Installation Projects:
“ The Penumbra” :
December 2008,
Inspired on Junichirô Tanizaki’s book: “In Praise of Shadows”,
This project reflects a spiritual quest about my feminine Identity.
Through a light /shadow installation, I use a transparent acrylic sheet, hanging it
from the ceiling, to give the spectator a sensation of vulnerability .
The silhouette inside the acrylic plate was cut by hand and this empty interior is a
metaphor of a human feeling called “ inside emptiness” .
Behind it, 6 cut-off reflective vinyl stickers , representing the alter-egos or
the different personalities and masks that could fill the emptiness shown on the
silhouette
Materials/Description:
2 meter Acrylic Crystal ,silhouette cut-out hanged with stainless steel wire + special incandescent
light hidden from the upper edge of the acrylic, creates a virtual membrane on the empty silhouette
space.
On parallel sides of the gallery, two sets of fluorescent lights help create an atmosphere and
depending on the spectator angle, the stickers caused different refraction of the light.
Last Project (semester 10):
A Sculpture Installation Light-Painting piece
Description:
Detail
On december 2009, I presented this project for my fine arts school graduate exhibition.
My work consist in 3 sculpture piezes of 1m X 0.8m, the main material’s I used for this project
were : 0.4mm transparent acrylic sheets + RGB Leds + aluminum frame.
These various acrylic sheets were cut-off with abstract silhouettes in the midle to create a basrelief
by putting each plate on top of the other. Each sculpture piece contains approximately 13
acrylic sheets weighting around 30 kilos each.
Around the edge of these sheets are RGB Led lights wich are hidden inside the aluminum frame,
creating a variety of shades of diferent colours from the exterior to the interior center of the piece.
(The intensity and colour of the light changes with a remote control dimmer.)
This special effect makes the cut-off edges on the inside glow, this gives the perception of contemplating
drawings made out of light.
The Conceptual pieces talk about all “ the layers” that as human beings we all have
describing the physical , emotional, psychological and spiritual layers wich we all live with.
This reflection challenges the spectator ,to peel all their “masks” and discover what lays on the
core, to finally reveal -who or what- we really are inside.
19
The following pictures demonstrate the pieces in different states.
For example : different colour lighting representing moods.
Other Angles & Views
With a dimmer you can change the intensity of the light.
With this tryptich project I won the Silver medal of my class at my graduation
this past december of 2009, after 5 years of studying Fine Arts in Lima-Peru.
