PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
This is the last edition of our newsletter for our academic year 2010‐2011.
We hope that The Quill has been useful and informative.
During the course of the year, we had so many activities that helped
boost our pupils’ confidence and oral skills. Those who came with little or no
English/Hindi/Mandarin are more comfortable using the language now. Not
only were the language skills the main focus this year, but the development of
thinking skills and creating a thinking culture in the school were also
emphasised. Pupils were taught to be critical about issues that concern them as
well as world events. We shall continue to emphasise the skills in the next
academic year along with other skills. IT in education cannot be discounted.
Teachers will be using more IT in the delivery of their lessons. Problem solving is
another area our pupils will be more exposed to.
As the long holiday break approaches, I would like to encourage all
parents to ensure that your child reads regularly and discusses with you about
the stories they have read. Keeping a diary or a scrapbook during the holidays
are also good ideas, as they will encourage children to practise their writing
skills. Your child can share their holiday diaries with other children when they
come back.
Finally, I would like to thank all teachers, non‐teaching staff and parents
for the invaluable help and support you have given to the school. Wishing all of
you a fruitful and happy holiday with your children.
Term 4 has finally come
and gone and the Nursery 1
just finished their first school
year. They started out
hesitant and unsure of
themselves. Now, they are
independent and confident
individuals ready to take on
Growing Up
the next school year by storm. They have experienced a lot of things throughout
the year which will help them develop into well-rounded children in the years to
come. They are now able to share and show care towards their friends. They have
gained self-assurance, can perform onstage and do activities on their own. They are
assertive, ready and excited to recite in class. They have learnt to respect others,
greet teachers and visitors when they visit the class or when they pass by the
hallways.
The Nursery 1s have enjoyed learning about the alphabets. They had art,
cooking and writing practice activities. They had fun with numbers; counting
letters, treasure hunting, cutting out shapes, colouring and painting. They’ve taken
care of the environment by learning how to dispose of trash properly, planting
trees, watering and taking care of the seeds that they planted as they watched
them grow. They’ve learned new songs and developed their motor skills as they
dance and play sports. All in all it has been a fun year for them.
They sure are growing up fast. Have a fun vacation and see you all next year.
Sharing the wonders of nature with the N1s
The Nursery 2s had been busy learning about a lot of things this term.
They’ve mastered their letter sounds and are quite good at counting. They have
taken care of the seeds and trees they planted and observed how it grew and
bloomed into beautiful flowers and plants. They worked hard in class in order to do
well and learnt to work on their own. They constantly push themselves to do better
in whatever activity they are engaged. They also enjoy playing Soccer outdoors.
They are independent individuals, fearless, and ready for the next challenge.
They had fun getting to know and discovering each other throughout the year.
They learnt about loving, caring and accepting each other’s differences. They are
supportive and loyal towards their friends. They have assumed the role of taking
care of N1’s being the youngest group in school. The Nursery 2s are like the
sunflowers and trees that they planted. It took time for them to mature and bloom
into self-assured, independent, loving and caring children. Have a great
summer!!!
Preschool Term 4
We are on the way to K2…
Semester 2 had challenges and fun for K1. Literacy skills had been improving. We
started learning about consonant blends for beginning and ending letters, time and
using money. We did so many activities to make the lessons more fun. Practicing
the use of money was one of the topics they had learnt.
They set up a store and bought toys to school for the buying
and selling activities to apply what they learnt.
We also did “Show and Tell” quite often this semester. We
were excited showing and telling our friends about our favourite vehicles,
vegetables and fruits.
All K1 students are ready to go to K2. Please check
their reasons why they feel they should go to K2.
Shruthi, Felice and Rhowan said that they are
ready to go to to K2 because they were not naughty. While Vanessa, Joey and Viola
said that they are ready to be promoted to K2 because they could write and colour
neatly.
James , Gopika, Simran and Justin had different reasons. They said proudly
that they are able to write their names, days and dates without the teachers’ help,
therefore they are ready to go to K2.
Kimberly, Victoria and Stephanie said that they are ready because they can
read, eat fast and dance well. Jason and Kevin said that they are ready to be in K2
because they could run fast and take a shower on their own.
Preschool Term 4
We have a lot to learn before we finally move up to the 2 nd grade, but there’s nothing to
worry about. Want to know why? Read on.
Maths has become more challenging as we practice how to multiply using concrete
examples. We found some exercises difficult, but we just kept on practicing. We are
encouraged to communicate our thoughts and feelings in English class through writing
compositions. Our main focus is to organise our ideas and practise the convention of
grammar we have learnt. Likewise, we are writing also short stories about animals in Bahasa
Indonesia. We have a lot of fun in reciting and writing poems in Chinese.
Term 4 has been a busy term for us. We have been busy preparing for the musicale and have all
put forth our best efforts. We have made great progress this semester and also had a lot of fun.
We would like to share our simple thoughts and values with you:
“Be accountable for your mistakes.” Raynier and George “Honesty is the best policy.” Viona and Nia
“Have self-control and self discipline.” Jeremy and Darren
“Don’t tell lies.” Calvin and Nathan
“Obey your parents, teachers, and elders.” Daphne and Noor
“Help those who are in need.” Vrede and William
“Respect everyone in school and at home.” Parth
“Study hard and do your homework.. We are now ready to go the next level of
education.” P1s
P2 On Top and Rising
Term 4 Assessment Tasks were given on the 3 rd and 6th week of May in all the core
subjects.
The P2s have learnt the following topics:
In English, spelling drills, making sentences, sharing time, reading aloud, making
short stories, poem recitation and project making are the activities done by them inside
the classroom. They also had their language presentation about ‘Who Am I? Or guessing
game about the Disney character. They gave clues who the character is and they called
and ask a student to guess the character. They had fun and enjoyed this activity a lot.
In Maths, they learnt about fractions, time telling, word problems and
identifying volumes of liquids. They were given a long test to know what they had learnt.
In Bahasa Indonesia, they learned about the prefix me_, be_, ter_, example:
bantu-membantu, layar-berlayar and suffix _ an, example: tulis-tulisan.
In Chinese, they learnt how to make sentences from the new words given,
answering questions from the stories being read to develop their comprehension skills,
when to use punctuation marks and the convention of grammar correctly and making
short stories. They were also given drills in writing the characters.
The P2s are excited to share that they will be on top and rising as they are heading to
the next level of their academic challenge next school year. They have become responsible in
looking after one other. Though, they have learnt to say “Sorry” and handle their differences.
They are having a grand time rehearsing for the coming musicale. We are sure that you
will see talented Antelopes.
Term 4
The school year is about to
end…a very fruitful one for
everyone. Not just bounded
by the four walls of the
classroom, the P3s embraceall
the opportunities the year
offers.
LEARNING
and
GROWTH
We build memories as
we learn in every
lesson…
We grow as we learn
each and every day.
Happiness is…
when our efforts have paid off. This term
is marked by a Semester Assessment 2
which we had worked and prepared so
much. We always wish for a good result,
but realising it can only be possible
through hard work and diligence. We’re
proud of our achievements and we are
looking forward for further opportunities
for us to learn and discover.
10
We took pride in
participating in this
term’s Media information
Week as we presented a
group recitation on the
story “The Frog Prince”
with Colin as the Frog
and Jefferson as the King.
We enjoyed working on
magnets. We made
magnets from all
possible materials
through stroking and
electromagnets.
We learnt basic
Geometry as we made
geoboards to show lines
and angles.
Furthermore, finding
the area and perimeter
was fun by constructing
figures like rockets and
towers.
Happiness is when we are given the
chance to play and perform like the
cute and playful penguins of
Madagascar. With the lights and
sounds of the stage, learning is taken
to a different world. With music and
movement, we enjoy and discover the
bounty in nature and relive the
friendship amongst us.

Countless things happened and myriad experiences exposed the students to
what we call as ‘the garden of opportunities’. Every student has been given the chance to
be at the limelight or center stage and this did not pass by unnoticed.
For four (4) months numerous activities inside and outside the classroom have
been done to showcase or tap students’ talents. In Chinese, students learned to
brainstorm ideas when they had their story making activity. They even got excited
when they had to make sample announcement or invitation in Bahasa Indonesia. Their
poetic prowess was even put to the test as they scribbled words for their pantun. Their
creative and imaginative minds were further challenged when they were asked to make
commercials or TV advertisements in English. Likewise, the class was even productive
when everyone was so original and inventive of his/her own samples of simile and
metaphor. They were so enthusiastic in Science when they had their cooking
demonstration to find out the effects of heat. Needless to say, they were absolutely
amazed with the result afterwards. And who would ever forget what the class did in
their Maths? They were on their toes with their rulers and tape measures as they
studied the area and diameter of the classroom. Each one had fun doing it.
This term is the busiest with Musicale and SA 2 at the top of the list. The P4s
have been working like bees. Engrossed with the revisions for their SA 2 and practices
for the Musicale, they were unmindful of the passing of days. This group of students
has taken the challenge one step at a time.
The numerous activities in school never cease to amaze students’ creativity,
imagination and talent. The time they spent in every activity is never time wasted. The
fun they had and the difficulties they overcome clearly show the balance of life. That is
one can never be truly happy without any sacrifices.
Finally, Term 4 is about to come to its full stop. Everyone deserves a tap on
his/her shoulder for another productive year. Happy days are coming as vacation is
almost near. We all need this hard-earned break for the entire topsy-turvy ride we all
have experienced.
Happy Holidays!
12
Upper Primary Term 4
Holiday is almost near and there are so
many things that the P5 students have
learnt.
In English, they were asked to advertise
the products that they’ve chosen and
presented it during the Media
Information Week. In Bahasa Indonesia, Ms. Bibie asked them to compose a
poem for Ibu Kartini, an Indonesian Heroine who fought for women’s rights.
While in Maths, they measure the different kinds of angles. Lastly they’ve
shown their creativity in making mosaic pictures using origami papers,
drawing abstract shapes with the same shapes and length, a rainbow sun
catcher and a wall sculpture made from tissue roll.
The P5s have accomplished a lot of things just for this term. If you want to see
all their works, stop by in the P5 classroom. Good job P5s!!!!
Upper Primary Term 4
Seemingly endless preparations!
This term demands much from the Primary 6
pupils. Intelligence, skills and talents are
tested to the fore. Cambridge International
Primary Achievement Test (CIPAT) for the
English, Mathematics and Science were given
priorities in their revisions.
Though pressured and stressed from the
demands of CIPAT, Primary 6 has found a
way to celebrate their upcoming graduation.
The various pictorials in graduation toga and
musicale, video recordings for their parents’
tribute and unending rehearsals for musicale
dance, graduation songs and speeches also
have occupied their time.
Congratulations
Primary 6!
GRADUATES of 2011
They spend most of their time reviewing,
getting testing techniques and doing mock
CIPAT exams. They took their tests at SIS
Pantai Indah Kapuk in Jakarta from 26 – 27
May 2011. It was a journey demonstrating
their intellectual readiness as well as personal
accountability and responsibility.
One could hardly believe that they still have the energy to accomplish their
tasks and responsibilities. Certainly, it speaks volumes on how SIS,
Semarang has trained the students in achieving more, completing tasks
and maximising time toward greater heights.
After a long waited moment for the secondary to have a field trip last May was
the most awaited event for them where they have learnt the manners of fine
dining. Yet it was a good experience for them not just the lesson itself but the
sumptuous lunch in a fine dine buffet. They have had a very enjoyable time
during the hotel tour in which they got an idea of how the hotel functions. After
the joyous moments, they prepared themselves for the SA 2 examination which
lasted 3 weeks.
Term 4 has almost ended, but the Secondary revealed themselves as active and
participative in every activity given to them even in these remaining weeks they
were in school.
Now, they are very excited to face the year end activity which is the musicale.
They are very busy practicing with the dance steps and choreography, while on
the other hand they are curious of what to wear as costume during the most
awaited event. Yet this event might be so rigid for them due to a fact that they
will be performing on stage. But as secondary, they took the challenge as their
cup of tea.
Previous terms was such a very challenging term for them, they’ve encountered
a lot of mind boggling lessons and events here and there, but yet they are
being harnessed and moulded to what they will be in the future. Secondary
believes that what they can learn and earn now will reflect to them as a person
and that they can make a big difference in the society, community or even to
the whole world where they can touched lives through their education.
As they strive hard to get the goals done, they can get it done with a big smile
on their faces. Bravo Secondary!!
CCA Updates Term 4
All students get the opportunity to participate in the school’s Extra Curricular
Activities. There are lots of benefits they can get from joining in any of these activities.
First and foremost, it’s about fun for them. Additionally, they form a useful additional
avenue for self expression and help them initiate and cement friendships.
Let’s listen to what these students say about their chosen CCA.
I love sketching, drawing and painting. ~Sam, P4~
I’ve learned how to make poems, stories and brochures. ~Feeby, Sec 3~
I love ballet because I love dancing. ~Fiona, P1~
I’ve learned how to kick the ball hard and make goals. ~Erwin, P3~
I love Badminton because it’s fun and interesting. ~Iriana, P4~
Inventing new things and making them work is a challenge. ~Ryan, P5~
Extracurricular activities are important to academics. The activities the student
participated in tell important aspects about the students such as how they've made a
meaningful contribution to something, what their non-academic interests are, whether they
can maintain a long-term commitment, whether they can manage their time and priorities
and what diversity they'd bring to the student body.
