Beginning with John Hogshead, the old Scotch Irishman, who married a girl by the name of Nancy
Wallace in Ireland and emigrated to America in the early part of the 18th century and settled in the
sate of Pennsylvania and lived there until they raised their family. They had eight children, five sons
and three daughters. Their names were James, John, William, Mollie, David, Michael, Nancy and
Rebecca, all of whom were born in Pennsylvania. In the Spring of 1740, John Hogshead with his family
emigrated from Pennsylvania to Augusta County, Virginia (just two years after the County was
organized) and settled on the tract his son James entered for him on Elk Run [near Staunton]. He died
in 1756. We have no date of his wife's death, of their marriage, or the births of their children.

3. James 2 Hogshead (John 1 ) was born 1719, and died February 1782 in Augusta CO., VA. He
married Elizabeth Davis. She died Unknown.
Notes for James Hogshead:
James was born in Pennsylvania, moved to Virginia and was one of ten members of the Hogshead
family to serve in the Revolutionary War. He, and seven other Hogshead men, served in Captain James
Trimble's Company of Augusta Militia, Virginia State Troops.
James was the son of John and Nancy Wallace Hogshead of Scotland. James married Elizabeth Davis in
1743 in Augusta County, Virginia. They were the parents of three sons and a daughter, John, James Jr.,
William Alexander and Mary "Molly" Hogshead. All were born in Augusta County.
The oldest son, John, was born August 4, 1744. Like his father, John served in Captain Trimble's
Company of Augusta Militia.
The second son, James Jr., was born in March 1746 and served as an ensign in Captain George Moffett's
Company of Virginia Militia from August 18, 1778, to October 20, 1778. James' military records state
that, on the latter date, he "refused to serve."
The third son, William Alexander, was born in April 1748 and served in Captain John Dickey's
Company, Augusta Militia. William Alexander married Sarah Jane Robertson and became an ancient
grandfather of the compiler of this journal.
James Hogshead Sr. died in February 1782.

Three of his brothers, John, David and Michael, also served in the Virginia Militia during the
Revolutionary War. So did two cousins, Robert and Thomas Hoqshead.
Virginia State Troops played a big role in the Revolutionary War. Virginia militiamen made up more
than one third of the American contingent at the Siege of Yorktown.

Ocie L. Holcomb
ODESSA - Ocie L. Holcomb passed away Friday, Jan. 3, 2003, at Hospice
House
in Odessa after a long battle with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy.
Ocie was born in Whitewright, Texas, on Nov. 24, 1916. He moved to
Odessa in
1937, and married Ruth Shoopman on March 23, 1940. He went to work for
Phillips Petroleum Company in 1941. He went into the service during
World
War II and served three years in the Philippines and New Guinea in the
389th
Anti-Aircraft Division. Ocie returned to work for Phillips after the
war and
retired in 1980, after 40 years.
Ocie was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was an avid
fisherman, and he and Ruth enjoyed many years at their place on Lake
Buchanan.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Ruth; one son, Ronnie Holcomb

and
wife Patsy of Fort Worth; one daughter, Dianne Hughes of Odessa; two
granddaughters, Michele Wilson and husband John of Gilbert, Ariz., and
Tracie Hughes of Odessa; two great-grandsons, Matt and Sam Wilson, both
of
Gilbert, Ariz.; and daughter-in-law, Phyllis Holcomb of Fort Worth.
The family would especially like to express their love and appreciation
to
Hilda Guajardo who devotedly cared for our "Pepaw" with so much love
and
tenderness; also to Judy Saenz, Gracie Leal, Home Hospice and Hospice
House.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 6, 2002, at Sunset
Memorial Gardens, under the direction of Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
The family requests donations to Hospice House in lieu of flowers.
