Average U.S. rates on fixed
mortgages rose this week but
remained near record lows,
keeping home buying more affordable.
Mortgage buyer Freddie
Mac said Thursday that the average
rate on the 30-year fixed
loan increased to 3.42 percent
from 3.38 percent last week.
That’s still near the 3.31 percent
rate reached in November, the
lowest in records dating to 1971.
The average on the 15-year
fixed mortgage increased to
2.71 percent from 2.66 percent
last week. The record low is 2.63
percent.
The rate on the 30-year fixed
mortgage averaged 3.66 percent
in 2012, the lowest annual
average in 65 years.
Low mortgage rates are a
key reason the housing market
began to recover last year, and
many economists predict 2013
could be an even stronger year.
Total home sales last year increased
to 4.65 million, the most
since 2007. And home prices are
steadily increasing, which
makes consumers feel wealthier
and more likely to spend.
Another reason for the housing
rebound is that there aren’t
enough houses for sale. A limited
supply has created demand
for new construction, which has
made builders more confident.
Lower mortgage rates also
have persuaded more people to
refinance. That typically leads
to lower monthly mortgage payments
and more spending. Consumer
spending drives nearly
70 percent of economic activity.
Still, the housing market has
a long way to a full recovery.
And many people are unable to
take advantage of the low rates,
either because they can’t qualify
for stricter lending rules or
they lack the money to meet
larger down payment requirements.

and it’s all because of a huge resort
pool and modern, spacious
club.
For the past four years, since
Del Webb opened, residents
have been using a smaller pool
in one location, a fitness center
in another and gathering place
in another area. Now the long
awaited Oasis Club has finally
opened bringing all the amenities
together in one resort-like
place.
“Some days I come here expecting
to just come in for a
while and I wind up staying six
or seven hours because there is
so much to do,” said resident
Linda Buckner, who is excited
about the new club.
Buckner enjoys swimming
in the pools and chatting with
her friends in the cafe.
The gem of the Oasis Club is a
10,000-square-foot,
infinity
edge pool that looks like it is
flowing right into the lake and
grass beyond. There is both a
ladder entry and a beach style
entry and an area where swimmers
can relax under huge umbrellas
that are right in the pool.
Next to this pool are a separate
lap pool and then a hot tub.
“It’s the nicest pool I’ve been
in,” said Dorothy Leibowitz.
“It’s beautiful and it’s warm.”
The pool is heated to about 85
degrees with a geothermal system
that uses the warmth of the
lake to heat the pool without
ever mixing the lake water with
the saltwater pool.
Leibowitz said the new club
offers so much for her to do
from the book club and bocce
ball to ice cream socials and special
dinners.
Barbecue grills around the
pool are already being used by
residents who are grilling their
dinners and eating beside the
pool in either an outdoor seating
area or a section under roof on a
screened-in porch.

Once a week, an almost eerie
silence descends on the normally
shrieky clatter of the Boys &
Girls Club Shady Oaks Community
Center in east Fort Myers, as
the after-school crowd gets up to
its elbows in art.
After finishing their homework,
the kids line up, sign in and take
their seats. The walls of their studio,
partitioned off from the echoey
gymnasium by repurposed office
cubicle dividers, are covered
with their artwork: paintings of
jungles, waterfalls, roaring lions.

Getting started in astronomy is not about spending
a lot of money on fancy optical equipment —
that can come later.
It’s about looking up at the night sky, and Southwest
Florida is a good place for it.
“This is one of the best places for astronomy,”
said Carol Stewart, program presenter and NASA/
Jet Propulsion Lab solar system ambassador at the
Calusa Nature Center and Planetarium. “We’re
very flat, so we can see from horizon to horizon
with no hills or mountains to limit our view.”

Lee Memorial Health
System will lose more than
$1 million in Medicare payments
this year for its rate
of patient readmissions and
its scores on federal performance
measures, the organization
estimates.
At the same time, newly
released government data
show that hospital systems
in Collier County will either
see no penalties or will get
bonuses from Medicare for
their
better-than-average
results.
Under the federal health
reform law, U.S. hospitals
this year will receive Medicare
payments cuts or bonuses
of up to 1 percent depending
on how well they
followed established standards
of medical care and
how patients assessed their
own treatment.
Hospitals face up to another
1 percent penalty for
having too many patients readmitted
for care less than a
month after leaving the hospital.
This carrot and stick approach
is part of emerging
regulationslinkingpayment
with performance, rather
than just the number of procedures
health centers perform.
Factoring in all of those,
Lee Memorial, which operates
95 percent of the hospital
beds in Lee County, expects
to see an average 0.6
percent drop in payments at
itsfouracute-carehospitals.
The penalty was disappointing,
but not surprising,
said Dr. Chuck Krivenko,
the health system’s chief
medical officer for clinical
services and chief patient
safety officer.
“What we see there is
what we expected,” Krivenko
said. “But our expectations
are that it will get
much better over the next
cycle.”
Health system administrators
blame record-keeping
for the bulk of the organization’s
poor showing
this year. A large portion of
the Medicare grading is related
to whether hospitals
follow certain treatment
guidelines, such as prescribing
standard medications
or ordering tests.

the warmest year on record
for the contiguous United
States, scientists from the National
Climatic Data Center in
Asheville, N.C., announced
Tuesday. The past year
smashed the previous record
for the warmest year, which
was 1998.
The average temperature
for 2012 was 55.3 degrees, 3.2
degrees above the 20th century
average, and 1 degree

Lee County schools will implement
security changes in the aftermath
of the school shooting in Newtown,
Conn., and a shooting outside a
Fort Myers Christian school on Monday.
Lee Superintendent Joseph Burke
outlined the changes
and the associated costs
during
Tuesday’s
school board meeting.
“We have been concerned
about issues of
safety and security, issues
every community
around the country is
dealing with in the aftermath
of Sandy Hook
(Elementary),”
said
Burke. A shooter killed
20 elementary students
and six educators in the
massacre.
Burke said he
worked with the Lee
County Sheriff’s Office
over security details in
the district.
Currently, 90 percent of Lee
schools have single-point entrances.
The district will work on having a single
point of entry at all schools, which
will require work in about eight
schools, Burke said.
Cameras that are nonfunctional or
need maintenance will be fixed or replaced
in the next few weeks, he said.
Burke said he’s talked with Sheriff
Mike Scott about increasing the presence
of School Resource Officers in
elementary schools.

“I used to walk around gritting my teeth,” said
Philip Cassata of Fort Myers.
That was life before acupuncture — a life
eked out under a cloud of pain caused mainly by
spinal degeneration. The former Air Force medical
corpsman had grown up around construction trades
with his father, then spent long hours standing on
hard floors as a school principal. He maintained an
active life throughout, whether bicycling or skiing,

Low back pain like Cassata’s is the most common
reason for job-related disability in the United

Zinc is a leading trace element in the human body, second only to iron. Zinc
deficiency has been well-documented in people with liver diseases. However, supplementation
with zinc protects against alcohol-induced liver injury in all people.
Zinc deficiency occurs more frequently in people with inflammatory bowel
disease as well as in high blood pressure patients on thiazide diuretics or ACE
inhibitors. Symptoms of deficiency include loss of appetite, unusual skin lesions
and a poor immune system. Taking too much zinc may lead to a copper deficiency
by not allowing copper absorption.
Long-term daily intake of zinc of more than 80 milligrams per day has been
associated with a significant increase in hospitalizations for urinary problems. The
upper level of zinc per day for both men and women is 40 milligrams.
Taking a multivitamin with balanced trace minerals is the best way to avoid
both excess and deficiency of zinc.

Age-related macular
degeneration is a common
degenerative condition of the
retina that can produce “legal
blindness,” usually in retirement
age population. About
one in 10 individuals in their
50s will display some changes
of AMD, and about one in
three in their 70s will display
AMD changes.
There is a definite genetic
component to macular degeneration.
If your sibling or a
parent has the degeneration,
you are far more likely to
develop it than the average
population.
Macular degeneration gets
its name because it alters the
retina tissue in the central
vision area or macula of the
eye. This is the only part of
the retina that has central
sharp reading vision. The
remainder of the retina is
responsible for side vision and
adaptation to light and dark
conditions.
AMD is generally put into
two categories: wet AMD and
dry AMD.
Dry AMD can have pigment
changes and drusen
(yellow, fatty deposits) buildup.
The tissue can slowly
waste away and can cause
vision loss.
In wet AMD, bleeding and/
or swelling can also occur.

Five brush fires flare
Crews from a number of
area fire departments were
called to help fight five
brush fires around Lehigh
Acres on Sunday.
Clark Ryales, public
information officer for the
Caloosahatchee Forestry
Center, said the first fire
was reported around 12:30
p.m.
“There were five different
fires,” Ryales said. “One
was five acres, a couple
were two acres, one was one
acre and one was a quarteracre.”
One fire, at Todd Avenue
and 28th Avenue SW, was
reported shortly after 3 p.m.
and quickly doused by firefighters.

corner of Todd and 28th was
threatened by the flames in
a vacant lot next to it on
28th but fire crews were
able to prevent damage to
the structure.
A resident, Brenda Lane
of 27th Street SW, said her
husband first saw the fire
and told her to call for help.
“I called 911 and when I
went outside you could hear
the whoosh of the flames
going up the trees,” Lane
said.
Another fire crews were
responding to was on East
13th Street, near Wellington
and Johns avenues.
By 4 p.m., fire officials
reported all the fires were
contained but crews remained
at the scenes in case
of a flare-up.
Fugitive apprehended
After nearly six months
of running from the law, one
of Crime Stoppers 10 Most
Wanted fugitives is now
behind bars.
Tyrone Campbell, 42, was
apprehended by the Lee
County Sheriff’s Office
shortly after 3:30 p.m.
Thursday, Jan. 24, on Venice
Avenue in Lehigh Acres.
Campbell is a convicted
sex offender who had been
dodging charges of failing
to appear in court and failure
to register as a sex offender.
This Fort Myers
native has been arrested 11
times before in Lee County,
with a criminal record dating
back to 1988.
Among the charges on
his rap sheet are two counts
of lewd and lascivious assault
on a child, battery,
multiple counts of aggravated
assault, parole violations
and numerous drug related
infractions. In 1993, he was
convicted as a sex offender,
and in total, he’s served five
stints in state prison for a
combined term of roughly
11 years – which is in addition
to his Lee County jail
time. Campbell has also
been arrested several times
in Collier County over the

Go to news-press.com/submitevent to post a community event. Fill in all the red checked fields, starting with the event title. Under venue,
enter where the event will be held. You can select from an existing database of venues or add a new one. Make sure to click on the circle to the
left of the venue.
Add the time and day. You can also click on a box to indicate that it is a recurring event.
Under the date, make sure to fill out the online description with a brief explanation of the event. Please use sentence case; avoid “ALL CAPS.”
Other required fields are: Categories, Public Phone number and Price. Write “Free” if there is no charge for the event.
