In 1513 Sir Stanley married Margaret Honford 77 the 12-year-old daughter <strong>of</strong> William Honford or Handforth,<br />
who had fought and was killed at Flodden.<br />
It appears that Sir Stanley became embittered against earthly matters following a serious property dispute with<br />
Cardinal Wolsey. Neighbouring landowners were not always on friendly terms, especially when property was<br />
in question. Leghe <strong>of</strong> Adlington and Sir John Stanley quarreled over the Presbury tithes. Cardinal Wolsey sided<br />
with Leghe and Sir John lost his case and for a time his liberty. In 1528, Stanley obtained a divorce and decided<br />
