Patron of the Conference 

I am very pleased to be the patron of the 2009 International 

Conference on Quality Engineering in Software Technology 

(CONQUEST 2009) in my hometown Nuremberg. After the 

Conference had taken place in Berlin and Potsdam in the 

last three years, it has now returned to its roots: Twelve 

years ago, the Arbeitskreis Software Qualität Franken e.V. 

(ASQF e.V.) for the first time invited software developers 

from industry and research to an exchange of experiences 

on software quality standards to Nuremberg. In the meantime, 

CONQUEST has become an internationally acknowledged 

information platform for CEOs and experts from 

industry and research for quality assurance and further 

training of specialised personnel in the field of software. 

Modern information and communications technologies 

(ICTs) are an essential factor for more economic growth 

and employment. ICTs are also growth accelerators and innovation 

drivers in many further sectors due to the combination 

of ICTs and traditional products. In order to enhance 

the international competitiveness of Germany as an ICT 

location, the German Federal Chancellor in the year 2006 

initiated the IT Summit process, a high-ranking dialogue 

with senior representatives from the political, economic 

and scientific fields. The preparation of the IT Summits 

is coordinated by the Federal Ministry of Economics and 

Technology. The Third National IT Summit, which took 

place in Darmstadt on 20 November 2008, again highlighted 

the great growth opportunities of ICTs for German industry 

and in particular underlined the strategic significance of a 

software and (IT) services industry that is competitive at 

the global level for the overall economy and how important 

it is to meet the related need for skilled labour in this area. 

I am pleased that the quality assurance of software products 

and the qualification of ICT specialists are again issues 

at the very top of the agenda of CONQUEST 2009 and 

that special attention is paid to the cooperation with this 

year’s partner country, India. In view of these topics, the 

Conference makes an important contribution to the implementation 

of the decisions that were taken on the occasion 

of the latest IT Summit and to the further strengthening 

of Germany as an ICT location. Against this background, I 

wish CONQUEST much success and all participants many 

interesting contacts, talks and ideas.

Conference Chair 

Dear CONQUEST participants, speakers and exhibitors, 

I like to welcome you to the 12th International Conference 

on Quality Engineering in Software Technology in Nuremberg, 

Germany, September 16-18, 2009. We welcome our 

companions, newcomers, friends and colleagues from all 

over the world. We compiled the conference program out 

of over 80 submissions with the intent to offer a high-quality 

technical program both for academia and industry. We like 

to thank everybody that helped us making CONQUEST 2009 

a high-potential event. 

Let me share with you some recent thoughts about quality 

engineering in software technologies. Since the software 

crisis back in the 1960ies, the software industry and research 

emphasized the specifics and differences of software as 

compared to any form of hardware. I think it was right that 

time as the software field had to be established. However, I 

question that we are still right these days. Software is basically 

a means to make systems more efficient, more handy, 

more functional, and alike. Sure, software and all development 

artefacts have a standing on their own. We may however 

have to reconsider what we can learn from others. 

For example, I learnt at university that as software is virtual 

it cannot age and cannot have signs of usage, hence does 

not need much if at all maintenance. Today, we now know 

this to be a bit different: there is software being in use for 

30 and more years. The tools with which the software had 

been developed years back are not available or in use any 

more. The environments in which the software was running 

changed as well. Along its usage, the software was 

extended, modified and adapted to changes in its environment. 

All this makes often a clean architecture corrupted 

– the software becomes less elastic for further changes, 

which is comparable to ageing materials. Software maintenance 

has to gain more attention in our community. Methods 

for handling software evolution to ensure that software 

continues to meet organisational and business objectives 

in a cost effective way are needed. For example, software 

renovation is an approach to address issues of ageing software 

by refactoring them to current settings. On the other 

hand, immateriality of software is responsible for another 

phenomenon: software is easily copied. By that, software 

duplicates, also called clones, are created right at hand 

and give rise for another quality and maintenance problem: 

think about a failure being reported, fault being identified 

and corrected – however, in one clone only – not in the others. 

It would be appreciated to see more contributions in 

the direction of software evolution and quality assurance 

of evolving software at CONQUEST. 

Let me come back to the comparison with other engineering 

fields and consider e.g. how other fields address issues

of duplicated work. At first, they realized that copies and/ 

or duplicated developments are not an economic option. 

Standardization is a well-established means to manifest 

the knowledge in a field, to enable effective new developments 

on a higher technical level just by reuse and inclusion 

of existing work, and to prevent errors being repeated 

and fixes not being spread in the field. Along with object 

and component orientation, standardized libraries were 

envisioned but did not become reality. With model orientation, 

we discuss comparable ideas of sharing information 

and know-how in form of models – and again it will only 

become possible if we stop thinking that one is the only one 

that can solve a specific problem although it was solved 

that many times before. If we manage to install engineering 

discipline and culture within software technologies, we 

are better off at the end – despite tighter constraints that 

we impose. Then, we would need new practical methods 

for interoperable software components, which are not only 

technical but semantically interoperable. We would need 

effective methods for composition and integration and 

corresponding efficient methods for verification and validation. 

Other development processes would be needed: 

making explicit the review, selection and integration of existing 

components. There is none for the moment, even the 

revised V-model XT does not address this. 

Let me conclude by repeating our wish to make CONQUEST 

the place where pressing issues in software development, 

evolution and quality assurance are discussed on a high 

technical level with clear links to industrial adoption. I am 

sure it would be more compelling to address open issues 

even if we do no have final solutions but that will allow us 

to further the software quality engineering field. I also vote 

for less ignorance to other engineering fields to learn from 

others and to advance our field faster. Despite the differences 

of software, the aim to design, construct and develop 

systems that finally meet the quality requirements put 

forward by users, stakeholders, manufacturers and alike 

unifies all engineers. 

Let us have interesting exchanges of point of views, of 

results, of new developments and let us work together at 

strengthening software quality engineering into a matured 

engineering discipline.

Ladies and gentlemen, 

As Director of the International Software Quality Institute I 

am glad to welcome you to this year’s Conference on Quality 

Engineering in Software Technology (CONQUEST). Over 

50 speakers contribute to the program that shows the status 

quo of the current professional debate. The talks were 

chosen by a program committee consisting of 20 members 

from 18 countries. Our special appreciation goes to these 

reviewers and all the authors who handed in their papers. 

The CONQUEST is held for the 12th time now. Experts from 

all over the world can rely on the tradition of having a highquality 

program for the conference often referred to as 

“class reunion of the software developer scene”; it goes 

without saying that professional discussions, new ideas 

and networking will have an excellent framework. In 2009 

we have decided to return to our roots in Nuremberg to 

mark this tradition. 

Over a decade ago the cry for “Setting Quality Standards” 

resounded from Nuremberg. Stemming from this idea, a 

globally successful model of worldwide quality assurance 

in software development ensued. The CONQUEST has always 

promoted and inspired this development. 

I would like to address a particular thanks to the Software 

Community – the visitors of our conference; a worldwide 

network of experts who work persistently and devotedly 

for the continuing improvement of the product quality in a 

field that is of ever increasing impact to the current market. 

The key to success lies in the high-level and always up-todate 

qualification of those who develop and test software. 

The International Software Quality Institute has – in cooperation 

with its partners – developed and established a 

broad spectrum of certified further education schemes, so 

that different competencies can be proved in a recognized 

and standardized way. 

I am very happy to see that the partners and participants of 

our conference have not been put off by the current difficult 

situation on the international markets. They have enabled 

us to hold the CONQUEST in the high quality you are used to. 

The stability of networks and connections is put to the test 

in hard times like these. We have passed this test, because 

we know that only exchange, only the further development 

of our competencies, only the steady improvement of our 

quality can guarantee us economical stability. In times of 

crisis it is essential to invest in qualification. Therefore it is 

the right decision to visit the CONQUEST now: Not instead 

of, but precisely because of the current circumstances. 

Representatives of politics are aware of the impact of our 

conference on its location and the industry as such. Thus

Keynote on 16 September: “Trends in Innovation – Technologies, 

Networks and Clusters” 

Josef Nassauer studied mechanical and process engineering 

at the Technical University of Munich. Late 1986, Josef 

Nassauer became Research Director at the new European 

Research and Development Centre of Kraft Foods in Munich, 

part of Philip-Morris Companies. His responsibility 

was the coordination of scientific services, the development 

of novel processes and the worldwide coordination 

of strategical process engineering projects between plants 

in USA, Europe and Australia. 

In 1992 Josef Nassauer was awarded the Philip-Morris- 

Chairman’s-Award in New York for an outstanding membrane 

technology innovation. In 1990 he was also offered 

the position of Head of the Institute of Food Process Engineering 

at the ETH Zürich. In December 1997 Josef Nassauer 

was nominated honorary professor by the Technical 

University of Munich. In 1995 Josef Nassauer accepted 

the position as chief executive of Bayern Innovativ Ltd., 

which was newly established by the Free State of Bavaria 

as a corporation for innovation and technology transfer in 

Nuremberg. The main objectives are to intensify technology 

transfer between science and industry as well as to enhance 

technology orientated cooperations across branches. 

Thereby, its work is focused on 10 future-orientated technologies 

and 10 branches important for Bavaria’s economy.

Keynote on 17 September: “The Model-Driven Test Design 

Process” 

Dr. Jeff Offutt is Professor of Software Engineering at 

George Mason University and leads the MS and PhD programs 

in Software Engineering. He has published over 115 

refereed research papers and is co-author of the textbook 

Introduction to Software Testing. He is editor-in-chief of 

Wiley’s journal of Software Testing, Verification and Reliability; 

steering committee chair for the IEEE International 

Conference on Software Testing, Verification, and Validation; 

program chair for ICST 2009; and on the technical 

board of advisers for Certess, Inc.

Problems and Future Solutions” 

Vipul is a Co-founder of PureTesting (www.puretesting.com) 

and the President of the Indian Testing Board (ITB), a member 

of ISTQB. In over 15 years of testing experience with 

leading software companies, he has led test teams for various 

types of products such as Acrobat Reader, routers and 

network management products, mail and database access 

products for mobile devices and desktops. These have involved 

working on various handheld, embedded, and multiple 

desktop platforms. 

Vipul regularly presents keynotes, papers and tutorials at 

various national and international conferences. He has 

won several awards including the best paper award at 

STAREast 2006 and the Logica CMG Triple Star Award for 

the most original contribution at EuroStar 2005, Denmark. 

He also received the Testing Thought Leadership award at

Dr.-Ing. Peter Liggesmeyer is a Full Professor at the University 

of Kaiserslautern, Germany (Department of Computer 

Science). He holds a chair in Software Engineering: Dependability, 

and is director of the Fraunhofer Institute for 

Experimental Software Engineering (IESE). His research 

interests are in software engineering for embedded systems, 

software quality, system safety and reliability, and 

visualization of software systems. 

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Liggesmeyer is the author of more than 80 

publications including several books.

“Creating Real-World Test Cases using Extension to Noun 

and Verb technique” 

This tutorial presents an Extension of Noun and Verb Technique. 

Most of the structured test design techniques are 

useful when detailed requirements are available. Even with 

detailed requirements, the existing test design techniques 

leave many holes some of which are covered by ad-hoc 

or exploratory testing and other experience based techniques. 

Extension to noun and verb technique can help create 

test cases even when requirements are sketchy. This 

technique can help create test cases of varying complexity 

and it also allows creation of scenario based tests. 

The technique has successfully been used on various projects 

with great results.

Load & performance currently belongs to the top ten on the 

list of most critical aspects of a company its credibility, either 

towards the internal productivity or even the external 

visibility of the company via websites. But what does “Load 

& Performance” mean for the different parties during the 

life-cycle the application and how effective can we measure 

them? The most nagging questions: “How well will our 

servers cope with high volume of users? Did the design of 

our back-end architecture meet the “real world” its expectations? 

How our end-users and customers use our systems?” 

To provide founded answers instead of guessing 

the probable outcome of these questions, a well planned 

and controlled Load & Performance test is needed. 

This half day tutorial will get you acquainted with the used 

terminology and aspects of Load & Performance testing; 

giving you a first insight into the differed process stages 

needed to setup successful the load test. We will touch the 

aspect of information, which is requested at meetings concerning 

the design and architecture of a load test. Also we 

will talk about the ways of implementation, testing aspects 

& the use of measurements. Tips regarding the load test 

automations, how to improve setting a stage for a load test 

as well as an insight on what needs to be modify scripts will 

be provided during the sessions.

„Writing Software Requirements - Excellence is not difficult” 

This tutorial will change you view on requirements. We 

will address and analyze the typical problems of specifying 

requirements and we will collectively develop solutions 

for the problems addressed. After a short presentation of 

the essential quality criteria for requirements and some 

hands-on methods and hints for writing good requirements, 

the participants will analyse some requirements in groups. 

After discussing the analysis results, the participants will 

apply their new skills to improve some of the requirements. So 

you see this is more a tutorial with workshop characteristics. 

The participants are asked to bring in their individual problems 

with requirements and the tutorial will focus on solving 

these problems. Therefore the participants are asked 

to send their ‘problems’ to the conference organizer 2 

weeks in advance in advance, so that we can anonymise 

the requirements and select some to be used in the tutorial.

„Test Management under Crisis” 

In the next years, we shall be facing a tremendous change 

in testing, as the visibility of what we do to the business 

will be a must, reducing costs will be a must, and keeping a 

high level of quality to our products will be a must as well. 

Test managers will be facing a few major challenges: 

• Improving testing processes to the optimum and the 

quality maturity of their products 

• Manage risks and respond quickly to market needs 

(preventive and corrective actions) 

• Manage their professional team better – building an 

efficient and effective testing team that can handle 

the workload with advanced methods, procedures 

and tools. 

In my tutorial I shall review the current challenges and the 

near future challenges of test managers. We shall go over 

what is necessary to do in order to improve our processes 

starting with identifying the problems and challenges analyzing 

them and suggesting a way forward (using an enhanced 

root cause analysis method). We shall discuss how 

to better manage our testing risks, how to present them to 

management, and I shall present 2 excel tools that helped 

me organize my priorities and work. 

Last but not least, we shall discuss how to build winning 

testing teams and what is important in building such a team 

from personal and professional perspectives. Improvement 

of processes and high level of maturity in risk management 

have shown in the past numbers of 15-30% improvement in 

cost and/or product coverage for such efforts. 

So, if you have 10 people in your team, you can reduce cost 

by 0.5-3 people’s effort, investing it back into coverage, automation, 

and better confidence in deployment.

“Agile Software Development in the Large” 

A lot of people still believe that agile software development is 

for small teams only. However, the agile value system and the 

principles behind as stated in the agile manifesto don’t say 

anything about team or project size. Furthermore the projects 

I’m working on are typically large, distributed and mission 

critical. Therefore, several years ago I took the challenge 

and tried agile software development in the large. 

Meanwhile I made the similar experience on many large 

projects: Also large and even distributed teams can benefit

not achieving to full benefits of it yet. 

This tutorial will address practical experiences at several 

companies and the critical success factors for the review 

and inspection process. Reviews and inspection often fail 

due to the lack of trained and dedicated moderators. In fact 

becoming a moderator is an opportunity for most testers 

for many reasons, including: 

• by performing the moderator role you are involved early

• you start working together with developers and not 

against them 

• it contributes to better requirements which will ease the 

testing process 

• a tester should have good social skills, a vital skill for a 

moderator as well

RFID Management (Radio Frequency Identification) 

Ubiquitous Computing – a comprehensive “informatization“ and networking of the world and its many 

objects. RFID is the best-known technology of this vision and keeps gaining importance for the industry 

– especially in the field of logistics, but also in transponders for time recording, for the identification 

of people, for marking pets, zoo animals or cattle, or else for the immobilizer systems in cars. Given the 

versatile areas of application and the ever increasing implementation of RFID-technology there is a high 

demand for qualification in this field. 

In addition to communicating basic technical knowledge, the essential building blocks of the certification 

program include project management, implementation strategies as well as IT and data management. 

Furthermore, economic views and issues of data security and data protection are given particular 

attention. 

V-Modell ® XT 

V-Modell®XT is a technologically modern, flexible and open process model, which is also adaptable 

to a range of project- and organization-specific framework conditions. Compulsory for project handling
