VOL 37 NO. 03 MARCH 2012
The weather is warming up
and March is not only a
month to enjoy a nice drive
in the sun. March is also
the month for nominations
for your AHA Board of
Directors. In this issue of
HMN, you will find a
nominations form, along
with a description of the
duties of the AHA Officers from our Bylaws.
Nominations will be open until March 31, and will close at
the conclusion of our Nominations Lunch and Board
Meeting, which will be held at Joe’s Crab Shack, 1420
South Azusa Avenue, City of Industry. They are located
on the south side of the 60 freeway, in the northwest
corner of the Puente Hills Mall parking lot. There are no
speed bumps in their lot, so feel free to bring your Healey.
If you are unable to make the Nominations Lunch, you
can print and mail, or email your nomination form to any
Officer. You can nominate yourself, or anyone else
Over the past weeks I have
had the time to check a
number of regional Austin
Healey Club sites and explore
their club website, images of
cars and planned events.
Maybe it is the weather here
in Southern California but on all three items our club
excels, especially in Club and event activities. Last month
in addition to the numerous weekend and weekday car
gatherings, one of our members George McHarris had
gone “viral”. For those who are not aware, George
McHarris participated with the Austin Healey Club New
England in presenting Jay Leno with a Dunlop tire
mimicking the full scale Dunlop Bridge at Le Mans. Both
George and his car look spectacular under the “limelight”
and one thing lead to another with George questioned in a
Healey Q&A session by Jay. Then, with Jay at the wheel
they drove through the streets of Burbank ending the
drive with a statement that he (Jay) needs to “get one of
these”. Congratulations George on your new career as a
salesman and internet star.
HEALEY MOTOR NEWS SINCE 1974
From the President Bruce Steele
(hopefully with his or her permission!) for an Officer
position. Elections will be held next month, and Officers
will be installed at CHW.
I also want to let the membership know that it came to
my attention that the AHA is not officially recognized by
the IRS as a non-profit organization, even though our
Articles of Incorporation specifically indicate that such is
the intent of our organization. It appears that somewhere
through the years the proper forms were not filed with
the IRS to either obtain or maintain our non-profit
status. As of this writing, I am planning to present to the
Board the necessary forms and request approval to submit
the forms to the IRS along with the application fee of
$400. Your Officers believe it is our proper fiduciary duty
to rectify this issue in a timely manner.
I hope to see you at Joe’s Crab Shack on March 31. Until
then…
Good fun and fun driving,
From the Vice President Peter Roses
Just a few weeks ago, the Club met at Cars and Coffee in
Irvine for a combined car meet and drive along Ortega
Highway. Weather really did cooperate with the attendees
and a special surprise awaited us at Hell’s Kitchen. Again,
check out the write up in this issue.
Upcoming in March we have a couple of events. On
Sunday March 15 is the Queen’s English Car Show in Van
Nuys. This is a Club event and we encourage all to attend.
At the end of the month we are planning a Club Event to
send off John Nikas as he starts his Drive for Cancer 50
state tour. Look to your e-mail and Club Web site for
updates for the time and location of the send off.
Then in April we have another Pre-Rocker Car assemble
session at Don Fisher’s, and a drive with the San Diego
British Car Club on Sunday April 22 nd. The latter will
require you to sign up, see attached URL for all
information. http://sandiegobritishcarday.org/portal/
So, lot’s events to participate hope to see you there. Until
next month, Peter
VOL 37 NO. 03 MARCH 2012
Historical Stuff By Bill Wilkman
Today’s Historical Stuff article does not directly involve the Austin Healey Association. But, it is about an event covered in the Healey
Motor News, and it is definitely a compe"ing story.
We’ve all heard of the concept of a “near death experience”. You know; those nail-biting stories about someone who
came within a gnat’s eyelash of the afterlife. Well, the November 1981 issue of Healey Motor News carried the story of a
triple near-death experience. The subjects were driver John Wilson, his navigator Dean Thayer, and their beautiful BJ8
Healey. John and Dean, members of the Austin Healey Club of Oregon, were enjoying a club campout at McIver State
Park near Estacada, Oregon during the summer of 1981.
One of the weekend’s events was a funkhana involving a series of trials requiring driver and navigator to work as a team
to complete various challenges. For example, one event involved John driving his Healey around a pylon. To make
things interesting, John held onto a rope tethered to the pylon. Dean was charged with the job of holding an egg in a
spoon, taking care not to let John’s driving jerk the egg out of the spoon. Fun and somewhat challenging, this event
apparently ended successfully, with egg intact. Next the daring duo took on a series of pylons, John driving and Dean
sweeping a ball with a broom. More fun and games with pylon abuse the only negative consequence.
The next event took risk to a whole different level. (This is the point in today’s TV shows where the following
message would appear on the screen: “This program contains graphic images that may be disturbing for young children and other
viewers. Parental discretion is advised.”)This time, John was blindfolded with a sack over his head. His job was to drive
through a serpentine pylon lined course, with Dean directing his travels using nothing but verbal commands. Okay, so
what’s the big deal, you may be asking? How about the small matter that the Clackamas River was just 63 feet from
the course finish Yes, things got ugly in a hurry!
John and Dean were doing just fine
negotiating the slalom course, until the last
corner. A wrong turn at this point put them
in deep peril. With the mighty Clackamas
just a short distance away, the pair found
themselves hurtling over the 15-foot-tall cliff
separating the slalom course from the river.
In an instant the car was immersed in the
river’s cold waters. And, if that was not bad
enough, the car flipped as it descended,
landing upside down and trapping John and
Dean in the car’s cockpit. Okay, here’s where
adrenaline seems to have come into play. Our
sunken heroes first tried to find an air pocket
near the floor. Then, they tried to squeeze
out through the small space offered by the
partially collapsed windshield. No luck. The
opening was just too small. My guess is if the
scene to follow was filmed for a “B” movie,
we’d see shirt buttons floating to the surface,
as one of our heroes did an Incredible Hulk transformation, hurtling the car to one side and freeing the captives. In
fact, the two were able to muster enough human strength to sufficiently lift the car to provide an escape path.
I found John Wilson via an internet search and asked him about the accident. He said it happened so fast, he had no
time to think. Quoting from the email, “When I first tried to get out I couldn’t so I put my head up to the floor to try
to find air; remember we were completely upside down, and unknown to me, my navigator was doing the same thing.
Adrenalin took over and we both lay on our backs and pushed the car up and scooted out on our backs.” Dang! Makes
my hair stand on end just thinking about it!
VOL 37 NO. 03 MARCH 2012
Historical Stuff cont’d By Bill Wilkman
By this time, the club members on shore had
waded to the hapless car and managed to turn it
over onto its wheels. The 15-foot elevation
difference between the river and dry land above
precluded pushing the car out of the river, so the
car sat submerged for some three hours. A
wrecker soon arrived, prepared to winch the car up
the steep bank. But, John would not allow it.
Earlier that day, the car had earned first place in
the restored class of the club’s concours. Dragging
it up the bank would have greatly worsened the
damage already suffered by the car. So, John wisely
ordered the services of a crane. And with the car
supported by planks, it was lifted from the river.
And, what about the condition of our two heroes?
They both suffered bruises. Dean also sustained a
serious cut on one arm. Healey owners were young
and tough in those days, however, so no paramedics were called. First aid was administered by fellow club members in
the back of a mid-1950s Ford Club Van, the event’s support vehicle. John is the strapping young man with the flaming
red afro in the photos accompanying this article. As testified by the photos, John not only went down with the “ship”,
he stuck around to make sure it was treated with kindness during its salvage!
The Clackamas County Sheriff responded to the incident to take a report. According to my latest email from John, he
recalled that in the section where it said “cause of accident”, the responding deputy wrote “sack on head.”
All in all, I’d say the two were lucky to be alive. But, not only did they survive, they also took home two trophies: The
Best Restored trophy and the Hard Luck trophy!
HEALEY MOTOR NEWS SINCE 1974
Three days later, John drained the engine and
transmission of water, installed new oil and the
engine started on the first try. The HMN
reported John as commenting “…she fired up and
runs as good as ever.” John’s insurance claim was
honored and by August, repair work was
underway.
In one of his emails to me, John noted that it
took four years to finish the repair of the sunken
Healey. Its first post-repair outing was the 1985
West Coast Meet in Monterey, California where
it earned a third place Peoples’ Choice award. By
then, though, he had fallen in love with his much
rarer 1962 Tri-Carb, so he sold the BJ8. The last
he heard, the car had been resold and was
somewhere in Germany. Note to new owner:
Any rattles you may hear are likely the fresh
water snails in the frame rails.
Thanks to John Wilson for supplying the photographs for this article and for generously sharing his reco"ections of the harrowing
event. John runs a Healey restoration business, Healey Lane Restorations of Oregon.
VOL 37 NO. 03 MARCH 2012
Angie’s List Opportunity By Gary Feldman, AHCA
Austin-Healey Club of America members have a unique
WIN/WIN opportunity in front of them. By taking a few
moments to list their favorite classic sports car suppliers
and mechanical consultants on Angie’s List we’ll all
benefit.
Angie’s List has created a “Classic Cars” section and is
seeking input from clubs around the country for
recommendations to those who subscribe to Angie’s List.
Each verified report can earn $5 for the Austin-Healey
Club of America if you designate it as your charity. Those
who already have done so, say it takes about 3-5 minutes to
complete a report and receive verification that the charity
they designated will receive $5 per report. You may
provide more than one report, and each one verified earns
AHCA $5. Here’s how to do it.
1. Go to https://www.angieslist.com/AngiesList/review/
charitablereports.aspx
It is very simple to submit a report. There are big buttons
that say “continue” and lots of prompts if you leave
anything out.
2. When you click on the link above, you’ll be prompted
to set up a profile, including a password. Angie’s List does
not accept anonymous reports and requires a valid email
address as part of the reporting process.
3. Select or type in Austin Healey Club of America when it
asks for a charitable organization and follow the
instructions.
4. Next, you’ll be asked for a provider name. It is very
likely that your providers are not on the List yet, so you
can click “add” to add a provider.
5. When you add a provider, you’ll be asked for their
contact information. There are a few required fields
here…like the kind of information you’d find on a business
card. You’ll be asked to choose some categories for the
service provider (i.e. alternators, painting, etc.)
6. You’ll next be taken to the report page, where you’re
asked to give grades via radio buttons and you’re able to
write comments about your experience.
7. Click submit. This will prompt an email to be sent to
the email address you entered before. Your report will not
be submitted until you verify your email address.
Once you verify your address, the report will be submitted
and you can leave another report. This may seem like a lot
HEALEY MOTOR NEWS SINCE 1974
of steps, but it’s pretty quick…and once you’ve submitted
your first report, it’s very easy to go back and do more!
Additionally, for doing just ONE report you’ll get a FREE
ONE YEAR MEMBERSHIP to the “Classic Car” section
of Angie’s List. You’ll get a special follow-up email with the
details.
Thank you for your support, enjoy!
market on Riverside drive and Marriota in Lakewood
and lived at 215 Kenwood in Burbank were she attended
Catholic school. They then opened a small Department
store next to the market and sold the market. While she
was eighteen and ready to graduate from North
Hollywood High the following happened:
In February of 1950, a Marine friend said that his
girlfriend could get me a blind date with her friend and
she did. Three weekends later she split with her
boyfriend. The next Wednesday while setting in the
barracks she called me for a date and I accepted, the best
thing I ever did. That date led to marriage in Oceanside
California at 1620 on 10JUL50. At At 0530 on 15JUL50 I
left her for Korea. When I returned in May of 1951 she
met me at the dock and handed me this thing wrapped in
a blanked and said, "Here, it's yours".
And that my friends, was the beginning of sixty-one years
seven months and twelve days of a life that will last
forever. During this time she raised two boys, Charles
Conrad and Gorden Eugene, the first born before our
first wedding anniversary and the second one fourteen
months later. Along with raising these three boys (me
included) she opened the J. C. Penny's store on the
corner of Wilson and Harbor in Costa Mesa as the book
keeper and closed it thirty-five years later as the closing
manager. She then took about a two year break at home
but decided that she needed something to do so she
joined the Huntington Beach Retired Senior Volunteer
Police. About three years into this they came out one
day and offered her a job as a regular officer to the
fingerprinting. She took the job. Even after going to
work in fingerprinting and records she still volunteered
once a month to replenish the medical supplies in the
HEALEY MOTOR NEWS SINCE 1974
police cars. During these years she enjoyed traveling the
Western States, Canada and Alaska (By Motorcycle) and
the rest of the world by plane or ship to see the places
which I had seen in the service and also adding anywhere
or anything that came along.
She will physically leave this world on the twenty-second
of March, the day when she turns Eighty. If any one
wishes to talk or to visit her after that simply go to the
ocean and say, "HOWDY", I am sure she would
appreciate it.
VOL 37 NO. 03 MARCH 2012
Hazard Flasher By Charlie Hart
Although many Healey owners may think that it is not
necessary to have hazard flashers, I installed them anyway
because of our extended trips…it is a safety issue. After
several trials, this system is the simplest to understand and
install. I found you must have a 2nd flasher just for the
hazard lights so that they can operate without the ignition
ON. The CA DOT site clearly states “ALL vehicle
domestic or imported vehicles that are sold for the
purpose of operating on a public roadway, SHALL have
four lights that flash in unison…two to the front and two
to the rear. " Old cars like the Healey may be exempt.
However, they say that the vehicle may not be moving
while the flashers are engaged.
VOL 37 NO. 03 MARCH 2012
Peninsula By Tim McNiff
February 4th brought bright sunshine, warm temperatures
and over 250 cars of all types to the Coffee and Cars event
in Rolling Hills Estates. This month’s draw was Italian
cars and there were plenty of Ferraris, Alfa-Romeos,
Lamborghinis, etc. Club members Corkey Holt and Don
Newman showed up in their BJ8s and joined Tim McNiff
and his Bugeye Sprite, which survived the trek from
Glendale. Also in attendance was club member Dave
Beugen who drove his one-of-five aluminum bodied 1948
Bentley. A plethora of cars were looked at, admired and
discussed before the morning ended.
VOL 37 NO. 03 MARCH 2012
Peter Roses Tech Session By Peter Roses
Our day started as last year with a Healey gathering at the
UA Theatre in La Canada. For the first timers, the
members were surprised at the variety and number of
vintage and classic cars on display. The eight Heaelys
proceeded from the UA up to my house on Ocean View in
La Canada for the Tech Session, breakfast and Healey
discussions.
The Tech session topic was on the installation of a scuttle
seals on a 100-6 provided by Steve Gerow. Our expert
installer was club member Russ Thompson who has been
servicing Healeys for almost 40 years. Their first task was
to remove the windscreen to get better access to the seal.
From there it was a matter of removing the old seal,
taking measurements and reinstalling the new one. This
entailed carefully marking the seal, drilling the holes for
the rivets, riveting it in place and trimming the seal to fit.
Two hours later the windscreen was attached and the work
wrapped up. Look to our Club website for images and
detail instructions and tips on the scuttle seal installation.
At noon our members broke for lunch. The CHW
committee members also met separately over lunch to
discuss event planning. After lunch, we made a short drive
through the La Canada, Glendale and Pasadena mountain
roads ending at the Arts Center College of Design in
Pasadena. John Hedblom had suggested our group stop
there and the group was pleasantly surprised with the
location. Our group was able to walk through the campus
design labs and view several galleries. The first depicted
images of the universe and earth and another gallery
showcased designs of cars, boats, bicycle and toys. The
time passed quickly and most of the members needed to
HEALEY MOTOR NEWS SINCE 1974
get on their way. So, the members proceeded down the
hill to the freeway and home.
We want to thank Russ Thompson for providing his time,
tools and knowledge on the seal installation, Steve Gerow
for the car and John Hedblom for suggesting that we go
to the Art Center of Design and thanks to all of our
members for contributing in a great Healey Day.
Attending were Dennis Williams, Steve Gerow, Russ
Thompson, Steven Kingsbury, John Hedblom, Jeff
Boysen, Ed English, Fred Stewart, Don Newman, Mike
Scroggie, Ed Neumeyer, Bill Hoyt, Chic Linde, Charlie
Hart, George Merino, Doug Lyon, Joerg & Marina Hubl,
VOL 37 NO. 03 MARCH 2012
Ortega Drive By Peter Roses
As with many days in the winter a cold and rainy morning
is not uncommon. So was the start to our semiannual Cars
and Coffee - Ortega Highway meet and drive. The drivers
from LA seemed to arrive in Irvine just as the light mist
turned to showers and the drive along Ortega Highway
seemed in question. But as the sun rose the clouds broke
and we transformed into a partly cloudy day with
temperatures on the rise. With eight healeys in
attendance, we displayed our cars and shared Healey
stories.
Before long, the 8:00 o’clock hour had arrived and we
were off to the meeting location at Denny’s on Ortega
Highway. Allowing for any stragglers, five cars headed up
the highway for a late morning snack up the canyon at
HEALEY MOTOR NEWS SINCE 1974
Hell’s Kitchen. Once at Hell’ s Kitchen, the group settled
in for a mid morning beverage and healey talk. To our
surprise, a local British Sport Car collector Reed from
Reed’s Mountain British approached our table and
introduced himself and his sport car business and invited
us to see his 150 plus British sport cars including a Healey.
How could we refuse as it was just up the street? Upon
arrival at British Cars West we piled out of or cars to
inspect what some found as a treasure of cars and parts
and others characterized as the “elephant graveyard of
rusted sport cars”. In either view, the time was well spent
if only to see where many of the cars end up - in a
backyard behind or under a tree. So if you want to see
MG’s Sprites, Triumph’s, Amphacar, Austin Healey BN6,
TR6, MG Midget, TR4 then head to Reed’s Mountain
British on Highway just past Hell’s Kitchen.
Attending the day’s events were George McHarris (Cars
and Coffee only), Peter Roses, John Helblom, Steve
Gerow, Dennis Williams, Jay Miller, and Greg Adams.
