T 28 February. This was the year of<br />

major <strong>in</strong>vestments for <strong>Afrimat</strong>. We upgraded<br />

the crush<strong>in</strong>g plant at Denver <strong>in</strong><br />

Port Elizabeth, turn<strong>in</strong>g it <strong>in</strong>to a star<br />

performer; <strong>in</strong>stalled a new block mak<strong>in</strong>g<br />

plant <strong>in</strong> Ladysmith with excellent results;<br />

commissioned a new crush<strong>in</strong>g plant <strong>in</strong><br />

Pietermaritzburg; upgraded to a new<br />

VB1X mach<strong>in</strong>e at the Vryheid block<br />

plant; commissioned a complete new<br />

quarry with plant <strong>in</strong> Lephalale; and built<br />

a new crush<strong>in</strong>g operation <strong>in</strong> Witbank<br />

adjacent to where the newly planned<br />

Kusile power station is to be built. All of<br />

these <strong>in</strong>vestments were made carefully<br />

to re<strong>in</strong>force <strong>Afrimat</strong>’s position as a serious<br />

contender <strong>in</strong> the <strong>in</strong>frastructure space.<br />

Unfortunately the 2008/<strong>2009</strong> f<strong>in</strong>ancial<br />

year saw the world slid<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to the worst<br />

f<strong>in</strong>ancial crisis <strong>in</strong> 80 years. The full impact<br />

of this crisis is not known yet, but we can<br />

see that South Africa will not escape<br />

unharmed. Every aspect of the South<br />

African economy is feel<strong>in</strong>g the impact, and<br />

<strong>Afrimat</strong> was also affected. Our exist<strong>in</strong>g<br />

markets, specifically <strong>in</strong> the Western Cape,<br />

decl<strong>in</strong>ed sharply result<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a decl<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong><br />

profits from the previous year.<br />

The f<strong>in</strong>ancially responsible, but extremely<br />

difficult decision was taken to hold back on<br />

salary <strong>in</strong>creases of all staff and to request<br />

the unions to follow suit. Although no-one<br />

is happy about the need to wait, the vast<br />

majority of our 1 350 employees have<br />

<strong>in</strong>dicated that they understood. We will<br />

proceed with wage negotiations by June<br />

when <strong>in</strong>formation about the performance<br />

of <strong>Afrimat</strong> up to February <strong>2009</strong> is audited<br />

and <strong>pub</strong>lished. A better assessment of the<br />

f<strong>in</strong>ancial prospects of <strong>Afrimat</strong> will then<br />

exist.<br />

be concerned with waste and optimise<br />

<strong>in</strong>come out of our resources. We need to<br />

assess each expense (such as each trip<br />

and each phone call we make) and<br />

elim<strong>in</strong>ate those that does not add value.<br />

We must embrace a work ethic that adds<br />

value to the bus<strong>in</strong>ess. We must ensure<br />

that we do not allow ourselves or our<br />

colleagues not to pull their weight.<br />

elcome to Jenna Chetty who jo<strong>in</strong>ed us as the Assistant<br />

W Management Accountant at Lancaster Precast under Bennie<br />

Hancke.<br />

Jenna matriculated <strong>in</strong> 2002 at L<strong>in</strong>coln<br />

Heights Secondary School <strong>in</strong> Newcastle.<br />

She then obta<strong>in</strong>ed her certificate and<br />

diploma <strong>in</strong> account<strong>in</strong>g at Damel<strong>in</strong><br />

College.<br />

Afterwards Jenna was employed at Lee<br />

Oosthuizen & Smith <strong>in</strong> Newcastle where<br />

she completed her 4 year article tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

contract (Chartered Accountant Learnership).<br />

Dur<strong>in</strong>g that time she obta<strong>in</strong>ed her<br />

B.Compt. (Account<strong>in</strong>g) degree through<br />

UNISA.<br />

The programme will endure for a period of 5 years, whereby <strong>Afrimat</strong><br />

Readymix will act as their bus<strong>in</strong>ess manager to assist with f<strong>in</strong>ancial<br />

plann<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

This programme is <strong>in</strong> its third year of operation and due to the LOD’s<br />

dedication, hard work and loyalty, it has been a success.<br />

<strong>Afrimat</strong> Readymix will <strong>in</strong> future cont<strong>in</strong>ue with the LOD programme as a<br />

result of the success shown at present.

T Readymix (Cape) and Group Five Build<strong>in</strong>g<br />

lead to us be<strong>in</strong>g awarded the Brandvlei Prison<br />

Contract <strong>in</strong> December 2008. As a result we<br />

erected a mobile plant on site. We will operate<br />

the plant with our own experienced and trusted<br />

team. The Brandvlei plant commenced<br />

production of concrete on 16 February <strong>2009</strong>.<br />

Group Five moet b<strong>in</strong>ne 12 tot 18 maande 17<br />

nuwe geboue oprig, onder andere ‘n nuwe<br />

maksimum sekuriteitsgebou, nuwe kombuise<br />

en kantoorgeboue. Die kontrakteur het reeds ’n<br />

totale bestell<strong>in</strong>g vir + 11 000m 3 van ons<br />

produkte geplaas, wat 3 800m 3 gemengde bousement<br />

(dagha) <strong>in</strong>sluit.<br />

Die bestell<strong>in</strong>g mag nog vermeerder namate <strong>die</strong><br />

projek vorder en planne gewysig word.<br />

Director, <strong>Afrimat</strong><br />

Loyiso was born on 18 October 1963. He went to a primary<br />

school <strong>in</strong> Il<strong>in</strong>ge, a small village <strong>in</strong> Queenstown. He completed his<br />

matric (Grade 12) at Freemantle High <strong>in</strong> Lady Frey <strong>in</strong> Queenstown.<br />

He obta<strong>in</strong>ed his B.Sc. (Civil Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g) degree at University of<br />

Cape Town.<br />

Loyiso's first job was with Basil Read, a construction company.<br />

From there he moved to <strong>Bos</strong>ch & Associates (civil eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />

consultants). He then went <strong>in</strong>to property development with a<br />

company called Inframax. Loyiso has worked as a civil eng<strong>in</strong>eer<br />

<strong>in</strong> design and project management for more than twenty years.<br />

He specialized <strong>in</strong> design and contract adm<strong>in</strong>istration of township<br />

services, rural and urban roads and national roads. He has<br />

been <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> the conceptual and detailed design of bulk<br />

services for the Coega Industrial Development Zone <strong>in</strong> Port<br />

Elizabeth.<br />

Twelve years ago Loyiso founded Illiso Consult<strong>in</strong>g (Pty) Limited,<br />

one of South Africa’s largest black-owned consult<strong>in</strong>g eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />

companies, of which he is currently a director and the major<br />

shareholder.<br />

In 2001 Loyiso and some of his colleagues saw an opportunity<br />

<strong>in</strong> the market to transport petroleum products for Engen, and<br />

they started a wholly black owned company called Mega Oils. In<br />

2004 Mega Oils got <strong>in</strong>volved at Prima Quarries <strong>in</strong> the first<br />

quarry<strong>in</strong>g BEE deal <strong>in</strong> the Western Cape. With the formation of <strong>Afrimat</strong> this relationship was extended with Mega Oils be<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the primary BEE partner of <strong>Afrimat</strong>. Loyiso is a director on the board of <strong>Afrimat</strong>.<br />

Loyiso's message to the employees of <strong>Afrimat</strong> is that we have a great future at this company and <strong>in</strong> this country. <strong>Afrimat</strong> is<br />

strategically positioned to be able to respond to excellent opportunities <strong>in</strong> the develop<strong>in</strong>g South Africa.<br />

His most important lesson to each employee is to focus on what you are do<strong>in</strong>g, and to do it right the first time.<br />

Loyiso believes that it is important to be totally dedicated to what you do to be successful. To be able to cont<strong>in</strong>uously<br />

improve yourself, you have to improve your skills. Others can help you, but you are <strong>in</strong> control of your own dest<strong>in</strong>y. Choose<br />

wisely!<br />

CMP Grows<br />

Production capacity at Ulundi Precast has been <strong>in</strong>creased by 30%.<br />

The 28 year old block plant that faithfully produced bricks s<strong>in</strong>ce<br />

1981 has been replaced with a brand new VB1, commissioned <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>Mar</strong>ch.<br />

Ulundi has experienced a steep <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong> demand. The new<br />

plant will enable <strong>Afrimat</strong> to serve customers’ grow<strong>in</strong>g needs, and<br />

will establish capacity for further extension of our market share.<br />

80 deelnemers verwerf. Deon is ook lid van <strong>die</strong> span<br />

wat <strong>die</strong> WP premierliga <strong>in</strong> 2008 gewen het. In Maart<br />

<strong>2009</strong> is hy deel van <strong>die</strong> WP se A-Span wat <strong>in</strong> <strong>die</strong> top-5<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>die</strong> nasionale kampioenskappe ge-e<strong>in</strong>dig het.<br />

Deon dra ook by tot <strong>die</strong> leierskap van sy sport en is <strong>die</strong><br />

afgelope 7 jaar aan <strong>die</strong> bestuur van Boland varswater<br />

hengel.<br />

Dav<strong>in</strong> Giles (Divisional Manager - Sales for Aggregates<br />

South) had a long-stand<strong>in</strong>g dream to do certa<strong>in</strong> th<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

before he turned 40. This <strong>in</strong>cluded climb<strong>in</strong>g the highest<br />

mounta<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> Africa and complet<strong>in</strong>g the Argus cycle tour of<br />

110km.<br />

When he turned 39 <strong>in</strong> 2008, his wife Joanne (F<strong>in</strong>ancial<br />

Manager, <strong>Afrimat</strong> Readymix Cape) rem<strong>in</strong>ded him of his<br />

dream. In February this year Dav<strong>in</strong> climbed Kilimanjaro<br />

and reached the summit a mere two days before he<br />

turned 40. Last year he completed Die Burger cycle tour<br />

of 98 km, and this year he completed The Argus cycle<br />

tour of 110 km.<br />

All eyes are now on the Comrades…<br />

<strong>Afrimat</strong> is committed to be held accountable for good<br />

bus<strong>in</strong>ess practices, and not to allow wrongdo<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

It is a fundamental condition of every employment contract that an<br />

employee will faithfully serve his or her employer and not disclose<br />

should be <strong>in</strong> place to enable this to be done <strong>in</strong>dependently of<br />

l<strong>in</strong>e management. In relatively m<strong>in</strong>or <strong>in</strong>stances the l<strong>in</strong>e manager<br />

would still be the appropriate person to be told.<br />

To achieve this <strong>Afrimat</strong> has developed a Whistle Blow<strong>in</strong>g Policy. The<br />

policy can be viewed at your HR Manager. This policy is <strong>in</strong>tended to<br />

assist <strong>in</strong>dividuals who believe they have discovered malpractice or<br />

impropriety. It is not designed to question f<strong>in</strong>ancial or bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />

decisions taken by <strong>Afrimat</strong>, nor should it be used to reconsider any<br />

matters which have already been addressed under other procedures<br />

(e.g. the harassment, discipl<strong>in</strong>ary, grievance procedures).<br />

Employees, customers and suppliers are encouraged to provide<br />

<strong>in</strong>formation of any irregular activities such as fraud, theft, corruption<br />

or any other transgression of <strong>Afrimat</strong> policy/code of ethics.<br />

The Executive Management Committee (EXCO) of <strong>Afrimat</strong> has<br />

expressed their concern about some <strong>in</strong>cidents where our employees<br />

got <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> theft.<br />

Any excuse offered to justify this type of behaviour is <strong>in</strong>valid. The<br />

actions of a m<strong>in</strong>ority could have a devastat<strong>in</strong>g effect on their<br />

employer and colleagues.<br />

WHY IS THEFT A PROBLEM? There is a popular argument that<br />

South Africa has a culture of tolerance for crime which is fanned by<br />

the relative low rate of success <strong>in</strong> crim<strong>in</strong>al prosecution of the<br />

perpetrators of crime. Simply put – crim<strong>in</strong>als often get away with<br />

their crimes, mak<strong>in</strong>g it a lower risk activity than <strong>in</strong> countries that has<br />

a sound grip on crime.<br />

<strong>Afrimat</strong> is committed to stamp out every form of dishonesty, and call<br />

on those honest employees whose careers are be<strong>in</strong>g put at risk to<br />

come forward with <strong>in</strong>formation of any such activity.<br />

Employees are warned that <strong>Afrimat</strong> will defend its future by act<strong>in</strong>g<br />

firmly aga<strong>in</strong>st any person who makes themselves guilty of fraud or<br />

theft. Such perpetrators will be dealt with <strong>in</strong> each area where they<br />

were <strong>in</strong> breach: the law (crim<strong>in</strong>al prosecution) and their employment<br />

status (dismissal).
