse Corps Class of ’48
A special group of women, alumni from the UT Cadet Nurse Corps Class of 1948, gathered at Kirby Pines Retirement Community
in September to reunite at their 64th class reunion. Theirs was the last class of nurses to receive special training preparing them
to treat soldiers wounded in World War II.
The nurse corps was created in 1943 and, at that time, the federal government launched a massive recruitment campaign, so
successful that by 1945, 85 percent of nursing students in the country were cadet nurses. This nursing class didn’t complete
the training because the armistice ending WWII was signed only months after they started. Still, they were part of a group of
American women who had answered the call of duty to their country. They all went on to enjoy successful nursing careers in
areas from public health to neurology.
Hosted by one of the alumni, Bea Barnes and her husband Roy, who are residents at Kirby Pines, the event began Friday night
with a dinner, and concluded Saturday. Other alumni of the class were Alice Buford Morris, Evelyn Harris Stafford, Mary Culver
Herring and Jo Boswell Sayers.
Dr. Laura Talbot, dean of the College of Nursing at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, spoke at the kick-off
dinner. Other UTHSC staff members present were Jada Williams, Nell Blair and Amanda Lane.
Bea said seeing her classmates was a treat. “It was delightful. It was just like homecoming.” She said that although the group had
stayed in touch over the years, it was the first chance they had to get together as a group in quite some time. The alumni finished
out the reunion on Saturday, after spending the day sharing stories about their careers, marriages, children and grandchildren.
Uses Webinars to
Recruit Students
The CON implemented webinars
in July 2012 to recruit students for
the 2012-13 admission cycle.
Prospective students learned about
the CON programs by attending one
of many interactive presentations
transmitted over the web. Current
MSN, DNP, and PhD students join the
program directors and Dr. McKeon,
Student Affairs assistant dean, to
answer questions of the prospective
students. This format has been very
successful, in large part due to the
enthusiasm of the CON students in
sharing the “lived” experience of
their program.
Free Health Screenings Conducted by Scholarship Recipients
Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) scholarship recipients
who are first-year students in the MSN-CNL program conducted
health screenings and health education for children and adults
attending “El Festival del Día del Niño” at the Memphis Botanic
Garden on April 1, 2012. The students, along with Dr. Patricia
Cowan, teamed up with staff from CentroSalud Family Health
Center for this health promotion activity.
Each month, these scholarship recipients participate in
community-based service activities. These activities have
provided students with insight into the health care needs of
disenfranchised populations (homeless, person of color, those
living in poverty).
Nursing Student Ansley Stanfill Honored at 2012 Southern
Nursing Research Society Conference
Ansley Stanfill, RN, BSN, College of Nursing student at the University of Tennessee
Health Science Center (UTHSC), was awarded a prize for her dissertation research
at the 2012 Southern Nursing Research Society Conference, held in New Orleans,
La., in February. Stanfill’s award-winning dissertation, titled, “Dopaminergic Genetic
Contributions to Obesity in Kidney Transplant Recipients,” deals with genotyping
repository blood samples from kidney transplant recipients who gained or did not
gain weight after one year post-transplant. Salimetrics, a company that specializes
in analyzing saliva research, sponsored the award. Each award winner receives two
days of laboratory-based saliva research training at a Salimetrics Spit Camp, along
with $500 for travel expenses.
Spit Camp is a two-day session designed to assist researchers with training in the
integration of salivary measures into scientific studies. Each session combines lecture,
discussion, and hands-on laboratory experience to give attendees a basic knowledge of
oral fluids as biological specimens, proper saliva collection and handling techniques,
and the use of immunoassay techniques to measure salivary analytes. Camps are held
several times per year at the company headquarters in State College, Pa., at Johns
Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md., and at the University of California, Irvine. Spit
Camps are also given periodically by partner labs located in the United States and by Salimetrics Europe in Cambridge,
United Kingdom.
Being sent to Spit Camp will assist Stanfill in future research endeavors because she will learn to use saliva for the extraction
of necessary DNA. This would make recruitment of subjects for future studies easier, as the collection of the DNA would
not involve a needle stick, and also possibly enhance the translational aspects of her research.
Clinical Care
UTHSC College of Nursing
Practice Enterprise and Faculty Practices
The College of Nursing practice model
supports the clinical mission of the
University and contributes positively
toward integration of the additional
missions of teaching, research, and
service. Many nursing faculty are
engaged in the practice model, and
the CON provides the infrastructure
to faculty in achieving practice goals.
Clinical practice sites staffed by
faculty provide a variety of care
services to individuals, families and
communities, and focus on areas such
as primary care, behavioral health,
acute care, occupational health, and
women’s health through the roles of clinician, educator, researcher, consultant, and administrator. Engaging in practice
provides the framework for faculty to serve as expert role models in the delivery of quality care and achieving health
outcomes, integrate innovative models of care into diverse practice environments, and provide leadership throughout the
health care system. Additionally, directly being involved in providing care allows the opportunity for faculty to maintain and
enhance their knowledge and skills and insure ongoing expertise in their area of practice.
Dr. Peg Thorman Hartig, professor and department chair, Primary Care
2003. Health Station staff provide care through an average of 2000
patient visits a year. While originally established with a focus on the
emphasis on employee health is the reason for many visits, addressing
a variety of health monitoring and screening activities. Health education
is provided on an individualized basis and in a monthly newsletter
column to all Airport Authority employees. Two annual health fairs,
sponsored by the Health Station and the Memphis-Shelby County
Airport Authority, are held each year and are attended by employees and
the public. Employee visits address chronic illness (high blood pressure
and diabetes are a common focus), acute trauma (lacerations, asthma
exacerbation and injuries) and health promotion (allergy shots, weight
loss and maintenance, and questions about navigating the health care
system). Passengers often are seen with acute needs (stroke, chest pain,
post fall and other issues related to chronic illness, such as forgetting
insulin in a checked bag or breaking a bottle of liquid medicine). Dr.
Karen Olson, professor/CON, provides additional nurse practitioner
responsibilities. Ms. Arabella Mitchell Bruce, MSN, RN serves as the
full-time nurse and patient educator for the Health Station.

Integrating Mental
Health and Primary Care
In addition to her role as assistant
professor and FNP option coordinator,
Dr. Irma Jordan has developed and
integrated family/mental health
practice embedded in a primary care
site serving the mental health needs
of patients in rural West Tennessee.
Dr. Jordan’s practice exemplifies
her belief that mental health issues
should not be viewed as separate
entities from other general health
care issues. By building on the
integrated concept of mental health
and primary care (PC), those involved
in providing health care can help to
achieve higher quality health care for
people with mental health disorders.
Persons with mental health disorders
often do not seek or receive treatment;
however, if they do, they are likely to
first receive their care in the primary
care setting. Untreated mental
disorders exacerbate the mortality
and morbidity associated with other
chronic disorders such as diabetes
and cardiovascular disease. Having
a mental health practitioner on site
makes it much more likely patients
will receive the necessary care to
identify and treat the mental health
disorders that often times accompany
chronic medical disorders.
Doctorally Prepared Clinicians Bring Resources
to Rural Arkansas
Dr. Susan B. Patton is associate professor and interim director for the DNP
program at the College of Nursing. She is a pediatric nurse practitioner at East
Arkansas Children’s Clinic that she and her husband, Dr. Curt Patton, founded in
Forrest City in 1982. Her practice extends across outpatient and inpatient settings.
In addition to general pediatrics, she specializes in the care of neglected and
abused children. Her practice in Forrest City has not only provided valuable
experiences for the DNP nurse practitioner students but, according to Dr. Patton,
created a resource to bring direly needed clinicians into the rural delta of
Arkansas. Nurse practitioners B. Darlene Byrd, MNSc, APN, FAANP, and Chelsea
Kellow-Hedge, APN, both graduates of the UTHSC College of Nursing, practice at
the Children’s Clinic. Together, they are bringing the incredible talents
of doctorally prepared clinicians to primary care.
New Clinic Designed for Early Detection
Dr. Wendy Likes’ clinical practice has been
with the UT Medical Group gynecology-
colposcopy clinic for over eight years. Dr.
Likes and two collaborating physicians at
UTMG have been performing high-resolution
anoscopy (HRA) in at-risk female patients
coming through the colposcopy clinic for
several years. In 2011, Dr. Likes proposed the
development of a new clinic based on the
increasing incidence of anal carcinoma and
intra-anal neoplasia in both men and women
in combination with a lack of services to
detect these conditions. Cancer of the colon
and rectum is the third-most-common primary
cancer diagnosed in both Tennessee men and women. Dr. Likes is currently the
only health care provider in the Mid-South offering HRA for males. She has been
appointed the executive director and tasked with developing The Center for HPV
and Dysplasia (The CHAD) for UTMG. Her clinical practice and scholarly work are
leading to early detection of intra-anal neoplasia and other HPV related conditions,
and can prevent the development of cancer and find disease earlier in an effort to
decrease morbidity and mortality associated with these conditions.
