It was in light of this that MAN
B&W Diesel originally created the
CoCoS software suite for Computer
Controlled Surveillance of diesel
engines. Since then, much effort
has been put into improving and
expanding the use of the software,
especially with regard to the management
of diesel engine maintenance.
It was always the intention
to make it an open system that can
handle all technical equipment,
not just diesel engines.
Features Features and and Benefits
Benefits
MAN B&W Diesel are now pleased
to announce the next generation
of the CoCoS software. This will be
released with the new name,
CoCoS Maintenance.
CoCoS Maintenance has been designed
to fully integrate three of
the modules of the previous Co-
CoS system. The new software encompasses
the following applications:
• Maintenance Planning
System
• Spare Part Catalogue
• Stock Handling
• Purchasing
General Description
The power centre of CoCoS Maintenance
is the ‘Gantt’ view (Fig. 1),
which is used for planning maintenance
work. It is capable of handling
both ad hoc inspection and
overhaul work, together with regular
preventive maintenance
work.
Regular or time-based maintenance
jobs are calculated using
special algorithms. They are displayed
on individual time-lines
that are grouped to form a ‘Gantt’
chart. This, easy to understand,
chart provides ample forewarning
about the different types of work,
including start dates and current
status at all times.
You can zoom in or out of the
• An entirely new, easy to use system for single and
multiple users
• It provides a web-like environment with scrollable
application areas that facilitate on-site, mouse-click
activation of utilities
• Comprehensive graphics interface for easy interpretation
of engine and maintenance data.
• Easy scheduling, follow-up and reporting on maintenance
work
• Application areas focus on key parameters such as
number of proposed, scheduled and released jobs, spare
parts and purchase orders. They are an important help
in decision-making
• Extensive database included with data for your particular
MAN B&W Diesel engine plant. It offers expert assistance
whenever required, including Maintenance Instructions
and Spare Parts Catalogues
• Supplements CoCoS-EDS, MAN B&W Diesel’s Engine
Diagnostics System for ensuring optimum performance
from your engine plant, year after year
• In the near future, both off-line and on-line web support
from MAN B&W Diesel concerning maintenance instructions,
service letters, spare part catalogues, spare part ordering,
program software, engine hardware and technical
support.
‘Gantt’ time-line simply by dragging
the scroll bar at the top of the
chart. The jobs are colour coded to
indicate their current state, which
progresses through ‘Requested’,
‘Scheduled’, ‘Released’ and ‘Closed’
phases from the start to completion
of a job (see Fig. 2).
In addition, the ‘Gantt’ chart indicates
the availability of the spare
parts required to complete the respective
jobs, allowing you to see
at a glance whether further spare
parts need to be ordered.
As indicated, in the centre picture,
you can carry out scheduling simply
by clicking on the particular job
on the ‘Gantt’ time-line. When the
operator clicks on a job, a calendar
opens, indicating an appropriate
due date. A start date is set when
all necessary parameters have
been taken into account and all
necessary resources are likely to be
available. A similar procedure can
be followed for releasing the job
when all resources are at hand or
for rescheduling it, if merited.
Releasing a job automatically
generates a work order that details:
the name of the job, where
it is to be carried out, its start and
end dates, as well as all necessary
resources. These can also be seen
by selecting the appropriate file
cards directly below the ‘Gantt’,
as can details on the necessary
tools and manpower.
To find details about individual
spare parts or instructions on how
to carry out individual maintenance
jobs, simply click on the appropriate
file card and heading for
the entity. Similarly, video instructions
on how to perform the work
can be obtained in the same way.
Spare Part Catalogue
As mentioned above, CoCoS Maintenance
contains extensive data
about the particular engine plant
for which it has been purchased to
administer. This includes catalogues
showing all spare parts that
are available for your engines (See
Fig. 3). Parts are listed hierarchically,
according to assembly and subassemblies
in the engine. These are
depicted in the form of exploded
diagrams that show their precise
location, including the method of
assembly/disassembly.
Stock Handling and
Purchasing
Facilities for requisition and stock
administration are included which
allow easy preparation and followup
on orders, as well as automatic
generation of ordering proposals.
In addition, stock movements are
recorded and a trace log provided
for keeping up-to-date details
about the current location and history
of key components, including
those components that must be
periodically overhauled and/or
refurbished for later use.
Job follow-up and reporting
Besides generation of job orders,
spare part requisitions, etc., CoCoS
Maintenance makes ample provision
for displaying and printing
reports. These can be used to provide
facts and figures about spare
parts, stock requirements and
stock movements, etc. Work in
progress or that has been completed,
including man hour and spare
part consumption, etc., are also
included in this comprehensive
set of reports/prints.
In addition, reports can be generated
at any time throughout the
lifetime of a job, thus enabling you
to follow-up on jobs as soon as
they begin and enables staff to
closely follow the progress of jobs
that occur over long time frames.
Also, these reports are useful for
documenting experience about
individual jobs that will help you
in planning and carrying out future
maintenance work.
Finally, reports can be generated
about the operational and maintenance
history of specific components
(or jobs) as needed to comply
with classification societies.
CoCoS Database
An exclusive feature of CoCoS
Maintenance, which is unique
compared to similar application
software, is that it is supplied with
extensive data about your particular
diesel engine plant.
9
The benefits of this application are
realised from the very first moment
of using this program – expert
help and advice being available
right from the start.
For example, it displays work
schedules, spare part catalogues,
ordering information, maintenance
instructions, videos, etc.
that keep you informed of exactly
when, where and how to carry out
inspections and overhauls on your
engine plant.
The huge time taken and expense
incurred in collecting and inputting
such data is, therefore, saved
by taking MAN B&W Diesel’s own
dedicated, engine plant specific,
data.
Use with CoCoS-EDS
CoCoS Maintenance can be used
alone or with CoCoS-EDS. The
CoCoS-EDS program is designed
specifically for diesel engine surveillance,
performance evaluation
and fault diagnosis on single and
multiple engine plants.
Together, CoCoS-EDS and CoCoS
Maintenance serve as an ideal
partner and diesel engine
monitoring system that offers
you expert assistance in keeping
your engine plant in peak operating
condition at all times. ■
