The Madame Alexander Doll Company
The fi rst doll hospital in New York City was owned by Maurice Alexander, Madame Alexander’s father. He
repaired broken dolls and sold new ones as well as fi ne porcelain pieces. Madame grew up seeing the joy that
dolls brought to children. Madame and her sisters began making cloth dolls, and their business shortly outgrew
their homes. Madame and her husband, Phillip Behrman, started manufacturing dolls in New York City
in 1923. Through the years the Alexander Company made exquisite composition and cloth dolls. Hard plastic
became available in 1948, and some of the most highly sought after dolls were made during the 1950s. Madame
was inspired by literature, fi lms, plays, fashion, celebrities, history, art, and foreign countries. This golden era
produced the Coronation Set, Glamour Girls, Me and My Shadow series, Beaux Arts, Bible characters, 8"
Wendy, Cissy, Lissy, Elise, Cissette, and many more.
The Alexander Company continues to be an award-winning company under the leadership of president Gale
Jarvis. The company produces a complete line of dolls from high fashion dolls for the discriminating collector
to play dolls for children. The Alexander Company added 12" Lissy to the 2006 fall line. Lissy was made originally
from 1956 to 1967 which makes this year her fi ftieth birthday. President Gale Jarvis and the Alexander
Company continue to bring joy to children and adults with their creations.
The Alexander Company is keenly interested in collectors and all areas of collecting. Collectors may contact
the Alexander Company and arrange for tours of the Hermitage Gallery where a wide assortment of vintage
dolls may be seen. The company also hosts tours of the factory, showroom, doll hospital, and factory store. The
Alexander Company is located at 615 West 131st Street, New York City. The company has been located in the
same building since the 1950s. I assure you that there is no more exciting place for Alexander collectors to be
than the Madame Alexander Doll factory!
leg walker, mint in original
1966 – 1972. Her clothes are
dingy and shelf worn. Elastic
Marme (left) is worth $50.00.
What Is a Price Guide?
Price guides must be based upon values for a perfect doll, since all collectors need accurate prices for insurance
purposes. Insurance companies and postal services must have a way to determine the value of a damaged or
stolen doll. Collectors must also have a way to appraise and insure their collections. A price guide, while not the
fi nal word, is a starting point to determine the value of a doll. The prices listed are for perfect dolls. Imperfect
dolls will bring considerably less than exceptional dolls, which collectors call “tissue mint.” Original boxes are
important because the information on the box helps determine the age and manufacturer of the doll. The prices
quoted are for dolls without their boxes, prior to 1972. Prices for dolls from 1973 to present are for dolls with
their original boxes. Prices of these dolls would be adjusted lower if they are missing their boxes. Boxes can be
a fi re hazard. It is possible to fold most boxes and store them inside a larger box and place the boxes in an airy,
dry room. Collectors will pay a higher price for a doll in its original box. Beware of storing dolls for a long time
in their boxes — clothing, wigs, and vinyl can fade or change colors. Also, vinyl dolls tend to become greasy or
sticky when stored in their boxes.
