works, damming, water pollution, steamboats and timber
Owing to their low reproductive rate and high visibility,
sturgeons were particularly hard hit by what he termed
‘human greed’, i.e. overfishing.
6. While the often-anecdotal ethnohistorical and literary examples
cannot be used directly in the interpretation of archaeological
sturgeon finds, they show the complexity of
attitudes (mostly related to the immense size and particular
appearance of sturgeons) that are unlikely to have developed
only in recent centuries.
Note
1. Some Final Mesolithic burials at Lepenski Vir (cf. Bonsall et al.
2004, this volume) are oriented parallel to the Danube with their
heads pointing downstream, but this is not a consistent feature of
Mesolithic burials from the Iron Gates.
