Zulu Wail 10-piece + violin Frank Skinner & Irving Bibo Frank Skinner 1927
Note – “10-piece” generally here denotes the “standard” 1920s line-up of:
2 trumpets (or cornets),
1 trombone,
1 st sax (alto), doubling clarinet and/or soprano sax
2 nd sax (tenor), “ “ “ “ “ “
3 rd sax (alto) “ “ “ “ “ “ and/or baritone sax.
Piano, tuba or string bass, banjo or guitar and drums.
“Rhythm” consists of piano, string bass or tuba, banjo or guitar, and drums.
“Extra clarinet” is generally a part for a solo instrument replacing the 3-man sax section. Largely duplicating the first sax part, it
would conflict if used in addition.
Abbreviations:
b = bass, bjo = banjo, clt = clarinet, cor = cornet, d = drums, g = guitar, pno or p = piano, tbn = trombone (posaune), tpt = trumpet
vln = violin, condr = conductor, lead sht = lead sheet, MS = in manuscript, c/w = coupled with i.e. printed on the reverse of the
preceding arrangement.
LIST “D”
The following arrangements are all in manuscript, and are the meticulous work of Peter and Donald
Benn. Most, including Donald Benn’s arrangements, bear the stamp “P. BENN 16 BROADWAY”.
They are assumed to date from the 1950s, when they constituted part of the repertoire of the band
resident in the Embassy Ballroom, Blackpool – (now part of the Pontin’s organisation). Some of the
Peter /Donald Benn arrangements have already been included in the preceding lists*, but the following
body of work has been kept separate, as it appears to represent a further set of three programmes, one
coded alphabetically, and the other two designated “SA” and “C” respectively (possibly “Small
Arrangement” and “Concert”??), each with its numbering system. Original compositions by Peter and
Donald Benn are entered in bold print. If anybody remembers this scene, I would be glad to have these
details confirmed, and indeed hear more. Thank you. Andy Leggett leggett@wtal.de
