During the reign <strong>of</strong> Henry VIII, the Ashley estate came into the possession <strong>of</strong> the Brereton family, through the<br />
marriage <strong>of</strong> Thomasine Ashley, daughter and heiress <strong>of</strong> George Ashley, to Richard Brereton the younger son <strong>of</strong><br />
Sir William Brereton VII.<br />
<strong>The</strong> eldest son <strong>of</strong> Richard Brereton and Thomasine Ashley was William Brereton. William was Sheriff <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>Cheshire</strong> in 1609; his eldest son Richard Brereton, who died unmarried in 1649, was Sheriff in 1632 and Mayor <strong>of</strong><br />
the Borough <strong>of</strong> Altrincham from 1632-1634 and 1650-1652.<br />
<strong>The</strong>ir second son Thomas Brereton was probably a magistrate.<br />
Monument to William Brereton and Jane Warburton-Brereton<br />
William Brereton and his wife, the former Jane Warburton, are commemorated in a monument in St. Mary the<br />
Virgin Church, Bowdon, <strong>Cheshire</strong>.<br />
On the north transept <strong>of</strong> the east wall <strong>of</strong> St. Mary the Virgin Church, Bowdon 35 is a brown and cream mottled<br />
alabaster memorial with an entablature supported by columns which stand on a tomb chest. It is a monument to<br />
William Brereton <strong>of</strong> Ashley. Two black columns with plain shafts and gilded Corinthian capitals support the<br />
corniced entablature. On the underside <strong>of</strong> the flat s<strong>of</strong>fit <strong>of</strong> the half tester there are eight plaster putto: the front<br />
four face to the right and the four behind face to the left. Two Tudor roses in relief and painted red are placed<br />
