GEORGE HENRY PREBLE 51<br />
<strong>the</strong> topmast rigg<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong>topmast at <strong>the</strong> same moment go<strong>in</strong>g with<br />
it a few feet above <strong>the</strong> lower cap. All hands were at once called to "clear<br />
wreck." <strong>The</strong> "Madison," Lieutenant Command<strong>in</strong>g Herndon, see<strong>in</strong>g our<br />
disabled condition and th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g we had been struck by lightn<strong>in</strong>g, bore<br />
down with<strong>in</strong> hail to our assistance. Be<strong>in</strong>g nearsighted, he misjudged' <strong>the</strong><br />
distance, and ran <strong>in</strong>to our starboard waist, carry<strong>in</strong>g away <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong>cha<strong>in</strong>s,<br />
waist-boat, hammock-rail, and wheel, and crush<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> our bulwarks<br />
down to <strong>the</strong> water-ways, and, as afterwards ascerta<strong>in</strong>ed at Norfolk,<br />
break<strong>in</strong>g twelve frame timbers. <strong>The</strong> "Madison's" bowsprit was<br />
carried away by <strong>the</strong> collision. We fired a gun as a signal of distress to<br />
<strong>the</strong> "Flirt," and employed <strong>the</strong> rema<strong>in</strong>der of <strong>the</strong> night <strong>in</strong> clear<strong>in</strong>g away<br />
<strong>the</strong> wreck and gett<strong>in</strong>g sail on <strong>the</strong> ship. <strong>The</strong> night was Egyptian <strong>in</strong> its<br />
darkness, which was enlivened with sheets of ragged p<strong>in</strong>k lightn<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
<strong>The</strong> squall must have been limited <strong>in</strong> extent, as none of <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r vessels<br />
<strong>in</strong> company were at all <strong>in</strong>jured by it. Without fur<strong>the</strong>r mishap or adventure<br />
<strong>the</strong> squadron anchored <strong>in</strong> Hampton Roads on <strong>the</strong> 18th of July, <strong>1842</strong>.<br />
When we were dismasted off Cape Canaveral I was below and on <strong>the</strong><br />
sick-list from <strong>the</strong> effects of my recent canoe expedition, but when I heard<br />
<strong>the</strong> collision with <strong>the</strong> "Madison" I scrambled on deck, but was immediately<br />
sent <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> cab<strong>in</strong> by Lieutenant Rodgers, who told me I could<br />
only be <strong>in</strong>jured and of no use where I was. Very soon he came down <strong>in</strong>to<br />
<strong>the</strong> cab<strong>in</strong>, br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g with him <strong>the</strong> deck time-piece, which had been knocked<br />
<strong>in</strong>to a cocked hat, so to speak, by <strong>the</strong> collision. Cool as he ever was <strong>in</strong><br />
time of danger, and without <strong>the</strong> least sign of excitement, he commenced<br />
putt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> clock toge<strong>the</strong>r, and, turn<strong>in</strong>g to me, said, humorously, "Preble,<br />
I don't m<strong>in</strong>d be<strong>in</strong>g dismasted, for that may happen to every one who<br />
goes to sea, but to be kicked <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> stern by my friend afterwards is<br />
too bad." No doubt <strong>the</strong> collision was caused by Lieutenant Herndon<br />
be<strong>in</strong>g near-sighted, and th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> vessel had way on when she had<br />
not. His <strong>in</strong>tent was good, but <strong>the</strong> result was disastrous to both vessels.
