Graduates Enjoy Annual Partners in Excellence Breakfast Nearly 200 St. Joseph’s Academy graduates returned to campus on January 20 for the third annual Partners in Excellence Breakfast. The event, sponsored by the SJA Alumnae Association, serves each year as the kick-off for the Alumnae Annual Giving drive. Senior Elizabeth Karam, Student Council president, served as emcee for the event. Gracie Palombo, senior class president, offered a blessing and introduced Principal Linda Fryoux Harvison ’66, who updated the graduates on some of the many ways in which faith development, academic excellence and personal growth come alive at SJA. Guests enjoyed a video produced by multimedia instructor Sara Tomeny Rounds ’99. The video featured SJA community members’ reflections on this year’s charism theme: We Are All One: Gifted and Transformed by God’s Spirit. Tell us about your classmate Has a classmate recently won an award or been promoted? Is she making a difference in the lives of others by reaching out to “the dear neighbor” in the community? We want to know about it, and we need your help. SJA alumnae are accomplishing wonderful things in their personal and professional lives, but they are often shy about sharing their achievements with us. That’s where you come in. Please send us your classmate’s name, contact information and a brief description of her activities. We will contact her for more information. Thanks for helping us to share great news with the SJA community. 4 • Spring 2009 Pat Carville Hoffman ’73 reflected on what SJA has meant to her and to the community at large. Even in the face of bad news on the state and national fronts, the local community is a far better place because of SJA, Hoffman said. Sister Joan Laplace, CSJ, of the SJA Development Office said that proceeds from the Alumnae Annual Giving appeal go directly to the school’s operating budget and help keep tuition below the actual cost of educating each student. The Partners in Excellence Breakfast planning committee was chaired by Renee Thibodeaux Brian ’86 and Dorothy Aertker Ewen ’94. scholars...volunteers...friends Class of ’74 Gathers for Christmas Lunch Celebration Members of the class of 1974 gather several times a year for a meal, especially during Christmas. Enjoying this holiday season’s get-together were (bottom row) Ana Litvinoff, Lisa Bellecci-St. Romain, Lynn Bergeron Robertson, (top row) Joan Jerome Cockerham, Denise Clements Saccaro and Janelle Chenevert Gianelloni. Ever since getting together for their 50th class reunion in April of 2006, members of the SJA class of 1956 get together once a month for lunch. Redstickers Return to Campus for Athletic Team Reunions Alumnae members of four of SJA’s sports teams celebrated reunions during the past several months. Former members of the (clockwise from top left) basketball, swimming, volleyball and soccer teams gathered for informal visits and/or fun activities prior to current teams’ competitions. Former soccer team members participated in an alumnae game, and swimmers got together to celebrate coach Nan Murtagh’s 25th year in coaching. “We decided to host sports reunions because when you participate in athletics, you become part of a team family,” said Lauren Griffin, SJA’s alumnae coordinator. “Once you graduate, you can lose touch with one another. The reunions were a great way to allow the graduates to reconnect.” Spring 2009 • 5
