A boiiioiTatlo View of What Should
be Doiu1 t'li iin go Tribune SneuUs
of the Iti'ft'iition to the Hoys.
Here nro some lcvs on the annex-atlo- n
(jiiiMtloti. The Chlfitgo Tribune
says: Ah Senator Morrill is about the
only member of the opposition to the
Hawaiian tiniiexutioii who will be
to with respect, it is to be regretted
that he could not have Introduced
some contemporary human intercut
Into his consideration of the
subject.
An occurrence reported from Honolulu
only the day before Senator
Morrill's speeOh was delivered even
more urgently demanded attention at
the hands of this venerable statesman,
whose repute Is so high that he may
row without reproach In'thls sh-iing-e
galley of sugnr trust agents' and general
t'ussedness Democrats; may even
stroke their boat. That occurrence
was the enthusiastic reception of the
first brigade qf the army of the Philippines
by the people of Honolulu,
and the consequent protest of the resident
Spanish consul. That brigade
comprised little more than one-tenof
the army that will cross the Pacific
this summer. If the Islands are
not annexed the protest must, even
upon the Initiative of the United
States, be respected. This country is
the last one in the world that can afford
to establish such a precedent as
the disenibnrUment and refreshment
of troops on the shores of a weak neutral
power to the breach of that power's
neutrality.
The Democratic Louisville Post
says: It has not seemed to us necessary
to resort to n joint resolution to
secure llnwaii, but events legislate,
and war is but a series of important
events, Congress merely recording its
decrees. The battle of Manila settled
the Hawaiian question; it settled the
question of building the Xicnraguan
canal. It made certain the annexation
of Porto Itlco nnd a Cuban protectorate.
Vet we hold Democratic caucuses to
reverse the very decrees of destiny;
we once more throw the Democratic
party across the path of procress. But
the vote in the House yesterday records
the verdict of the American people;
the past is past and a new chapter
opens in American history.
We trust the so called leaders of
the Democratic party will study the
vote in the House yesterday and read
the people's response to the action of
n Bourbon caucus.
Strange Colony of Outlaws on the
Iionin Inland's.
A party of Japanese engineers,
which has been exploring the Bonin
Islands, found them iuhabitated by a
out-eas-
strange, motley population of ts
and outlaws from all nations,
French, English, Italians, Spaniards
and Scandinavians, being mixed up
with natives of the Far East. In a
delightful sub-tropic- al climate and on
a soil that yields everything necessary
for life, this strange community
contrives to exist without laws or any
form of government, and free from
rates or taxes of any shape. The Japanese
visitors state thnt soine of the
colonists who possessed some superiority
in education and manners were
recognized as chiefs, but' held no defined
authority.
EliECTBTC T5AITAVAY CABS.
The' West of (Trance Hallway Company
contemplates a new departure
in the utilization of its spare supply
of electric current. Its intention is
to provide electric cabs for the use
of passengers by its lines. The company
has nn electric plant which is
not used during the greater part of
the day, and would serve to charge
the batteries. Tt now asks builders
kto design an electric cab capable of
carrying four passengers and l.0 kilos
of luggage, and able to run fifty kili-mete- rs
daily. It will give six months'
trial to the' destgns sent in, paying a
daily rent for their use, and reserve,
tin- - right of making a choice at the
end of that period, nnd buying at a
price agreed upon beforehand the
vehicles which have taken part in the
competition. The cabs are to be furnished
with an appliance by which
the passengers' will bp nble to go for
a short Oistnnce and p'ay only according1
to the shortness of the trip. The
old plan of charging a friuice for a
quarter of an hour brought endless
disputes for want of a sntisfnetory
"indicator." ''The fare now hails a
cab for a short trip, and th.' driver
at onco turns two keys, which brings
the hands of a dial that marl; both
time and money to tho starting point.
The lowest fare allowed is, say, 1"
cents; but if the passenger rides for
over two minutes the charges goes up
to 14 cents. When six minutes have
passed the lmnd points to 80 centimes
or 1(5 cents. For 22 cents one can
drive for sixteen minutes, and for 28
cents twenty-thre- e minutes. This is
tho circuit of the system, for at .10
cents the ordinary tariff for the
course comes into operation.
Persons troubled with diarrhoea
will be interested in the experience
of Mr. W. M. Bush, clerk of Hotel
Dorrance, Providence, 11. I. Ho says:
"For several years I have been almost
a constnnt sunerer from disnrrhoea,
the frequent attacks completely pros
trating mo nnd rendering me unfit
for my duties nt this hotel. About
two vcars ago a traveling salesman
kindly gnvc me a bottlo of Chamber
lain's Colic, Cholera and Diarrhoea
Itemedy. Much to my surprise nnd
delight its cltects were Immediate.
Whenever I felt symptoms of the dls
enso I would fortify myself against
the attack with a few doses of this
valuable remedy. The result hns been
very satisfactory and almost complete
relief from the affliction." For sale
