<strong>Course</strong> Structure & Delivery Method<br />

The lectures will be delivered in the UQ School<br />

<strong>of</strong> Biomedical Sciences histology laboratory,<br />

fi tted with 60 latest iMAC computers and a new<br />

integrated high defi nition audio visual system. All<br />

practical workshops will be delivered in UQ Gross<br />

<strong>Anatomy</strong> Facility.<br />

Each module will be taught as a three hour session,<br />

and will include:<br />

• Pre-test multiple choice questions (MCQs)<br />

for 15 minutes<br />

• Composite group teaching –involving<br />

an overview <strong>of</strong> module objectives by the<br />

module co-ordinator to all attendees<br />

lasting 25 to 45 minutes<br />

• Focussed group teaching – small groupfacilitated-learning<br />

on prosected specimens<br />

and images lasting 2 hours. The surgical<br />

faculty to candidate ratio will be<br />

approximately 1:5.<br />

Assessment<br />

The candidates will be assessed via:<br />

• Pre test MCQs for each module, and<br />

• On course completion<br />

Post test MCQs<br />

Specimen identifi cation<br />

Radiologic image identifi cation.<br />

Prize for Outstanding Achievement<br />

A prize <strong>of</strong> $1000 will be awarded for outstanding<br />

achievement to the candidate in the <strong>Advanced</strong><br />

<strong>Surgical</strong> <strong>Anatomy</strong> course who obtains the highest<br />

overall marks.<br />

<strong>Course</strong><br />

The <strong>Advanced</strong> <strong>Surgical</strong> <strong>Anatomy</strong> <strong>Course</strong> is a<br />

postgraduate <strong>of</strong>fering between<br />

Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital and<br />

The <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Queensland</strong>’s School <strong>of</strong><br />

Biomedical Sciences, and accredited by the<br />

Royal Australasian College <strong>of</strong> Surgeons<br />

(RACS).


<strong>Course</strong> Information<br />

The <strong>Advanced</strong> <strong>Surgical</strong> <strong>Anatomy</strong> <strong>Course</strong> (ASAC)<br />

will provide topographical training in anatomy with<br />

practical sessions on wet prosected specimens.<br />

Although the course is mainly intended for junior<br />

doctors preparing for <strong>Surgical</strong> Examination Training<br />

examinations, it is open to junior doctors from other<br />

specialties as well.<br />

The ASAC is an eleven module structure course<br />

to be held over 23 weeks at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Queensland</strong>’s St Lucia Campus. To enhance<br />

accessibility, each module session will be<br />

conducted twice; on a Saturday 0900hrs-1200hrs<br />

and on a Wednesday night 1800 hrs-2100 hrs.<br />

The course is accredited and quality assured by the<br />

<strong>University</strong> Of <strong>Queensland</strong>’s School <strong>of</strong> Biomedical<br />

Sciences and will be conducted by experienced<br />

Brisbane based senior practising surgeons,<br />

Fellows <strong>of</strong> RACS. A Certifi cate <strong>of</strong> Attainment from<br />

the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Queensland</strong> and <strong>Queensland</strong><br />

Health, with RACS accreditation, will be awarded to<br />

successful candidates.<br />

<strong>Course</strong> Objectives<br />

The objectives <strong>of</strong> the course are:<br />

• To provide training in topographical anatomy<br />

to a level appropriate for postgraduates in<br />

surgical, radiologic and medical disciplines<br />

• To enable candidates to identify marked<br />

structures and their anatomical relations in<br />

prosected specimens and images<br />

• To enable candidates to correlate anatomical<br />

structures with radiological images.<br />

<strong>Course</strong> Content<br />

The course will teach surgical anatomy addressing<br />

all aspects <strong>of</strong> regional and systemic anatomy. Upon<br />

successful completion <strong>of</strong> the course, candidates<br />

will demonstrate knowledge in surgical relevance <strong>of</strong><br />

all the structures covered in the course and surgical<br />

and procedural approaches to each organ or<br />

structure; and develop skill in anatomical structure<br />

identifi cation and radiologic interpretation.<br />

Entry Requirements<br />

Completion <strong>of</strong> an undergraduate medical degree,<br />

such as MBBS or its equivalent qualifi cation.<br />

<strong>Course</strong> Fees<br />

The course fees are AU $5,500 plus GST.<br />

<strong>Course</strong> Schedule<br />

The fi rst course will start on Saturday 4 February<br />

2012 and fi nish on Saturday 14 July.<br />

There will be eleven modules each delivered twice<br />

with options to participate on a Saturday morning<br />

or a Wednesday evening.<br />

Saturday 0900 hrs to 1200 hrs<br />

Wednesday 1800 hrs to 2100 hrs<br />

The course has a limit <strong>of</strong> 30 candidates divided<br />

into 2 streams (Wednesday and Saturday) <strong>of</strong> 15<br />

candidates per stream. Candidates will be required<br />

to submit their choice for their chosen Saturday<br />

and Wednesday modules. The preferred days will,<br />

however, only be allocated if available, therefore<br />

early registration is advised.
