BUS-S11 Getting the Most Out of WebSphere Portal for Optimized Web Delivery at Royal Bank of Canada
Delivering a sound, stable and flexible theme to meet all of your business needs without hindering performance of your portal can be
challenging. Learn from this team as they share the details behind the Royal Bank of Canada custom theme that met these expectations and
more.
We'll cover study of the default theme with tips on how we reduced and remove unnecessary components in our design to maximize
performance. Examples and suggestions on use of the StatePreProcessor services, and improving the performance and response time of your
theme will be presented. In developing a theme for a complex, client facing, high volume, financial web portal; during the migration from a
legacy custom platform to WebSphere Portal; we encountered several challenges. These included theme performance; providing a continuity
of client experience; delivering all existing functionality on the new platform; maintaining flexibility of the theme deployable; and delivering
theme ready to provide future functionality. Our team was able overcome these challenges with a thorough pruning of the of the out-of-the-box
theme; a careful redesign of the side navigation to support a complex business driven style; creation of a mechanism to allow dynamic changes
to the theme policy on a single page; engineering several features into the theme and StatePreProcessor to capture and reuse data from the
session and portlet data to empower navigation parameters, and maintain contextual information about clients. We'll also review how we
extended the default theme policies to express more then just basic layout information; externalized internationalized theme content including
navigational navigational data; introducing powerful page parameters to influence theme/navigations; and more. (Level:
TECH-B13 Happily Cohabitating: Achieving a Multi-tenant Portal
Speaker: David Eyerman, Executive IT Architect, IBM
In your organization, are lines of business all competing to have "their" portal? Does each business owner have a rock-solid argument why their
portal footprint as IT departments stand up dedicated infrastructure to support each line of business or application. Many organizations are
implementing WebSphere Portal to provide a multi-tenant capability, in which multiple applications can share infrastructure while retaining
appropriate levels of isolation and quality of service. In this presentation, the team will present a new pattern, drawn from real customer
engagements, for achieving such a multi-tenant architecture. They will show how to manipulate portal configuration to achieve JVM-level
isolation between virtual portals and discuss how customers are using this to achieve consolidation of their portal and WCM infrastructure.
They will also touch on how to operate and govern such an infrastructure, onboarding of new applications or tenants, and how to leverage
virtualization techniques to simplify management of the system. (Level: Advanced)
TECH-B24 Enterprise iPad Application: First of a Kind -- Planning, Politics, and more than a little luck
Speaker: David Saunders, Engagement Manager, Software Group Services, IBM, Alex Sanielevici, Solution Architect, ISSC, IBM
Today the iPad is ubiquitous, but how does an enterprise get started with its First-of-a-Kind iPad application -- especially when the CEO
commissions it? Join us for this example case study that tells how one organization did it. We start with the business case and the end user,
moving toward the design, development, and all the way through to a successful deployment. In spite of the executive directive, skepticism and
anxiety initially abounded due to the aggressive timeline and challenging success factors. Stakeholders who could afford to keep their distance,
did. As milestones were met, they moved in to "help," reinforcing JFK's observation "Success has a thousand fathers, but failure is an orphan."
Happily, many people were sharing in this success by the end. Planning, governance, stakeholder management, and over-communication were
keys to managing this organic, evolving program to conclusion. (Level: Introductory)
For many attendees, one of the Conference highlights is the opportunity to participate in topic-based discussions with fellow attendees and
customer, IBM partner and product team experts. To facilitate these discussions, the conference is setting aside tables for roundtable
discussions over lunch. Each day, where lunch is served, several tables will be reserved for groups of attendees with similar interests to engage
in focused conversations. The tables will be identified as a reserved table by the sign placed in the middle of the table. The sign will indicate a
topic of interest. We encourage attendees with an interest in that topic area to sit at the table and participate in the discussion. No preregistration
