On October 18, 1862 my great great uncle Dr. Fr. Schoenfeld registered our company 

in his current legal structure as an industrial color manufacturer. (At that point in 

time his father ran already two shops (since 1829) for artist materials and a little 

production unit for paint (since 1842)) This was the starting point for a tradition that 

lasts for 150 years until today. 

This tradition and promise of the founder: To deliver to the artist first class professional 

material at reasonable cost drove all my predecessors – Paul Schoenfeld, 

Eduard Talbot, Christa Heusgen- and drives the company until today. This leads to 

an ongoing effort to adapt our products and processes to the needs of a specific time 

and artist generation: 

- The 4000 artists of the “Düsseldorfer Painting School” in the 19th century needed 

professional artist paint at reasonable cost. This implies paint that was manufactured 

by a local, industrial manufacturer. (Already in the 19th century industrially 

manufactured paint was often better and cheaper than handmade paint and transportation 

was very expensive.) 

- In the early 20th century the artist community tried to use a lot of new paint technologies 

that the firm developed with leading art professors around the world: 

Oil-Wax-Paint developed by Prof. A. Müller, oil-color-pens from Prof. Rafaelli, Petroleum-Paints 

for Prof. Ludwig, marble-casein paints, encaustic paints, oil tempera 

paints… We still today use the differentiation between finest artist colors, fine 

artist colors and student/decorative paint from that period. 

- Between the wars the demand of the artist focused more and more on the color 

products that we still offer today. The production program was reduced to oil color, 

water color and gouache. 

- After the second world war the most important issue was to rebuild the plant, 

that was completely destroyed and to restart production although there were a lot 

of raw material not yet available for German companies (like Arabic gums). Only 

after that was achieved and the new plant at Harffstrasse was running a revolutionary 

new development was brought to the artist community: ”LUKA CRYL” the 

first artist acrylic on the German continent. (European artists that visited the US 

challenged the Schoenfeld laboratory and its head Professor Hans Gert-Müller to 

develop such a fast and water resistant drying artist color.) 

- The youngest child of the “LUKAS family” is our water mixable oil color that Dr. 

Wolfgang Müller and Dr. Annette Kleine developed in the late 90ies of the last 

century. It corresponds to the need of some modern artists to work in oil without 

solvents. 

- The final steps in the last decade were to complete the SCHOENFELD product 

range by brands like BOB ROSS oil color or nerchau school and hobby paint in 

order to offer a wider and more competent range of color products for painting to 

our trade and artist customers. 

You can be assured, that also the current generation feels the same obligation 

towards the artist community that the founder gave to the company and 

works towards the goal to offer the artist only the best and professional 

material at reasonable cost.

How everything 

began... 

The time around 1850 

The mid of the 19th century in Germany was a 

time of change in daily life: The political revolution 

of 1848 finally failed but the building of a 

pluralistic society with a burgeoning press und 

the development of political parties in combination 

with the technically driven “industrial 

revolution” and modernization of the state administration 

in Prussia changed the life of the 

urban citizens dramatically. 

The town Düsseldorf 

Also the town Düsseldorf developed from a little 

town dominated by civil servants and some 

artists around 1830 (20.000 inhabitants, “art 

and garden town”) to a modern industrial city 

with more than 100.000 inhabitants in 1882. 

But through all times the cultural life in Düsseldorf 

was very active. People like Peter Cornelius, 

Wilhelm von Schadow (artists, heads of the 

leading European art academy), Karl Leberecht 

Immermann, Christian Dietrich Grabbe (story 

editors), Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, Robert 

Schumann (composers) were living and working 

in Düsseldorf.

Düsseldorf Painting School 

(1819-1918) 

Central point of the cultural life in Düsseldorf 

was the 1819 reopened Royal Art Academy. 

It developed in the middle of the 19th century 

under Wilhelm von Schadow for a period of 

50 years to the most important painting school 

in Europe. This image of the art academy led 

well known artists from all over the world to 

Düsseldorf in order to study, discuss and paint 

together. This group of more than 4000 artists 

was given the name “Düsseldorfer Painting 

School”. 

The technology 

Very important for the foundation of an industrial 

paint company was not only the local customer 

base - that means a lot of artists living in the 

area – but also the availability of a technology 

to “store and transport colors without drying“. 

For this reason the invention of the lead tube by 

the American John Rand was key for paint production 

in an industrial way. It also gave artists 

the opportunity to go into the nature, 

a circumstance, whose importance 

for art Auguste Renoir later described 

as: “The availability of color tubes allowed 

us to paint outdoors. Without 

this opportunity a Cezanne or Manet 

wouldn’t have existed as important 

artists and also not the impressionism.”

The Father 

Already in 1829, Stephan Schoenfeld, the father 

of the founder, opened an art supply shop 

directly in the center of Düsseldorf (Schadow 

street 30) with a retail outlet at the location Eiskeller 

1-3 opposite of the Royal Art Academy. 

This store, which was still in 1902 known as the 

largest and oldest art supply shop of its kind 

in Germany, had already from the beginning a 

production facility for artists‘ colours and painting 

utensils. The reason for this was the fact 

that usually colours still could not be packed 

storable without tubes. Therefore colours were 

freshly prepared in small amounts for the needs 

of the painter and e.g. sold in a small leather 

pouch in case the painter or his students were 

not producing the colour by themselves. (Colours 

in tubes were only available from United 

Kingdom as from 1850. These were very expensive 

due to the long transport way and thus 

unaffordable for most artists.) 

The Founder and his Idea 

In 1862, the 33 year old Dr. Fr. Schoenfeld decided 

to solve this problem with the foundation 

of a paint factory which ensured industrially 

produced artist‘s colours of highest quality 

made in Dusseldorf. In this way he gave many 

artists in the area of Lower Rhine / Westphalia 

the opportunity to concentrate on painting and 

not on the production of colours. 

He had acquired the necessary technological 

and commercial knowledge for this purpose 

not only in the family business, but also during 

his studies with Justus von Liebig in Giessen, 

Robert Bunsen in Heidelberg and Alexander 

Williamson in London.

Die Reaction of the Art 

The reaction of the artists on the new colours 

from the house Schoenfeld were enthusiastic 

from the start. For example, Vincent van Gogh 

wrote in 1885: 

“I sent for paint from Schoenfeld in Düsseldorf, 

a few colours that I can’t easily get 

here. The fact that the colour isn’t right in 

the painting of the potato eaters is at least 

in part the fault of the paint. I was reminded 

of it because I was painting a large still life 

in which I was looking for similar tones and, 

not satisfied with it because I was getting the 

same things as then in it again — redid it. And 

going by that experience, I would have got it 

much better with mineral blue, which I have 

now, than with what I had until now.” (Vincent

Or the statement of the world-famous Andreas 

and Oswald Achenbach brothers „The be-all 

and end-all of landscape painting“ 

„Today I like to express my great satisfaction, 

at the age of 81, to declare that I have 

used from the beginning of my artistic activity 

painting exclusively with colours from 

Schoenfeld and that my paintings have neither 

cracked nor ever darkened. 10 years 

ago, when there was an exhibition organized 

for my 70th birthday showing a larger 

number of my older and newer works, I received 

the clear proof of the colour quality.“

1862 · The company was founded on October 18th by Mr. 

Kommerzienrat (councillor of commerce) Dr. Franz Schoenfeld. 

First production facilities were in the Bismarck street. 

1892 · Move to the company headquarters in the Adler street - 

Pempelforter street opposite of the “Düsseldorfer Malkasten” 

Düsseldorf Paint Box club house (art association). Meeting 

place of artists in Düsseldorf. 

1899 · Extension building; start of the canvas production 

approx. 1900 · Introduction of Saint LUKAS in the new logo 

of the company. St Lukas is the patron protector of the painters 

- mentioned allready in the Middle Ages as the patron of 

the Dutch Guild of St Lukas. (The logo was designed by Prof. 

Gebhard, Düsseldorf) 

1907 · Kommerzienrat Dr. Franz Schoenfeld transfered the 

management of the company to his son, Paul Schoenfeld. 

1911 · Death of founder Dr. Fr. Schoenfeld, who left his extensive 

art collection of 150 paintings of the “Düsseldorf School 

of Painting” to the “Museum Kunst Palast”. 

1919 · Dr. Eduard Talbot, the nephew of Paul Schoenfeld, took 

over the management. 

1943 · Destruction of production and office building by bomb 

exposure. Production continued in the alternative facilities in 

Forchheim / Ofr. and Viersen. The management remained in 

Düsseldorf. 

1945 · Production began to a modest extent in Düsseldorf- 

Heerdt again. 

1951 · Move to the reconstructed main building at the Adler 

street – Pempelforter street.

1955 · Death of Dr. Edward Talbot. Christa Talbot took over the 

management of the company. 

1960 · Move into the newly constructed production and office 

premises in the Harff street 40. 

1962 · 100-year anniversary of the company Dr. Fr. Schoenfeld 

& Co. Düsseldorf. 

1964-1973 · Development of important, partly still valid, colour 

recipes by Professor Hans-Gert Müller, the editor of the 12 

- to 15 new edition of the important standard work of painting 

techniques by Max Doerner: „ The Materials of the Artist and 

Their Use in Painting.“ 

1964 · Development of LUKA CRYL as first acylic paint in 

mainland Europe. 

1987 · 125-year celebration, the management was taken over 

J.H. van Beek as the first, external manager in the management. 

1998 · Management taken over by Mr. Hubertus Heusgen, the 

great-great-nephew of the company founder. 

1999 · Development of LUKAS Berlin as first water-mixable oil 

colour on the European continent, which is comparable in its 

properties (consistency, drying and thinning behavior) with a 

traditional oil paint. 

2004 · Development and licensing of the BOB ROSS Oil colour 

range for the american television painter. 

2009 · Acquisition of the “Nerchau Painting and Artist‘s Paints” 

in Nerchau close to Leibzig from the Deutschen Amphibolin- 

Werken (DAW).

In 1862, Dr. Franz Schoenfeld (born in 

1829), the great-great-uncle of the current 

managing director, founded the Artists’ 

Colours and Canvas Manufacturers 

Dr. Fr. Schoenfeld (LUKAS); located in 

Düsseldorf, Germany. 

Across the highly respected Düsseldorf 

Academy of Art, Dr. Fr. Schoenfeld’s father 

owned a special artists’ materials 

shop, which was still praised in 1902 as 

the „greatest and oldest of its type.“ It 

was at his father’s shop that Dr. Fr. Schoenfeld 

discovered his own interest in art and 

artists’ materials. 

Dr. Fr. Schoenfeld studied in Giessen and Heidelberg. 

Graduating with a Doctor’s in Philosophy 

at the early age of 20, he then went on to 

broaden his knowledge and develop his scientific 

understanding working as an assistant at 

the University of London, followed by the Netherlands. 

In 1896, he chose a new location for the firm 

opposite the „Düsseldorfer Malkasten“ (Düsseldorf 

Paint Box). To this day, it remains an international 

meeting place for artists, architects, 

and writers. 

The production of water-colours has been 

around since LUKAS’ conception. One of the 

greatest advantages of liquid water-colour is 

its fast colour take up with the brush, which 

Dr. Fr. Schoenfeld found a way of incorporating 

into the recipe of the water-colour in pans. By 

doing so, he created the „moist artists’ watercolour“. 

From the outset, Dr. Fr. Schoenfeld has instilled 

a commitment to quality, without compromise. 

Our recipes have been optimally formulated 

in accordance with the most modern painting 

techniques and using only the very best pigments 

and binders. Through the combination 

of constant high-quality manufacturing we can

our colours, which is one of the best prerequisites 

for ensuring the durability of artworks 

over many generations. LUKAS artists’ colours 

are acknowledged to be among the best available 

for serious artists. 

Since the turn of the century 1900, the LUKAS 

symbol has been an important political branddecision, 

that continues to shape our corporate 

image. Saint LUKAS, patron protector of 

the painters, has become the name for all products 

from the manufacturer Dr. Fr. Schoenfeld. 

The symbol itself, has adjusted to the many 

graphic trends and tastes’ of the times, which 

makes it a true representation of the LUKAS 

company. 

In 1960, due to an increase in interest for LU- 

KAS artists’ colours, the company moved to a 

new location, on the outskirts of Düsseldorf, 

where the factory is still situated today. 

From the beginning, the company has remained 

the property of the founding-family. In 1907, 

Paul Schoenfeld took over the company from 

his father and just before his death, in 1919, he 

passed it on to his nephew Dr. Eduard Talbot. 

In 1957, Eduard’s daughter Christa Heusgen- 

Talbot inherited the company and passed it on 

to her son in 1998, Hubertus Heusgen, who is 

now the actual managing director. 

One of LUKAS’ best-known employees was 

Professor Hans-Gert Müller, editor of the 12th 

to 15th editions of the Max-Doerner-Classics. 

The Materials of the Artist and Their Use in 

Painting, was a standard book of painting techniques, 

available in the German speaking area. 

In 1964, LUKAS was the first manufacturer 

in Europe to produce artists’ acrylic colours. 

Consequently, LUKAS products have always 

been in accordance with the most modern 

techniques. 

This reason, along 

with LUKAS’ strive 

for superior quality, 

led many well-known 

artists to trust the 

quality of our colours 

throughout the years. 

One of the best known 

examples is that of 

Vincent van Gogh, 

who wrote in a letter to his brother, in 1885, 

that he had ordered colours from Schoenfeld 

of Düsseldorf. The Achenbach brothers also 

wrote that they were only using colours from 

Schoenfeld’s, as they were extraordinarily 

pleased with them. 

Furthermore, modern painters and graphic 

designers like Josef Beuys and Hans-George 

Baselitz, the designers of the STELLA Musicals, 

also came to trust in the supreme quality 

of LUKAS. LUKAS’s quality products are not 

only available in Germany, but also in more 

than 50 different countries such as; Norway, 

Canada, Australia, and the United States. 

The traditional company philosophy for LU- 

KAS Artists’ Colours and Canvas Manufacturers 

Dr. Fr. Schoenfeld stands to this day 

as; „Price-conscious and uncompromising 

in quality“. Our first priority is to serve all 

painters, restorers, and artists alike. 

One of the world’s biggest oil-paintings was painted in the 

city hall of Oslo in 1943, with LUKAS colours.

In LUKAS 1862 - Finest Artists’ Oil Colour, 

only selected, unadulterated pigments (such 

as high quality Cobalt, Cerulean or Cadmium 

pigments) from the tradition of old masters are 

used. At least 60% of all shades are singlepigment-made 

and by that they are excellent 

usable for clean-mixing of different brilliant 

colour-variations. A spoor (0,5-1,5%) of the finest 

bleached Bees Wax as one of the ingredients 

gives the colour the famous „buttery and 

short“ consistency and makes the colour-film 

less brittle for the restorer. The binders are from 

pure, vegetable, linseed and sunflower oils in 

„special quality“. Available in 70 colours in 37 

ml tube, with 68 shades and 2 metallic colours.

LUKAS STUDIO - Fine Artists’ Oil Colour, the 

modern professional quality with an optimised 

price performance ratio, contains only brilliant 

and consistent pigments with a high light fastness. 

A spoor (0,5 - 1,5 %) of the finest bleached 

Bees Wax as one of the ingredients gives the 

colour the famous „buttery and short“ consistency 

and makes the colour-film less brittle for 

the restorer. The binders are, as in all LUKAS 

oil assortments, only pure vegetable linseed 

and sunflower oils in special quality. Available 

from stock are 48 colour shades in 20 ml 

Tube, 37 ml Tube, 75 ml Tube und 200 ml Tube; 

as well as White (0208) and Black (0382) in

LUKAS BERLIN contains only selected pigments 

of the highest possible authenticity in 

its class. Modified linseed and sunflower oils 

in „special quality“ are used as binders. To enable 

an oil colour that is water mixable, without 

affecting its other characteristics (such 

as drying time, lightfastness and brilliance), 

SCHOENFELD has developed a special 

procedure of modifying oils to guarantee a 

nearly water-free and water-resistant (colour) 

film structure. LUKAS BERLIN dries in 

completely the same way as a real oil colour, 

which makes LUKAS BERLIN a very 

good alternative for professional painters 

and users with solvent allergies. Available

moist-pasty water colour in tubes to a recipe

the LUKAS moist water colour and the history

of this event we have given our Finest Artists’ 

Water Colour the brand name Aquarell 1862. 

The fundamental development of the company 

founder represents the basis of this water-colour 

of world-reputation still today. Finest artists’ 

quality with exclusively pure, high quality 

pigments of the highest permanence and 

concentration. Approximately 99% of each 

pigment is finely grounded to 2 µ (2/1000 mm).

LUKAS CRYL TERZIA is a well pigmented, 

matt drying, lightfast artists’ acrylic 

colour for study purposes. The viscosity 

is with 3000 - 4000 cP optimal for the fast 

preparation of large painting areas. The 

intensity of the shades is well balanced in 

order to achieve good results when they 

are mixed. The colour shade selection 

corresponds to the typical palette of an 

artist painter. All colours are mixable with 

all other acrylic-colour-assortments of 

LUKAS. In short, it can be called: „A real 

artists’ colour at an extremely attractive 

price“. Available in 24 colour shades in

Monotype with LUKAS iLLU-Color 

The high pigmented liquid ink LUKAS iLLU-Color is 

excellent for the additive printing technique of Monotype. 

The motif will be painted and the copy drawn 

with brushes, scrapers or with the pipettes of the 

iLLU-Color bottles on a plan, non-absorbing printing plate 

(e.g. pane of glass or metal plate), as long as the colour is

The basic components for making any paint 

are the permanent colour powders, so called 

pigments, plus binder, which enable the connection

Instructions for making Oil Colours 

at Home 

You need: a mixing plate with a rough surface, a glass pestle/muller, 

a palette knife, pigments, and a binder. To begin, we recommend 

that you try mixing an oil colour: whites should be prepared 

with a bleached sunflower oil (Art.No. 2222), and colours with 

linseed oil (Art.No. 2212/2213). Place a small amount of pigment 

on the mixing plate. Add sufficient oil to produce a stiff paste 

when rubbed with the palette knife. The paste is then rubbed with 

the glass muller using a uniform, a back and forth circular motion 

with slight pressure applied. 

With each motion the paste will become thinner. Each individual 

pigment needs a specific quantity of binder. Therefore a general 

rule on how much binder you will need is not possible. Just grind 

and add binder slowly until you reach a “buttery consistency’’. 

To reduce the drying time, some cobalt siccative (Art.No. 2229 / 

max. 1%) could be added to the paste mixture, or add linseed oil 

varnish (Art.No. 2215) instead of linseed oil because this already 

contains siccative.

Little Gilding Workshop 



Primer: 

The workpiece must be dry. Choose the surfaces to be gilded and if necessary mark them with a pencil. 

Then apply the shellac solution (2365). Depending on the surface several layers must be applied 

and each layer need to be dry. 

Gilding: 

Apply the gilding milk (2360) thinly by brush on the primer and let it dry. After 15 min. the gold can be 

applied. Lay the gold leaf on a gilding pad and cut it into small pieces. Attention: Avoid any air draft! 

Now take up a small piece of gold leaf with the gilders tip brush and place it.Tip: To load the gilders 

tip brush electrostatic just brush your own hair several times. Please pay attention that no gilding milk 

comes to the brush, otherwise the gold gets stuck. In this scheme gild piece by piece. After each part 

blow the gold to fix it on the ground. Do not press it down with your fingers!

The foundation 

must be right 

In addition to the right colour and proper brushes, 

painting surfaces are the most important 

items for the artist. Approximately 75% of the 

incoming problems handled by our technical 

advice service were evoked by an inappropriate 

or badly prepared base foundation. Some 

of the characteristics of a poor surface are that 

it absorbs too much or too little, is not grease 

free, primed badly, or the material itself is unsuitable. 

Therefore, we developed together with our

LUKAS Brushes 

An important tool 

Brushes are one of the most important tools for 

an artist. By using a proper brush, it is much 

simpler to transfer the artists’ ideas into an expressive 

and individualized painting. For this 

reason, SCHOENFELD, together with one of 

the best brush manufacturers from Bechhofen 

(a little town close to Nürnberg known as the 

cradle of German brush manufacturing) has 

developed a line that in terms of quality, price 

and performance is unsurpassable. 

This line consists of more than 40 different assortments 

- from the finest quality master brush 

made of the longest, most elastic hair from the 

back of a Kolinsky Red Sable to professional 

quality brushes made of special nylon fibre 

mixtures, to very inexpensive school brushes. 

The special thing about the LUKAS artist brush 

line is not just the quality, price and performance, 

but also the adjustment between brush 

and colour quality levels. Uniting a LUKAS 

professional quality brush and LUKAS professional 

colour is always the appropriate choice.

Why should I buy a LUKAS brush? 

LUKAS guarantees a quality product at a reasonable 

price. This is the main objective throughout 

the LUKAS program. In cooperation with our 

brush manu facturer, whose company is located 

in Bechhofen, a small town near Nürnberg, we 

follow this guideline 100%. (A prime example of 

our cost saving measures is that our manufacturer 

does not employ a sales force, nor do they

What is relevant when choosing a 

brush? 

Here are the answers to three basic questions, 

that aids you choosing the correct brush: 

1) What is the colour consistency? 

The answer to this question gives the right type 

of hair: 

• If the colour is liquid, for example gouache, 

water colour or thinned oil- or acrylic colour 

you need a brush that serves like a sponge, 

drawing as much colour as possible into the 

hair and distributes it slowly and evenly onto 

the painting surface. 

In this case you need: 

· Red Sable Kolinsky Hair (Master Quality) 

· Golden Taklon-Fibre (Professional Quality) 

· Ponex or Ox Hair (Student Quality) 

• If the colours consistency is very thick, as 

classic oil colours or acrylics you need hair 

that serves like a paint scraper, strong and 

elastic in order to drive the colour over the 

painting ground. In this case we recommend: 

· CHUNGKING-Pig Bristle (Master Quality) 

· Dark red TAKLON-Fibres (Professional 

Quality) 

· GOLDTORAY (Student Quality) 



2) What effect am I looking for? 

By answering this question you will find the proper 

brush shape. It is important to think about the 

trace the colour should show on the paper and 

get from the pictures on page 117: 

Round, Script line, Bright, Filbert, Angle shader, 

Fan 

3) How do I want to work? 

Vertical on an easel, or horizontal on a table? Your 

answer will give you the length of the handle: 

• If you work on an easel (oil/acrylic painting) 

and want to keep some distance between 

you and the painting surface, you should 

choose a long handle. 

• For working on a table (water colour, gouache) 

a short handle is easier to handle and 

therefore preferable. 

What is the difference between a master 

quality brush and a student quality? 

Is this difference really important 

for the painter? 

Our answer would be yes. The difference is relevant. 

Of course, it depends on the painting technique 

you apply, but everybody who works hard 

on fine structures, will soon see the differences 

between a handformed split-proof ultra-fine 

point and a standard brush point. Also, a hair that 

keeps a lot of colour to draw long lines without 

interruption has advantages. And this combination 

unfortunately requires very expensive hair (as 

a Red Sable KOLINSKY) that cost much more per 

kilo than gold or platinum, and requires special 

craftsmanship to bind.
