13 Lucky For Some
At the time of writing it is 13 years
since I took on the role of leader of
St. Bernard’s College. Not one for
superstition, I would say that while the
13 years have been filled with many
challenges there is not once that I
have regretted taking on the opportunity
that the role presented. In fact I have
always considered myself most fortunate
to have the opportunity to become
involved in this great school.
The overwhelming sense I have is of the
many wonderful people who choose
to identify with and support our College. This loyalty has been
apparent both in the good and tough times and is something the
College community can be very proud of. Having worked in some
school settings where there is little contact between the school and
its alumnae, the presence and interest of so many old Collegians is
another great strength of this College. While initially it may have
been more apparent in the various sporting groups, it now includes
a strong Old Collegians group who sponsor many successful
reunions every year. Having these former students return to their old
school is great to see. The establishment of the Foundation in latter
years is a great testament to the generosity of former students who
have set up a fund to ensure that students from under privileged
families have the opportunity to be educated at the College. In a
similar vein the tremendous support by the SBC community of the
Br Beausang School in Kenya has ensured that a generation of young
Africans will have the opportunity to become educated and to bring
about change for the better in their country.
I look to finish at the College having appreciated the chance to
bring about changes that I hope and pray will see the educational
opportunities improve for all students. Just how successful this will
be can only take time, so let us allow history be the judge of this.
For my own part, I hope to move into a different way of supporting
education [and the broader business sphere], as a consultant. So if
you think I could be of service to you or your organisation please
feel free to contact me directly
[0409863632 or fitzfm@netspace.net.au].
Finally I want to thank you all for your welcome, support and
encouragement. Be assured that St Bernard’s is one of the great
Catholic schools and with the ongoing dynamism of its Board and
staff, will continue to do the great work that was established by
Edmund Rice over 200 years ago.
SAINT BERNARD’S COLLEGE VISION STATEMENT
“Achieve Excellence By Learning and Doing”
P B
Rincipal’s Final Message oard Retirement
Peter McMahon ’57, who has been on
the College Board for thirteen years
and Chairman for the past eleven, has
announced that he is retiring from that
position at the end of 2008. He has also
chaired the Building Committee during
that time. Amongst the many things
we are grateful for, is Peter’s extensive
input into all the building projects over
the past thirteen years. His experience as an architect and
supervisor was invaluable. Peter also brought considerable
wisdom and experience to his role as Chair. He encouraged
the free flow of views at the board level while also seeing that
decisions were made at the right time and in the best interest
of the College. His support of the Principal and senior staff
was greatly valued. SBC owes a huge debt to this life long
supporter of our College.
Welcome back
It was wonderful to welcome back Scott Ryan
’90 to the College recently. After leaving school
Scott completed a Bachelor of Arts Degree
with Honours at the University of Melbourne.
He was elected to the Senate for Victoria in
2007 with his term beginning on 1 July 2008.
In his first Speech on 16 September2008 he
stated: “I am proud to say that I am the product
of a Catholic education. As a direct result of
the policies of the Liberal Party spanning over
40 years, choice in education has been made available to thousands.
While various vested interests still harbour hopes of ending it, the
promotion of school choice is one of the proudest aspects of the
Liberal tradition. Contrary to its detractors, school choice is not about
playing fields or swimming pools; it is about supporting diversity for
all in our society, not just those with means. It is about supporting the
thousands of teachers and volunteers, like my own mother, who have
built and taught in these schools when conditions and salaries were
often better elsewhere”.
Scott’s mother is a teacher at St. Monica’s Moonee Ponds, where Scott
attended primary school.

Profile
On Sunday 27 July Fr. Gerard Dowling ’48
commemorated the Golden Jubilee of his
Ordination to the Priesthood at the Church of St.
Cecilia in the Parish of South Camberwell.
Gerard was born on August 30, 1932 and is the
brother of Brian (dec’d) and twin to Mary. After
attending St. Bernard’s from 1943 until 1948 he
was ordained in St. Patrick’s Cathedral on July 27,
1958. His first appointment was as an assistant
priest at St. Benedict’s Burwood from 1959 – 1961
followed by St. Mary Help of Christians Altona from 1961-1963. He
has been Priest / Counsellor at Centacare Catholic Family Services
since 1963. From 1993 – 2003 he was Dean of St. Patrick’s Cathedral
and since then has been Priest in residence at St. Cecilia’s, South
Camberwell. In addition Gerard has hosted “The Family Counsellor “
program on 3UZ since 1973 and was awarded the Order of Australia
Medal on Australia day 1985.
In a recent edition of Kairos Gerard reflected on his upbringing and
association with the Christian Brothers by saying:
“I am a ‘Brothers’ Boy’. Yes, the major part of my education, especially
at the secondary level, was in the hands of the Christian Brothers, and
I want to tell you about it. Fortunately, I was raised by parents who
genuinely appreciated those who taught me, and who went out of their
way to show their gratitude to those responsible, even after I had long
since left the classroom.
I’m sure that all the religious orders that have taught in our schools have
done commendable work but, in God’s providence, it was the spiritual
sons of Blessed Edmund Ignatius Rice into whose hands my education
was placed so long ago. After completing my primary education with
the Sisters of Charity at St Vincent de Paul’s School in North Essendon,
my parents enrolled me at St Bernard’s College in Essendon, staffed by
the Christian Brothers. They were very comfortable with that choice,
seeing that our dad had been enrolled at St Joseph’s, North Melbourne,
From the editor
It
is with great pleasure that we welcome Mr.
Tony Paatsch as the new Principal of St. Bernard’s
College. Mr. Paatsch has a long and distinguished
career with boy’s education and has made a
significant contribution to Edmund Rice education,
in his current role as Deputy Principal at St.
Joseph’s Geelong. We look forward to introducing
Mr Paatsch more fully to the College community
in the future.
Along with welcoming Tony it is with a deep
sadness but also a deep sense of gratitude that we farewell our
Principal of the past thirteen years Mr. Frank FitzGerald. He leaves the
College, after completing a remarkable term, in a very healthy state,
with not only magnificent facilities but also a wonderful spirit that has
been engendered by his outstanding leadership. Thanks Frank!
While there have been a number of items in the media about the
end of the school year for Year 12 students, we have nothing but the
highest praise for our class of 2008 as they have moved through the
transition from formal classes to exam preparation with dignity and a
wonderful sense of celebration. The final assembly was a great way for
the school community to thank and offer best wishes for this fine group
of young men. A highlight of the Final Assembly was the introduction
of nominees for the Sports and Arts Awards. Once again, we heard of
the exceptional contribution by a large number of students to these
important aspects of our school life. Congratulations go to all those
in 1904, the second year of its existence. That meant that he completed
his entire secondary years under the Christian Brothers.
The spirit of faith engendered there, and the camaraderie that I shared
with my fellow students under the tutelage of ‘the Brothers’, prepared
me in a marvellous way for the subsequent challenges of life. It is
not surprising, therefore, that my three nephews, Daniel ‘83, Michael
‘85 and Gregan ‘89, were all students at St Bernard’s, that my grandnephew,
Justin Nott ‘86, became vice-captain of the college in 2006.
I mention all these relatives of mine because of the extraordinary debt
that the Dowling family owes to the men who dedicated their lives to
perpetuate the plan of Blessed Edmund. He planned that those who
were exposed to the input of ‘the Brothers’ would be at home in the
Church, make good use of their time in the classroom and give of their
best in sporting endeavours as well.
Sadly, not one of the Brothers who taught me is still alive. However,
I have had the honour of officiating at the funeral of several of them
over the years. Somehow it was a way of my saying ‘thanks’ to the
band of men to whom I owe so much, and whose exemplary lives I
still try to follow.
I’ve had the privilege, too, of visiting Callum in Ireland, the birthplace
of their founder, and of leading pilgrim groups to Waterford, where
he began his marvellous ministry, and where his body is venerated to
this day.
May I say, in conclusion, that I am eternally grateful to the Lord and to
His Mother, Mary (so strongly venerated by ‘the Brothers’), that in his
divine providence I and my family members have been beneficiaries of
their Irish Christian Brothers, and the great work of Catholic education
that has enriched our journeys of life and faith in ways that can never
be adequately measured.”
Fr Gerard Dowling is pictured here at the 48th Annual Mass for
the Deceased of the College, which is celebrated each year on the
Saturday following the Melbourne Cup. Remarkably Gerard has
celebrated every Mass.
nominated and especially to the award winners: John Rayner [Sports]
and Sam Dariol and Tim Cronin [Joint winners of the Arts Award].
In the last weeks of the school year, we had a
superb insight into Arts at the College with the Art
and Media show and the Spring Concert. Student
contributions were of the highest order. It was
especially pleasing to see how much progress
there has been in the promotion of singing, with
outstanding performances by both the SHOUT and
SQUEAK vocal ensembles.
A reminder about the book to be published to coincide with
the upcoming 70th Anniversary of St. Bernard’s College in 2010.
Past
Student Priests
Fr. Joe Geran ’40 SSS was born in 1924
in Melbourne. He and his brother, John
‘45, who is married and living in the
UK, attended St. Bernard’s College. Joe
was the first College Dux in 1940. He
later completed teacher training and
was a schoolteacher in various schools
across Victoria. After some years as a
teacher, he joined the Congregation of
the Blessed Sacrament in Melbourne.
He was a member of the pioneering
mission community that came to
Bombay in India in 1964 as a memorial
of the Eucharistic Congress which was
held in Mumbai under the leadership
of late Cardinal Valerian Gracious. He
was one among the four priests who came from Australia namely Fr. Len
McKenna, Fr. Paul Raper (who died there) and Bro. Francis.
He spent ten years (1964 to 1974) at St. Francis Xavier’s Chapel, Middle
Colaba, and Mumbai, preaching and giving retreats to priests of the
various dioceses and to religious on Eucharistic spirituality. Then he went
back to Australia due to his health problems.
In mid-September he suffered a major heart attack and stroke, which
he came through surprisingly well, being still mobile and able to speak
and not being in any apparent pain. Unfortunately he suffered from
aneurisms in his legs, which required surgery sooner than desirable
after a heart attack. Sadly, though he had come through the operation
successfully, he subsequently suffered a fatal heart attack and died in
hospital in the early hours of Thursday 9 October at age 84, after 53
years of religious profession and 48 years of priesthood in the Blessed
Sacrament Congregation.
He had generously served in a variety of capacities: as Provincial Superior,
as local Superior, in diverse formation roles, and simply as a community
member. He was a member of the pioneering mission community that
went to Bombay in India in 1964; ten years later he ventured to Bunbury
(WA) in the same way. He also lived and worked in Bowral (NSW),
Chatswood (NSW), Box Hill (Vic), Perth (WA) and Melbourne (Vic).
Along the way he gave many retreats to religious communities.
manager of football operations. Paul played 105 games for Essendon,
including its losing grand final to Collingwood in 1990, and he will take
on the administrative role after 13 years of coaching in three states. Since
retiring as a player in 1992, he coached in Tasmania for four years where
he secured a premiership with Glenorchy, before winning the minor
premiership in the SANFL with Woodville-West Torrens. He then spent
four years at North Melbourne as an assistant to Denis Pagan and then
Dean Laidley, before being invited to join the Crows by coach Neil Craig,
where he has spent the last four years.
Pat Soldo ‘92 CPA is a Director of Babo Group Pty Ltd, who specialise in
all aspects of financial planning and loan funding.
Reg Burubu ’57, retired from the business he founded in July of this year.
BRD Industries, a family-run business, is currently celebrating over 40
years of successful operation. The team have also recently completed
their 2,000th major commercial project in Melbourne. Reg, a qualified
accountant, has taken his skilled background to create a professionally
run concreting company. “Our projects can be seen everywhere
throughout Melbourne and we love driving around seeing the buildings
we have helped construct,” says Reg. “At BRD we focus on quality and
speed of completion”. Reg and his company have also done work at St.
Bernard’s over many years.
After twenty-three years Robert Wade ’69 is
retiring from his position of manager of The
Hideaway Resort in Fiji. The Wade family and
partners have owned and operated the resort
since 1985 when Robert and his wife Annie
brought their two sons from Melbourne.
Fr. Joe will be remembered for his generosity, his good humour, his
story telling, his love of family, his unpretentious spirituality and his lifelong
faith. He was entrusted into God’s good hands at a vigil service
on Thursday evening 16 October and at the funeral Mass on Friday 17
October. May he rest in peace.
A well-loved Australian Redemptorist, Fr. Peter
O’Donnell, ‘46 C.Ss.R, died at the Epworth Eastern
Hospital in Box Hill on November 4, 2008. He was
78 years of age. After working for two years with
the YCW movement in Melbourne, after leaving St.
Bernard’s in 1946, Peter joined the Redemptorists and
was ordained a priest at Ballarat, in 1958.
Fr. Peter worked constantly on parish missions and
retreats throughout Australia. Many parishes and their
people will remember his kind ministry to them when he preached
missions in their district. In recent years he promoted the Novena to Our
Lady of Perpetual Help.
Fr. Peter was buried from Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, Deepdene.
A classmate, ordained the same year, Fr. Brian Quillinan, C.Ss.R.,
preached the homily at the Requiem Mass celebrated by the leader of the
Australian Redemptorists, Fr. Paul Bird, C.Ss.R.
His sister, Joan Clancy, brother-in-law Paul and his nephews, past students
Matthew ‘73 and Damien ‘77, survive Fr. Peter.
Essendon is maintaining a cautious approach with
Darcy Daniher ’07 as he recovers from a lingering
senior games this season, has been hampered by a
back problem since midway through the year.
Foundation
A wonderful night was held in the Sports Pavilion, on 5 August,
to support the College Foundation. The night was a fundraiser for
The Foundation, which continues to provide scholarships to boys
who would not otherwise be able to attend St. Bernard’s. The night,
which was billed as “Dinner with the Daniher’s” was compered
by SEN’s Tony Schibeci and featured Terry, Neale and Anthony
Daniher, who told some fascinating and entertaining accounts of
their life growing up in Ungarie, as AFL footballers, and their life
after football. The night was extremely successful in its aim to raise
funds and awareness of The Foundation. If you would like to know
more about The Foundation you can contact Michael Perrett, at the
College, on 9289 1106 or mperrett@sbc.vic.edu.au
Swimming coach Ryan Nolan ‘99, who has competed at three Olympic
is not available in Victoria.
Kevin Rizzoli ’71 lost his wife Karen in January,
when she died from a heart condition. Her tissue,
including skin and corneas, was donated to the
Donor Tissue Bank of Victoria. Kevin said Karen was
a strong advocate for organ donation. “She always
talked about wanting to be involved in donating and
that it was a good thing for people to do. That’s why
when she did die, we were quite clear about what
to do.”
Brendan Smith ’61 B.Comm (Melb), TSTC, FCPA, MAICD, AFAIM recently
stood for the Board of the Victorian Teachers Credit Union at their annual
artists, four painters and two photographers, who
shared common interests but whose work varied.
Greg primarily paints landscapes, “inspired by
bushwalking and my travels.”
After four years coaching the Old Collegians Football Club Simon
Madden ’75 has returned to where it all began and has been appointed
as ruck coach at the Essendon Football Club.
Stephen Nicolazzo ‘04 kept his work short and sweet for a recent theatre
competition. He directed a ten-minute production, Alex Broun’s The
Celine Dion Songbook for the Melbourne Short and Sweet competition.
Stephen has been directing for five years and hopes to continue producing
work by emerging Melbourne artists. “I like making Australian theatre
and there’s so much work that’s coming out that’s really exciting. I want
to be part of that revolution,” he said.
Past College 1st XV111 best & fairest winner Kevin
Egan ’60 retained his place on the Board of the
Essendon Football Club at their recent elections. Kevin
was a premiership player at the Bombers in 1965
and has since been a long serving Board member,
who has been honoured with life membership of the
club.
The Footy Almanac 2008 is a great read. There’s no footy politics – just
refreshing views from 89 writers who love the game. Past student Paul
Daffey ‘83 edited the book
Engineer is Queensland father of the year
A
past student and leading mining
engineer, Dr Kevin Rosengren ’53,
who has twelve highly successful
children, has been named the 2008
Queensland Father of the Year. After
attending the University of Melbourne
and ANU and receiving a PhD in
Mining Engineering Kevin went to
Queensland forty years ago as a rock mechanics engineer at Mount Isa,
where he established a successful mining engineering consultancy.
All his children have achieved outstanding academic results. Four are
lawyers, two mining engineers, two business people, one a doctor, one a
physiotherapist, one a student nurse and one a student engineer. Michael
and Andrew Rosengren followed in their father’s footsteps to become
engineers and are now senior executives of major companies. Both are
Rhodes scholars.
SBOCA
On behalf of the Association I would like to congratulate outgoing
principal Frank FitzGerald on his tenure at St Bernard’s College. Our
letter of congratulations also thanked him for his total support of the
Association and playing his part in its resurgence since he became
principal.
There is no doubt we would not be in such a strong financial and
membership position if we didn’t have the support of the College Board
and Frank’s personal involvement in our activities. Many thanks Frank
and Good Luck for the future.
Our Footy Tip competition again was well supported. Congratulations to
our winners. Equal 1st: John Clayton ‘70 and Mauro Pasinati ‘82.
The financial incentive is minor to the bragging rights and the side betting
that some year levels are taking this competition too!!
Reunions are always great nights. Welcoming past students back to the
college, the pavilion provides us with a great venue to renew friendships
and remember times gone by. Thanks to all our reunion organizers for
their efforts in making these nights such successful ones.
The Annual Dinner this year went back to having a guest speaker.
St. Bernard’s Hockey Club
How is success measured?, Is it through games won?, Numbers
participating?, Financial success?, Spectator numbers?, Friends and
enjoyment? Well for SBHC it is all of those, starting with participation,
friends and enjoyment.
SBHC is now a well established, vibrant sporting group providing the
opportunities for past students, students and other interested players
to enjoy a game and belong to a great group of friends. In particular
it provides an opportunity for “Bernard’s boys” to remain “Bernard’s
boys”.
2008 brought success on the field for SBHC with a premiership for the
Under 17 Team and five premierships out of the eight ACC teams. Thank
you to all coaches, team managers and umpires. Hockey is a team game
and each team includes dedicated efforts of coach, umpires, managers,
first aid and supporters. Participation is its own reward, particularly for
parents.
A small but dedicated committee has got a lot done over the last seven
years and any interested people are invited to join the committee.
The end of 2008 marks the end of the era of development of SBHC and
an era synonymous with Frank FitzGerald.
Council chairman, the Reverend Allan Male, said Kevin was a role model.
“Dr Rosengren attributes his childrens amazing academic success to a
close and cooperative home environment and no television,” Mr Male
said. “This large family is even more remarkable in that Kevin and wife
Noelene were foster carers to many young children, providing crisis care
for varying periods of time.”
“My advice to young fathers is, consistently show love and respect to the
mother of your children and this will guarantee a successful relationship
and happy life,” Dr Rosengren said. “It’s (being a successful dad) mainly
due to my beautiful wife and I’ve supported her throughout. I think we
have made a very successful team.”
Congratulations to Kevin on this and all his wonderful lifetime
achievements. Kevin is also the brother-in-law of Jim Corkill ’56.
Recently retired Essendon Coach Kevin Sheedy
was fantastic. He gave the crowd some great
entertainment as well as signing his latest book
and providing many autographs. He is pictured
here with Old Collegians committeeman Anthony
Lastrina ‘07.
The Golf Day finally got a great weather day, was well attended and again
a great success. Thank you to all those who were sponsors on the day.
Fr Gerard Dowling again hosted our Mass for deceased Old Boys, a
permanent fixture on our calendar, the Saturday after Melbourne Cup. A
special day to celebrate the lives of Old Boys with family and friends.
Finally, many thanks to all the committee for the effort this year and their
commitment to 2009, and as always to Michael Perrett for his continuing
help.
President
Frank started at St. Bernard’s in 1996 and while Hockey had been in the
school for some years, Frank introduced a vision and passion to make
it what it is today. Ably assisted by Bruce Wallace and teaching staff,
SBHC grew from 2002 with one Under 13 Team entered in the Victorian
Hockey Association Competition to eight teams in 2008, in addition to
ACC teams, Frank’s vision and hard work has propelled the club forward
to become a successful club with a bright Future. Frank was presented
with a plaque and life membership at the presentation night in October
and has earned the warm appreciation of all involved with SBHC.
In 2009 SBHC is fielding (in addition to ACC teams), two Under 13
teams, three Under 15, two Under 17 and three Senior Teams. Expanding
to three senior teams means that players are wanted. Past students and
friends are welcome, including novices, as training and coaching are
provided.
There is plenty of room for involvement and we look forward to further
success in 2009!
St Bernard’s Old Collegians Football Club Inc.
The 2008 football season finished on a disappointing note with both
the senior and reserves teams losing finals, despite finishing in the top
two ladder positions after the home and away rounds, and missing our
opportunity for promotion.
Fighting back from the disappointment of the last season, all the club
management, playing and coaching groups had worked together to
implement the results of last season’s extensive football review.
The expansion of the coaching staff and implementation of a stronger
training and fitness regime have been the foundation of our improvement,
and despite our poor end to the season, I believe much can be drawn
from the improvement of the senior playing group throughout the season,
and although we can not escape the reality of failure, we should view
this result as a means to an end, and a step in a now longer process.
We are encouraged by the continued development, once again, of our
younger players, and with more under 19’s playing senior football this
season, and another batch
poised to play next season,
our future is encouraging for
the future.
The premiership success of
the Club 18 (thirds) team and
successful rejuvenation of
the second Under 19 team
is proof that the club can
provide an opportunity to play
at all levels.
The football club would like to thank Simon Madden for his work and
efforts as senior coach in the last four seasons. Our new senior coaches,
St. Bernard’s Old Collegians’ Cricket Club has commenced its 41st season
and, after strong performances in the six completed games, our Senior
and Junior teams are well placed on the ladders prior to the Christmas
break. Club Coach, Rex Bennett, has been re-appointed and is quite
happy with the start but obviously believes that there is still considerable
room for further improvement.
The First Eleven under the captaincy of Craig Osborne has been promoted
to Senior A division after being runners up last season. The team has
started strongly and is currently in first position on the ladder without
losing a game. The Club’s overseas player from last season, Andrew
Parkin-Coates, has not returned this season and has been replaced by
Antonio Mullins, an experienced all rounder from South Africa, who
has played a high level of cricket in South Africa, England and Holland.
Antonio is a qualified Level 2 accredited Cricket Coach who has already
made a positive contribution to the club, not only through his on field
performance but also his cricket knowledge and experience.
The Second Eleven under the captaincy of Michael Thom have started
the season in a similar vain to last season and are currently on top of the
ladder. Whilst the Third (under Tim Raffle) and Fourth (under John Jordan)
Elevens have been hampered by the perennial problems of unavailability,
exams, weddings etc., they have both started positively being in fourth
and fifth positions respectively on the ladder.
Shane Keogh and Rocky Iannello, were an integral part of our coaching
panel this season and we are excited about their senior appointment.
The junior section of our club continues to grow with a record number
of registered players and with increasing parental support they finished
the season with one premiership and another three teams competing in
finals. Many “Old Boy” and past players’ families are now returning to
the club through our junior ranks, and enjoying a regeneration of their
football club involvement.
Administratively and socially the club has prospered, particularly with
the benefits of the new facilities and Pavilion encouraging families to be
involved at all levels.
We again thank our major sponsor, The North Suburban Sports Club, for
their outstanding continued support throughout the season. They continue
to be a strong supporter and ally of the club and its members as we share
several common goals and memberships ideals. The football club is also
most pleased to announce the partnership support of the Strathmore
Community Bank (Bendigo Bank Branch) and we look forward to a long
and fruitful relationship.
The club continues to grow its supporter base and extended network
and I encourage all of the broader St. Bernard’s community to follow our
progress through the football club website www.stbernardsfc.com.au.
We look forward to the challenges of next season at all levels with a
confident and positive approach to do the work required for success and
grow our club both on and off the field.
St. bernard’s old collegians’ cricket club
2008 marks the 10th anniversary of the St Bernard’s Old Collegians
Basketball Club. What started out as ten year seven and eight boys and
their teacher playing basketball in the local Saturday morning domestic
competition has now grown into a fully operating club that has over one
hundred boys from the college and their families and friends competing
every week in the Keilor Basketball Association Domestic Competition.
Over the years we have had a number of girls teams that have come and
Like the Seniors, the Junior teams have performed well at all levels with
the Under 14(2)’s and 16(1)’s on top of the ladder and Under 12(1)’s and
Under 14(1)’s in fourth and third positions respectively. The success of
the Club’s Junior Cricket program has been exemplified by the selection
of 16 year-old Liam Jilla in the First Eleven and a century in the 4th Eleven
by another current Under 16 player, Harry Overman.
To commemorate the 40th Year of St. Bernard’s Old Collegians’ Cricket
Club, the club is holding a “40 Year Celebration Dinner” on Saturday,
21st February 2009. The Club will be unveiling its new Honour Board
and presenting retrospective Beau Redmond Club Champion Medals to
past winners in our 40 year history. The club is currently updating its past
St Bernard’s Old Collegians Basketball Club
gone and in 2007 we set up an under ten team comprised mainly of little
sisters of some of our older boys who played off in the finals series in their
first year. This year we have added another team of girls who are also
doing well in the under twelve competition. We have registered fourteen
teams to play in the 2008/9 season at Keilor with young people playing
in teams from under 10 through to under 18. Teams train every Tuesday
and Wednesday evening in the college gymnasium.
It is very exciting to be at training and see so many enthusiastic young
people working hard at their skill development in basketball. It is a great
place for parents and youth to gather and be involved in the life of the
St Bernard’s community.
2008 also marks another step in the development of the club. Young men
who have played their junior basketball with St Bernard’s have stepped
up to take leadership roles in the administration of the club. It is with
great pleasure that I hand over the club to Andrew Feltham (President)
and Paul Menta (Vice President) two young men who have been involved
as players with the club for many years. I am sure that through their
Keilor St. Bernard’s Athletics Club
The cross-country season has been a mixed year so far, with injuries and
people overseas seeing us being relegated to Division 2. On the other
hand some of our individuals have done very well, with Peter Gaffney
winning the 50 plus individual age Championship, Michael McIntyre the
45 plus age group and Lisa Stanton-Smith the women’s Under 20 age
group. Stephanie Kondogonis finished 4th in the Under 18’s. In addition
Mark Blicavs was an Australian Representative in the World Schools
Cross Country Championships in Croatia. The men’s 40 Plus team and
the girls Under 20 both finished third for the year.
The Trials for the National All Schools and The Pacific Schools Games
produced a great result for Anthony Muscara when he won the javelin
event and in the process defeated Australia’s representative in the
Commonwealth Youth games in India. Anthony continued his form by
winning gold in December at the Pacific School games in Canberra in
18/19 years javelin. Also competing were Monique Cilione, Stephanie
Kondogonis, Chelsea Ross, Demi Teazis and Rachael Rowe.
Jesus
Christ Superstar
Year 12’s Samuel Dariol, who is College Vice-Captain of the Arts, reflects
on this year’s sell-out production `Jesus Christ Superstar’ in which he
played the part of Jesus of Nazareth. In conjunction with St. Columba’s.
“Jesus Christ Superstar is a show of great
passion, intensity and emotion, filled with
recognisable riffs and melodies. The unique
rock-opera style of the show sets it apart
from any other musical and is memorable to
most as an LP record before being staged on
Broadway in 1971. The great success of our
production is attributed to months of hard
work and the dedication of all involved. 180
students auditioned for the cast of forty-six,
which in itself is a sign of the strengthening
Arts tradition being fostered at both schools.
The performance made use of a ‘thrust’ stage created solely for the
production thus integrating the action and the audience in a way that
was more confronting than ever before. This show was truly unique and
breathtaking. Opening night came and the brilliance of the show not
only astounded the audience, but also the cast itself - the rave reviews
came flowing in! Now, when I look back on it all, it seems so surreal,
Echoes
From The Archives
The Archives were recently thrilled to receive a photo (pictured right)
from Marie Barrett, mother of past students Andrew ‘77, Chris ‘79 and
Phil ’82, of her brother Eric Holt receiving his RAAF Certificate . Eric
was a first day student of the College in 1940 and after achieving his
Leaving Certificate in 1941 he worked for a Government department at
Maribyrnong until his 18th birthday, when he immediately joined the
leadership and with the support of our great team of coaches St Bernard’s
Old Collegians Basketball Club will continue to flourish and be well
represented in the community.
Monique has won the National All Schools Title with a throw of 42.76
metres - her second title and second Australian record. Rachael Rowe
finished 4th in the long jump and 5th in the Triple Jump and Chelsea
5th in the discus. Stephanie Kondogonis was 7th in 3000m. When you
consider twenty-six nations are competing in these games, they are doing
exceptionally well.
On the home front, at the track and field competition, the 40 Plus men
are currently 2nd, Under 20 and Under 14 boys 3rd, Senior women 3rd
in Division 1 and Under 18’s and 14’s are on top of their respective
ladders, with the Under 16’s in 2nd place.
It was great that College Athletic coach, Gerard Brown, brought down
some members of the school team to the competition recently. We hope
they enjoyed the night and are encouraged to join the club.
as if it were too good to be true.
Jesus Christ Superstar was one of
the most outstanding musicals I
have ever been a part of.
I would like to thank the amazing
production team, in particular
the directors Suzie Bradmore,
Luke Steward, Brooke Baker
and their assistant, Adam Grima
who dedicated so much and lost
countless hours sleep. Also my fellow Year 12’s for making our last
school musical so memorable and astonishing. To Cheyne Moreira,
Jessica Marsh, Tim Cronin, Tim Vega, Lucy Bradley, James Etheridge,
Thomas Hunter, Zac Sheehan, Ben Vega, Peter Hughes, Ben Leahy,
Daniel Spiers and Darcy Mulcahy, I say thank you for the great memories
and your contribution to the Arts at our respective Colleges. Finally,
special thanks must go to Mr Frank FitzGerald for his support not only
for Jesus Christ Superstar this year, but also for his strong support of the
Arts at St Bernard’s throughout his thirteen years at the college. He has
built this area of the school up to what it is today and without him, Jesus
Christ Superstar would not have been possible.”
RAAF. He was doing his flying training at
Western Junction, Tasmania, when he and
another trainee clipped wings and Eric died
as a result of the accident on 27 January
Reunions
It has been another great year for Reunions and successful functions have been held for the graduating years of 1958, 1968, 1978, 1983, 1988,
1998 and 2007. In addition the 1947-1949 group had another great day at Moonee Valley.
The seventh annual reunion of the Forty-seven to Forty-niners Old Boys
group was held on 7th October, when seventeen members attended the
luncheon at the Moonee Valley Tabaret. Continuing enthusiasm for the
get-together is evidenced by the fact that we have maintained a core
group of about twenty regular attendees, of whom there are always a
few who happen to be overseas or otherwise unavailable on the day.
Attendance figures are even more remarkable when it is considered
that only twenty-one of our total group membership resides in the
metropolitan area, and we have had several attendees from interstate.
Next year will be a special celebration for our group, as it will mark the
60th anniversary of when we all left St. Bernard’s and went our separate
ways. Sadly, it was noted that three of our old classmates passed away
during the year, viz. David Dennett, Warren Prest and Kevin Seddon,
leaving thirty-six of our original group still surviving.
Development Office
Since its inauguration in 1990 the Development Office has grown
to the stage where a full-time assistant is necessary. This position
would suit a young person who has had close links with St. Bernard’s
and who has recently completed tertiary studies and is looking for
a career in marketing, public relations, event management, fund
raising.
