Pobalscoil
Inbhear Scéine
Principal’s
Address
This year has been a very
busy year in the life of
Pobalscoil Inbhear Scéine. Once again we had
outstanding results in Leaving Certificate and Junior
Certificate examinations at the start of the year. In
September four of our students went to Lourdes along
with Ms. Judy O’Connor for the Diocesan Pilgrimage. I
am very proud that our school continues to participate
in this wonderful activity and many students that have
represented the school in the past continue to return to
Lourdes on their own for years after.
Thomas Hayes continued his amazing success in the
field of Science when he won the first prize and trophy
for Physics in the National Physics Olympiad and will
represent Ireland for the 3rd time in the World Physics
Olympiad in Bangkok in July. This is a remarkable
achievement from a remarkable student.
Another highlight of the school year was a visit from
Dr. Maureen Griffin, a Forensic Psychologist, who gave
a very informative workshop on cyber bullying, texting
and the dangers of Facebook. Dr. Griffin also addressed
the parents on this topic and the feedback from parents
and students was outstanding.
On the sporting front the school continues to achieve
at the highest level. The past success of our basketball
teams meant we were promoted to‘A’grade in all boys
basketball. The task of competing against well
established basketball schools did not phase us and we
took some notable scalps. The First Year teams were
our most successful and they both qualified for the All
Ireland play-offs. Both of these play-offs have still to
be completed at the time of writing this article.
In football our Junior Girls team qualified for the
Munster final, where they were unlucky to go down to
St. Augustine’s from Dungarvan in a football final
classic. Our Senior Boys team played Kerry Colleges ‘A’
for the first time in our history and with a little bit of
luck could have qualified for the semi final. In the
Munster competition we lost out to Rochestown
College, but our Senior team is now a force to be
reckoned with. Our Junior team Under 16-1/2 won the
Corn Na Carraige (Munster Colleges) for the second year
in a row. This team will make up the backbone of our
Senior team for the next two years. Our Under 15-1/2
team was beaten in the Kerry Colleges semi-final by
the eventual winners.
It has been a remarkable year in Athletics with our First
Year Girls team qualifying for the All Ireland and the
achievement of Rachel Hawker in finishing 4th in the
Senior Girls Cross Country must be singled out. This is
an amazing result when you realise that she is
competing with the best Ireland can offer. Rachel is a
star athlete of the future.
The school also had a hugely successful musical,
“Hairspray. This musical took place in the first cold snap
in early December, but those who got to see it were
treated to a first class West End standard performance.
The success of our musical was shown when we
finished 2nd in the All Ireland Light Entertainment
finals. The cost of running musicals is high but the
educational value for our students is immeasurable.
Our sporting and musical achievements could not have
happened without the voluntary good will of our
teachers and coaches. Their giving of free time after
school, during holidays, weekends, as well as
organising buses, accommodation, referees, etc.,
should be recognised by all.
In an era of economic hardship it is great to report that
the school has invested heavily in a number of areas. In
ICT we have invested nearly €50,000 in updating
Computers and purchasing further Interactive
Whiteboards and Digital Visualisers. These resources
should help modernise our learning and teaching of
our students. The school has also invested in our
school’s Sports Field which continues to improve. This
year we played boys and girls football matches as well
as boys rugby matches and most of our training was
conducted in our much improved pitch facility.
We purchased a full size stage which can be erected
very quickly and can be used inside as well as outside.
I am sure this stage will see many great musicals, music
recitals, dance, etc., in the coming years. As I write we
are nearing completion of the courtyard project which
will be the centre stage of our ten year celebrations.
I hope you enjoy reading this newsletter. There is so
much happening in this school on a daily basis that this
newsletter can only give a snapshot of some of the
highlights. I want to wish all our students who will be
sitting State examinations the very best of luck and
may your hard work be rewarded.
I would like to thank the staff for their continuing
commitment to Pobalscoil Inbhear Scéine. I would like
to wish our colleague Jerry Riney all the best for his
retirement. May you retire knowing that you have
made a remarkable contribution to the lives of your
students. Your commitment to excellence has left a
lasting mark on each of us. I hope this newsletter will
in some small way show the community of Pobalscoil
Inbhear Scéine the hard work that goes into making
this school such a vibrant place. I have to thank the
parents for their ongoing co-operation and help in
many areas of school life.
At the end of another fulfilling and exciting year I wish
everyone a happy and safe summer. Enjoy loads of fine
weather and see you for our 10th Birthday Celebration
in September.
Dermot Healy, Principal
THANK YOU I would like to thank all students, teachers and parents who contributed to our 2011 Guth Scéine.
Thank you especially to Norma Moriarty and Lisa O’Shea for their proof reading and corrections. Mairead Clifford
STUDENT PRESIDENT
The year is coming to an end in Pobalscoil Inbhear Scéine, and it’s hard to believe
how little time we have left. We have had a very busy year in every aspect of
school life. First of all, I would like to say what an honour it has been to be the
student president this year. The student council worked hard and I must thank
my vice-president, Aoife Godfrey. We began the year with high hopes and we are
still coming up with new ideas at every meeting. We achieved a lot in regards to the canteen this year
and I’d like to thank Mr Gerry O’ Shea for meeting with our committee during the year. Another event
which we felt was very special was the no-uniform day for the Megan Malone Trust. The school raised
€810.55 for Megan. Thank you to all who contributed. The student council’s work is on-going and I
would like to thank Ms Piggott and all the class reps for co-operating and being so helpful. The under
16’s boys football team recently won the Munster Final and on behalf of the school, I would like to say
how proud all of us were of their fine display of football in Rathmore. Congratulations to Kevin O’Sullivan
and Kieran Fitzgibbon (Captain) who made the Kerry Minor Hurling Team and to Tadhg Morley and
John Spillane who are on the Kerry Minor Football Team. A big shout out to the ‘Hairspray’ crew who
A FEW THOUGHTS
Sr. Helen
I direct these few thoughts to the Leaving
Cert class of 2011. We are all aware that you
will shortly leave Pobalscoil Inbhear Scéine. It
seems such a short time since you arrived and
I know that there are always mixed feelings
as we move on to another phase of life… full
of possibilities and unknowns.
For some reason today I find myself
remembering a student I knew in Bolton
Street in the late 90’s. His name was Vincent
Kee. He was from Malaysia. Vincent came to
Ireland and worked in a Chinese take-away
but he had a dream of becoming a Transport
Engineer. He was not among the students
who were selected for the course and he
called to the College to inquire. He put
forward his case to the Head of Department
politely and eagerly. The Head of Department
at the time said that if someone dropped out
and a vacancy occurred he would be
considered.
Every day for three weeks Vincent called to
check on the situation. His visits became
predictable and he got the same answer
every day. But at the end of the three weeks
there was a break-through. Whether the
Head of Department was worn down (like
the unjust judge in the Gospel story) or
whether a vacancy really did occur, Vincent
got a place.
He kept his job in the take-away, needing the
Parents Association
Newsletter 2011
The School year is almost over and it
seems only like a few weeks ago since
I wrote last years’ article for the School
Magazine. We began our year with a
new and energetic committee, and this
year’s committee comprised of parents
like myself who have been involved in
the PA for a number of years, and a
large number of 1st year parents who
not only joined the committee but
came to every meeting throughout the
year.
This year we elected two members to
represent the parents on the Board of
Management, Anne Randles who has
worked on our behalf for a number of
years, and new to the board Maureen
Gudgeon, we wish them well during
their time on the BOM and are
confident that they will represent us
well.
As this will be my last year in the PA,
Anne Duncan is now our only
money. He cycled
into College every
day and brought his
own sandwich. He
studied hard. He
even sent money
home to his Mother
who was unwell. He
came every Monday to our‘Friendship Lunch’.
Three years into his course, he went home
one summer and returned with a little gift
for those he had become friendly with.
Why am I recalling this story? Vincent is one
of my heroes. He was of the Buddhist
tradition and he was open to people of all or
no tradition. He held on to his dream and
worked selflessly to achieve it. He
appreciated kindness and acknowledged it.
He never forgot his roots and his family. I was
in Kenmare when the time came for him to
return to Malaysia but he tracked me down
and one day the phone rang and it was
Vincent phoning to say‘ Goodbye and thanks’.
As you, the Leaving Certs of 2011 set out on
your journey of life, you need resilience, hope
and hard work. If the first option doesn’t
work out, remember: there is always another
option. Appreciate any kindness shown to
you and express it. Don’t be afraid. That
message permeates the Gospels: don’t be
afraid. It is a challenging world and a
wonderful world. It was great to have known
you. Be happy! We are rooting for you.
representative in PACCS, (The Parents
Association of Community &
Comprehensive Schools) which we are
affiliated to, Anne attends monthly
meetings in Dublin and Munster. A
great deal of time is given to attending
these meetings on Saturdays and week
nights and we "thank" Anne for giving
her time.
On a final note could I remind parents
that the PA primary function is to
represent the views of the parents
within the School Community and we
continue to maintain a positive line of
communication with the School
Management and Students. All parents
with children attending Pobalscoil
Inbhear Scéine are automatically
members of the Parents Association
and are welcome to attend our
meetings which are held on the first
Wednesday of each month during term
time. So please do come along.
Best wishes to all Students in their
coming exams.
Antoinette Moynihan Chairperson
did so well in Macroom this year winning best choreography and best comedy, Nice one Ms Whitehead,
Ms Comerford and Declan O’Neill! Congratulations to Thomas Hayes on winning the Science Olympiad
and to Conor Finnegan, Theresa Healy and Thomas again for winning 1st place in an ISTA Science
competition this year!! It’s always an honour to be in a school amongst such talented people! ☺ After
a busy few weeks with the Mocks French and Irish orals and all the other practicals, we ended with Arts
Week. It was a huge success, as usual, this year! We had live music every day, movies, an afternoon with
the renowned Sean Godfrey and 2 concerts, one for music students in the school, the other for past
students. The teachers really don’t know how lucky they are to have students like us! Finally, as the year
draws to a close, I would like to wish each and every student the best of luck next year and a special
shout out to the Leaving Cert Class! This year has been so much fun and being able to share a school
year with a bunch like ye was the best part of it! I hope Pobalscoil doesn’t miss us too much! I know
Mr Rogers will … NOT! So best of luck in the future to all 6th years. Thank you to all teachers especially
Mr Healy and Ms Foley who have helped students in the school throughout the year and a big cheer
for Ms Clifford who put this fabulous newsletter together! It has been an honour and a joy to be your
president and I hope the students of Pobalscoil always remain as crazy and unique as they are now.
BEING IN FIRST YEAR On the first day I was feeling really nervous when we went into the school. The Year Head Mrs O’Connor was really nice and welcoming. We were sorted into our classes
and introduced to our class tutors and our own mentors. They talked us through our timetables and showed us around the school. The first day helped me settle in a lot faster. All the first year sports teams
have done really well. A lot of the first year girls were on the junior girls’ team that reached the Munster football finals. Both the boys and girls 1st year basketball teams have reached the all-Ireland play
offs. The boys’ football team won the B final in Kerry. The first year girls cross country team also reached the all-Ireland finals. The mentors were very friendly. They showed us around the school and they
taught us how to use our lockers and they helped us settle in a lot faster. Thank you! I am really enjoying my time in secondary school because I’ve made lots of new friends and I’m having lots of fun and
“learning” a lot. 1st year student 2010/2011
JUNIOR CERTIFICATE 2
JC3 Well here we are. It is hard to imagine that we are almost done with JC3 and are going into Senior Cycle. The last three years have flown by and it is hard to imagine we will be starting another chapter
in our lives in Pobalscoil Inbhear Scéine. With a record number of people applying for Transition Year and LCA, it is quite clear that next year will be a completely different experience for all of us. Obviously
at the moment, we are worrying about our Junior Certificate examinations in June, and are studying very hard. It is a stressful time for both the students and their families, but soon it will all be over and
we can enjoy our summer holidays. The staff and teachers have been great helping us to prepare for our exams and we very much appreciate all the help they have given us.
As we are an exam year, we don’t get to go on as many outings as other class groups but have still gone on a couple of outings this year. We went to the Carnegie Arts Centre twice, once to see the play
“The Mercant Of Venice”being acted out on stage and we also went during Arts Week to see the movie“The Mercant Of Venice”. This was a great experience for all students and will help us with our drama
question in our English examination. We also availed of the opportunity to see the boys’football team play in the Munster final against Mallow in Rathmore. It was a very enjoyable day and when Kenmare
won, it was a huge bonus. So that sums up another year for our JC3 students. Katie Twomey
ENGLISH NEWS
This year, our Fifth Years got off to a cracking good start
at essay writing with Writer in Residence for Kerry County
Council, Ms. Ann Barrett. Ms. Barrett, a well- known, local
writer, came to inspire our pupils with Creative Writing
Workshops.
Amidst writing marvellous creative essays, we also
managed several trips to the theatre. Dancing at
Lughnasa and The Hamlet-Merchant of Venice Sessions,
both of which were performed at The Carnegie Arts
Centre in Kenmare, were enjoyed by the exam classes at
Junior Certificate and Leaving Certificate level.
In promotion of the art of film-making and production, a
new film club called, Keep It Reel, has been organised by
Fifth Year pupils. A special thank you is extended to
Sabhdh Moriarty of Fifth Year for organising this new club
and The Carnegie Arts Centre for offering their space to
our pupils for this new venture which is sure to be a
success.
Over the Easter Holidays, we headed over the hills to
Siamsa Tire in Tralee to see some of our students, Joshua
Muller-Tolk, Daniel Quinn, Liam Fox and Kelsea O’Brien
OUR TRIP TO THE BT
YOUNG SCIENTIST
We were delighted to be selected to take part in the BT Young
Scientist Competition in January with a project titled
“Creating New Deep Water Fisheries”
The first day was Wednesday but it was not open to the
general public this was so the participants and staff could
set up the stands and projects. It was a hectic day as projects
that arrived late were running around frantically trying to
get set up. Thankfully we arrived early and were able to
browse around the stands and check out the competition,
some projects were very good. We were nervous but
confident in our project. The next day the exhibition was
open to the general public and we received a letter saying
that the judge would arrive at 2 o’clock. The judge came and
we were asked questions and she was interested in the
project. The next day we were told a double judging was to
happen. Later on in the day we were interviewed by Ryan
Tubridy on the radio and our pictures were printed in the
paper. We were interviewed by marine biologists and were
asked some questions by RTÉ news.
We were relieved on the second last day as there was no more
judging. The school came up to the exhibition to support us.
We had a look around all the stands and went to the Robots
wars. The First Years and the Transition Years had to go back
but Mr O Sullivan stayed for the awards ceremony. It was
amazing; the previous winner said our project was very good.
The last day was great we viewed the wining projects and viewed the events that were taking place.
GÁRDA MERIT AWARD
Each year we are invited to nominate students for this award. The Gárda Merit
award recognises young people who make a contribution to their community. It
encourages and rewards good community spirit among young people. Usually
the Principal invites staff to nominate exceptional students but this year the
Student Council was also invited to nominate. (We are aware that a lot of
community activities happen far away from the school and we may be quite
unaware of the commendable work that a student is doing in their home area.)
Nominations came from both groups and happily some of our nominees were
selected. The presentation of awards is always a proud moment- for the young
person, for parents and for the school. At the official function citations are read
giving an amazing range of community service in so many different ways. There
are speeches and a delicious meal is offered to all. A few years ago we were the
first school to receive a school award for our participation and collaboration over
the previous years.
I received an award for coaching the Under 13 Soccer team and bringing them
to games every second Saturday. I was also involved in afterschool study, helping
students who found their homework difficult as well as being a first year mentor.
Hugh Gudgeon
I was awarded an award of merit for my role as a public representative for the
young people of the greater Kenmare area. This role was as a result of my election
to the Kerry County Youth Council, National Youth Parliament of Ireland (Dáil na
nÓg) as well as qualifying for the European Youth Parliament National selection
conference. During my time as a public representative I brought about a €1.5
million fund for youth cafés across Ireland- a fund which the services in Kerry
have availed of. I was also chosen for the National Youth Council of Ireland’s select
Committee on lowering the voting age to 16. I have been interviewed on radio
Kerry many times for my various roles including being on that select committee
and a member of Dáil na nÓg. My position as chairperson of the green School
committee was also recognised as a reason for being nominated for this Merit
award. Thomas O’Sullivan
I received the Garda youth achievement merit award for being involved with
every aspect of school life, such as football & basketball teams, musicals,
debating and student council. I also participated in various courses such as water
safety, defibrillator training course and a youth participation course which
enabled me to help out with the local youth club. I also spent time doing alterserving
and being a member of the choir in Kilgarvan Church. I also volunteered
to throw a concert twice a year in the Alzheimer’s centre in Kilgarvan with the
youth club. Aoife Godfrey
HISTORY TRIP
DUBLIN, MARCH 15TH
A wealth of History is very accessible in
Dublin. The LC1 class took full advantage of
this on Friday and Saturday 15th, 16th of
March. We enjoyed a busy and varied 2
days which saw us experience history from
the Dáil to ancient Egypt! Our first stop was
the first sitting of the 31st Dáil where we
were privileged to be in the Visitor’s Gallery
for the Taoiseach’s Questions – the first
time Enda Kenny (Fine Gael) was
answering questions as the newly elected
Taoiseach with the opposition leaders -
Michael Martin, Joe Higgins and Gerry
Adams all asked the questions. As a class
we have a keen interest in Current Affairs
and Politics so the uniqueness of this sitting
of the Dáil was not lost on us. The tour of
the building in Kildare Street which
followed, was interesting and informative.
Shopping was next on the agenda, so Grafton Street shops saw the colour of our money. Meeting our
guide, Donal at Trinity at 5 o’clock (some people were unavoidably late!) we set off on a walking tour
of Dublin. We walked and talked to Dublin castle, Burdocks Fish and Chip Shop and O’Connell Street. A
visit to the theatre to see “Carnage” finished off the evening and we made our way via Dublin Bus and
a helpful bus driver, back to the hotel for a well-earned rest. The next morning, well rested, we set off
for Scoil Eanna in Rathfarnham, the school where Padraig Pearse lived and taught. This is a very well
renovated building and gave us a fascinating insight into the life and times of the organisers of the
1916 Rising. Ancient Egypt beckoned next and a much heralded exhibition of the Tomb of Tutankamun.
This was a little disappointing as the sarcophagi and contents are all replicas but never the less
interesting to see. Next on our schedule was a trip to Croke Park but we could not let the occasion pass
without visiting Glasnevin Cemetery. We would highly recommend this as the graves of many famous
Irishmen and women are here to see. We touched Daniel O’Connell’s coffin, saw where most of the
prominent national figures of the 20th century are buried and marveled at the fact that over 250,000
people are buried there, including 13,000 in a Cholera Plot. The tour of Croke Park was brief, but we did
see where the goal line technology was being installed, very close to the spot where Micheal Hogan
was shot on Bloody Sunday. Following attempts at hitting a sliothar at measured speed as well as other
game skills, Philip the bus driver then took the long and winding road which brought us home to Kerry.
We now have a greater understanding and appreciation of the history of Ireland from the early 20th
century to the present day and really enjoyed our trip. Mrs. Oonagh Comerford
LEAVING CERTIFICATE
VOCATIONAL PROGRAMME
All LCVP students have been busy throughout 2010-
2011. This year all Leaving Cert Year1 students have
had the opportunity to study LCVP, with the decision on
whether or not to continue with it as an exam subject
for Leaving Cert being taken after Easter. Having been
introduced to the programme they immediately set
about working on their portfolio items.
The LCVP portfolio contains six items: Curriculum
Vitae, Enterprise Plan, Career Investigation, Summary
Report, Work Experience Diary and Recorded
Interview. All students have been busy working on
many of these items throughout this year. Class Pádraig
began the year by hosting a very informative visit from
Ms. Margaret McCarthy of Bia Bia. Ms. McCarthy told
the class what it is like to be an entrepreneur and what
was involved in setting up her business. Her belief in
the importance of shopping locally was indeed food for
thought for all who listened to her presentation. Class
Flannan welcomed Mr. John Brennan from the Park
Hotel, Kenmare to their classroom and listened to him
about his job, the hotel industry and its future. All
classes also undertook visits out, namely to the Park
Hotel, Kenmare Mart and to Liebherr in Killarney. We
are all most grateful to those who helped in the
organisation and running of these events.
December saw all students engage in work experience.
Having prepared their curriculum vitaes in advance,
these were posted to employers before students began
work experience. However, December 2010 will
probably be best remembered for the dreadful weather
conditions we encountered. For some students this did
interrupt their work experience but thankfully, and with
the co-operation of so many employers, students were
able to complete their work experience on other dates.
Many students also choose to do further investigation
on the career they did work experience on and compiled
a short report on this. This was also part of their LC1
Careers module.
LC2 students have also been busy this year. They began
the year by drawing up plans for their mini-enterprises
and subsequently ran these enterprises. Having
completed the six items for their portfolios of work,
namely the CV, Summary Report, Career Investigation,
Enterprise Plan, Work Experience Diary and Recorded
Interview (worth 60% of the total LCVP marks)
students then settled down to preparing for their written
exam. The written exam, which is worth 40% of total
marks, is held on the first Wednesday in May each year.
ONE PER CENT FOR ARTS
SCHEME AT POBALSCOIL
INBHEAR SCÉINE
On construction of the new school, the
Government pledged to give one per cent of the
budget to the school for an Arts project, for which
we are very grateful. The process began two years
ago and will be finished before the end of this
school year. The Courtyard, which is at the heart of
the school, was chosen as the location for the
project. With a brief to the artist to design the whole courtyard space, it has been completely
transformed. The central piece which is located on the old Convent wall was designed by well
known Sculptor, Remco de Fouw. It consists of a circular stained glass window surrounded by a
mesh of patinated copper pipes. With its echoes of light and vision, chaos and order, as well as
the obvious form of a nest (Néidin), it is open to many interpretations! The other main part of
SPRING CLEAN DAY 8TH APRIL 2011
GREEN SCHOOL 2011
This day has become an annual tradition for first years and their TY supervisors. The Lodge Wood and the Pier were
the targets of our determined Litter Pickers this year. Kerry County Council provided Bags and Gloves and in
blazing early Spring sunshine we gathered up bags of rubbish from both locations. KCC took away what we had
gathered and unfortunately we know that we will have to do the very same next year – when will people learn
to dispose of their rubbish in the correct place and not try to hide it what could be lovely place for the people of
Kenmare? As a Green School we discourage such irresponsible behaviour and continue the work of the Green
National Schools in the area with the young people in our school. We are tackling the topic of Bio Diversity for our
5th Green Flag and will be organizing awareness raising events and activities throughout the remainder of 2011
and into 2012. Oonagh Comerford
ARTS WEEK 2011
Arts week 2011 took place in Pobalscoil Inbhear Scéine April 11th to 15th, 2011. Arts week provides an
opportunity to showcase the creative talents of our students both past and present and the variety of arts
activities includes painting, photography, film, writing, poetry, dance and music. The 2011 Arts week featured
an exhibition of paintings entitled ‘’confetti’’ by visiting artist Christiano Bomfim.
We were also delighted to present a song/ music workshop with legendary singer Sean Garvey... And keeping
it in the family, Sean’s son, Oscar nominated animator Eoghan Garvey of Brown Bag films, who presented
and discussed their award winning film Granny O’ Grimms Sleeping Beauty. This year’s visiting poet was
Seamus Hogan who hosted the poetry reading/workshop with harpist Claire Roche.
Arts Week 2011 proved to be an energizing, invigorating, entertaining and challenging experience.
MUSIC
The music students of Pobalscoil Inbhear Scéine have had a busy year with many opportunities to perform and to explore
various elements of making music. Our students have enhanced and added to many performances and events both in and
out of school. Aisling Urwin played a moving musical tribute on her harp for the Hollywood actress, Maureen O’Hara, in
the Carnegie Arts Centre on February 25.Aisling was amongst a group of 8 students who became involved in Teen Spirit 3,
which is based in Killarney and culminated in 2 performances on April 1 in the INEC and 1 concert in the Cork Opera House.
We are very proud of all those who took part and represented our school so well.
Music practicals have been a big part of the music curriculum this year. A great delight is that the final practicals of the school
year in May will be examined by past pupil Kieran Finnegan, who is studying music in Cork School of Music. Kieran has been
involved in guiding the music practical programme throughout the year. We are very fortunate to have such a large pool
of exceptional instrumental teachers in the locality.
On September 17 we were treated to a wonderful composition workshop led by talented past pupil, Athoulis Tsiopani. He
opened the students` eyes to some of the approaches and methods involved in composing music. On October 5 and 6,
Derek Doyle gave a percussion workshop, which was invaluable for all budding drummers. Throughout term 1 and 2, Sam
Comerford, another past pupil, continued percussion work with JC1 and 2.
Arts week, at the end of the Spring term, was another busy week for the musicians in school. Emilia Rudzinska organised
a very exciting programme of lunchtime concerts made up of groups and soloists. Peggy Healy`s musicians entertained
the JC1 classes. Sean Garvey gave a wonderful lecture on the history of Irish music, throughout which he sang and played
beautifully. Many music students, including Peggy`s group, performed in the student concert on Wednesday evening,
which showcased all the year groups. It was a thrilling and varied concert. The winners of the composition competition were
Aisling Urwin in the instrumental section and Tara Viscardi in the song section. Alex Ryan has been the inspiration for the
composition competition and we are very proud of his achievements in the music world. Arts week was closed by Peggy
and James Kelleher entertaining JC1 and TY to a an action-packed and fun filled ceili.
It has been an incredible year, full of amazing events and great discoveries, both large and small. The music in Pobalscoil
Inbhear Scéine is driven by its amazing students and supported by its fantastic staff. It also could not happen without the
unstinting support of you, the parents and families. We are all so fortunate to be involved with each and every one of
these amazing young people. Long may they continue to make and enjoy music. Veronica Whitehead

AWARDS NIGHT
There was a great sense of expectancy and excitement at Pobalscoil Inbhear Scéine in Kenmare on Thursday, 21st October, before the annual Awards Ceremony. Several students received
recognition for their achievements in a wide range of activities including academic achievement, art, music, green school, engineering, public speaking, debating, penmanship, athletics,
football, basketball, and rugby.
In a thoughtful and inspiring address Principal, Mr. Dermot Healy thanked every student for their contribution during the year. He said that he was very proud of them and that he was delighted
that they were using their talents to full potential. Tom Spillane was chosen as the 2010 student of the year. He was described as an extremely focussed and determined student who had a very
positive effect on the school. He impressed everyone that worked with him with his graciousness and his good nature. He was described as a Model Student.
Pobalscoil Inbhear Scéine had a very successful year last year in the Sporting field. In basketball, the U16 boys won the All Ireland Cup “B” Final. They also got into the All Ireland semi-final in
the league. This was a wonderful achievement. The 1st and 2nd year boys qualified out of their region and took part in the All Ireland play-offs. Senior Football won The Freddie Moynihan Cup
in Kerry Colleges. They won the Munster Colleges Title, Corn an Rúnaí. They won the the All Irish Corn Mhichill Mhic Dhónall. They went through the year unbeaten under 16 ½ Team won the
Joe O’ Connor cup in Kerry colleges and Corn NA Carraige in Munster. I have no doubt that they would have won the All Ireland if there was a competition at this level. 1st years won the Kerry
Colleges title, and this makes a good foundation for the future of football in Pobalscoil Inbhear Scéine. We all hope that the annual awards night will become bigger and better each year.
This year’s musical recalled the days of racial tension in 1960s America as epitomised by
the segregation of TV programmes for teenagers. A super-talented group of students
took on “Hairspray” - they worked very hard, even giving up their mid-term break in
October to take part in “Dance Boot Camp” with Miranda da Barra. Singing and Drama
rehearsals were held separately until the end of November. It all came together then
and we even had“Pyjama rehearsals”which were great fun. We had the added advantage
of using a live band who were led by Tom Deam and Jim Kiely - both fabulous musicians
who gave very generously of their time and expertise. The Matinee performance and 3
evening performances played to reduced audiences because of the harsh winter weather
but they were very energetic, enjoyable, professional shows. A 15 minute version of
the musical was entered for the All Ireland Light Entertainment Competition held
by the Briery Gap in Macroom and following heats, we eventually came second in
the Final of that Competition. A big thank you to all staff and students who took part
and planning and preparation for next year’s show are already underway!!
VISIT TO THE BANK
On the 4th of November 2010 we all went to the local
branch of Bank of Ireland. We arrived at 10:15 and
met a senior member of staff. She gave us a talk
about various aspects of the bank. We were told
about the different accounts that are available. We
were told about the different types of money
available for example currencies different countries
and how it is made as there is only a certain way that
money can be made. We were also told how fake
money is made and how you would be able to tell
the difference between them. We all found this
interesting. We will be going there again before the
summer holidays. Linda Kelleher & Grace Randles
DRUMMING WORKSHOP
On Tuesday the 5th of October Transition Years took part in a
drumming workshop brought to us by Derek Doyle. He was a very
good teacher and we all enjoyed the workshop. The work shop took
up most of the day and we all learnt a lot of drumming styles. He
taught us how to do a drum roll and we had great fun trying to get
it right .We all had a laugh that day and would love to do it again.
RELIGION
In religion class we took part in Ceiliúradh Na nÓg which celebrates young people's participation
in developing and enhancing school parish links. We had to work on links between our school
and parish group under this year's theme I say 'Yes', my Lord. For this project we decided to visit
St. Joseph’s Nursing home, where we sang songs for the patients, played a parachute game and
interacted with them. While we were in the Nursing home we took pictures and videoed ourselves
entertaining the patients. On the 10th March 2011 we attended the Brandon Hotel where we
TRANSITION YEAR
LONDON
In March the Transition Years took their school trip to London. We left from Cork airport and landed in Stansted in the afternoon. After
everyone was settled we took a coach were given a tour of London. We stayed in a Scout’s hotel on the outskirts of the city centre called
‘Meininger’. These hotels are located in major cities of the world such as Paris and Berlin. The hotel had a ‘Bear Grylls’ theme. Seeing
the giant poster of the celebrity on the front of the hotel, we immediately approved. During our time in London we went to the Natural
History Museum, the Science Museum, the London Eye, London Dungeons, Museum of Modern Art and the Tower of London. The trip
was definitely worth it, on educational levels and personally. Maeve Korpela
MATHS
As part of our curriculum in Maths for
Transition Year, we have done several
projects. During our first few months of
Transition Year, we did research on famous
mathematicians. These include the
Pythagoreans, William Rowan Hamilton,
Charles Baggage and of course Albert
Einstein. This will be part of our portfolio
at the end of the year. We also did research on the Holy Cross Church, measuring the
dimensions and calculating angles. This was an innovative way to involve the class as part
of our geometry course. Our classes for Maths tend to be different from the typical, with
more innovative ways to follow the curriculum. These include brain training, activities
involving Countdown and more ‘head-on’ methods. Maeve Korpela
got a chance to share our experience and the work we had done in our parish with other schools
and participate in workshops. There Daniel Smith was interviewed about the Nursing Home by
Weeshie Fogarty. We were then given free lunch and went to different workshops. We each
received a certificate of achievement from Bishop Murphy. We had a great day and enjoyed the
new experience we had in the Nursing home. At present we are organizing a road race between
T.Y. students and teachers to raise money for charity. We will be starting training soon. There will
also be leaflets given out to students so they can bet on who will win the race. Grace Randles
THE YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS
Though most of us were in a time of recession, the Transition Years were on their way to success when they
participated in the Young Entrepreneur Programme. They all submitted an idea to the competition, and some of
the ideas included a tippex-eraser, heated toilet seats, a tour-guide-for-hire business, instant chicken farm and a
range of new tea flavours. The TYs visited the Brandon Hotel in Tralee, where famous and successful entrepreneurs
gave some inspirational speeches. As well as submitting a business plan, we had to take an exam. From the 600
students in the competition, 50 got through to the next round, including our very own John Hayes and Daniel
Smith. Once in the top 50, they had to give a Dragon’s Den styled pitch to five judges. Unfortunately neither John
nor Daniel got through to the finals, but they came further than most students, and have served our school well.
PINK NAILS DAY!
On the 8th of October, the 2010 Transition Year class painted
willing students nails pink to raise money for breast cancer. Each
student paid €2 to get both hands painted. To get ready for the
day all of the girls in Transition Year went to the Secret Garden to
learn how to paint nails fast and precisely. Along with painting
nails we went around the town raising money from the public.
Between our School and two other Schools we raised €2,000 for
breast cancer. Faith Dorrill
YOGA
In September 2010 we had two sessions of
yoga. We learned how to stretch different
muscles. We learned that yoga is a great way to
keep fit. Many people think that yoga is just
stretching. But we learned that yoga is more
about creating balance in the body through
developing both strength and flexibility. We
did this through the performance of poses.
Also during the yoga classes we were
instructed on our breathing and how to relax.
We had great fun doing the yoga and we
enjoyed it very much. Faith Dorrill
THE ROSES
As part of our Valentine’s Day project we sold roses to the students and teachers of the school, and gave them out anonymously
on Valentine’s Day. One of the TY pupils came up with the basic idea and we developed it into a project together from there.
Lots of research went into resourcing the roses, for the most cost effective way. We decided to use four different colours of rose.
Pink, Yellow, Red and White. Each colour represented a different meaning. Pink was for Secret Crush, Yellow was for Friendship,
Red was for Passion and White was for Love. We ordered the roses from SuperValu. We then hand wrapped them and distributed
them to the school. It was a great success. We would like to thank all who helped in this project especially the staff of SuperValu
and of Kenmare Flowers. Anna O'Sullivan

THE MAGNIFICENT
ART-ICLE
Our TYs have splashed paint on the world of creativity and
have made their mark this year. They have created some
interesting and wonderful paintings and lino prints for the
Art’s Week exhibition. They have also participated in various
art workshops, such as a movie workshop and a face
drawing workshop with Christiano Bomfim. In addition to
all this the Transition Years have created a few other
paintings, clay models, preparation sketches and drawings.
The TYs had a lot of fun creating works of art and have had
the artistic experience of a lifetime. Daniel Smith
CAPPANALEA
On the 20th of September 2010, our TY class travelled to Kilorglin to Cappanalea Outdoor Education Centre. We were
greeted with a fabulous Cork flag from the Ballyvourney School group, who were also staying in Cappanalea that
week, as Cork had won the All Ireland the previous day. In Cappanalea we completed various activities such as
canoeing, campcraft, abseiling and hillwalking in preparation for our expedition. Our expedition was very successful,
no one sustained any injuries while we walked 10km, we arrived second of out three groups on the mountaintop,
no one fell down the thirty foot abseil, and no canoes were sunk while crossing the lake. The purpose of our trip
to Cappanalea was to get to know each other a little better, and to learn how to work together as a team, and this
was achieved :) Our expedition was also part of a survival course, and we completed it as part of our Gaisce award.
We received certificates and badges after completing the survival course :) Sarah O’Leary
PANCAKE DAY
The 8th of March this year was Pancake Day and to celebrate this day the T.Y. class made
pancakes for the whole school. The day before Pancake Day we bought the ingredients
we needed and left them in the school. The next morning all the Transition Year students
started to cook pancakes for eleven O’clock break when break came we sold the pancakes
for €1.50 each as well as a toping of your choice (Nutella, Lemon and Sugar). The day was
a great success and everybody enjoyed it. Stanley Harrington
CAREERS
In our work careers class we went on various trips and did a number of projects throughout the
year. October 18th -22nd and February 14th – 17th we all went on work experience to different
places of interest. On Friday 28th of January we had a computer course in IT Tralee, we found this
fun and interesting, also on 3rd of February we went to the IT in Tralee and we got a tour around
MOCK EUROPEAN COUNCIL DEBATE
DUBLIN CATLE, 11TH MARCH
On the 11th of March last Pobalscoil Inbhear Scéines’finest debaters were off to Dublin Castle to
take part in the mock EU council debate. This debate was on the topic of extended maternity
leave in the European Union. The format of this debate involved chosen schools representing a
country in the European Union. The country we represented was Cyprus. The start of the day
involved a quick meet and greet with the Cypriot ambassador. This then allowed the day’s
proceedings to get underway. The debate began slowly with opening statements by all teams
including one from our riveting Brian Clifford. His statement became the foundation for much of
the general debate that followed. As the debate began, team’s switched speakers and I became
our speaker for the rebuttal and the rest of the day. Much of what followed was a micro-cosm of
the real council debates in Brussels – i.e. much toing and froing between larger and smaller
EUROPEAN YOUTH PARLIAMENT SUCCESS
At the end of October last year, I was selected as the school’s delegate for the European Youth
Parliament Regional Session in Cork. At that conference I spoke exceptionally on a topic close to
my heart – Common Agricultural Policy Reform. From this I won a place at the All-Ireland session
of the European Parliament. This session was to choose 12 delegates out of 120 from all across
the country to represent Ireland at the European Youth Parliament. The standard was
undoubtedly going to be much higher this time around. The national Session was held over the
weekend of the 25th – 27th March 2011, in the University of Limerick Campus. I was chosen to
speak on my favourite European topic – Economic and Monetary Affairs in the Eurozone. The
SIM DRIVE
On the 18th February two people came to the
school from Cork in a lorry. In the lorry they
had six driving simulators which were all set
to different levels of experience. The simulator
was made up of three screens, a seat, a
steering wheel, foot pedals and gears. We had
to start off by starting the car and steering it.
Then we learned how to change gears and
keep at the correct speed. We all enjoyed it a
lot. At the end we all got a report saying that
we have completed the SIM drive program.
HUMANITIES
As part of our Humanities class, we have been taking part in several hands on projects. In these projects we
found out about Wladyslaw Szpilman, our own family tree, and a European country. These were very
insightful. I think we were all surprised at how far we got back on our family tree. The project on Wladyslaw
Szpilman, a Holocaust survivor was also very interesting. We watched a biopic movie on his life called “The
Pianist”, and then did a project on him. We also watched a film on another Holocaust survivor retracing his
journey during World War II before he moved to Ireland. Anna O’ Sullivan
the college, then we got a talk about some of the subjects for example: Science, PE, and Technical
Graphics. Now for the last few weeks we have been involved in a career investigation competition
where we would write about our work experiences and the prizes were: 1st prize An Ipad, 2nd
prize An IPod, 3rd prize A digital camera. On the 14th of April we went to UCC for a tour around
the campus and a talk about all the courses. Linda Kelleher
countries but a
resounding and stirring
attack and rebut finally
gave the smaller
countries a voice and
turned the debate on its
head – for the better, of
course! When it came to
the end of the day the
motion passed by one vote, possibly as a result of my eye opening speech at the middle. Much
credit must be given to our researcher and backbone of the team Rory O’Donoghue.
The school’s team was: Brian Clifford (Opening statement), Tom O’Sullivan (Rebuttals’and general
debate) and Rory O’ Donoghue (Information and Advice). Tom O’Sullivan
weekend involved 12 committees working on a European topic such as economics etc. and
bringing their resolution to a general assembly the following day. My committee work was
interesting with temperatures high on many occasions and much of the resolution was hard
fought for by myself in order for us to attain a good comprehensive resolution. This definitely
showed in the General Assembly and during this tough debate I had to draw down on my
debating and diplomacy skills as well as my knowledge of economics – one of my favourite
Leaving Cert subjects. I debated well with many of my rebuttals and attack speeches quietening
committees who eventually realised what they were up against. Unfortunately I didn’t qualify
to the finals in Istanbul from our committee as I finished in a narrowly close second.
LOURDES
On September 2nd 2010 four students and one teacher represented
Pobalscoil Inbhear Scéine as carers in Lourdes with the Kerry
Diocesan Annual Pilgrimage led by Bishop Bill Murphy. The
students that volunteered to work as carers were Aisling
Harrington, Collette O’Sullivan, Ciara Crowley and Sean
Moynihan with the support of their teacher. We worked for five
days, we got up at 5:45am each morning and worked until
11:00pm each night, we cared for the invalids from Kerry and the
disabled in wheelchairs.
We brought them to mass, confession, the baths, the different
churches, Stations of the Cross, Evening candlelit procession and
shopping for religious items. We learned so much from these
people. They had an inner strength; they were always happy and
never complained. It was a wonderful experience. All the invalids that travelled with us had a deep faith which was very moving. It is both a gift and a
privilege to be a carer in Lourdes. Many can ask why these young people wish to travel to Lourdes as carers. One can very easily underestimate the gift
that these carers give to care for someone else is truly a humbling experience. People talk about the church being irrelevant and out-of-touch with the
modern world, yet in Lourdes there are doctors, nurses, teachers, civil servants, priests, engineers, to name a few, who forego a week’s holiday and pay
their own expenses to help people who are less fortunate than themselves. The central message of the Blessed Virgin Mary to St. Bernadette at Lourdes
was to “bring people here in Procession”
Thousands of sick pilgrims pray not only for physical healing and also for spiritual healing, our four students were excellent in their daily duties. They
were respectful and cheerful at all times. I was very proud of them. I strongly recommend Lourdes to everyone and anyone especially if you are in need
for a life changing experience. Judy O’Connor
CSPE
As part of our CSPE action project, my fellow classmates and I held a fundraising quiz for
the 2nd years. Many of the students took part and enjoyed it. In total the quiz raised €150
and all proceeds went to Kenmare Community Hospital for the patients benefit. The prizes
included gift vouchers from local businesses and boxes of sweets which were kindly
donated by Bia Bia, Daybreak and Hallisey's supermarket. On behalf of the organizers, I
would like to thank Ms. Piggott who advised us in the organization and also thank the
LEAVING CERTIFICATE APPLIED
We’re nearly at the end of our career in school. It’s been a hard but enjoyable experience since
we started Pobalscoil Inbhear Scéine and things took a big turn when we started LCA. At the start
of the year we didn’t all know each other but that was then and now we are great friends and
stick up for each other, but we do have our ups and downs. Doing LCA was like one big adventure
because we have done so much like selling Easter eggs and giving the money to Goal and then
having a wedding, it was crazy but we enjoyed every bit of it. We got to go to the Crawford
College of Art and we made a day out of it because we went shopping. The last year of LCA has
felt long but it was worth it because we have done a lot of interviews and we can’t complain
because that is how we are getting our marks. It has been a great two years even though it was
a small group and a few people left but the rest of us survived. LCA has been an eye opener for
us for the future as we’ve had so many interviews which have increased our confidence and
this will help us when we have to go for interviews for college, for work experience and jobs.
We have all stuck together over the two years and we are all going to miss each other but we
are going to miss Ms. Sinead Ni Néill the most because she pulled us through rough times and
changed us in a good way and we are all so grateful to have had her as a Year Head. LCA has been
a great opportunity for us and we hope that the next LCA group will get the same fulfilment that
we have gotten. Martina Palmer and Martin Godfrey
Football Year
2010/2011
This year saw us play Senior ‘A’ College football for the first
time in our school’s history. We could not have asked for a
tougher opening match as our opponents were none other
than the famed ‘Sem’ (St. Brendan’s College, Killarney). After
a rip roaring encounter we were very unlucky to lose by four
points. A disallowed goal in the final ten minutes was the
decisive turning point but we left Kilgarvan with high hopes.
Next up were another Corn Uí Mhuirí team, Intermediate
School, Killorglin. We played outstanding football to win by 0-
20 to 2-8. Our final ‘A’ Colleges match turned out to be a
disappointing loss to Coláiste na Sceilge where we conceded
two early goals against the wind which proved the difference
between the teams in the end. Overall we were very
competitive in the top grade of football in Kerry.
Our Munster campaign was going along nicely until we got
derailed by Rochestown College in controversial
circumstances in December. The efforts put in by Tom
O’Connor and Colm Horgan cannot be praised enough. Their
professional approach has seen us scale heights unimagined
and the school is indebted to their commitment and
U 16 ½ County and Munster Football Champions
dedication. Although the year ended early at senior level, it
was a hugely successful year with tremendous performances
from a team who were very young. All of our team bar two
players would qualify again next year but some will have
progressed to College life and will be replaced by younger
players.
Our Under 16-1/2 team did what they have been doing for
the last three years. They won the Joe O’Connor Cup for Kerry
Colleges for the third year in a row by defeating Rathmore in
January. As defending champions in Munster they set about
defending their title by defeating Tramore in the first round
and then came three games in a row where they left large
leads dwindle before rallying to victory to lead us to the final
in Rathmore on the 6th April. A fantastic match against
Patrician Academy, Mallow, followed where we eventually
came out deserving winners on a scoreline of 4-7 to 2-8. Led
by Captain, Gavin Crowley and the inspirational Cian Hallissey,
the Corn na Carraige was brought back to Pobalscoil Inbhear
Scéine for another year. The Under 16-1/2 team have a
remarkable record in that they have gone 18 matches
undefeated in all competitions.
Our Under 15-1/2 team were beaten by Rosscarbery in the
Munster Colleges and lost the County semi final by one point
to Castleisland’s St. Pats. Our First Year campaign was short
The Under 15 Football team took part
in the Russell Shield Competition. We
brought us to the semi-final in which
we played St. Pats Castleisland but
unfortunately even though we made
a good come- back in the second half
we lost by a single point.
the rugby season commenced last october when both the First and
second Year boys were involved in a rugby blitz in tralee. the First Years
gave an admirable performance on the day in which they won one game
against castleisland community college, drew one game against Killarney
community college and lost their final game to st. pats, castleisland. the
second Years, while performing admirably, were less fortunate in that they
lost to Mounthawk and Killarney community college before drawing with
st. pats castleisland. in the new Year the school was involved in the Junior
section of the West Munster schools competition. the lads gave a thorough
performance in their first game against Killarney community college in
JC2 Rugby Team
that they demolished the Killarney side with a score line of 32-0. pobalscoil
then played intermediate school Killorglin which proved to be a much tougher assignment. this game finished on a score line of 28-10 in favour
of the Killorglin side. the results of these games left the school in the semi-final stage of the West Munster plate, in which they came up against a
very strong abbeyfeale community college side. even though the lads gave a courageous performance, they finished on the wrong side of a 36-
0 score line. it is envisaged that the school will compete in both the senior and Junior sections of the West Munster competition in the next academic
year. John O'Sullivan
BASKETBALL
pobalscoil inbhear scéine had four ladies basketball teams
this year that competed in the Kerry school girls c league.
our senior and cadet girls also competed in the all ireland
in the first round of the cup against a very strong colaiste
final of the competition. our cadet team reached the all
ireland Quarter Final but were beaten by st. Flannans,
ennis.
our senior and cadet girls were also unfortunate not to
qualify for the regional play offs this year. both teams
qualified for the north/south Kerry crossover finals but
unfortunately both teams were defeated, which ended
their season. our cadet team were narrowly beaten by
gael cholaiste ciarrai on a score line of 24 points to 21
points. our seniors were defeated by tarbert
GIRLS
BASKETBALL
our first year girls, captained by Jane o’
unbeaten in the Kerry league. therefore
they qualified for the regional play offs in
athea. in the regional semi-final Kenmare
overcame coláiste Muire, ennis on a score
line of 27 pts to 15pts.
We met old rivals rathmore in the final. We
had previously beaten rathmore in the
early stages of the Kerry league but
unfortunately rathmore got the better of
us on the day by 6 points (23-17).
BOYS SCHOOL BASKETBALL
The School Basketball Season of 2010/2011 saw Pobalscoil Inbhear Scéine drawn against the
best teams in the County and Country as the boys are now in the top division of Basketball. The
season began with a return to the North of the Country where some of the present Leaving
Certificate students started their basketball careers in first year with a trip to the First year All-
Ireland ‘C’ Playoffs in Abbey Vocation School in Donegal Town. This time it was for the U-19 All-
Ireland ‘A’Cup first round and a return to the same school, however this time there was to be no
medals but a gallant effort by the U-19 panel to lose out by 14 pts to the home school. In their
league efforts the U-19s against showed their ability to rise to the challenge and rocked the
established ‘A’ schools in Kerry by pushing each team letting them know the newly promoted
school were no push over. While we did not qualify for the playoff stages and were not bottom
of the table, the best results came with a win over St. Brendan’s Killarney 42-16 and only a 10
pts loss to Castleisland Community College who were sporting two underage Irish International
and who went on to contest the All-Ireland ‘A’ League Final. Up next were the U-16 Boys who
started their campaign with a trip to Dublin to play Colaiste Eanna in the first round of the All-
Ireland Cup and this was a cracker of a game where they were unfortunate to lose by two baskets
with many chances gone a begging.
In their League campaign the Under 16s qualified for the county semi final beating the likes of
the CBS Green and beating last years All-Ireland ‘B’ league winners St. Pats of Castleisland only
to lose the semi final to Mercy Mount Hawk again by failing to put away the easy baskets. There
is no Cup competition for the second years so they had to be content with the league competition.
Here they made the county semi final, while showing flashes of outstanding potential in some
games to mediocre efforts for other games they could and should be able to bounce back from
this next year with a greater hunger to compete.
Both for the Under 16s and second years they did very well at this level; qualifying for their
county semi finals they should see this as a very positive result for their first year in the‘A’division.
The first year boys basketball team made it a first for the school as they made it to the county
final in the most dramatic of fashions. Having lost to Castleisland Community College in their pool
game by a basket and Mercy Mount Hawk also by a basket in their final pool games Pobalscoil
Inbhear Scéine were ranked 3rd and had to face Castleisland Community College again in the
County Semi final loss but it was in the last two minutes of the final quarter where Pobalscoil
pressed and stole the ball repeatedly to lead the game for the first time in the last minute and
to finish out the stronger winning by four points. On the same day Pobalscoil Inbhear Scéine
faced into the County ‘A’ final against Mercy Mounthawk and lost out by only four points to the
Tralee outfit.
As Regional runner-ups the first year boys have qualified for the All-Ireland playoffs / Finals
weekend in the University of Limerick on the 7th and 8th of May. This is a fantastic achievement
by them as this will be the first time for the school to compete at the highest echelon of the
sport as they will play against the best teams in the country, there is no higher division. In their
pool games they are facing Ard Scoil Rís Limerick and St. Pat’s Academy Co. Tyrone. Results not
known at time of printing.
DUBLIN 2011
Our ladies football panel travelled to Dublin for a
weekend on March 4th 2011 where they played
two challenge matches against Manor House
School, Raheny. The senior game was played at a
blistering pace from beginning to end. The initial
exchanges of the first half were relatively even,
however in the second half the Kenmare ladies
and in particular the LC2 girls were determined
to win their last school football game and with
this in mind Kenmare upped the pace and won
the game comfortably.
Our first year girls were also successful in their quest for glory against Manor House School. They overcame their challenger’s very comfortably. Afterwards both schools enjoyed
pizza before heading off to Jury’s Croke Park Hotel. Before we headed home on the Saturday we visited and enjoyed a very educational tour of the mighty Croke Park Stadium
and museum and of course we finished off our trip with a little shopping in Liffey valley shopping centre.
POBALSCOIL INBHEAR SCÉINE JUNIOR LADIES
FOOTBALL REACH MUNSTER FINAL
Our junior ladies opened their season on Tuesday 19th October with an away win against
Castleisland Community College on a score line of Kenmare 10:13, Castleisland 1:02. This was
a fantastic start to the season as 9 players of the starting 15 are first year students. Up next was
an away game against Rathmore, this was a more challenging match for the girls but Kenmare
dug deep and came away with their 2nd victory of the season.
Kenmare were now through to the Munster quarter final against St. Marys Midleton. This game
was played in the neutral venue of Macroom. From beginning to end Kenmare dominated
throughout the field and overall it would be a challenge to recall an area and time where
Kenmare weren’t in control. Thus this ensured the ladies came away with the deserved win from
this wonderful team performance. Final score Kenmare 5:15, Midleton 3:06.
Up next was the Munster semi final against Kilkee. Kilkee had the pleasure of travelling across
the Shannon onto Kerry soil as the game was played in a very impressive Lyracompane GAA
pitch. This was our toughest battle to date; the initial exchanges of the first half were relatively
even with both sides trading a couple of scores. At the half time break there was only a kick of
a ball between the two teams. Kenmare began the second half in a more confident fashion and
began to exert more sustained pressure on the Kilkee defence and it was from this pressure we
managed to pick off some fantastic team scores. Orla Randles was outstanding in the back line,
her bravery and calmness on the ball was exemplary. Our midfielders Claire O Sullivan and
Denise Burns covered every blade of grass on the pitch between them, both players won vital
possession around the midfield area and delivered flawless ball to their awaiting forwards. The
POBALSCOIL INBHEAR SCÉINE LADIES FOOTBALL 2010/2011
FIRST YEAR GIRLS FOOTBALL BLITZ
Our first year girls participated in the annual 1st year football blitz on May 4th 2011 in
Newtownshandrum, Co. Cork. Pobalscoil Inbhear Scéine entered two teams as it was a 7 a
side competition, namely Pobalscoil team 1 and Pobalscoil team 2….creative
names…don’t you think? It was a cold and wet day when we left Kenmare early Wednesday
morning and it was even colder and wetter when we arrived in Newtownshandrum. ‘Team
1’had hard luck on the day as they lost their two group games and midfielder Roisin Lehane
also picked up a groin injury in the 2nd game ruling her out of the blitz. Fortunately ‘team
1’ were not out and met Presentation Milltown in the next round but unfortunately Milltown
were too strong on the day and they came away with a victory. ‘Team 2’ got off to a great
start and won their two group games. They then met a strong Cahir team in the semi final
and unfortunately our girls were unable to overcome this team, ruling them out off the
competition. Overall it was a great day out, despite the weather as Kenmare played some
exhilarating football at times. Well done to all that participated. Breeda Slattery
forwards continued to work hard throughout the second half and as a result Chloe Hawker and
Claire O’ Sullivan slotted over score after score. Overall this game was a keenly contested affair
from beginning to end with Kenmare running out deserved winners after a strong team display.
Final Score Kenmare 3:08, Kilkee 2:07.
MUNSTER FINAL
After coming through a tough semi final Kenmare now faced an even tougher battle....a Munster
Final against St. Augustines, Waterford. This game was played on Saturday January 29th in the
Cork Institute of Technology grounds. Kenmare ladies were physical and mentally ready for this
game however we were without Caroline McCarthy and Annie Cooper who had sustained injuries
over the Christmas period. Kenmare travelled with mighty support; present students, past
students, teachers and parents were all in attendance … hats, flags and headbands were also
on show and the girls greatly appreciated all those who travelled to the game.
Overall this game was a crowd pleaser; the first half was a very close fought contest, with
excellent defending by both sides saw nothing between them at the interval. A change of referee
at half time due to injury saw the first substitution of the day. It was nip and tuck all the way
with excellent passages of quality attacks from both sides. It wasn’t until the final 10 minutes
when the eventual winners St. Augustine’s pulled away. Kenmare fought hard but unfortunately
as time ran out the Kenmare ladies were unable to battle their way back into contention resulting
in a 7pt victory for Waterford. Kenmare ladies did themselves, their teachers, the school and
their parents very proud. Reaching the Munster final was a fantastic achievement as 9 of the
starting 15 were first year players… this is a great sign for the future of Pobalscoil Inbhear
Scéine football. Well done to all involved. Ann Marie O'Sullivan LC1
Our Pobalscoil Inbhear Scéine ladies participated in both the Junior and Senior Kerry Post Primary ‘C’ Schools Football competition this season. Our senior ladies captained by Aisling
Harrington competed in the senior C Kerry Post Primary schools football competition. Our first game of the season was a home fixture against Pobalscoil Rathmore. This was a very tough
and physical game but our ladies overcame the battle and won on a score line of: Kenmare 4:09, Rathmore 1:07. Our second game of the season was an away fixture against Presentation
Tralee. This game was played in less than favourable conditions, the wind was very strong, the rain was torrential but the entire panel overcame these obstacles, focused on the game
and battled right to the end and as a result we came away with another victory. Up next was a home fixture against Castleisland Community College. Unfortunately this game did not
go ahead and Kenmare received a walk over. Kenmare were now through to the Munster Quarter Final against Hazelwood College, Dromcollogher. This was just our 3rd game of the
season and it was played at a serious pace from beginning to end. With only two games under our belt it was very hard to be match fit and a very strong Hazelwood college team were
victorious on the day, thus ending our senior season. Breeda Slattery
