Introduction :<br />
The Government of Gujarat has adopted Modified Communicative Language Teaching<br />
Approach to teach English at the school level since 2004, whereas English is taught as<br />
one of the compulsory subjects upto Standard 12 th . This course has been designed to<br />
provide a link to what the students have learnt so far at school and help them to acquire<br />
basic skills of English Language. This course aims to improve the students’ Listening,<br />
Speaking, Reading and Writing Skills.<br />
Modified Communicative Approach (Mod.Com) of teaching English is kept in mind<br />
while preparing this course as it has already been in use in all the schools of Gujarat.<br />
Objectives :<br />
1. To check the general progress of the students.<br />
2. To help in grouping students according to their respective levels for group work.<br />
3. To identify problem areas for remedial work and for designing strategies for<br />
improving upon the quality of learning.<br />
4. To measure the impact and effectiveness of the course as a whole.<br />
5. To ensure reinforcement of student-motivation and of learning.<br />
6. To test the attainment of the level of a predetermined linguistic competence.<br />

Meaning and scope of demography crude, standard and Age specific rates Mortality<br />
rates pertaining to (i) CDR (ii) SDR (iii) IMR<br />
Birth rates pertaining to (i) CDR (ii) SDR (iii) Age specific Birth rates. Fertility rates<br />
pertaining to (i) GFR (ii) ASFR (iii)TFR. Simple illustrative examples.<br />
3 MOMENTS:<br />
Definition of raw and Central moments of a discrete random variable upto order four,<br />
their relationships (without proof) and numerical examples only.<br />
4 PROBABILITY DISTRIBUTION:<br />
Statement of Probability mass function of Binomial, Poisson and Normal distributions<br />
and their properties (without derivation) and simple examples based on these<br />
distributions.

Definition and Meaning of time series. Components of time series. Trend, Seasonal,<br />
Cyclic and Random components, Elimination of trend by the method of Moving<br />
average, method of curve fitting, using or ordinary least squares principle only, curve<br />
fitting for numerical data for linear and quadratic case only.<br />
4 BUSINESS FORECASTING METHODS:<br />
Forecasting concept, types and importance-General approach to forecasting, Methods of<br />
forecasting. Forecasting demand, Industry verses company sales. Forecasting affecting<br />
company sales-Graphical method-Linear and parabolic trends-Exponential smoothing<br />
method.
