The exact conception date of Detail GTMO is unknown. It developed in <strong>the</strong> embryo of homeport, gradually grow<br />

ing as names were shifted from roster to roster. It was born officially on 5 May 1971 on a landing strip on Leewar<br />

I<br />

Paint Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. It matured rapidly and quickly established a voracious appetite. It devoured <strong>the</strong> Cam<br />

Bylkeley Barracks and <strong>the</strong> laundromat as appetizers, <strong>the</strong>n finished up <strong>the</strong> main course of dredging work and <strong>the</strong> ER<br />

Club structural work. Dessert included <strong>the</strong> completion of <strong>the</strong> Security Fence Lighting project and Crane Hill. But c<br />

grealer importance was its diverse personality. It was sober by day and a drunkard at night, fiercely competitive a<br />

sports, hardworking but with an eye for parties and fun. Although conceived and named by o<strong>the</strong>rs, it was we, th<br />

men of Detail GTMO that made it live . . .<br />

on 20 May 1971, with <strong>the</strong> assignment<br />

of constructing a recreation complex<br />

at <strong>the</strong> Naval Ordnance liboratory<br />

Test Facility at Solomons, Maryland.<br />

Under <strong>the</strong> direction of Ltjg John E.<br />

Rectenwald <strong>the</strong>y completed marina<br />

buildings, a trailer park, clubhouse<br />

improvements, and <strong>the</strong> rehabilitation<br />

of several bungalows. They also<br />

worked on an exterior lighting sys-<br />

tem, performed grading and paving<br />

and completed several miscellaneous<br />

projects in <strong>the</strong>ir eight months in Ma-<br />

ryland.

Detail NEW LONDON was <strong>the</strong> smallest detachment<br />

maintained by NMCB-<strong>62</strong> during <strong>the</strong> deployment. The De-<br />

tail consisted af five Equipment Operators, a construction<br />

Mechanic, and an Equipment Operator Chief who acted<br />

as CPOIC. The Detail completed rough earthwork and<br />

landscaping in preparation for a <strong>Navy</strong> trailer park which<br />

is being built at <strong>the</strong> Submarine Base, New London, Con-<br />

necticut.<br />

The men of Detail VIEQUES were tasked with <strong>the</strong><br />

renovation of an existing observation post, <strong>the</strong> pour-<br />

ing of a large concrete bunker, <strong>the</strong> erection of two<br />

20' X 48' Baby Butler buildings end-to-end includ-<br />

ing <strong>the</strong> installation of generators, <strong>the</strong> grading of ex-<br />

isting roads and <strong>the</strong> making of new sun-in Tines into<br />

<strong>the</strong> aircraft bombing practice area. The Detail com-<br />

pleted <strong>the</strong>se tasks and many o<strong>the</strong>rs in a highly pro-<br />

fessional manner. Most of <strong>the</strong> work was performed<br />

atop Cerro Matias mountain on Vieques Island situa-<br />

ted about nine miles sou<strong>the</strong>ast of RooseveIt Roads<br />

Naval Station, Puerto Rico.<br />

Detail CULEBRA, under <strong>the</strong> command of LT Don<br />

ald R. Keith, performed many tasks. Among <strong>the</strong> biggen<br />

accomplishments were <strong>the</strong> completion of interior work<br />

an a 4.0' X 100' pre-engineered building, <strong>the</strong> pouring<br />

of 700' of concrete ribbon roadway, and <strong>the</strong> erection ol<br />

5000' of chain link fence. The Detail also performed<br />

grading work on existing, civilian dirt roads and grading<br />

of a baseball field for <strong>the</strong> young men of Culebra Island.<br />

The island is situated about fifteen miles east of Roosevelt<br />

Roads Naval Station, Puerto Rico.

<strong>Seabee</strong> Team <strong>62</strong>02, under <strong>the</strong> di-<br />

rection of LTJG Dayid L. Burrus, de-<br />

ployed in May 1971 to Ham Tan in<br />

<strong>the</strong> Binh Tuy Province of South Viet-<br />

nam. They completed fourteen major<br />

projects including a 2.5 km road con-<br />

sisting of 9,500 cubic yards of later-<br />

ite EilI, a two room school, a dispen-<br />

sary, and a village power distribution<br />

system. Their excellent performance<br />

won <strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong> Best Type "E" for Sea-<br />

bee teams in Vietnam.<br />

Thirteen <strong>Seabee</strong>s including one Hospitalman and one<br />

C.E.C. Officer deployed to <strong>the</strong> ,island of Yap in <strong>the</strong><br />

Trust Territories of <strong>the</strong> Pacific Islands as <strong>Seabee</strong> Team<br />

<strong>62</strong>07. The Team worked on <strong>the</strong> upgrading of <strong>the</strong> Sea-<br />

bee Camp and several civic action projects including<br />

<strong>the</strong> building of culverts, one bridge, a two ward dispen-<br />

sary, a school house for <strong>the</strong> natives of Lornotrek,<br />

houses for <strong>the</strong> Yapese and several o<strong>the</strong>r projects.<br />

The Team received gifts from <strong>the</strong> natives as tokens<br />

of <strong>the</strong>ir gratitude for <strong>the</strong> work performed by <strong>Seabee</strong><br />

Team <strong>62</strong>07.<br />
