choir.at.a.national.performance..Others.have.heard.about.one.of.the.innovative.programs,.such.as.Advanced.Competitive.Science,.that.we.offer..And.several.have.been. 

inspired.by.our.incredible.service-learning.program..I.am.sometimes.amazed.at.the. 

national.reputation.we.have.established.in.the.Catholic.school.community..It.makes. 

me.very.proud.to.introduce.myself.as.the.President.of.Benilde-St..Margaret’s.School,. 

and.I.believe.it.is.a.gift.from.God.to.work.in.this.wonderful.community.

2013 Red Knight Baseball

A Tradition and History 

. Benilde-St..Margaret’s.School.has.an.enduring.and. 

fascinating.history.that.spans.an.entire.century..The.foundation.from.the.past.is.the.center.of.today’s.educational. 

future. 

. In.1907,.the.Sisters.of.St..Joseph.of.Carondelet. 

founded.St..Margaret’s.Academy..The.original.school.was. 

located.near.the.Basilica.of.St..Mary.in.downtown.Minneapolis..It.included.two.mansions.and.a.carriage.house. 

built.in.the.1880s..Loaded.with.charm,.the.school.featured. 

winding.staircases,.a.ballroom,.and.a.fireplace.in.every. 

classroom. 

. The.school.gained.such.popularity.that.by.1959,.200. 

students.were.turned.away.for.every.100.accepted..Due. 

to.the.demand,.the.Sisters.had.the.foresight.to.build.a.new. 

school.on.28.acres.of.land.previously.purchased.on.Upton. 

Avenue,.near.the.Eloise.Butler.Wildflower.Gardens.and. 

Wirth.Park. 

. Meanwhile,.the.Christian.Brothers.were.simultaneously.building.a.new.school.for.boys,.called.Benilde.High. 

School,.in.St..Louis.Park..Brother.Mark.Sullivan.opened. 

the.doors.to.Benilde.in.1956..Both.schools.prospered.and. 

functioned.until.enrollment.declined.in.the.1970s,.as.costs. 

escalated. 

. Facing.the.departure.of.the.Brothers.in.1970.and.the. 

prospect.of.the.school.closing,.parents,.students,.and. 

staff.went.to.great.lengths.to.keep.it.open..Prayers.were. 

answered.and.their.efforts.rewarded.as.the.Benedictine. 

Community.of.St..John’s.Abbey.agreed.to.provide.faculty. 

members.and.an.administrator. 

. In.1974,.the.St..Margaret’s.facility.was.sold.to.the.Minneapolis.school.system,.and.the.merged. 

Benilde-St..Margaret’s.High.School.opened.its.door.at. 

the.former.Benilde.High.School.site..One.hundred.ninety. 

students.graduated.in.its.first.class.

. In.1989,.a.junior.high.was.added,.and.one.hundred. 

seventh.and.eighth.graders.helped.to.move.BSM.into.a. 

new.era.of.education.in.the.1990s. 

. In.2000,.an.aggressive.capital.campaign.entitled.“Enriching.Our.Legacy.of.Excellence”.was.begun.under.the.leadership.of.James.F..Hamburge..As.part.of.this.one-anda-half-year.project,.a.new.chapel,.library,.classroom.wing,. 

performing.arts.center,.and.both.senior.and.junior.high. 

administrative.office.spaces.were.built. 

. Dr..Bob.Tift.took.the.reigns.as.president.in.2002,.after. 

serving.as.interim.president.for.one.year..He.helped.BSM. 

embark.on.its.next.campaign,.officially.started.in.2008.— 

Raise.the.Red. 

. Raise.the.Red.is.responsible.for.the.new.athletic.complex,.which.made.its.debut.in.the.fall.of.2010..The.athletics. 

fields.project.included.an.artificial.turf.stadium.in.a.more. 

centralized.position,.a.gatehouse.with.restrooms,.upgraded.track.and.field.facilities,.renovated.baseball.and.softball. 

fields,.improved.practice.fields,.consolidated.wetlands. 

(improving.their.environmental.integrity).and.increased. 

parking. 

. Today,.BSM.is.a.strong.and.viable.school.that.serves. 

over.1,200.students.in.grades.seven.through.12. 

Catholic Tradition, Excellence and Innovation 

. Balance.in.life.is.important..Catholic.teaching.frames. 

the.balance.of.school.and.family,.tradition.and.innovation,. 

academics.and.activities,.passion.and.mission,.and.independence.and.community. 

. Benilde-St..Margaret’s.provides.a.caring.environment.

. When.asked.about.the.the.2013.season,.Benilde- 

St..Margaret’s.head.coach.Greg.Hoemke.said.“I.really. 

don’t.know.what.to.say..We.just.have.a.lot.of.unanswered. 

spots.” 

. With.just.four.seniors.and.seven.returning.players,.the. 

Red.Knights.are.short.on.experience..How.the.newcomers. 

to.the.lineup.fare.will.determine.much.of.the.teams’.fate. 

. The.team’s.seven.returning.players.combined.to.bat. 

.349.last.season.and.speed.should.not.be.an.issue.with. 

the.likes.of.Dan.Labosky,.Sam.Lynch.and.Keaton.Studsrud. 

at.the.top.of.the.lineup. 

PITCHERS 

. The.BSM.pitching.staff.is.woefully.lacking.in.the.area. 

of.experience.as.just.three.returning.pitchers.saw.time.on. 

the.mound.last.season.for.a.combined.14.1.innings. 

. Leading.that.trio.is.junior.Mikey.McGill,.who.worked. 

10.innings.in.five.relief.appearances.last.season..Although. 

walking.seven.and.allowing.eight.hits,.he.only.allowed.two. 

runs,.neither.of.which.was.earned. 

. Dan.Labosky.made.three.appearances,.which.covered. 

2.1.innings..He.picked.up.a.save.and.fanned.three.batters. 

. John.Backes.made.one.relief.appearance.in.2012,. 

tossing.two.scoreless.innings. 

. With.Labosky.and.Backes,.the.only.seniors.on.the. 

staff,.scheduled.to.come.out.of.the.bullpen.this.season,.the. 

starting.staff.will.come.from.the.junior.class. 

. Besides.McGill,.three.other.players.who.saw.action. 

with.the.Chester.Bird.legion.team.will.vie.for.a.spot.on.the. 

starting.staff. 

. Michael.Kaminski.heads.that.list.and.working.14.innings.last.summer.for.The.Birds.in.three.appearances.. 

Jimmy.Cron.and.Marshall.Hoemke.also.started.games.for. 

Chester.Bird.and.Dunham.DeRemer.joins.the.group.of.juniors.who.are.expected.to.see.the.majority.of.the.innings. 

. “We.will.have.to.wait.and.see.who.will.emerge.to.take. 

those.spots,”.Hoemke.said..“For.our.staff.to.be.successful. 

this.year,.we.need.to.throw.strikes.more.than.ever.
