Welcome to Champneys International College of Health & Beauty.
As you read through our prospectus, I hope you will gain some understanding of just what it is that
sets us apart from other colleges. The College, set within the Resort’s beautiful grounds at Tring,
offers an unrivalled introduction to an international career in Beauty Therapy.

Our courses form a demanding but highly enjoyable introduction to a fulfilling and extremely

Founded in 1976, Champneys International College of Health & Beauty is recognised as one of the
world’s leading Beauty Therapy training centres. The training we offer is unique and our international
reputation attracts students from all countries of the world. The College is noted for an all-round

Champneys International College of Health & Beauty is accredited by the British Accreditation
Council (BAC).

CIDESCO and CIBTAC Beauty Therapy Diploma Course – 11 months
Our full-time, eleven-month course commencing in September, is extremely comprehensive and
leads to both the Confederation of Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology (CIBTAC) and the coveted
and internationally recognised CIDESCO qualification (Comité International D’esthétique et de
Cosmetologie).
The intensive CIDESCO course covers CIBTAC Diploma in Aesthetic Treatments (Beauty Therapy
Services and Electrical Treatments), CIBTAC Diploma in Body Therapy Treatments as well as
Champneys Diploma in Aromatherapy, Champneys Diploma in Indian Head Massage and Hot
Stone Treatment. In less than a year, successful graduates are employable in both the UK and
abroad and can begin to recoup their training costs.
The 45 week CIBTAC and CIDESCO Diploma Course covers every aspect of Beauty Therapy.
Students receive a minimum of 1,350 hours full-time training. The CIDESCO diploma is awarded to
successful graduates on completion of the training course followed by 600 hours of Beauty Therapy
employment, undertaken anywhere in the world. As a result, all CIDESCO diploma holders have
sound commercial experience as well as an excellent training.
CIBTAC completes in May and provides comprehensive training as a Beautician, Body Therapist,
and Aromatherapist. After which additional qualifications cover Indian Head Massage, Hot Stone
Treatment, together with the CIDESCO Diploma in August.
College hours are 9.30am to 5.15pm, Monday to Thursday, with an earlier finish on Fridays.
‘New Horizons’ – 8 month CIBTAC Diploma Course
Champneys College will help you discover the potential you never knew you had. Learning a new
skill is exciting and interesting and opens up different possibilities. Champneys College has
designed a course in Beauty Therapy to work around mothers with school children and others who
need to combine studying with other commitments.
Course places may be limited as priority is given to local applicants.
The New Horizons course begins in September each year and ends in May. Holidays are timed to
coincide with local (Hertfordshire) school terms. The hours are 9.30am to 2.30pm, Monday,
Tuesday and Friday with an earlier finish at 1.30pm on a Wednesday and Thursday.
The CIBTAC Course (Confederation of International Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology) includes
CIBTAC Diploma in Aesthetic Treatments (Beauty Therapy Services and Electrical Treatments) and
CIBTAC Diploma in Body Therapy Treatments.
For those who wish to train for only part of the week, you can study CIBTAC Diploma in Aesthetic
Treatments, (Facial work, Manicure, Pedicure and Waxing) – 3 days a week or CIBTAC Diploma in
Body Therapy Treatments – 2 days a week (with some additional hours of study each Monday until
mid November).
The Champneys Diploma in Aromatherapy can be added as an extra qualification. Class times are
2.00pm - 5.15pm one afternoon a week, from September until May or June. (Some additional
hours of study will be required).
The Training
The training is approximately one-third theory, two-thirds practise. Regular class tests and ongoing
assessments will monitor your progress. Students will practise the basic techniques on each other
and must therefore be prepared to undergo any treatment themselves. Having reached the required
level of expertise, they will work regularly on Champneys College clients, giving invaluable practical
experience over a range of treatments for all age groups.
Champneys College operates an Equal Opportunities Policy.
Home Study
All students are required to complete at least 2 hours of home revision per evening.
For those enrolled on the CIDESCO course a specialised project for the CIDESCO examination, in
addition to the routine homework / assignments and revision.
Accommodation
The College has a limited established register of accommodation, details of which are sent to
prospective students shortly before each course begins. Details of local estate agents are also
available.

• There may be an opportunity for one week of work experience (CIDESCO course only) to take

Indian Head Massage and Hot Stone Treatment may also be studied after the completion of the

Student Welfare
Guidance, Support and Advice
The College course is highly enjoyable, but also extremely challenging. Student problems naturally
arise which need to be faced and overcome as part of the learning process.
The College team have a keen awareness of student problems and can deal with most concerns as
and when they arise. The Senior Tutor and the Principal are always available to offer
encouragement, guidance and advice.

Qualifications Required
One of the great advantages of a career in Beauty Therapy is that it is possible to embark upon it at
any age. Students of school leaving age are expected to have achieved a reasonable academic
standard. Relevant subjects may include Biology, Physical Education, English, Food and Nutrition,
Science or Art and Craft. In the case of mature students who may have followed a different
educational path, previous experience and vocational training are considered alongside academic
qualifications.
Students are able to become members of BABTAC (British Association of Beauty Therapy and
Cosmetology). Once qualified, membership is upgraded to full status with over one million pounds
professional indemnity cover. Please ask for details.

The Training Programme
CIBTAC Diploma in Aesthetic Treatments (Beauty Therapy Services and Electrical Treatments)
Facial Anatomy: To include the skull, the skin, facial muscles, blood vessels of the face, facial
nerves etc.
Skin Treatments: Skin analysis, correct choice of products and treatments. Theory and practise of
cleansing and toning. Eyebrow shaping, eyelash and eyebrow tinting. Facial massage and mask
therapy.
Make up: Colour choice, application , techniques for day time, evening and corrective make up. A
one day workshop by a well known make-up artist/company is timetabled. (CIDESCO only).
Electrotherapy Treatments
Facial Steaming: Hydrating and deep cleansing.
High Frequency: Stimulating and nourishing.
Galvanic: Iontophoresis for balancing and Desincrustation for deep cleansing.
Vacuum Suction: To improve circulation.
Faradic Muscle Treatment: To firm and tone facial muscles.
Manicure and Pedicure
Structure of the nail, nail shaping, cuticle care, massage and enamel application. Specialised
manicures and pedicures with hot oil and paraffin wax.
Depilation
Semi-permanent hair removal; waxing and other semi-permanent hair removal techniques.
CIBTAC Diploma in Body Therapy Treatments
Anatomy and Physiology: An enlightening study of the systems of the body.
Body Massage: Swedish body massage techniques: Including figure diagnosis with emphasis on
client care.
Diet and Nutrition: Understanding healthy eating and weight control.
Body Electrotherapy
Faradic Muscle Stimulation: To firm and tone muscles.
Vacuum Suction: Detoxifying and improving circulation.
Gyratory Massage: For relieving muscular tension.
Body Galvanic: For reducing cellulite.
Exercise
Students learn to give general advice to the client on basic forms of exercise. (CIDESCO only)
Heat Treatments
Sauna, steam bath, paraffin wax, infrared and ultra-violet light.

Champneys Diploma in Aromatherapy:
In-depth consultation and use of pre-blended essential oils for prescriptive purposes. Specialised
massage techniques including pressure points, neuro-muscular and Swedish massage.
Champneys Diploma in Indian Head Massage:
A practical application of an ancient form of massage to release stress and tension
Champneys College Diploma in Hot Stone Treatment:
A relaxing treatment using soothing massage techniques in conjunction with warm and/or cold
basalt stones.
Postgraduate CIDESCO Aromatherapy course is an additional option for students enrolled on the
CIDESCO Course (Champneys Diploma in Aromatherapy is a pre-requisite).

Careers Information
A therapist must be caring, tactful, intelligent and have a well groomed appearance. There are six
main categories of work within the beauty industry, however, the list of possible careers is endless.
A Beauty Therapist or Aesthetician
A qualified Beautician and Body Therapist, able to carry out a range of treatments to the face and
body.
Treatments include:
• Facial treatments to improve skin care and condition
• Make-up
• Manicure and pedicure
• Waxing
• Body treatments / wraps
• Body massage
• Dietary advice, nutrition and exercise
• Facial electrotherapy
• Body electrotherapy
• Treatments to promote a feeling of well being
• May be trained in other therapies i.e. Aromatherapy, Electrolysis, Reflexology, Indian Head
Massage, Hot Stone Treatment.
A Beauty Consultant
Works for a cosmetic manufacturer, selling a particular branded product, usually in large
departmental stores.
A Beautician
Specialises in:
• Skin care
• Manicure and pedicure
• Make-up
• Waxing
• Facial treatments

An Electrolysist
Specialises in the permanent removal of unwanted hair, generally on the face and other parts of the
body. Electrolysis is also known as electrical epilation.
A Body Therapist
Is able to provide a full range of body treatments.
• Manual treatments i.e. Massage
• Electrotherapy which aids figure control
• Figure diagnosis and corrective techniques to improve condition and shape
• Body wraps
A Masseuse
Carries out body massage only, usually Swedish Massage but can develop with postgraduate
courses to include:
• Aromatherapy
• Orthopaedic massage
• Sports massage
• Plus others
Post graduate training enables therapists to widen their treatment range or specialise in a particular
area.
Post Graduate Careers include:
Aromatherapy
A specialised massage using blended essential oils.
Reflexology
The ancient art of foot massage to restore and maintain the body’s own natural balance.
Indian Head Massage
An ancient Indian massage technique, which relieves stress and tension found in the scalp,
shoulders, neck and face.
Hot Stone Treatments
A relaxing treatment using soothing massage techniques in conjunction with warm and/or cold
basalt stones.
Reiki
The simplest and most natural method of healing
Sports Massage
A massage specifically developed for working on sports injuries.
The growing interest in feeling fit and looking good has created a growth in opportunities for Beauty
Therapists.
There is a fairly rapid turnover in jobs and it is possible to reach supervisory or management level
within two or three years after qualifying.
The majority of qualified Beauty Therapists work either in salons, health resorts and Day Spas such
as The Champneys Group.

Other opportunities include working in sports clubs, therapy clinics, department stores,
clubs, airline companies (both in the air and on the ground) and hotels.
There are limited opportunities to work on ocean liners, in film and television.
With experience comes the opportunity to pass on your skills and knowledge as a trainer or tutor. A
Further and Adult Education Teaching certificate will be required for a tutoring /teaching position.
Champneys trained Aestheticians and Therapists are regarded as exceptionally professional
and highly qualified, and therefore able to access the most prestigious employment
opportunities available in the world.
Guidelines on Qualifications
There is no single examining body in Beauty Therapy, it is important therefore, that students ensure
the course chosen leads to examination approved by one of the following organisations:
C.I.B.T.A.C: Confederation of International Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology
Therapy and Cosmetology, is the examining body for the British Association of Beauty Therapy and
Cosmetology (BABTAC).
Recognised in 26 countries
C.I.D.E.S.C.O: (Comite International d’Esthétique et de Cosmetologie) is a world-wide organisation
with a more in-depth syllabus. Each training school must provide a minimum of 2 additional therapy
skills of their choice.
Recognised in over 27 countries world wide.
• City and Guilds (C&G)
• Edexcel BTEC and Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA), which offer both national and higher
national awards.
• International Therapy Examination Council (ITEC)
• International Health & Beauty Council (IHBC)
• Vocational Training Charitable Trust (VTCT)
• National Vocational Qualification (NVQ)
It is more usual to find Colleges of Further Education offering a range of Edexcel BTEC
SQA, C&G, NVQ and IHBC awards, whereas the private colleges will be geared to CIDESCO and
CIBTAC examinations or possibly ITEC.
Most people train by taking part-time courses at a College of Further Education or in a private
school, with a good reputation in examination success.
The minimum age of entry is 16 years. Private colleges tend to have students of a wider age range,
as Beauty Therapy is a career where maturity can be an advantage. Courses at private colleges
tend to be full time, shorter and more intensive.
