Social Social Scene Scene Great Great American American Race Race irk said we were on the "Power Corner"... where things were happening! Our Healeys were parked diagonally, grills out, at the end of Austin Austin Austin Healey Healey Association Association Association proudly proudly proudly displayed displayed the Finish Line corridor. All the racers drove under the finish line banner, past our cars and parked across the boulevard from us. What a fantastic array of vehicles! I think the racer's only requirement was that their vehicle was 25 years old or more. Each race car had decals of places they've been - races they've entered and places they'd earned. These cars were driven! This year's race was from Concord, South Carolina to Irving, Texas and from Irving to Anaheim, Ca. Some cars made the whole trip, others did just the Irving to Anaheim leg. I guess about 100 vehicles finished. We had a pretty fantastic array of Healeys...in the parking lot of Beba's & Gilmo's for breakfast and at downtown Anaheim... drivers: Don Fisher, Bruce Steele, Bill Barnett in Red driven by friend Alisia, Thad Sandford and son, Rick, Marty Dispoto, Kirk Kvam, George McHarris, Mike Newsome, Lou & Rich Heimann, Ron & LeRae Phillips, Ron & I. George McHarris presented the Hard Luck Trophy to Mike Newsome, who had "won" it at CHW but now had the new engraved I.D. tag attached. Our Our clubs clubs finest! finest! Back to the racers... we waved a congratulatory wave as they drove past … a few waved back then noticing the Healeys, gave US a thumbs up. The driver and navigator from one of the Corvettes, both in "flames" shirts, spent quite a while inspecting Kirk's bonnet-up modified Healey. So we were there to see and be seen. Mission accomplished! Gee Gee Ron! Ron! Ron! Not Not sure sure sure what what that that is? is? is? Thanks to George McHarris for getting our Healeys in the show. Flashback Flashback The The Hard Hard Luck Luck Award Award and and where where it it came came from from e received a telephone call from a long time friend, Sandy Davies, stating some people in the Healey club were inquiring about the origination of the Hard Luck Award, and fortunately or unfortunately, here is the story: Dewey Dewey assessing assessing assessing the the situation situation with with beer beer in in hand hand In the early ‘80’s, I was looking for an Austin Healey and through Moss Motors, they recommended I contact Ken Rocke. Ken had a friend that had a 1968 BJ8 that had been undergoing repair for quite some time, and had been sitting for about 9 years and hadn’t been run, registered or anything during that time. Well I purchased the car and after a lot of hard work and repair, I got the Healey up and running. We attended California Healey Week (CHW) at Lake San Marcos in May 1986, then CHW Santa Maria in May 1987. While traveling to Lawrence Welk’s Resort for CHW 1988, about 30 miles from the resort, my left rear tire decided to shed all of its rubber in tiny pieces and the steel belt beat the stuffing out of the fender, while it remained attached at the very end. The shredded tire was replaced by the tire manufacturer, as was another tire that had a bulge in it. I can’t recall the name of the company. They wouldn’t pay for the repair to the fender and said I would have to take them to court for it. I passed because that could cost more that the actual repair. The following year, CHW 1989 was at Pismo Beach and more hard luck with the Healey. We were on a rally to Moro Bay and the left front wheel bearing froze up out in the middle of nowhere, of course. After considerable roadside consultation with several other Healey club members, a tow truck was called to pick up the car, and my wife and I rode back to the hotel in the back seat of Jim and Sheila McKnight’s Healey. That was a real cozy ride (I am 6’3”)! Needless to say, we didn’t feel that was right, but they insisted, so we took the money and decided to have a “Hard Luck Award” plaque made up for future CHW events to be passed on the other unfortunate souls, as a reminder that our Healeys are not without fault! After we got home, I had a very difficult time locating a stub axle, but it was replace and no further problems. Can you believe, after all of this, I still consider Ken Rocke a good friend! Since moving to Arizona in 1995, we have not been as active in car events as we were in California, but we still get around. We are charter members of the Mile High British car club in this area.
