LSI 620J JBOD
Scale and Expand with Cost-Effective
Enterprise-Class JBODs
System Builders Guide to LSI 600 series JBOD System Configuration
Lower total cost of ownership and
reduce hardware investments to support
data growth plans.
Today’s more robust motherboards with
multi-core processors and extensive RAM allow
for a higher level of application use, which
drives more data requirements. Simply add
storage without the additional cost associated
with a server build using JBOD configurations.
LSI 600 series JBODs are cost effective and
offer maximum flexibility for both 3Gb/s and
6Gb/s technologies.
Gain more pereformance and optimise
existing host based storage systems.
Your business most likely requires high
efficiencies and leverages hardware to get the
most of your systems. You can easily add JBOD
enclosures to an existing system to increase
the number of drives available as an array
or volume with the capability to improve
performance. Dynamically scale with the ability
to cascade multiple JBOD units using 6Gb/s
built-in expander technology.
Reduce heat buildup and disk vibrations
with highly engineered design features.
Heat is the enemy of a hard drive and can reduce
its life. JBODs from LSI are designed to house
multiple drives in a single enclosed structure,
providing a cool thermal environment which
increases the lifespan and isolates vibrations
from one drive to another, improving long-term
reliability. This robust construction reduces
heat issues and helps maintain performance by
minimising read/write errors that result from
drives having to perform extensive retries due
to poor enclosure design.
Easy system monitoring with built-in
LED indicators for troubleshooting
and maintenance.
Solutions Brief
Quickly add more capacity to your existing storage systems in order to meet
growing user data demands. Enterprise-class 6Gb/s SATA+SAS JBODs from LSI
are simple modular solutions to scale and expand host system configurations.
LSI 600 series JBODs support both 2.5” and 3.5” drives and offer a high-quality,
cost-effective alternative for adding more storage to existing servers. Help your
customers to realise benefits above and beyond meeting basic user needs.
In data centre environments, identifying
issues with drives is crucial. The LSI 600 series
JBODs include extensive LED support for
visual confirmation of enclosure and drive
status. As part of the enclosure services it has
monitoring for power, overheating, standby
mode, unit location identification, and service
required with easily identified LED indicators.
Status for drives is also covered with LED’s for
power, service required, and safe drive removal
that is critical in JBOD configurations since
removing the wrong drive at the wrong time
can negatively affect the array or volume.
Increase availability with redundancy and
modules that are easily replaced.
Most applications require high system uptime
– and system shut down is something to avoid
whenever possible. Maintain LSI 600 series
JBOD units without shutting down the system.
Dual power supplies are standard on all units
High Performance
Computing
In this environment it is essential to run multiple
process server applications with the highest level
of efficiency. Typically, smaller blade servers may
be used to meet these requirements. LSI 600 series
JBODs offer the capacity and a high degree of
optimisation needed to support the data growth
in HPC applications.
Data Centres
Effective space utilisation, lowered total cost of
ownership, reduction in power requirements, and
green initiatives are some of the needs in efficient
data centre design. Maximise your hardware
investments in a smaller footprint while driving
more capacity to host systems with LSI 600 series
JBOD configurations. Advanced enclosure services
greatly improve issue identification in large data
centre environments offering ease of use.
Video Capture
Adhering to data compliance regulations, security
issues, or other requirements might be driving your
need to store more data for longer periods of time.
LSI 600 series JBODs solve data retention challenges
by offering more capacity as needed to support the
expanding storage needs in the video environment.
With LSI MegaRAID DE series controllers, you can
also include support for hardware based encryption
with SED drives for increased data protection.
that allow fault tolerance for failed power supply
modules and hot swappable replacement.
The Environmental Service Module (ESM)
design contains an LSI SAS2x36 expander chip,
enclosure management functions, and comes
in a removable SBB 2.0 compliant canister for
easier replacement. Adding a second ESM
enables failover configurations by having dual
port drives shared by two host systems, in turn
increasing availability to the data stored.
True plug and play solution for more
storage
LSI 600 series JBODs can solve storage
challenges for a variety of applications that
rely on a direct attached storage environment
and include controllers with an external
interface. A true plug and play solution,
JBODs from LSI are compatible with external LSI
MegaRAID®, 3ware® and HBA storage adapters
along with others in the market segment.
Simply connect JBODs from LSI to the external
interface and realise the benefits of more
storage. To scale further, cascade additional
JBODs to your host based server to continue to
A Menu of High Performance JBOD Configurations
increase storage capacity, all without powering
down your system. The type and amount of
drives you use are based on the host interface in
the server that the JBOD is connected to. Using
the LSI RAID controller cards, this can be up to
240 devices and with the LSI HBAs, up to 1024
devices can be supported through a single
host system.
Performance increases for your applications
and more
Virtually any application that uses a direct
attached storage system can obtain performance
enhancements when you expand data storage
solutions to include LSI 600 series JBODs and
LSI storage adapters. Not only can you maximise
performance, you can also improve data
protection using JBODs in combination
with LSI MegaRAID controllers that include
SafeStore Encryption services, which enable
hardware level encryption when using Self
Encrypting Drives (SEDs). Also, LSI HBAs let
you expand out for maximum drive support
and throughput in large-scale deployments.
LSI 600 series JBODs are compatible with most SATA and SAS hard disk drives, SSDs, and
