Marco Antonio De Dominis
(1560-1624)
A Catalogue from the British Library Collection
Compiled by Milan Grba

Introduction
The catalogue gives 78 entries of many different editions of De Dominis’s original works and the works about
him published by his contemporaries and up to present times. The entries are given chronologically spanning
395 years between them, from De Dominis’s first scientific publication De radiis visus et lucis published
in Venice in 1611 to the collection of conference proceedings, covering many aspects of his life and work,
published in Split in 2006. In total the catalogue provides information of about 106 items 1 and their physical
locations, i.e. shelfmarks in the British Library collection. Literary labours that are usually attributed to De
Dominis by his biographers and scholars, such as the first translations of Bacon’s Latin work into Italian, are
not included in this catalogue since such works omit any acknowledgement of his intellectual contribution.
In Britain De Dominis published the majority of his works in Latin and Italian and his publications are circulated
and universally read in the rest of Europe in English, French, German and Dutch. De Dominis’s main theological
and his major work De Republica Ecclesiastica, envisaged in ten books, was published in three massive volumes:
the first two volumes were published in London in 1617 and in 1620, containing the first six books (volume
one contained books one to four and volume two books five and six); and the third volume, published in
Hanau in Germany in 1622 2 , should have included the remaining four books but it contained only the seventh
and ninth books. Books eight and ten were never published and these books are also missing from the parts of
De Dominis’s original manuscript kept in the Bodleian Library (Duke Humfrey’s Library) in Oxford. The British
Library also holds the second edition of De Republica Ecclesiastica published in Heidelberg in 1618 3 and the
third edition published in Split in 2003-6 4 .
The present catalogue does not contain entries on the published relevant sources such as Calendar of State
Papers, Domestic series 5 nor Calendar of State Papers and Manuscripts relating to English Affairs 6 nor Spisi
Tajnog vatikanskog arhiva XVI-XVIII veka 7 (Acts of the Vatican’s Secret Archive of the 16th to18th century)
and does not include entries on De Dominis in the British Library Manuscript Catalogue 8 . Similarly, periodical
articles are not included in this catalogue. There are several titles listed in this catalogue that provide useful
bibliographies on De Dominis, among others: N. Malcolm, De Dominis 1560-1624: Venetian, Anglican,
Ecumenist and relapsed heretic (1984), 141-152; V. Tudjina Gamulin, ed., A manifestation of the motives
(1997), 193-200; A. Maletić, ed., Marko Antun de Dominis: zaboravljeni genij (2004), 65-71; and I.
Martinović, ‘Anotirana bibliografija o De Dominisovim raspravama De radiis visus et lucis i Euripus’, in
M. A. De Dominis, Opera physica = Radovi iz fizike, ed., A. Maletić and D. Novaković (2005), 325-341 9 .
1 In the process of compiling this catalogue, most of the records found in the British Library main catalogue have been updated and one item,
previously without a catalogue entry, has now been catalogued (cat. entry no. 39).
2 In the three volume set of the first edition of De Republica Ecclesiastica held by the British Library, a copy of the third volume was published
by Sumptibus Viduae Jonae Rosii in Frankfurt in 1658. See catalogue entry no. 13.
3 Three volumes, published Heidelbergæ, Francofurti ad Moenum, Francofurti, 1618-58. See cat. entry no. 24.
4 M. A. De Dominis, De Republica Ecclesiastica, ed., A. Maletić (2003-06), see cat. entry no. 74.
