Problem<br />
The Department of Public Works & Highways (DPWH)<br />
1 st Engineering District of Tarlac has approved the improvement<br />
and rehabilitation works of a certain stretch of<br />
the national highway due to rutting and dilapidated surfaces.<br />
In major thoroughfares, especially national roads and<br />
highways, rutting of HMA (hot-mix asphalt) roads often<br />
occurs. Rutting may possibly caused by subgrade deformation<br />
or bitumen mix/compaction problem. When left<br />
untreated, ruts filled with water can cause hydroplaning,<br />
which can be dangerous as it tends to pull the vehicle to<br />
the rut path while it steered across the ruts.<br />
Solution<br />
<strong>Maccaferri</strong> (<strong>Philippines</strong>), <strong>Inc</strong>. recommended the use of<br />
MacPave PET fabric to address the issue of surface<br />
rutting. Besides being economical, it acts to retard the<br />
propagation of reflective cracking in HMA pavements by<br />
establishing a flexible layer between the wearing surface<br />
and the base.<br />
MacPave produces a moisture barrier, which is possible<br />
when it is impregnated with tact coat, and it helps<br />
since less moisture content in the pavement prevents<br />
the weakening of the soil. MacPave further serves as<br />
a stress-absorbing membrane interlayer when placed in<br />
the middle of old and new layers of pavement.<br />
MacPave has been chosen due to its optimum thickness,<br />
high tact coat absorption capacity, and can withstand<br />
high bitumen temperature.<br />
