HOTEONE Text:
B.Soltani
ich hin will.
Wechselnd. Also ich hab
will.
HOTE DORTMUND
He discovered graffiti in the mid-1980s and started to write the name
HOTE. Almost 20 years later, he is back again on the streets and also very
busy on the World Wide Web. Here is an excerpt from our conversation with
a real Ruhrpottguy:
This is all a very long time ago and I don’t know all this so well anymore. How
it began and all that. It took me quite some time until I knew what I wanted. I
always wonder how people can remember everything that has happened.
What do you mean? Did you read the book of Fuzz One? I don’t understand
how he could remember everything. There are lists of all the snacks, which he
ate. He listed food for almost every day. But that’s probably the only way to fill
a book.
Have you always written the same name? Not always. I’ve started with Hote,
then I wrote a lot of different names and used my original name only for legal
graffiti. I always came back to it.
Today you paint your original name illegally again, perhaps because it
doesn’t matter to you anymore? It doesn’t matter? I don’t know, I just do it.
Do you paint continuously since the mid-1980s? Yes. I always tag. It is my
addiction I can’t live without. If it comes to piecing there are phases. Sometimes I
don’t want to, but if I can tag, then I do. I don’t care how, when or where and if it
is only with my finger somewhere in the rubber on the subway.
How come that you almost never do a piece? Mainly it is the motivation. It
takes too much time and I don’t like that. You need to make sketches or you always
paint the same piece, which I also don’t want to do. For me, painting a piece
is labour because I want it to look different from the one before. You need a lot of
paint and you need a wall. Then I don’t want to do a piece, which gets crossed out
with a chrome line the next day. That seems to be a common thing nowadays. In
the 80s that didn’t matter because the cans were stolen but today you pay a serious
amount of money for it. In the end, I usually feel it’s not worth it and I like to
paint spots where there wasn’t anything before. And those places are rare.
HOTE DORTMUND
Zeit rein investieren.
also zu schwarz/weiss T-Ups?
Man findet wieder
Nach New York,
Back then you painted trains. Do you only paint walls nowadays?Today it is
much easier to do a wall. It is less complicated then a train. Before it was so simple
to hit the trains. You just went there and did it. Today you need much more time.
You must be really after it. Back then you just went to the station the next day and
you could in any case be sure that the train pulled in. Today you don’t even know
where it goes. Well, and there is also the risk.
Is a train still more prestigious for you than a wall? Yeah! It’s much cooler
when it rolls. Absolutely. But I also think a wall on the right spot is great.
Nowadays we almost see exclusively black/white t-ups from you. What
happened to your colourpieces? I really love trends, for example scratching and
all sorts of new markers. I am really sensitive to it. They invent something new
and then I use it until I know how to handle it. Doing throw-ups is somehow like
tagging. Your arm is swinging and something appears. It is very similar to tagging
and very quickly done.
Are you also infected by the new wave that has taken on all of Europe? Yes.
In my head, throw-ups only belonged to big cities where there were shutters. New
York, Amsterdam or Paris. But somehow they also look nice here.
Are tags more important for you or is it just a sidedish? Or is it an automatism?
When it comes to tagging the process of doing it is the best. You spray and
there it is. I also like to read my name. I would love to see it every 2 meters.
You tag two different crews. First, let’s talk about the older crew: WRL. Are
there any other guys writing it today or are you the only one? The crew is still
out there, but we don’t often paint together. We all live in different places and we
all haven’t got much time. When we were teenagers it was different, because you
had an infinite amount of leisure time. I am also a spontaneous person and sometimes
I just decide to go out bombing. In such a situation I don’t like to make
appointments and wait for anybody. All in all I scarcely write WRL.
zusammen.
Damit man weiss wo
man herkommt.
Man
sieht dann praktisch wer wohin gehört. So eine Ordnung halt. Für mich sind es
wirklich einfach nur 3 Buchstaben. Graffiti halt.
Was meinst du,
Keine Ahnung.
negativen Effekt. Kann ich nichts mehr mit anfangen.
GRAFFITI MAGAZINE ISSUE 12
But you’re doing it. Yes, it just happens. A part of the game. Just to let people
know where I come from.
How come that you are now a member of the IFC crew? I’ve been hanging
out with those guys pretty much these days. But a crew for me is just the three
letters next to your tag. Who belongs where. As an order. For me, it is really only
3 simple letters. Graffiti. I probably do it only because I learned it that way. As I
said, a part of the game.
In one of the last issues of Backspin magazine was an interview with two
founding members of the IFC and you could read that drinking and bombing
in your crew often belong together. Yes, but no problem for me. Usually I’m
alone and sober on the road.
Many of your old boys, with whom you started out, drifted away. Almost
all of them.
Drugs and the related crimes. What do you think is the reason that you’re
not into those things now? Maybe because I knew what kind of shit that is. You
can see that everywhere.
But they knew this, too, didn’t they? Yes, most likely. Perhaps because I am
not prone to such stuff. No idea. Well, I like to drink and had my spliff times. But
if I now would have a smoke, it would only have a negative effect. It’s not my cup
of tea anymore.
Are you still in contact with those guys? Sometimes. There are some who
stopped taking drugs and started to paint again. Writing scarcely happens together
because we all live in different places and most of them have to work. Let me
put it this way: Each of us has his own area.
GRAFFITI MAGAZINE ISSUE 12
Hast du noch Kontakt zu den Jungs? Teilweise.
Nee,
warum auch? Ich bekomme da alles was ich brauche.
An Informationen? Sprich verfolgst du wirklich was so graffititechnisch
weltweit passiert?
malt man denn?
6 GRAFFITI MAGAZINE ISSUE 12
You belong to the older generation of graffiti-writers. In comparison to
many others you are pretty active on the Internet. On Street Files, you’ve got
two Fotologs…Myspace ...
Obviously you don’t see the Internet as the source of all evil? No, why
should I? I get there everything I need.
Information? Do you check what’s going on all over the world graffitiwise?
Yes, sure.
But for this you don’t need to create multiple accounts on different graffiti
platforms. Before the interview I had the fear that we might not get exclusive
stuff from you, because everything is already on the internet, even the very
old stuff. The main thing is, you find your old material and you can download it.
I have hardly any stuff of myself. The internet is useful.
Didn’t you take your own flicks back then? Of course I did. But I had piles
of photo albums at home and then I sold some of them, because I did not know
where to put the stuff, which of course I now regret. Then I had a number of
house raids and the guys from the evidence room gave my stuff to other people.
That way a lot of my flicks disappeared.
I pretty much understand the idea behind finding your old flicks on the
internet but I don’t understand to upload every t-up or tag? Many find that
whack because they only paint for themselves. Yes but why do you paint? It is
about fame! Otherwise, you might even paint in your basement, where nobody
sees it! On the internet, some see it and think to themselves: “Hey, I know this
guy and I’ve got some stuff of him too!” I also try to kick other people’s asses to
make them upload their stuff. People from the past, who still have photos. The
stuff that nobody else sees otherwise. I also pretty much enjoy to see things that
I had already forgotten.
Du bist also immer
noch Fan? Ja, klar! Ich will halt aufsaugen.
Blackbook?
eigentlich immer. Das Interesse ist immer da. Und das taggen eh. Ohne Taggen
geht’s nicht!
Graffiti doesn’t really seem to be boring to you. Are you still a fan? Yes, of
course! I want to absorb. I still find it very interesting! If you are bombing yourself,
you are evolving constantly and as long as there is change it’s good.
Although there are people who have been painting the same piece for years.
I think that’s boring. Some people are afraid to paint a poor piece and then they
would have to live with it. They rather stick to what they know. There are also
many people who paint pieces and fuck a few parts up, but at least they’ve tried
something new. The only way to learn.
Some say sketching helps. Do you have a Blackbook in its traditional sense?
No, I never had. Before and still today I rip out my sketches and take them to
bomb. I don’t like it but you always have to hide everything. I have to hide all
my photos and all the other stuff. The memory sticks you have to hide and you
have to be careful that you do not have anything at home. This is terror and partly
really annoying. Today, graffiti is far more stressful than in the past. It used to be
far more adventurous. Today I don’t want to be caught, so that I can still paint
tomorrow. Previously, nothing really mattered. Back then I didn’t know so much,
now I have somehow seen almost everything. Although there are still some really
funny stories happening.
So you still see a future as a graffiti-writer? I don’t know. It may be that I don’t
enjoy it anymore tomorrow. And then I start to like it again and the circle is renewed.
It‘s always in my head. The interest is always there as well as the tendency
to tag my name up. I can’t live without tagging!
