Technical optimisation
Improving safety and saving money of
coupling operation: that’s what we do
Schwab tow couplers have transformed manual screwing into a
safe and cost–saving connection
The tough competition in the railway industry is forcing operators to continuously
set higher quality and comfort standards. By introducing a
clock face schedule and/or reopening local line, the use of additional
trains at peak demands is not appropriated and often not compatible
with regular headways. One solution is to use a Multiple Unit (MU) with
an automatic coupler, which offers a full operational flexibility. Many
operators are still using MU’s equipped with screw couplers which increase
the costs and the operating time compared to an automatic coupling
system, due to the manned operations. The dilemma for the operator
is that, because of the construction of the car body, the screw coupling
cannot be substituted with an automatic coupling, and the operation
costs of a new MU are pushing the budget too much.
Domino tow coupling system
Schwab Verkehrstechnik AG can now respond to this need by providing
an automatic tow coupling which replaces the screw coupling.Coaches
can be connected by means of the tow coupler at the same time mechanically,
electrically and pneumatically, which saves operation time and
increases the reliability. The coupling principle consists of transmitting
the tensile forces over the draw gear in the middle, while side buffers
convey the compression forces. Both free – stroke and tensioning devices
are included in the coupler.Another unique feature of the Schwab
coupling is its ability to allow a soft coupling operation on straight trakks
as well as in curves by shifting the coupler head out over the buffer line.
Once mechanically coupled, the tow coupler is drawn right behind
the surface of the side buffers and firmly tightened. Coupling operation
can be carried out at very low speeds, which is highly appreciated by the
train driver and increases passenger comfort. The free – stroke and tensioning
devices are driven by the compressed air of the feed pipe. They
Conventional draw hook system
are triggered by a control unit placed
below the car body right behind
the rail guard.
As system provider, Schwab
Verkehrstechnik AG also delivers
the buffers with synthetic insertions
and the draw gears.
Buffer + with automated
grease lubrication
Focus
Product
The new self – greasing buffer + lubricates its own head as long as up to 12 months.
Manual re-lubrication during this period of time is no longer needed. Additionally, this contributes towards reducing
the friction and preventing from formation of riffs. Life service of the Buffer + is greatly increased thanks
to the reduction of the wear and to an improved gliding behaviour. The lubricant dispenser can be filled up with
different types of lubricants. Schwab Verkehrstechnik AG is able to check the different types of grease according
to a reliable functioning of the lubricant dispenser.
Schwab Gas – hydraulic
Our proven technology, now compliant to EN 15227
The hydraulic is equipped with an overload protection as a return stroke
damper as well. The hydraulic can be customised according to the specified
coupling speeds and to the vehicle masses thanks to the variable
orifice.
