where area residents face staggering challenges like poverty, crime, language barriers, and the belief that
they don’t deserve a better life. Mercy Center helps reignite hope and determination for those it serves.
Founded in 1990 in response to the needs of local parents, the Center now serves 2,000 people annually;
its growth is driven by the community’s changing needs.
Bronx to liberate themselves from economic poverty. We promote their right to an improved quality of life
by addressing the needs of the whole person, developing skills for healthy family living and economic advancement,
and building a community of respect, hospitality, and non-violence.
20Years of DETERMINATION.
Mercy Center Celebrates 20 Years of Community and Transformation
Twenty years ago, a small group of determined women reached out to their
neighbors in the Mott Haven section of the South Bronx, an area devastated
by generations of crippling poverty and its attending social ills. There were
few services available, and community members felt isolated, abandoned,
and inclined to just give up.
Fortunately, not everyone gave up. Mercy Center’s founders, pictured below,
began using a classroom as a counseling center for parents. In the years that
followed, Mercy Center grew in response to community needs and has
touched the lives of countless thousands. Our programs give participants a
boost of self-esteem along with practical, real-world skills and opportunities.
Though much has changed in our neighborhood over the past 20 years, much
has remained the same. Though only 10 miles from Wall Street, we still sit in
the country’s poorest congressional district. Area residents face staggering
challenges just to get through each day.
We are honored and humbled to celebrate Mercy Center’s 20th Anniversary
this year. As we celebrate, we renew our commitment to continue our important
work for 20 more years and beyond!

September 1, 2010
Dear Friends in Mercy,
Another year has passed, giving us the opportunity to update our friends and supporters.
For the past year, Mercy Center has continued to provide essential skills and services
to help individuals and families in the South Bronx move from merely surviving to
truly thriving. Over 2,000 women, men and children benefited from our services this
past year, supported by more than 200 volunteers and 20 paid staff members.
Our participants and our staff have continued to face the challenges of a difficult economy,
but have tackled these challenges with hard work, optimism and the knowledge that they are part of a community
striving for something better. As a result, we have experienced one of our strongest years yet. Over 20
women and men found improved employment, 25 children improved their reading levels and over 300 parents
learned better communication and parenting skills. In our ESL program, for the first time this year, almost 80% of
those who enrolled in September completed the full year course.
We are proud of these large accomplishments, and of the many small steps towards a better life taken by our
participants each and every day. Couples learn the power of their relationships and build families that are
stronger and more loving. Parents learn to speak English and develop a greater ability to speak with medical professionals
and their children’s schools. Children see futures for themselves more rooted in academic achievement
and contributions to society.
Mercy Center marks a notable milestone this year. We are celebrating 20 years of providing community and
transformation in the South Bronx. The importance of our work is as strong and clear now as it has been at any
point in our history. We are taking this opportunity to look back on how far we have come, and to renew our
commitment to the community we are building.
We can only fulfill our commitment, and achieve success with the women and families of Mercy Center, because
of the commitment of our friends and donors. So as you read these pages, know that the accomplishments that
they highlight and the stories they tell are the product of your support.
FAMILY ALTERNATIVES TO VIOLENCE
6
Mercy Center’s Family Alternatives to Violence Programs work to strengthen vulnerable families
and to counteract the cycle of violence prevalent in our neighborhood. Through our Parenting
and Anger Management courses, Mercy Center teaches over 300 women and men
effective, non-violent ways for parents to communicate with their children. These courses are
often the first steps taken by many parents to improve their lives.
Proven Programming
Our classes use an effective curriculum called Active Parenting. The curriculum incorporates
a text book and videos, and is delivered during 11 weekly sessions, led
by staff and volunteers. Our testing shows that students in our classes learn new
knowledge about parenting, and new skills to communicate with their children,
breaking the cycle of violence in their families.
“I feel like a new person. I learned
how to treat my children in order to
interact with them in a better way. I
am applying the lessons that I
learned in the classes to everyday
situations in my life, and I see a total
change”.
-Recent Parenting class graduate
20 Years of Teaching Non-Violence
Parenting classes were one of the first offerings
at Mercy Center when we opened our
doors, and have long been an extension of
our commitment to spreading non-violence
in our community. Our offerings in this area
have grown as we’ve recognized the need
for specialized classes in Spanish and for
teen parents.

All classes are offered free of charge. We accommodate the many varied schedules and languages
of our participants by offering at least one day, one evening, one English, and one
Spanish section of both Parenting and Anger Management over the course of the year. We
also offer a parenting class specifically for teen parents.
“I learned to treat my
children with respect, to
not yell and scream, and
now they respect me.”
- Parenting class graduate
Did You Know?
Reports of child abuse and neglect are
88% higher in our neighborhood of Mott
Haven than the rest of New York City.
“The most important lesson I learned is that change
is a process. You have to be willing to change, to
realize that your way of doing something was
wrong. “
Family Leaders Take Charge!
2O Years of Strong Families
On May 10, 2010, nine Mercy Center participants graduated from the inaugural class of our Family
Leadership Program. These eight women and one man have been trained to serve as leaders in the
Family Development Program. As Family Leaders, the graduates will be asked to recruit new families
for the program, and support Mercy Center staff by leading groups of families on trips and in workshops.

Results:
The goal of the Family Development Program
is to strengthen families by offering
education, improving communication, providing
resources, meeting basic needs, and
creating community. When surveyed, families
report that we are meeting this goal:
100% of families reached at least one goal
they had set for themselves.
93% of parents agreed or strongly agreed
that the Family Development Program
helped improve the communication in
their families.
82% of parents agreed or strongly agreed
that the Family Development Program
made their relationship with their
spouses stronger.
Five components of the program:
Family Worker Relationship: Each participating
family is matched with a trained Family
Worker, with whom they collaborate to
establish and work towards family goals.
Mercy Center Program Participation: Family
Development participants are encouraged
to participate in all Mercy Center programs.
Specialized Workshops: Workshops are developed
around current issues common
among Family Development families, bringing
participating families together to discuss
the topics.
Family Weekends: Three times a year, groups of
families spend a weekend together in
Goshen, NY at the Highbridge Empowerment
Center, embracing the opportunity to
enjoy the outdoors and each other while
engaging in workshops on topics of personal
and family development.
Supportive Community of Families: The families
in Family Development have developed
relationships through their participation
that have evolved into a community of
support, in which families learn from and
assist each other.
ESL & IMMIGRATION SERVICES
Mercy Center’s English as a Second Language (ESL) courses are offered free of charge to residents
of the Mott Haven neighborhood of the South Bronx. We offered three different levels
of English classes to 362 students in the 2009-2010 program year.
Mercy Center’s ESL students are representative of the neighborhood at large. Primarily immigrants
from Central and South American countries, these men and women are determined to
learn the English language and American culture. Students are driven by a strong desire to
help their children with homework, communicate with doctors, or find a better-paying job.
Their dedication, and at times desperation, inspires them to come to class early every morning
to study after having worked a 12-hour overnight shift, or after staying up all night with a
sick child, or when they have no food to eat. Their commitment inspires their teachers, and
sets a positive example for their children and neighbors.
Changing Lives, One Person at a Time: Ana’s Story
Ana’s ESL teacher was concerned, because she didn’t seem connected in class. The teacher
found out from Ana that she was suffering from severe emotional problems. Her doctor and
family had urged her to try a new activity, so she had enrolled in ESL to appease them. The
teacher began providing careful encouragement, congratulating her for being in class at all
and for any effort she made to participate. Tiny successes began to appear – from completing
an activity in class with another student to participating in an oral activity successfully. Ana
became more engaged while she wrestled with her problems. Then the big success – Ana
scored a 97% on her midterm exam – the highest score in the class!

20 Years of Responding to Needs
A hallmark of Mercy Center’s approach has
always been to respond to the needs of the
community. In 2002, when the number of new
immigrants in our neighborhood began to increase,
we realized the need was strong for
English classes. We found some volunteers
willing and able to provide instruction, and
started with a class of 5. Now 8 years later, the
program has grown into a core component of
our work, and the primary way women and
men are introduced to our services.
Volunteers Make All the Difference
Volunteers have always been at the heart of Mercy Center. In
the 2009-2010 program year, 27 volunteers donated over 3,500
instructional hours to our ESL program. Our volunteers are a
fascinating community of individuals from all walks of life, including
students, retirees, homemakers, and full- and part-time
workers. As varied as they are, they all share a common desire
to help members of this community learn to read, write, and
speak English.
Results:
79% of students who enrolled in September
persisted and completed the course
in June.
A total of 203 students from the 2009-
2010 year completed their level and will
be moving to the next instructional level
in September 2010.
On average, students scored 80% on the
final written exam for their course.
EMPLOYMENT YES! & ARRA
12
Employment Yes! is a computer skills training and job readiness program, designed to meet
the needs of over 200 low-income women in the community who have families to provide for,
yet face many barriers to employment. In our neighborhood, incomes are low, unemployment
high, and opportunities bleak. This is particularly true for women of the community, who often
face violence in their homes and lead families by themselves. Many women in the Mott Haven
community suffer from an extraordinary loss of self esteem and confidence due to the cycle of
poverty and abuse. Education levels are also very low among our participants.
20 Years of Imparting Skills for Success
Providing skills for economic empowerment has
been a goal of Mercy Center from our earliest
days. We began with simple keyboarding classes,
and have expanded the program to provide more
employable skills. We launched our first Business
Training course in 1998. Over the years we have
also helped individual women pursue entrepreneurial
dreams by linking them with the necessary
resources and services.
Results: During FY 2010, the
Employment Yes! Program
placed 10 unemployed women
in jobs. The average starting
salary of these women is
$13.25 an hour, which
amounts to a yearly salary of
over $25,000 a year. Ten families
that were struggling to
survive are now on their way
to thriving.

The Employment Yes! Program involves two main components:
Skills Training courses, which provide women with the computer and “soft” skills
needed to get an administrative office job and;
Job Development, which provides one-on-one support throughout the job search process
and into employment.
Special Initiative: Federal Funding Helps ESL Students Get Jobs
Mercy Center was awarded targeted funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment
Act (ARRA) federal stimulus funds to offer employment services to ESL participants for the
2009-2010 fiscal year. Participants received job readiness preparation through individual job
counseling and monthly workshops covering various topics from resume writing to immigrant
worker rights.
This special program promoted the empowerment of women and their families by developing
their skills for economic advancement. In particular, the program targeted low-wage immigrant
workers and included an educational component on American labor and safety laws to
prevent the exploitation of workers.
A total of 85 women and men in our ESL classes sought the services of this program to assist
them in their search for new or improved work. This community faces many barriers to employment,
with limited English skills being primary.
13

CHAMPIONS YOUTH PROGRAMS
14
The needs of South Bronx children are great. Mercy Center children live in a neighborhood
where poverty and violence surround them and where quality programs for children are severely
lacking. Children in our participant families often do not receive the academic support
they need to obtain a solid education, as their parents are unable to help due to limited English
or literacy skills. Mott Haven is ranked among the highest risk communities in New York
City for children in all data categories.
The ideas that we foster – mutual respect, conflict resolution, and compassion – are countercultural
in our neighborhood and in the lives of Mercy Center children. We employ a range of
strategies to empower children to reach their full potential and embrace non-violence.
Through CHAMPIONS, we provide children with educational support, ongoing encouragement,
and wider exposure to the neighborhoods and cultural attractions of New York City.
Children Have A Major Place In Our Neighborhood Services – CHAMPIONS!
Academic Year programs run from September through June and engage a core group of
students daily or weekly. These include our After School Program, Saturday Reading Enrichment,
Children's Chorus, and Resolve, a pregnancy prevention curriculum and support
group for teens.
Short-term and Ad Hoc Enrichment programs are scheduled throughout the year as resources
allow. These include Winter, Spring, and Summer Camps hosted by visiting college
students, and specialized camps and activities.
Special Partnerships provide enrichment opportunities through ongoing relationships
between Mercy Center and other service providers. Through these partnerships, Mercy
Center children take advantage of dance classes, performing arts camps, and sleep away
camp opportunities.

Hats Off to Berenice!
Berenice is a six year old
Kindergartener, who reads
at a 2nd grade level.
Her love of learning is
nurtured here at Mercy
Center, where she is a participant
in both our After
School and Saturday Reading
Enrichment Programs.
Mom (and Family Leader)
Irma, couldn’t be prouder.
Irma is learning English in
our ESL classes so she can
help her daughter continue
to succeed in school.
Mercy Center’s youth – our CHAMPIONS – need assistance to
improve their performance in school and increase their facility in
the English language. They need a safe haven in which to learn,
where they have opportunities to expand their horizons and
reach their potential. Most of all, they need a steady, multi-year
commitment to help them obtain the academic and personal
foundations required to build a strong and hopeful future for
themselves. Our CHAMPIONS Programs (Children Have A Major
Place In Our Neighborhood Services) provide this.
Learning to Read at Mercy Center
Learning to Read at Mercy Center improves the reading
and comprehension skills of Mercy Center children. This
program, implemented during our After School and Saturday
Reading Enrichment Programs, builds on the tools of
AfterSchool KidzLit, a research-based and tested curriculum
designed to get children excited about reading.
This curriculum is culturally relevant to the population we
serve in the South Bronx and celebrates diversity. To determine
the effectiveness of Learning to Read, we assess
the children at the beginning and end of the program. We
are thrilled to report that 97% of participating children
improved their reading levels this year. Just as importantly,
the children now love reading.
15

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT
16
To truly accomplish our mission, we must provide women in our community and their families
with the opportunity to tap into and develop their inner strength, and to connect to the
world around them. Our Personal Development Programs are designed to do just that. These
programs provide creative outlets through art workshops, teach stress management techniques
rooted in ancient traditions, and empower women to take steps to have their voices
heard by those with political power. For some, these programs offer a rare moment of relaxation.
For others, they can be life-changing. We would not be able to provide these services
without the volunteers who deliver them. Close to 250 people participated in these programs
during the 2009-2010 program year.
Every Individual Counts
With a grant from the Hispanic Federation,
Mercy Center joined community-based
organizations across the country to ensure
that the decennial census resulted in a
complete and accurate count of our
neighborhood. Volunteer leaders were
trained in the census form and Mercy Center
served as a place where neighborhood
residents could get questions answered.
Exercise for People With Arthritis
Through a partnership with the Arthritis
Foundation, Mercy Center offered a
new exercise program designed specifically
for people with arthritis. These
classes are an accessible form of exercise
for those with and at risk of this
debilitating condition. Mercy Center
participants were grateful for the opportunity
to learn these new techniques
for staying healthy.

Program Spotlight: Spirituality Group
This year, Mercy Center’s English Spirituality group for women celebrated
10 years of being led by volunteer Ann Harris Jacobs. Members
of this group meet weekly to reflect on readings, to connect these
readings to their everyday lives, and to find strength and hope in their
relationships with each other. What started as a spirituality group for
African American women has grown organically over the years into a
collection of women from many backgrounds. What they have in common
is a desire to be nourished spiritually, and to do that with and for
each other. Ann has been a source of wisdom and peace for the
women who join her every week.
20 Years of Nurturing
the Self
For almost 20 years, our Personal
Development offerings
have empowered women to
tap into the spirit of who they
are. The result? New hope and
growth for countless women.
Participants cultivate inner
peace, strength, and the will to
move through the challenges
of their lives with a spirit of
determination.
Music at Mercy!
Mercy Center continued to
offer a concert series in 2009-
2010. New York area musicians
performed everything from
Latin music to classical. After
each performance, children
were invited to handle the
instruments and learn how
they worked. There were also
performances by our children’s
chorus and its director, Sarah
Pillow.
20Years of LEADERSHIP.
Mercy Center exists and thrives because of the commitment and generosity
of many individuals and organizations. Mercy Center is led by a Board of Directors,
33% of whom must be from the community we serve. The Directors
are assisted by our Board of Advisors, which provides guidance and direction
on the ongoing fiscal stability of the Center. A staff of 24, paid and volunteer,
work with countless volunteers to deliver our unique programs.
