Helmets and gloves fl ew off as the
buzzer rang at the end of the Bantams’
gold game. Th e rink was a blur of blue
and white piling into a celebratory dog
pile as the stands went wild.
Th e NWT Bantams have won the gold
ulu.
No 15-year-old boy could ask for a better
birthday present. Hay River’s Gavin
Broadhead played hard to earn his
present this year, winning the gold the
evening before his 15th birthday.
Also on the team were fi rst-time AWGer
Carter Hill, and guardian of the winning
net, Connor Goudreau.
Th e parents of the three athletes were
beaming with pride as the score rose to
7-1 toward the end of the game against
silver-medallists Nunavut.
“Th is is the fi rst AWG for some boys,
and the last for some others,” said Curtis
Broadheaad, Gavin’s father.
“Th ey’re very lucky to be taking home
the gold.”
“We are very proud parents,” said Tracy
Hill, Carter’s mother.
“We haven’t got to spend much time
with him. It’s important that he bonds
with his team. He’s pretty pumped, and a
bit overwhelmed I think. But he says he
doesn’t want it to end, he doesn’t want to
go home.”
Hill explained that in Carter’s athlete’s
profi le, he says his goal is to go home
with a gold ulu.
“He is going to be so happy,” she said.
said the tournament could have gone in
any direction.
“It was anybody’s medal,” she said.
“Th e whole Bantam hockey tournament
has been so up and
down, so our boys have
done well to come together
and win this thing.”
“I think this will make
a good nucleus for the
Canada Games team.”
Although the boys were
able to keep a comfortable
lead on Nunavut, the game
against Alberta that got
them to the fi nals was tense.
“Th e Alberta game was
like the gold medal game in
the Olympics,” said Carleton.
“It was intense.”
Alberta had been ahead
for most of the game, until NWT got it
together and brought it up to a 3-3 tie in
the fi nal two minutes of the game. Th e
game fl ipped over into overtime, when
NWT scored the goal that got them to
the gold game.
“Alberta is such a strong team, so to be
able to beat them is very exciting,” said
Broadhead.
Gavin was more than ecstatic to win
the gold. Th is is his fi rst ulu, as the boys
came in fourth last time out in the 2008
AWG.
“Th e Alberta game was tough,” he said.
“Th e NWT almost never beats Alberta.”
But Alberta was an obstacle that could
not get in the way of the NWT’s gold
medal.
“We were worn out completely,” said
Gavin.
“Th ere was nothing left in us by the
end, but we did it.”
Carter was fortunate enough to win a
gold ulu at his fi rst ever AWG.
“I knew we had a chance,” he said.
“We did really good. I’m really excited.”
Connor kept a tight ship over at his
net, but for him, it was just business as
usual.
“I just did what I usually do,” he said.
“Being consistent is the key.”
Th is was Connor’s fi rst medal, as well.
Th e NWT junior girls came close to a
bronze medal, but gave it up to Alaska in
the fi nal period of the game.
Olga Aviugana and Jasmine Marshall
were Hay River’s token female hockey
players for the tournament.
“It was tough,” said Olga.
“We could have beat them. Th ey just
had some lucky shots,” said Jasmine slyly
as the Alaska team walked behind her.
Coach Floyd Daniels, usually a Hay
River Midget coach, said the girls were
disappointed aft er their loss.
“Th ey beat Nunavut, and were close in
another game, so this was probably their
worst game,” he said.
“Th e four-on-four is what killed us.”
“Th e Game are a good way for us to
build up for future tournaments,” said
Olga on a positive note.
Th e Midgets, featuring Ben
Squirrell, were out of the
race to the ulus by Wednesday.
Th ey sit in fi ft h place.
Coach Shawn Demarcke
was pleased with their
performance, but sad at the
same time to see his team
on the bench so early.
“It was good at the end,”
he said.
“Th e last game was our
best yet. If we had played
that hard the whole time, we
would have three wins, not
one.”
Ben Squirrell was disappointed
with the outcome of
his fi nal AWG.
“I am really disappointed,” he said.
He did not return with an ulu in the
2008 games, either, and this was his fi nal
chance at one.
“We couldn’t break out. Th ey had a really
strong defense.”
“Th e boys aren’t going out with their
heads down though. Th ey’re not cheering,
but they’re not disappointed.”
Demarcke will return for the 2012
AWG when his son is old enough to be
a Bantam.
NWT teams both fi nish with a silver lining
DIANA YEAGER
reporter@hayriverhub.com
Anyone who had fi nger nails by the end
of the Games was apparently not watching
basketball.
Somehow, each game the NWT played
ended up depending on minute details in
the fi nal quarter, making for a tense crowd.
Hailey Lyon and Skyler Courtoreille were
Hay River’s basketball players.
Th e girls’ team beat out all four of their
competing teams to make it to the top
position in the semi fi nals. Th ey beat out
Alaska 61-59 to make it to the fi nal game
against Team Alberta North in competition
for the gold ulu.
Th e NWT had creamed Alaska earlier on
in the week with a score of 55-45 - one of
their most spaced apart games. However,
they were unable conjure the
same fortune in their gold
medal game.
Th e NWT had a good lead
on Alberta up until the 4th
quarter, when Alberta had
a few lucky shots and made
a comeback. Th e game was
so close that every foul shot
or possession call counted.
But by the fi nal few minutes
of the game, Alberta had
gained itself a lead that the
NWT could just not make up.
Th e game ended 75-66 for
Alberta.
“At that point in the game,
you just have to push yourself. You gotta
keep doing your best until the game’s over,”
said Lyon.
It was a double-edged sword for the
NWT girls. Aft er winning every single
game, they fi nally had to face a loss. At the
same time, they were being awarded the
silver ulu.
“I feel really good about the way we
played,” said Lyon.
“Last time we got bronze, so this is a step
up.”
Lyon’s mother, Brenda Hall, had a sore
throat and shaking hands by the end of the
games.
“I am very excited for her,” she said.
Hall has been watching Lyon get up early
to practice her game alone in the gym
before school. She was proud to see the
results of her daughter’s eff orts.
According to Hall, Lyon has been asked
to try out for college teams at University of
Calgary and the Grande Prairie Regional
College.
Th e boys had a similar end to their week.
Team NWT beat out Alaska and was up
against Alberta North for the gold medal.
While most of their games had been close
in the round robin, Alberta
took a lead on the NWT in
the fi nal game that was diffi
cult to make up. Th e game
ended 72 - 57 for Alberta.
Courtoreille was happy with
his team’s results. Th ey played
well to make it to the fi nals,
and lost the gold game to a
strong team.
“It was a tough game,” said
Courtoreille.
His coach, Shaun Doherty,
said Courtoreille was a valuable
asset to the team.
“He barely said a word when
he joined us,” said Doherty.
“Now he’s right in there with all of them.”
Doherty said his team kept their focus
and drive for the whole week. He said
the boys had a Jenga tournament in their
room the night before the game.
“I have never seen so much focus just for
a game of Jenga,” he said. “Th is is one team
Volunteers make it happen
DIANA YEAGER
reporter@hayriverhub.com
Behind every athlete at
the AWG this year, there
are 1.5 volunteers behind
the scenes working to
make their achievement a
memory to last a lifetime.
2500 volunteers and offi
cials have spent the past
three years planning the
AWG in Grande Prairie.
For them, the event is
bigger than just the single
week of competitions.
Debbie Reid, President of
the Host Society, has spent
the past three years in a
sort of time lapse outside
of her normal life in order
to organize the past week.
As of Saturday, she said
she had mixed emotions
about seeing the end of the
games.
“Th ere’s this sense of
pride,” she said, “that we
pulled off something this
size without a hitch.”
Reid said the Games are
more than just sports for
youth.
“Th e kids are the ones

who are going to be taking
over,” she said. “So to set an
example for them is very
important.. It’s important
for the community to come
together - to unite. Every
impact this will have on
Grande Prairie will be positive,
especially considering
the last few years.”
Reid has been on board
since day one of the planning
for the AWG. Starting
off with a board of 200
members, the staff base
expanded to 2500 over the
next three years.
“It’s a huge endeavour,”she
said. “And it just kept
growing.”
April Weavell, a public
relations specialist, was in
charge of media relations
for the AWG. She and her
crew had set up a station
in the Service Plus Inn’s
conference room available
to all media covering the
Games. Staff were there 17
hours out of the day as an
epicentre for media to get
answers to any questions
they had regarding the
Games.
Th is was the fi nal week of
three years for Weavell, as
well. She has split up some
time with her PR business
to volunteer with the
Games committee.
One of Weavell’s most
eff ective ways of spreading
the news about the Games
has been through social
media, such as Facebook,
Twitter, and photo-sharing
websites. She said this has
garnered an interest from
all over the world, including
countries like Japan
and Romania.
“Th ey are fascinated with
the idea of the AWG,” she
said.
All this hype is for more
than just a sporting event
for kids, according to
Weavell.
“Th e reason I did all this
is for the kids,” she said. “I
feel these games motivate
kids to do their best and
be their best. It shows that
they can strive for goals
that make them a better
person. If we give kids that
opportunity, then we’ve
succeeded.”
HR biathletes hoard ulus of all colours
DIANA YEAGER
reporter@hayriverhub.com
NWT put on their racing caps for the fi nal event of the
week: the relay.
All through the week, biathletes had been raking in the
ulus from their individual events, but the relay was the
crowd favourite. Each athlete sported a fun hat as a way to
show NWT team spirit.
“Th e hats are just a tradition we have for the relays,” said
fi rst-year biathlete Kim Ring. “It’s fun to stand out.”
NWT was the most colourful team on the range on
Friday, thanks to quirky shark, dinosaur, bee, fl ower, and
viking hats they bought from a craft store.
“I think the relays are the favourite, for sure,” said
Brieanne Glaicar, who traded in biathlon for volleyball
this year. “It’s more free. Th ere’s no more stress of practicing,
so they just have fun.”
Glaicar was feeling small pangs of regret as she cheered
on her biathlete friends from the sidelines. She made the
decision to switch sports when she found out she was
eligible to play on the volleyball team.
“It would have been a good year for me in biathlon,” she
said. “I think I would have seen my best results. I miss it
out here.”
Some of the biathletes did see their best results over the
week.
Most of the races saw Hay River biathletes in the top
fi ve, with at least one person from Hay River on the
podium.
Angeline Magtibay claimed the bronze medal in her
juvenile 5 km race. Joseph Lirette won bronze for his
junior male 7.5 km race. Colton Glaicar and Christopher
Lirette shared the podium with a second and third place
fi nish in the juvenile male sprint, and Christopher and
Angeline both claimed bronze for their mass start races.
Joseph won another bronze for his 7.5 km mass start, then
another for his participation with team members Ilona
Gyapay and Mason Hachey in the relay.
“Th e relays are defi nitely the most fun,” said Angeline
Magtibay. “We have to work together, so it turns into a
team sport.
Angeline’s juvenile relay team, including Colton Glaicar
and Christopher Lirette pulled in a gold medal for their
fi nal race, beating out the Northern Alberta team.
A quiet alarm sounds off in a dark
classroom at 5 a.m. in the Peace-Wapiti
Academy, home of 200 female athletes for
the week of the Arctic Winter Games.
Biathlon coach April Glaicar is the fi rst
one up at the crack of dawn each morning.
She has laid her clothes out the night before
so she can slip through the dark room
without waking the athletes. She is the
fi rst to shower before the rush of female
athletes crowds the washroom.
Th is is the start of a normal day for
Glaicar during the AWG. Her responsibility
is to make sure her female biathletes are
awake, fed, and well equipped for their day
at the range.
She sneaks through the classroom at 5:30
to play a game of duck-duck-goose with
a fl ashlight, stepping over sleeping girls
and careful to wake only the snowshoe
biathletes, who begin sighting in at the
» ILONA GYAPAY AND KIM RING sport their crazy hats during relay day on Friday. Both Gyapay and Ring are fi rst year biathletes.
“We’re really proud of them,” said Chuck Lirette. “Th is is
our fi rst gold in the AWG. It’s fi ve or six years of training
that’s paid off .”
the two compete against athletes who have been in the
sleep until 7.
Glaicar leads her girls to the school
cafeteria, where a breakfast of eggs, meat,
cheese, fruit, and cereal is prepared to
start their day off right. Th e biathletes rush
through their breakfast and grab a paper
bag lunch on their way to the school bus.
Th ey are going to check out their rifl es
from the local RCMP.
“Th e fi rst day we did this, we had about
an hour and a half wait at for our rifl es,”
said Glaicar. “So we invented a system. Th e
snowshoe kids check out two guns, and
that way all 16 guns get to the range for
half the hassle.”
Organization and effi ciency are key for
the biathletes. With so little time in the
morning to prepare for a day at the range -
which can go as long as nine hours - each
minute counts.
Th e athletes don’t start their races until
10 a.m., but sighting in takes time. Th ey
arrive three hours early to warm up and
make sure they are shooting straight.
Glaicar’s job is to help the athletes adjust
their sightings to make sure they are
shooting as accurately as possible.
Glaicar said the girls have been lucky this
year: there is room to stretch out in their
classroom, and the line up for the showers
is minimal.
“We have been very fortunate,” said
Glaicar.
Th e boys have not been so lucky.
“Th ere’s no room for our suitcases,” said
Christopher Lirette.
“And there are only two showers,” said
Mason Hachey. “For 200 boys.”
Despite the messy conditions, there is a
friendly atmosphere in the athlete accommodations.
When there is time for fun, the
athletes make the most of it.
“We’ve been making up dances,” said
Kim Ring, ski biathlete. “And we made a
did not stop the biathletes from showing the rest of the
arctic how to shoot.
“Our kids cleaned 26 out of 30 targets,” said coach April
Glaicar. “Th ere was some very awesome shooting.”
Four of the athletes carried on to Quebec aft er the
Games. Kim Ring, Angeline Magtibay, Christopher
Lirette, and Colton Glaicar are participating in the cadets
biathlon competition.
Th e athletes remaining in Hay River are looking forward
to Ptubs this weekend.
Behind the Ulus: a day in the biathlon life
fort with slides out of our air mattresses.
We have a lot of fun. We all get along.”
“Our camp is pretty clean compared to
the others,” added Angeline Magtibay.
Th e boys play a diff erent game.
“Other teams have been defl ating our air
mattresses,” said Lirette.
If they’re lucky, the biathletes will be
tucked into their air mattress beds by
midnight, ready to do it all over again the
next day.
Th e coaches require that the athletes
stick around for the diff erent events at the
range and cheer on their teammates. It is
a task carried out with exuberance, not
obligation. Aft er racing to their maximum
potential, athletes recover and minutes
later are running alongside their teammates,
cheering them on.
“We’re exhausted, but it’s been a really
good experience,” said Ring.

Youngest Lirette joins jacket-clad family
DIANA YEAGER
reporter@hayriverhub.com
Th e Lirette family has a long history in the Arctic Winter
Games, and this year marked a very special year for biathlon
coach Chuck Lirette.
Th is year is the fi rst and only year all three of Lirette’s
boys have competed in the AWG at the same time.
“It’s a very special year for us,” said Lirette. “We will
look back on this for years as one of our highlights in the
Games.”
Th e Lirettes are no strangers to the AWG. Lirette fi rst
became involved as a volunteer when the Games were in
Hay River and Pine Point in the 1980’s. Now, he has seen
his eldest son Joseph compete three times, and his middle
son Christopher compete twice. Th is year, his youngest
Steel brings down
Under Ryan Steel’s profi le on the Arctic
Winter Games database, he says he wants
to win a medal for his territory.
Steel did just that in
his wrestling matches on
Tuesday, when he was
awarded the bronze medal
in the individual up to 75 kg
category.
With his father, Robert
Steel, and his coach Kathleen
Groenewegen cheering him
on from the sidelines, Steel
displayed a lot of energy and
intensity in his matches.
When asked how he prepares mentally
for a match, Steel said his choice of music
oft en gets him in the mood to fi ght.
“I listen to very heavy metal,” he said,
son, Andrew, joined his two brothers in the competitions.
“I just wanted the jacket,” said Andrew. He had seen
both his brothers go off to the Games in past years, and
wanted to be a part of it as well.
Because Lirette is one of the biathlon coaches, he did
not have much opportunity to cheer on Andrew at his
cross country races, which oft en ran at the same time as
biathlon events. However, the four have been getting some
family time in throughout the week.
“It would have been better if he was in biathlon,” said
Christopher, “but it’s good having everyone here.”
Had Andrew, 13, signed up for biathlon, he would have
been competing against athletes the same age as his older
brother. In cross country, he fi ts into a more specifi c age
group and skill level.
Th is will be the only year all three boys will travel to the
adding that ‘Machine Head’ was his choice
of music for that morning.
“I think of all the reasons why I want to
hurt the other person.”
Steel had just taken down the fi ghter his
size from Alaska when he spoke to Th e
Hub.
“Alaska is impossible to
beat,” he said. “Th ey’re
bigger and they have more
experience. But he didn’t
have the aggression or the
intimidation factor that I
have. He didn’t want it bad
enough.”
Steel was feeling confi dent
aft er his fi rst fi ght.
“Now that I know I can beat Alaska, the
rest is in the bag. I am ready to kill and
destroy.”
Steel came in third under Alaska and Nunavut
in the overall results.
Greenland did not make any room for
the NWT boys on the podium of their
national sport.
Hay River sent three boys to the AWG
for badminton.
Although they had played on school
teams, none of the Hay River athletes were
able to make it to the fi nal rounds of the
sport.
Sean Aitken and John Stanga were
competing in the junior male rounds, and
David Lafl eur was in the juvenile male
competitions.
Th e boys did have some luck in their
matches against Alaska, Nunavik, and the
Yukon; however, Greenland was unbreakable.
“It’s their national sport,” said Stanga.
“It’s like all they do over there.”
Congratulations to all Athletes who
Games together, as Joseph will be to old to qualify for the
2012 Games. However, the Lirettes will still hold a strong
presence in the biathlon community.
Lirette said biathlon is more than just a sport; it is a way
of life.
“It’s a family aff air,” he said, explaining that his wife, Dorothy,
is also quite involved as a parent in the sport. “It’s a
close bunch - the team, the parents - we have all become
very good friends through the sport.”
Th e Lirette family got involved with the sport when the
boys entered high school.
“I have to give credit to the schools,” said Lirette. “Th ey
have great programs for the kids. All our boys are on skis
because of that.”
Th e Lirette boys brought home six ulus for Hay River.
NWT boys a few birdies
short of the podium
Stanga said the boys were suff ering from
a “lack of motivation” at the beginning of
the week, but things picked up on Tuesday
when the junior boys started taking
control of their games.
“We gave ourselves a pep talk,” he said.
“We didn’t place, but we weren’t just getting
killed, either.”
Most of the games were close by the end,
with the winner only ahead by one or two
points.
David Lafl eur, playing for the juvenile
boys, said his game improved over the
week.
“It helps to play a lot of good people,” he
said.
“I think I got a little better by the end.”
Lafl eur said the toughest competitors
were Northern Alberta and Greenland.
He plans to try out for badminton for the
2012 Games in Whitehorse.
What do you get when you transport
1800 athletes from secluded
arctic communities to a city? Very
successful retailers.
Th e Prairie Mall was packed full for
the majority of the Games. Athletes
who don’t normally have access to
chain stores - or any stores at all -
took full advantage of their time in
Alberta’s seventh largest city.
Th e Prairie Mall is host to Zellers,
Shopper’s Drug Mart, Body Shop,
Le Chateau, and clothing stores for
young people such as Th e Garage and
Extreme.
Athletes from Greenland said that
while there are stores in Nuuk, a town
of 15,000, the condensed malls were
an effi cient way to get rid of their
money.
“We have everything we need in
Nuuk,” said volleyball coach Ove
Th omassen, “but not a shopping
centre.”
Th omassen said he and his athletes
were especially drawn to clothes
and souvenirs, on which many had
already spent $200 by the middle of
the week.
Jamessie Cumberbatch, an arctic
sports athlete from Nunavik, comes
from Inukjuak, a village of 1,700
people with no road access. Th is was
his fi rst time in Alberta.
“We are buying lots of clothes,” he
said.
“And hockey stuff ,” his teammates
chimed in.
Athletes from the lesser-secluded
NWT were also lightening their wallets.
Melanie Phillips from Fort Smith
and Sarah Cannell from Yellowknife,
both soccer players, had spent so
much time at the mall that they could
recognize passing people by name.
“All we have is Fields and Northern,”
said Phillips. “So we like to go to Th e
Garage and Stitches.”
“And there is a La Senza here, so like
all the girls come here and buy tons
of bras,” added Cannell.
Th e girls said the mall was also an
excellent place to catch up on socializing
in between sports events.
“We’re meeting a lot of new people
from the other teams,” said Cannell,
explaining that their newest friends
were the Russian boys. “We don’t
speak the same languages, but they
Th eir friend, Adrien Kagyut from
“It’s diff erent,” he said. “Everything
Th e boys were glowing
as they each took turns
waving the NWT fl ag high
above their heads in front
of a packed stadium at
the medal ceremonies in
Grande Prairie.
It was a climactic moment
for me as well: this was
the fi nal Hay River minor
hockey game I would attend
with a camera around
my neck.
And what better way to
fi nish off 72 weeks of sports
reporting than with gold
ulus around the kids’ necks
and a crowd belting out
‘Oh Canada’ right along
with them?
On Friday night, when
the NWT claimed their
gold medal, I realized that I
was beaming with pride at
the territory I didn’t realize
I called home.
I write to you, Hay River,
from my hotel room in
Grande Prairie as I am
completing my fi nal assignment
for Th e Hub:
the Arctic Winter Games.
(I can’t wait to get home -
Hay River is where it’s at.)
To the people who put up
with me learning how to be
a reporter at their expense,
thanks for your patience.
To all of you who so
willingly answered my You
‘Hub Girl’ passes
along the torch
DIANA YEAGER
reporter@hayriverhub.com
for making my Mondays
easier.
And to all of you who I
got to know through my
job as a reporter, thanks for
enriching my introduction
to our community. You’re
(part of) the reason I’ve
decided to stay.
Covering the Arctic
Winter Games was one of
the highlights of my time
working for Th e Hub.
Seeing all the kids I have
followed in their athletic
endeavours competing in
an international setting was
the perfect way to go out.
I’m turning in that
antiquated Hub camera
and closing my notepad
knowing I’ll get back into it
when the time comes.
But for now, I’m excited
to graduate from one side
of the lens to the other. I
look forward to being a
part of all the events I’ve
attended as a spectator for
the last 18 months.
My exit from the paper
means they’ll have to bring
in some fresh blood. I
probably won’t respond to
‘Hub Girl’ anymore, but
you can try it out on the
next reporter.
If you’re as friendly to the
next one as you were to me,
we might get up to 4,000
one day.
CONGRATULATIONS!!
to all the Athletes, Coaches and
Volunteers who participated in
the 2010 Arctic Winter Games!!
when 13 year old Trista
in the dog mushing
Dog mushing runs in the
