the Revolutionary Army. He was a behind the scenes supporter of the Regulator Movement in North
Carolina The Fike family is probably of Welsh or German origin.Earliest Fike in America. Listed as a
Constable in Granville County, North Carolina in 1752. Also lived in Edgecombe County, North
Carolina, prior to moving to Granville. Names of children from tax records, militia records, and wills.
Supposedly migrated from Ireland.

In Jun 1734 John Thomas Fike leased a tract of land in Hanover Co. Va from Shirley Whately (Edward
P. Valentine Papers, Vol III)
2 Feb 1746 John T. Fike witnessed a signed petition in Louisa County requesting that a road be cleared
on the ridge between the south and north rivers to Todd's Pass.
1755 Granville County, NC Tax Lists list John Fike & Malaciah Fike, so Malachi was over 16 years of
age, indicating his father was at least in his 30s. All other Fikes listed in the area (John, James, Elijah,
and Nathan) are all recorded as living in the area and were all born between 1740 and 1760, indicating
they were probably children of John Thomas Fike..
John Fike claimed 200 acres on Bever Swamp and later 10 Dec 1755 entered a claim for 640 acres.
Malliciah Fike was a chain carrier when surveyed 20 May 1756 (Granville District of NC 1748-1763, vol
4, no. 2743 by Margaret M. Hoffman)
Bute Co, NC deed, dated 1 Nov 1764, states Ann Davis who is now the wife of Malikiah Fike sells 677
acres. In 1761 David Davis entered a claim for this land, but by 7 Ap 1761 he was deceased and plat
registered to Ann Davis.
Before the Louisa County Court, John Fike was tried and aquitted on a count of the murder of Lewis
Davis, the court deeming the entire event an accident. "Louisa County Virginia Court
Records"(FHLC #0032218 film). It states that John Fikes appeared in court being charged with killing
Lewis Davis.
He was married to Elizabeth Sarah MALACHI about 1737 in Hanover County, Virginia. In a book at
Salt Lake City, seen by A Underwood, there is an Irish Fike Family, three brothers who immigrated to
the US. This book includes the family of John Fike Sr. of Chatham Co, NC and lists 4 sons: Aaron,
James, John Jr. and Nathan
In the Book, And Then There Were Three Thousand, "Family legend tells that three came to the United
States from Ireland. Following a dispute over a horse, one brother settled in Illinois or Indiana and the
other two settled in Missouri. The dispute I'm told was over one brother trying to steal one of the othe
brother's horses. We descend from the horse thief, according to this legend {John}

Notes for Nathan Buford Fike:
Nathan Fike is listed as the father of Abel Fike in the History of St. Clair County, Illinois written in
1881. It appears that Abel was born in North Carolina 15 April 1777, and subsequently removed to
Pendleton District, South Carolina. Whether Nathan moved with him is uncertain, however, it does
appear that one Elizabeth Fike, who later married Phillip Land in St. Clair County in 1805 was born in
South Carolina. It being probable that she was at least 18 years of age at the time of this marriage, it is
quite probable that she was the daughter of Nathan Fike, and that Abel Fike was her brother. The only
other person by the name of Fike listed in the Pendleton District census of 1800 was Abel Fike, with no
other persons indicated in his household. The IGI of the LDS Church, however shows born 13 Dec
1808, both being from Abel Fike and Rachel Crownover in Pendleton District S.C. No other children of
Nathan are known at this time, nor is there any indication that Nathan was living at the time of the
1800 census. Likewise, the wife of Nathan is unknown.
The 1810 census of Logan County, KY. reflects as Elijah Fike 10001/10010/00;John Fike
20010/10111/00, and James Fike 20010/20101/00, and an Aaron Land 10010/20100/00. pp. 166 and
164
J. Forrest in July 1998 stated that Nathan and Susan were married in Tenn, moved to .Pendleton SC
then Hopkins Co.,KY then St Clair Co.,IL, 1836 to Looking Glass Prairie 2mi ne of Mascoutah, IL.

Notes for Abel Fike:
He was living about 1808 in Hopkins County, Kentucky. He was living in 1811/12 in Turkey Hill, 6 miles
E of Belleville, St. Clair County, Illinois. He was living in 1836 in Looking Glass Prairie, St. Clair
County, Illinois. He died on 10 Feb 1852 in Mascoutah, St. Clair County, Illinois. Abel Fike was one of
the early settlers in St. Clair Co., Illinois, having moved there from Pendleton District, S. C. in about
1811-12 by way of Hopkins County, Kentucky.
A Nathan Fike acted as second in a duel in 1819, and later signed a poll list and return of the first
election held in the county after Illinois became a State, but it is unsure whether this was Abel's father or
some other relative.
According to History of St. Clair Co, Abel sold the family farm on which he was living, about 1/2 mile

south of Rentchler's Station on the South Eastern RR in Dec. 1836, to a Mr. Raith, who had just arrived
with his family from Germany, and moved to Looking Glass Prairie about 2 miles northeast of
Mascoutah, where he died at the age of 75.

According to Angela Jones, and David James Watkins, the Abel Fike family settled on Turkey Hill but
later moved to what is now Mascoutah, in St. Clair County, Illinois.
Abel Fike held the office of Justice of the Peace and was for several terms a member of the board of
county commissioners. The oldest commission held by him, of which the family have any account is one
dated May 20, 1810, while Illinois was yet under territorial form of government and Nathaniel Pope was
governor of the territory.
Abel, his family, Rebecca, and Mary and her family and Abel's wife's brother's (Joseph Crownover)
family all went to Kentucky and shortly after moved to St. Clair Co. IL. They settled on Turkey Hill but
later moved to what is now Mascoutah. Abel is also reported to have had two brothers; George and
John, and another sister named Elizabeth who married Phillip Land in Pendleton and also moved to
Illinois about the same time. (Abel's father-in-law had also moved to Hopkins Co. Ky by 1808).

ODESSA - Ocie L. Holcomb passed away Friday, Jan. 3, 2003, at Hospice
House
in Odessa after a long battle with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy.
Ocie was born in Whitewright, Texas, on Nov. 24, 1916. He moved to
Odessa in
1937, and married Ruth Shoopman on March 23, 1940. He went to work for
Phillips Petroleum Company in 1941. He went into the service during
World
War II and served three years in the Philippines and New Guinea in the
389th
Anti-Aircraft Division. Ocie returned to work for Phillips after the
war and
retired in 1980, after 40 years.
Ocie was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was an avid
fisherman, and he and Ruth enjoyed many years at their place on Lake
Buchanan.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Ruth; one son, Ronnie Holcomb
and
wife Patsy of Fort Worth; one daughter, Dianne Hughes of Odessa; two

granddaughters, Michele Wilson and husband John of Gilbert, Ariz., and
Tracie Hughes of Odessa; two great-grandsons, Matt and Sam Wilson, both
of
Gilbert, Ariz.; and daughter-in-law, Phyllis Holcomb of Fort Worth.
The family would especially like to express their love and appreciation
to
Hilda Guajardo who devotedly cared for our "Pepaw" with so much love
and
tenderness; also to Judy Saenz, Gracie Leal, Home Hospice and Hospice
House.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 6, 2002, at Sunset
Memorial Gardens, under the direction of Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
