Five brush fires flare
Crews from a number of
area fire departments were
called to help fight five
brush fires around Lehigh
Acres on Sunday.
Clark Ryales, public
information officer for the
Caloosahatchee Forestry
Center, said the first fire
was reported around 12:30
p.m.
“There were five different
fires,” Ryales said. “One
was five acres, a couple
were two acres, one was one
acre and one was a quarteracre.”
One fire, at Todd Avenue
and 28th Avenue SW, was
reported shortly after 3 p.m.
and quickly doused by firefighters.
A house at the
corner of Todd and 28th was
threatened by the flames in
a vacant lot next to it on
28th but fire crews were
able to prevent damage to
the structure.
A resident, Brenda Lane
of 27th Street SW, said her
husband first saw the fire
and told her to call for help.
“I called 911 and when I
went outside you could hear
the whoosh of the flames
going up the trees,” Lane
said.
Another fire crews were
responding to was on East
13th Street, near Wellington
and Johns avenues.
By 4 p.m., fire officials
reported all the fires were
contained but crews remained
at the scenes in case
of a flare-up.
Fugitive apprehended
After nearly six months
of running from the law, one
of Crime Stoppers 10 Most
Wanted fugitives is now
behind bars.
Tyrone Campbell, 42, was
apprehended by the Lee
County Sheriff’s Office
shortly after 3:30 p.m.
Thursday, Jan. 24, on Venice
Avenue in Lehigh Acres.
Campbell is a convicted
sex offender who had been
dodging charges of failing
to appear in court and failure
to register as a sex offender.
This Fort Myers
native has been arrested 11
times before in Lee County,
with a criminal record dating
back to 1988.
Among the charges on
his rap sheet are two counts
of lewd and lascivious assault
on a child, battery,
multiple counts of aggravated
assault, parole violations
and numerous drug related
infractions. In 1993, he was
convicted as a sex offender,
and in total, he’s served five
stints in state prison for a
combined term of roughly
11 years – which is in addition
to his Lee County jail
time. Campbell has also
been arrested several times
in Collier County over the
