EDIFACT Fundamentals
Introduction to the EDI Standard UN/EDIFACT

This course introduces to the principles and the structure of EDI standards, using
UN/EDIFACT (United Nations Directories for Electronic Data Interchange for Administration,
Commerce and Transport).
The UN/EDIFACT EDI standard describes a standardised representation of business
documents to permit the electronic interchange of information such as orders and invoices
between business data processing applications. UN/EDIFACT has been developed and
maintained by international bodies, is independent of specific industries, and is now in
widespread use. Beside UN/EDIFACT there is a multitude of other EDI standards, based on
EDIFACT, but restricted to specific industrial areas or regions (like Odette, the standard of the
European Automotive Industry).
The course provides an overview of the evaluation, application, advantages and weaknesses
of the business standard. Considerable attention is devoted to practical exercises as well as to
the structure of the standard.
